Quick heads up! Furysong was also another favorite from this year, but since I reread the first two in the series in 2022, and the series is already a favorite of mine, it felt strange to include it here. I wanted to focus on things that felt truly new to me, but I started overthinking everything after the fact and felt the need to mention Furysong in this pinned comment (as though the book has feelings, and is hurt by not being included).
aNyWaY, what are your favorite fantasy books of 2022? :)
I love this amazing video and love your amazing channel prayers and thoughts for you and your husband and your amazing children 👶 please stay safe and enjoy your reading 📖 love your family friend and Aussie fan John ❤❤❤
I’m ending Furysong very soon and I’m holding out on finishing it because I don’t want it to end. Oh my goodness the feelings in this book have me gutted . Her writing is brilliant and so very unique. It evokes feelings that I haven’t had a book ignite in a veryyyyyy long time. Thanks for recommending the series or I’d never have found it!!
Your makeup looks superb btw!
I started reading Witch Hat Atelier and have absolutely fallen in love with it. Only on book 4 currently but I’ve been going through a hard time recently and this manga has brought me so much joy. It’s such amazing combination of a cute sweet story but also intriguing and a little dark. I didn’t expect to love it this much. Thanks so much for the recommendation! ❤
Your videos are always so soothing. I play them in the background while I work
Since you love Half A Soul, I think you'd also love Emily Wilde's Encyclopaedia of Faeries that just came out. I'm almost done with it and LOVING it! It's like Half A Soul and Spinning Silver had a baby. So so charming and clever.
I read Nettle & Bone because of your recommendation and enjoyed it so much! It also sent me off to read more books by T. Kingfisher. Thank you!
Fans of T. Kingfisher should give Richard Roberts a try - for example "A Rag Doll's Guide to here and there"
Thank you! I will look at his books.
My favorite fantasy books that I read in 2022 (limiting to one author and no re-reads) are, in chronological order of when I read them:
- The Paper Menagerie by Ken Liu (debatably fantasy but I wanted to include it)
- The Inheritance of Orquídea Divina by Zoraida Cordova
- The Girl Who Drank the Moon by Kelly Barnhill
- Daughter of the Forest by Juliet Marillier
- The Spear Cuts Through Water by Simon Jimenez
- Lapvona by Ottessa Moshfegh
- Maria, Maria by Marytza K. Rubio
- Lonely Castle in the Mirror by Mizuki Tsujimura
- The Stone Boatmen by Sarah Tolmie
- Cloven Hooves by Megan Lindholm (which feels like a cheat of my own criteria to include it here since it’s another pen name of Robin Hobb)
- Fool’s Assassin by Robin Hobb
I also read The Girl Who Drank the Moon in 2022 as well. It was one of my favorites of the year. I read The Inheritance of Orquídea Divina in 2021. It definitely deserves more love. I don't see a lot of people talking about it.
I read all day yesterday! The Mercedes Lackey trilogy you spoke of the other day. I absolutely loved it!! I’m finally grasping this genre. Thank you for your recommendations. 😊
What Mercedes lackey trilogy is this?
Favorite reads of this last year: The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue by VE Schwab. Such a 50/50 book for people, but I absolutely loved it. Also absolutely loved her Shades of Magic trilogy, and I cannot wait for her first Threads of Power novel this year. I also personally loved the Throne of Glass series, I read all eight books in a month, and I still think about it. One non-fantasy that I absolutely loved was The Secret History by Donna Tartt; I think it's dark academia(?). Technically finished that in the small hours of January first, but it still counts for best reads of 2022 for me. I read a lot this year - most of them I enjoyed - but only these few made it to "best of" for me. Though, after a few years of barely reading at all, I'm just happy to finally be reading again.
Haven’t read Engines of Empire yet but I’m excited to get to it this year. I have read other series by R. S. Ford that I absolutely loved. Great author, one of my Favorites…
I had a difficult year last year. Thanks to youtube and streaming, I am doing somewhat better. Have not read as much last year as i did other years because of medical issues. But I have more hope now and plan to get back into reading books. Thanks to you and petrik I have kept up with book news and reviews. Thanks so much and pray for me this year!
I loved Engines of Empire as well! So great, and the next book is pre-ordered...so excited! I will be reading the Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches soon (it was a Christmas present!) and looking forward to it. Nettle and Bone was also a hit with me! Half a Soul was good but not a hit with me.
SO EXCITED!!!! 💙💖💖💙💚💜💜💗💞💓❤️🖤🖤🖤💞💞💞💞💖💙💚💜💗💓💓❤️🖤💖💖💙💙💜💚🖤🖤💞💓💛💛💞💜💜❤️🤍📖📚📚📙📚📖📖📖📚📚📙📙📚📖📖📚📙📙📖📖📖📚
Adding Engines of Empire to my list. You had me at GOT meets…😂
My favorite fantasies included Words of Radiance and the Heroes. My favorite outside of fantasy was a Man Called Ove.
Last year was a bad reading year in terms of number of books read for me, but my favorite reqd was Empire of the Vampire by Jay Kristoff.
For me, it was definitely the Broken Earth trilogy, I can't stop thinking about these books!
It would be awesome if you made a video about the T Kingfisher books that you have read already!
I'm planning on getting to Half a soul this year as I have heard very good things about it. I still need to get to Engines of Empire before Engines of chaos comes out.
I'm pumped to read engines of Empire sequel but it's so long!!
These sound great! Added them to my list. In 2022, I loved the last book of Naomi novik's scholomance series, The Golden Enclaves. The invisible Library series by Genevieve Cogman, the Jasmine Throne by Tasha Suri and Cytonic by Brandon Sanderson
Favorite fantasy I've read this year includes The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms by N. K. Jemision, The Shadow of the Gods by John Gwynne, and Daughter of the Moon Goddess by Sue Lynn Tran. Also, I read Nettle and Bone per your recommendation and definitely enjoyed it, but maybe not as much as you did :) I'm now reading Paladin's Grace and it's so enjoyable! I might need to read Nettle and Bone again to make sure I catch all the clever dialogue, jokes and small details. What I should I read next from the author?
Paladins’s grace is part of the World of the White Rat, which includes the 2 clocktaur books and Swordheart (technically they are first). They’re not direct sequels but you learn about some events mentioned in the Paladin series
I am currently reading The Shadow of the Gods. This is my first time reading a fantasy book 🫣 I am on page 205, and I am struggling with the slowness of it. I feel like we are still learning about the characters and the setting… does it pick up? Do all of the stories come together?
I've read the other two trilogies of RS Ford's, Steelhaven and War of Archons. They're good but I think he's nailed it with Engines of Empire. Looking forward to Engines of Chaos. The author's from my part of the UK too, nice to see homegrown talent
If I may add something to your reading list: Magus of the Library by Mitsu Izumi. There are 6 volumes currently out in English, with the 7th set to come out in December. Please read it!
I read the liveship trilogy a few years ago and I still think of them all of the time. I loved them.
I’ve heard so many good things about T. Kingfisher. May have to read something by her this year.
I got back into fantasy this year after discovering your channel! I guess you encouraged me to get back into this genre. My favorite reads were Piranesi (is it considered fantasy?), Warbreaker and Legends and Lattes.
My reading wasn’t extensive last year but my favorites were: Piranesi, The shadow rising, Nettle and Bone, Raybearer and Redemptor.
half a soul sounds amazing, thank you fot the recs 😍
I just finished Nettle and Bone and it is without doubt my favourite read of 2023 [so far].
I started reading Fullmetal Alchemist because of your recommendation. I'm loving it so far! Thank you for introducing me to this amazing series.
I always love your vids and your hair is always on point
I also found myself loving standalones in 2022, though I want to make progress with series this year
I read vol 1 of Witch Hat after seeing it on one of Petrik's videos - included on Kindle Unlimited but the other 11 (or maybe 10?) aren't :( such beautiful artwork, will definitely be looking out for them in physical copies
My fave new reads of this year
were Way of kings + Perfect state by Brandon Sanderson!!!
THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU for all your great videos, but specifically for Witch Hat
The top 2 fantasy books I read for the first time in 2002 are a) Hunger of the Gods by John Gwynne; b) and Legacy of Ash by Matthew Ward (Book 1 of the Legacy Trilogy)
OMG! Love Ship of magic so beautiful and magical amazing cover! 💛💙📖📖📚📙📙💞💞💙💓💛🖤❤️❤️💚💚💗💗🤍🤍💛💛💛📙📚📖📖📚💞💞💙💛💓💜🤍💚💚🤍💗💗🤍💙💙💞💙💛💓💓💙🖤💙
You mentioned a second channel with an in depth discussion on Witch Hat Atelier, but I can’t find the link to that channel anywhere. Do you mind sharing it? I’d like to subscribe there as well :)
Yay, I'm so happy you enjoyed N & B, and Engines of empire is waiting for me on Kindle
I loved Nettle and Bone too!
My manga top 5 of 2022:
Golden Kamuy
Ajin
Akira
Skip and Loafer
Frieren
My favorite fantasy this year was Never Die by Rob Hayes. Thx for sharing!💚
I re read once a year at least. My all time favorite.
Best novella of 2022: "AeonHeart" for its unique blend of poetry, action, story telling, world building, and romance.
Hey Elliot, can you please share the link of your other channel where you had Witch hat atelier discussion?
I kept wondering is Half A Soul gonna be here and it was.
Adored Nettle & Bone!
Its like a Brian Lee Durfee top 10 list, and starting at number 16 lol.
Just yesterday I recommended Half a Soul to a friend, who is currently in a reading slump. It was also a favourite of mine, so I figured she might like it too. BUT the german edition is soooo ugly and looks very corny, so she got rightfully deterred, which is very unfortunate. ^^
Awesome!
Have amazing brilliant day Elliot good morning xoxo 😚 📖💚❤️💛💛💙💚💚💗💓💓🤍📙🖤💜💜📙🤍🤍💖💖💖📙📚📙🖤💜💜💓💗🤍📖📖💚❤️💛💛💛❤️💚📖💜💜💙❤️💙💙❤️💙💛💛❤️💚💚📖📖📚📚📚📚📚📚📖📖📖
