Still remember when i watched this Festival on MTV 30 years ago when internet didn't exist and now watch it again on youtube, OMG this is full nostalgia, a truly piece of music history, what a rock & roll era most precious i've ever lived, to me rock & roll will never die.
I was 16 in 1991. When pearl jam changed my life. But ive been a rock guy since i was little with aerosmith, gnr, metallica, faith no more, tesla, then grunge changed my life. So much good music
I was 17 in 1991. When Nirvana changed my life. Got my first Kiss cassette when I was 6, never looked back. Got hooked on grunge, bought all the records and then we started a band. Have played ever since LOL Where are you from Mike?
I love James, and his mostly monosyllabic answers to Rickys questions... you can tell he does not want to f****** be there! When Ricky said Def Leppard is next with Pour some sugar on me I thought he was going to die!!! 😂
Yes his attitude was different back then. He’s not really like that anymore. He was in tears when Elton John told him ‘Nothing Else Matters’ is one of the greatest songs ever.
I was there aged 17. No searches or I.D. needed to buy drinks......you could even take your own in those days. I saw a couple of thinks that opened my mind as a young guy that day!!!! 😂... I can't believe I didn't see that Ricky guy in the crowd as I was stood right near where he was unless I've just forgot.
What an awesome day it was, was 16 then went with 2 friends (hi Wayne & Mark) - we got drunk the night before and went hedge-diving, got drunk again when we got there, saw Black Crowes and Queensryche from near the front, then went to get beer and never got near the front again, bottle throwing in Motley Crue, if you watched the band rather than the air you'd get hit with up to 8 litres of piss/beer haha, next Metallica were awesome back then! Then no money left, sobered up, got cold during AcDc so joined started fires at the back, found my buds several hours later and my grandad waiting in his car for several hours for us \m/
I was there ..and I lost my metallic t shirt...bummer. Great shows though, and it was my second concert after a Megadeth show in Manchester a few months prior..Alice in Chains were the first band I ever saw live in support that day. I was 15. At donington I remember Quensryche came out and that keyboard went off like a sonic wave ..it just about blasted our faces off with the waves.😂
My favorite line from this whole thing was from James Hetfield, who said "we experimented with different instruments, like bass guitar." Love his sense of humor.
(21:46) As someone who has had social anxiety throughout my life, but had an artistic side, I sympathize with James so much. I have done drama (in middle school and high school) and public speaking , but entertaining conversations one-on-one or in parties made me giggle and want to run away as far as possible. I currently take anxiety medication for job purposes, but it definitely hinders my motivation and artistic inclination.
James Hetfield on recording the Black Album: "Yeah we experimented with different instruments...like the bass guitar." Lmao. 😂 In case anyone who didn't get it, that was a pun to ongoing joke about the "...And Justice For All" album having no bass in the recordings.
My first festival!!! I wish this brought back more memories but... except for the flying piss bottles that blocked out all sight of the hill when Metallica came onstage, the ACDC fireworks and then getting chased off site by a drunken psycho, the rest of it seems to be all a lot of a blurrrrr now, 31 years later. Such a great, great time for rock n roll music back then. Thanks for posting this 🤘😎
One of the biggest DISAPPOINTMENTS of a TV event in my entire life!!!! I worked night shit in a factory so my wife taped all the Monsters of Rock for me. And....it only contained crappy interviews, bits of live clips of the bands, and music videos. But no real live concert footage. What a POS. I mean when they were interviewing Vince Neil backstage you can hear METALLICA playing Sad But True in the background.....wtf?!!!!!
From 41:50, its strange to think that about 4 years later "metal" kinda went underground for a period. I personally hated that period, as I was too young in the early 90s to experience the fun and frolics in the late 80s and early 90s, so when I was ready it was horrible cos it felt like it was all crumbling away from me and it was like I was "too late". Of course, as time would later prove, I wasn't too late, it all came back but in a different and slightly more mature way, so I got my chances later.
This was my first gig. A long bus ride from Somerset, setting off at dawn. What a day. Motley Crue were dreadful (they clearly had annoyed the sound engineers). Everyone else was sensational.
My first festival and you're right about Motley Crue who didn't help themselves by coming out and announcing "Hello London". And having Vince Neil follow Geoff Tate is just cruel. 😂😂
22:00 Incognito ode to Jason. Always believed that James+Kirk+BadAss Bass Player= Metallica. (Egocentric Little Man Drummer From Denmark = expendable drummer)
That flag is obviously racist. It’s about the southern getting mad about not keeping their slaves because it was getting abolished. Confederates is not for america it was against America.
@@PrinceChaloner what that gotta do with anything tho?? That’s wtf the confederate is and everyone knows that. It doesn’t takes a rocket scientist to know that.
I would like it if q of my Favorite bands Metallica would respond were as I used to be able to play the Entireitty of Master Of Puppets and Ride The Lightning, and i think that I wanted to be a member of that band I have you alls First album No Life Til Leather, and i say that Without Metallica Tool AC DC anx other groups such as Van Halen with David Lee Roth, there would Not be a Mr.Hanson being Michael Richard Hanson that is What my initials spell.
Tears and nostalgia for a time that no longer exists.
Summer 1991 the last real metal season.....fuck grunge!!!!!!!
Agreed
Yes. MTV used to play music instead of cramming wokeness down peoples' throats
You said it right: no longer exist
You can say that again...
Lucky enough to be stationed in England at this time. One of the greatest festivals I have ever been to. Such a fun day.

Sober from drugs not booze... 😂😂😂
When Wayne Gretzky got traded from Edmonton to L.A.

Riki Rachtman representing wearing an LA Kings jersey.

Got my ticket and brochure still from Munich Germany's Monsters of Rock with this same line up
Great piece of History! Thank you MTV for this report!
1990 - 2000: The most fun and loving ten year period of modern human history...those who were part of it know that's true...
Me llevaré ala tumba hermosos recuerdos de la programación de mtv de esos tiempos!
I love @04:10 how Geoff Tate says, "NO" and never even tries to back step or apologize...love it!
He was honest. 😊
@@richevans609 Absolutely! Most people are tying to be so politically correct in everything they say, that blunt honesty is great.
I would have given anything to have been able to attend something like Monsters of Rock. Some freaking great bands!!!
I went to this tour in Germany. It was insanely cool.
Damn I was 18 and watched this live on MTV. Now I’m 50. I remember wondering why the Black Crowes were part of this and I still do.
😂😂😂😂 hell yeah 🍻🇺🇲🪓
Because it's monsters of ROCK??
@ You consider the Black Crows to be a MONSTER of rock?

I should have been at that show, were as i am an exceptionally Large Fan of all the Bands that were at that show.

my first Monsters of rock was 94. In 91, I was in Cyprus on a UN tour unfortunately
1.6 million people attended this concert (in moscow.)

Where we can download whole show with music?
Great days from a proper festival! Not the 'rock for the masses' that is Download! 😂
Why was Pantera not included in this?
Rikki really botched that chopper exit
Just like mtv now, no music. All talk & segments.
Was there. Happy times. MOR pisses all over Download.
How long after this show did Motley give Vince the boot?
About a year ...
Motley crew is wrongly spelled its Mötley crüe so yeah they could at least put Motley Crue
I want to see the full concert not the interview
Ben Jervis 😂😂😂😂
😂😂😂😂
Rocky Balboa vs Ivan Drago
i remember all the hype MTV promoted..and yet the sound was shit. everyone of these bands should have sued the sound engineers.
