I’ve said elsewhere before how Galaxy 2’s worlds feel emblematic of the different parts of life, and I actually think Throwback Galaxy’s implementation fits perfectly into this concept. Think about it for a second- World 6 feels like the game’s representation of life coming to an end, at least relative to the previous five worlds, and the player had just been through the traditional lategame lava stage and a whole Galaxy whose entire premise is a play on old ruins aging like clockwork. The game was subtly telling the player “you’re getting close to the end”, only to throw in this quite literal throwback seemingly out of nowhere? Whomp’s Fortress wasn’t even a lategame course in Mario 64; why is such a simple stage from an older game showing up this late into the adventure? But then, you slowly start to realize… that’s the entire point. Throwback Galaxy is essentially the game’s way of giving the player one last look back at simpler times amidst the fear and anxiety of this experience we call life coming to an end. I’m not sure if that’s what the developers were really going for, but it fits perfectly with the “steps towards the end” vibe I get from Battle Belt and the famously melancholy atmosphere of Slimy Spring. I don’t think this message would have worked nearly as well as it did if Throwback were placed haphazardly into World S alongside other similarly implemented callbacks to previous games. Throwback sets out to give the player one last push of motivation before the rest of the ending stretch, and it does this job absolutely perfectly.
That's a really interesting way to look at it! I never really thought about this game like that. But yeah it makes sense! It always amazes me how great Nintendo's games are in most aspects, especially for their age! That is the reason why I started making these videos in the first place, I always thought these levels, which had a lot of effort put into them, were underappreciated.
I may not have grown up with 64, but I respect those that did. Also, any idea on when the rest of World 6 may be released? I’m just excited for Slimy Spring.
I like how this level kind of implies Whomp's Fortress has _always_ been in space.
Or inside a cloudy realm
Ah yes, the throwback galaxy, i love this galaxy, the developers really did want to bring this back, i personally enjoyed this galaxy so much 💙

Hey, I've been taking a break from making these videos, because I've been quite busy. But now I am working on them again, so stay tuned!
