Classic WoW has a bit of a reputation for people trying a little too hard on easy content, never has this been more true for when the ranking and honor system released in phase 2 of Classic.
Today I talk through how this system worked and all the little details that players took advantage of during what was for me, without a doubt, the sweatiest 2 months of gaming Classic WoW has ever seen.

Phase 2 was absolutely insane. People would go to crazy lengths to hunt honor in the open world. The real problem was corpse camping levelling lowbies 48-59, especially in searing gorge where people couldn't play their characters at all, so many players especially alliance quit during this period because the game was completely unplayable for them. But there were also ganking posses who would roam the higher level zones killing anyone they rode past like some Wild West, you'd just be farming herbs and suddenly you're set apon by the biggest bullies in town.

    • @Dom-zy1qy
      @Dom-zy1qy Год назад +18

I quit classic whenever ganking gets too bad. I just end up having this realization that I'm sitting here being inconvenienced for no reason when I could be doing anything else. Then a while down the line I'll end up coming back and the cycle repeats itself.
I wouldn't even consider it pvp, most of the time it's just straight up greifing quests or other Bs. Everyone I know plays on PvP servers so I can't really go on PvE if I wanna play with them.

    @XXLepic Год назад +17

Oh boy this video doesn't even go in depths into how crazy the top 1 or 2 discord honor groups were! Let me tell you...
I was put into a group called "6 minute queue". A pretty exclusive high end selection of those in the upper couple brackets on Alliance side. To get in, you had to provide screenshots of your UI, addons, weak auras, gear, proof of engineering, talent build and honor ranking. If interested, they had a person personal invite you to group and inspect you. You had to prove you had all engineering recipes they deemed necessary, which included a gnomish to goblin releveling for all required tinkers and items.
We also didn't just queue if we had 20+ people. We would go only 28+ people, with a minimum requirement of having at least 3 mages, 4 rogues, 4 healers, and at bare minimum 10 warriors. The discord invitations were sent out proportional to these standards. We had predetermined strategies as to who would be in which tower, flag, commanders, etc. down to an exact science. Mages were tasked specifically to be "suicide kamikazes" to AOE snare or root any who would try to slow our pathing. Rogues would bullrush West/East tower, warriors were a massive unit split into killing all NPCs necesarry before waiting for Drek kill. Hunters and Warlocks were assigned tower defense, with Rogues as backup.
Typically these games lasted exactly 6 minutes long (hence the discord name). They were EXTREMELY low tolerance for failure. Didn't keep up with the whole premade riding to objective? Kicked. Lost a flag or tower without well advanced callout notice? Kicked. Been inactive for a couple days? Kicked.
We had dozens of times where horde would realize some of our names as proceed to attempt to 40man turtle defend at their base from start, but against 30 sappers going off at the same time and raid leaders that acted militant in nature, they had zero chance at defense.
This got even more degenerate when the Paladin trick to kite all generals surrounding Drek was found out. Now the requirement was for a Paladin to perfectly kite with a select group around the horde waterfall and base grounds while we killed Drek in as little as 4 MINUTES! Yes you heard that right. Imagine 40 people just bum rushing straight to Drek. Paladin keeps aggro and kites the adds, and we kill it. We would laugh and couldn't imagine horde waiting 1hr+ to lose before they could even cap their first bunker and get 0 hks.
I personally for this time period played 16-18 hours a day, 7 days a week. Yet I still saw many who played even MORE than me consistently. It was so insane to hear their stories. One man left his wife over her nagging about him playing 18hrs/day. Others told me they dropped out of their college semester to ensure rank 14. A few quitting their job or taking a leave of absence. The list goes on and on. Many of them would make references to Adderrall and other stimulant street drugs to keep them going, saying it was too hard to play without for 20/hrs a day. As mentioned, they would buy other accounts and be spam multiboxing the closest graveyard outside Ironforge with low level toons to increase the bracket size. As casual players stopped playing PvP, this demand grew more and more to absolute absurd levels with thousands of accounts and hundreds of lowbie toons farming at a time to attempt to maintain rank 14 bracket size.
The irony? I don't know a single one of these players that still plays the game today. Many of them streamed to very few or no viewership outside those outside the discord. None on.
I personally didn't even hit rank 14 I stopped at rank 13 as those who hit 14 before me in WSG premades left and I was unable to make a full new 10man premade dedicated team and had zero financial resource nor willpower left in my soul to make alts myself to try to keep the bracket sizing where it was. Around this time the server became medium population and we didn't even have enough players for even 1 person to get rank 14 bracket.
I don't regret my decision at all. I actually enjoyed most of my time in Alterac Valley and still look back on it all with good memories. Hanging out with the same 80-120 players you really had this absurd yet fun "110hr raids" a week with a bunch of degenerate friends. Take the good times you have chatting while raiding 3-6 hours a week, and multiply that to 110 hours a week. Truly the craziest shit I've ever done, but also the most fun I've ever had in WOW. Seeing 30 sappers kill 40 horde in a single second. Seeing 30 battle chickens spawned to help kill Drek.

Reminds me of my experience in phase 2, The axe that chopped the head off of every one of my friends levelling characters at the time
    Except me
I'm not sure why, but as a lone level 45 warrior I played (irregularly) through the entirety of phase 2. No gold, no flight paths, no boats and no more friends online, It was a disaster through and through, I was on the outnumbered faction and barely made it into the low 50s by the time it was over.
But it truly was a sight to behold, and I knew at the time that there will be nothing quite like it again, so I at least can look back on it with a strange sort of fondness years later.

Me too, I was in STV 40 something. All my friends dropped the game. I dropped couple weeks later because the server just died for non 60, I couldn’t level outside, and couldn’t form a party because everyone in that level bracket quit.
I only came back when naxx was announced. I was happy to do everything but naxx, but phase 2 was a disaster for most people.

Happened to me as well. I was with a level 60 friend who was helping to escort me into Searing Gorge for a quest to get a trinket. I needed something from a tree log there and he figured I might as well grab the flightpath, but I was too low level to survive the mobs there, being something like late level 30's.
He got beat up by a druid and a rogue and I was sure I was going to be next, but they just buggered off and left me alone. Happened two more times on the way to the flightpath, as well. They probably didn't want to bother with me because I wasn't worth any honor to them at that level. They could have spite killed me for no reason other than shits and giggles, but I guess they didn't care about that.

I was there in both original Vanilla and in Classic. Indeed, ranking was MEMORABLE. On Classic I was an Undead Priest named Sarang on Ashbringer EU, and I have too many memories to count. Prior to BG's being launched, the World PvP gankage was insane. Luckily I was level 60 already, and we were HUNGRY for each and every little point of honor. We camped Alliance flightpaths like our lives depended on it.
Once AV launched though, yep, Alliance was dominant with their instant queues and Discord. Still had amazing fun though running from our queueing zone in Alterac Mountains to EPL to kill low leveling Alliance while waiting for the queue to pop. I even met a Night Elf Hunter from another server in AV whose name was also Sarang! Needless to say, we spared each other and emoted til the sun started to rise. Some of the best memories for sure, even if Alliance was more efficient.
I personally CANNOT wait for a new FRESH Classic Server as I will be gunning for that R13 or even 14 as last time I quit at R10 because of the sweatiness, but this time I'm determined to scartch that item off my bucket list once and for all.

      @@pagecreator6545 So, very brief...
Zandalar Tribe was a RP-PvP server where the Alliance was in the majority. On all other servers the Horde was dominant and grieving so to compensate the Alliance quite literally bullied the Horde players on ZT. One Alliance hardcore guild in particular, Praxis, tried to bring all of the Alliance guilds together to bully Horde players. For example, on all raid nights BRM was a giant gank spot and us Hordes always had to corpserun our way inside.
The hardcore guild Praxis tried to go for speedruns on raid releases, including a record attempt for AQ40. So when phase 4 started the Horde retaliated by actively NOT handing in war effort materials. One of these was the peacebloom which became the symbol of the retaliation.
This is very brief, if you look up "peacebloom war" on RUclips you'll find a couple of videos explaining it in more detail. It was an epic live event that I'll never forget.

The horde smelled meat, and boy were they hungry. The next couple levels in the Hinterlands were **brutal**, as level 60 horde players kept roaming the area, killing any non 60 they could find. I chose that zone specifically because it was big and had the least amount of players. My only saving grace was I could stealth, and usually the enemy couldn't see me in stealth, so they would leave out of frustration.
When I hit level 52 ish and decided to try my hand at BRD, it was awful. I knew it would be chaos incarnate, and I waited until a group was willing to summon me because I was not running the death gauntlet (tank privilege, come at me). Even exiting the dungeon as a group to reset was risky, as there would just be mountains of people outside tearing each other apart.
I miss those days, but god damn it was annoying.

I had the same experience brother, it was one hell of a ride. I actually would fly to redridge and just peacefully stealth walk my ass all the way up to BRD, enjoying the scenery along the way. I'd still beat people who took a more direct path on mounts, lmao. And the memory of sheer bliss once we'd zone into BRD, knowing the bloodbath that awaited on the other side of that portal was something else.

This is a good video. Got to say this video gave me a lot of nostalgia. I ranked in Classic multiple times on my server Earthfury. Horde and later alliance. First of all, I LOVED the world PVP phase 2 on my 45% horde 55% ally server as a horde. That was awesome and I'll have memories of that forever as I still do with Vanilla before BGs. Beyond that, I loved ranking like I really loved it. It was all much more than the PVP, because of the complex social dynamics. The community you worked with and built of PVPers, the drama, working with sleep-deprived people who could get very emotional a lot of the time, learning these complicated math equations involving RP and bracket slots. You having a good social IQ and knowing how to work with and negotiate with others got you ahead. For that matter when things went rogue your ability to trick others got you ahead. Truthfully it added a whole other deep layer to the game that I've never seen ever again in this game or any other that I've played... and I binged the hell out of it. Covid restrictions helped... in the end, I had 3 rank 14s and 1 rank 13 (three of them did not require too crazy of a grind but did involve the other things I mentioned, I kept working my 40-hour job the whole time and I have a family too) and it was all because I had a lot of fun, not for the titles that now mean nothing or really even the gear. it was for being part of that crazy and very complex drama-filled social environment. The only part I didn't like about this all is what I call "the dark days of AV" referenced in the video before a lot of the 6-minute ally premade got broken. Things were better before with the world PVP and after with the premade teams in WSG and later AB. Anyway, I made some long-lasting friends over it who I still talk to. Most people if they read this probably think that I'm nuts but that's ok, I had my fun, and many memories.

I was a part of the initial honor grind. On my server we went off of an honor system (hehe), Everyone that wanted to grind for rank 14 we would invite to a group first and fill with other guildies/strong friends. It took me the better part of 3-6 months to get it because we all took turns getting R14 and never passed the selected person on honor while the others did just enough to fall in the top 3 until they reached R14 (there was sometimes an anomaly that tried to go awol but thankfully most could be talked down before doing dmg). To get R14 you had to be #1 or #2 to go up in rank. #3 did not go up that much but you had to put in the work 12-16 hours a day to keep your place in line. If you slacked you would get passed so others could go up in rank and you had to be rank 1 or 2 on the server for four weeks from R13 to R14 because we had so few alliance and our Q times in AV ran from 1-16hours. Phase 2 sounds like you had a lot more going against you so i must commend anyone that made it through that nightmare. My feelings after reaching R14 were much the same as you described in the video. Cheers for nostalgia and i still have pictures from back then :)

This was the first time that I played the old-school pvp honor system in Classic WoW and to be honest - I might get hated for this - but personally, I think it's the best. I miss old Alterac Valley; just fighting in an endless battle against the other faction. It was the best Immersion. I feel like getting a new rank every few weeks was the most progressive experience I had (getting Commander or Marshal felt incredible). So the moment when I got R14, it was honestly the best moment of classic IMO. To be fair, it was very tedious and a lot of grinding and is something I wouldn't do again in my life. I'm glad I can get to chill with wrath pvping now as I really enjoy just playing casually atm. Overall, I think Vanilla pvp is pretty decent despite it's very demanding grind and phase 2. Phase 2 was very awful on pvp servers.

The grind from 10 to 12 would have taken months at that pace.

Can't say I miss the "mandatory" event, making lvl 1s and run them to Razor Hill to help my guldies who were ranking.
Phase 2 was fun in the beginning, running around in groups fighting the other faction, but it mostly favored the bigger number of players, at least my server was pretty much 50/50 balanced.

The time when honor was released and bgs werent stands out to me as the pinnacle of what an MMO can be. I was lucky enough to be on a 60/40 server and we had some intense battles between horde and alliance. Truly spectacular.
My rank 14 grind was a nightmare though. I was a horde solo player for the most part. We definitely did queue AV then fly somewhere else. Eventually I stopped doing BGs because alliance was so heavy on premades the honor was just better to sit in menethil harbor in stealth and 1v1 anyone i could find. I was unlucky in a number of ways, accidentally getting a dishonorable kill in Maradon helping a friend, catching a 1 week ban for AFKing in AVs (you absolutely had to AFK inside a BG to maximize gains, when you needed to make food or take a quick shower or something IRL), and then accidentally crossing the honor cap and getting punished by the elites who controlled such matters. All in all I spent probably 2 or 3 months straight grinding for rank 14, and eventually had to give up at warlord as me and my gf at the time were getting sick of the all-day-every-day requirement....

I had no clue whats going on, i did not know about most addons or the WoW systems... i was just playing the game. So i ignored the people writing me and just continued. Eventually however school started again and i stopped the grind, that was when the whispers got less.
YEARS later i found out about the bracket system and the honor grind to rank 14.

Main thing I remember from BC was how many times alliance and horde did raids on the others bases to kill the leader. No flying in the old world.
The journey there was as fun as the battle into the others capital.

In my last two or three weeks most of sleep i got was in AV que, at that time it was a bit over 1h for horde so I would set alarm to wake me after 29 minutes than I just move my char (30 minutes was afk kick from game) and go sleep again for another 29 min, thats when I wake up and AV pop in few minutes.
We had breaker it was hell to rank up but I have to say it was one of the best experiences in my life, met some good people and now I really miss all of that fun we had.

I did this in vanilla, was actually in a pvp guild we just ran presets every day, our guild usually had 16 out of 20 of the top RP Earners every week, when a guildie hit rank 14 they stepped back and let others get into the top 20 spot, we pretty much controlled who got the highest ranks on our server, was a super fun time, all the top raiding guilds wanted to come pvp with us when they werent raiding, even though they werent pvp geared they used to come in some of the best raid gear available at the time, this was such a crazy grind but it was one of the most fun experiences i can remember, my shaman got rank 13, i gave up on rank 14 as i did not need the weps, as an ele shammy the AB epic staff was better then the HWL weps.

I was a level 53 Horde player on Herod when the honor system got released. Thankfully we had Gor'shak (I'm not proud that I used that exploit to level but it was better than not being able to play)

I did next to no pvp during Vanilla but during Classic I had to isolate for a few weeks due to Covid and decided to go for it. Managed to hit Rank 12 on my druid. Must be an absolute pain in the ass trying to get R14

Tarren Mill was really good in the first few weeks. On pve servers, it was better all round as you could raid, quest and travel easily. Pool boosting was bonkers too

Tarren Mill was THAT good even in the Beta.
they had just added Hunters; and they would run off with 2 dots on them and die
but I got Shackled a few times

Shazzrah EU had caps of 2.2-2.4 million honor a week (with battlegrounds, obviously). It was nuts.

7:10 Pshero was one of those who accidentally broke the bracket and he got like 1 extra month of ranking because people just sat the cap above him (premade vs solo go figure)

14:00 We did this to grind Bloodthirsty between wrath and mop over Ventrilo. We'd call queue pop and if a majority of us got a pop, we'd join. Isle of Conquest was so much fun in a full pre-made. Big shout out to Arthas-US from those days.

I made it to rank 14 just as AQ40 hit on Alliance and I was still having to play 10-12 hours a day but as a Paladin it was the only way to get gear for Ret (I was Holy during the grind). Our pre made played AB and we smashed most pre mades except for an Earthshaker pre made that ran 4-5 Elemental shamans - it was hell to try heal with the burst they had plus all of them using goblin sappers. Most pre mades would let whoever got 3 bases win to keep games fast so the initial fights at Blacksmith were super sweat.
