He is surprised to find the TARDIS exterior phone ringing, and answers it. On the other end is Clara, who is having some trouble with the internet. "Am I phoning a different time zone?"
"Yeah, you really sort of are."
That kind of humor in Doctor Who kills me.
+AksentNetharia I was just going to comment that line annoys me. She just accepts that she is phoning another time zone. Not one woman ever would just say 'am i phoning a different timezone?' and believe it
It's the next lines that make this exchange priceless.
"Will it show up on the bill?"
"Well, don't you think."
stevieb635 I thought that was 'Oh, I dread to think'
Phoenix no it means more so like the steryotype she'd be calling some support line in india not a whole different decade hehe
Ah right. So it was like crossed lines thing where she is thinking something different to him. I thought she had just accepted she is calling another year. Thanks for explaining. I did get 99% of it, I just missed that bit
His first conversation with Clara was on the TARDIS phone... just like his last.
oh yeah.....
Thanks a bunch for the feels...
I wanna see the next doctor played by benadict cummberbatch
Well the first time he knew he was talking to Clara was on the phone. Technically the first time was on the swings in the prequel to this episode.
***** Just started watching sherlock. Yeah it would be weird, but moffat did say he would be open to doing wholock.....
"Is it an evil spirit?"
"It's a woman"
The monk's reaction tho xD
Monk*
I literally couldn't stop laughing
Sometimes....you just can't make this stuff up...brilliant, right?
monkas
The 12th century monk was redpilled before it even became a thing. 🤣
I like how Clara was just gonna start talking to customer support with “I can’t find the internet”
she just wants to get to the point lol
pretty hilraious considering that she's like what? a 20-something year old living in the wifi age, if anything she shouldn't need to call a flipping helpline just to connect to the wifi, if she was like 60 or something then yeah I'd get it, but she's a young adult
@@ajddavid452 Not true.
I'm 23 and am VERY bad at technology. I can just about manage RUclips and standard streaming channels but don't ask to actually set up the wifi, use the advanced system on WORD DOCUMENT (I can only type words on that) or any other Microsoft program or navigate a games console.
Yes, we do exist.
@@juliall255 if you can login to RUclips then you can connect to a WiFi network so what's your point?
no seriously, connecting to a wifi network involves: opening the network list, clicking the wifi network and typing in a password
You would be amazed how many people do that on all sorts of helplines. In every single instance they have an account with you but can't be bothered telling you the info right off -- oh no, it's straight into the problem. Yeah, okay, but I need to know who you are first.
A 1500 year old Time Lord from the planet Gallifrey, the man who can make entire armies turn and run at the mention of his name, the oncoming storm, the Doctor of War: "You have clicked on the wifi button haven't ya?"
The way he just turns into a computer helpline rather than hanging up kills me 😂
Well, the woman in the shop said he could have helped her... 😛
The sign on the TARDIS does say “For use of Public Advice & Assistance Obtainable immediately” so that includes help desk calls !🤷♂️😂
yeah dr computer help line here🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Didnt the woman at the shop turn out to be Missy(the Master)?
@@michaellatta7699 yep
"it's 1207"
"I've got half past three. Am I phoning a different time zone?"
"Yeah you really sort of are"
"Will it show up on the bill?"
"I dread to think..."
honestly that was one of the best exchanges in the entire season. Jenna and Matt were such a great duo XD
It's interesting how Clara went from someone who doesn't know how to connect to the Internet to one of the most intelligent and capable companions the Doctor has ever had.
character development at its peak tbh
Character development? The knowledge was literally downloaded into her brain during this episode. That's not character development at all.
@@MaskedMass im obviously talking about more than just her ability to use google
I think it was stated in the episode itself that she was extremely clever but lacked computer skills

I love the little sprinkles of personality Matt Smith gave to Eleven. You CANNOT convince me that him looking back at the monk and gesturing to the phone like "can you BELIEVE this?!?" was in the script.
Agree! Matt made 11 so adorable! All those facial expressions and body movements. A truly inventive and plucky actor!!
"are you capable of talking without flapping your arms about?" - War Doctor to 11
I mean i agree, but it definitely was in the script lol
My grandad was 24 when Doctor Who first started broadcasting in 1963. He used to watch it with my dad when he was growing up in the 1970s-1980s. When this episode first broadcast in 2013, I was staying the night at my grandparents house, and we watched it on TV. By that point, he hadn't watched an episode of Doctor Who in years, and this episode was the first he'd seen of the revival series. He approved of Matt Smith's casting as a younger, quirky and funny version of the Doctor, as well as the self-aware humour that came with enjoying hearing "Doctor Who?" be asked out loud. It genuinely made him laugh.
My grandad is gone now, but I'll forever cherish the memory of watching this episode with him and my grandmother at their house, and exposing him to the new series and Matt Smith's doctor.

I like how he parked the TARDIS literally right in front of her house and was still wearing his monk robe… Typical Doctor, and yes, I'm sure any Doctor would do that :)
Gredran mainly 4th.
Hmm? Nonsense my dear boy.
why not park it in her room? there's room
David Linn that’s a bit too invasive
I doubt the 1st doctor would, He hates people.
Also see when he looks in the mirror "checking to see if i regenerated in my sleep again......"
@lex mota technically speaking 6th to 7h Doctor regenerated while unconcious so
more like checking out how good they look side by side ;)
That "okay" at the end - I love that delivery. All of "Okay, you're creepy; now please leave," packed into one word! :)
That is the point of acting. To portray something more than just what you say. It is a great example of how expression and delivery can matter more than the substance itself.
I like how he checks the mirror to make sure he hasn’t regenerated because Clara wouldn’t recognise him if he had
I like the idea that he could regenerate without noticing.
Probably just checking his hair or general look or smth. Since 11 at this point knew he couldn't regenerate anymore
@@xgekozx3305 that might just be a force of habit, tbh. He knows he's on his last regeneration, but just instinctively checks the mirror
@@EliasKaydaniuswell it’s unclear how much he’s buried the memory of the war doctor until name of the doctor, he could have thought he had another regeneration until he enters his time stream and encounters the war doctor and his old memories come back.
Also clearly, Clara wouldn’t recognize him even if he hadn’t regenerated since he’s never met a 21st century Clara before.
Which he should have remembered.
I actually kind of like Matt's hair like that.

Wait, if Clara got 11's number from "the woman in the shop", then that must be the same woman who gave her 12's location in "Deep Breath", which means that Missy was trying to bring the two together from much early on from when they first met. Sneaky little Missy.

chipmunk Does stuff Definitely, she becomes a writer when she's sent to the past and writes about the Doctor.
That's not how it works. You're thinking of Rory Pond

Jakeasaur I think what the commenter was doing was praising the doctor for saying it (because it rings true that a woman is worse than an evil spirit).
What I love about this is even though the doctor knew nothing about this Clara. He still tried to help her with the WiFi.
This shows moffat planned to have the master as a woman long before peter capaldi was chosen lol
+The 12th Doctor no...
Wow...
Didn’t the Doctor say during that conversation: “...Listen here Missy...” ?
When Master "died" in 3rd season they showed us that there was a womans hand taking Master's ring
So they planned made his next regeneration as a woman a really long time ago
@@min_mil that wasn't the master's hand through, it was the hand of a woman who resurrected the master using the ring. Simms came back as the master one more time before Missy showed up.

WHO DA MAN???
I JUST CRACKED AN EASTER EGG!!!
When Clara was uploaded (but the Doctor saved her), you realize that girl who uploads her was actually in a book. But look at that book closely. It was written by Amelia Williams. Amelia Pond married Rory Williams making her name Amelia Williams so she wrote the book!!
Oh that is brillent😁
+John Smith and their dialogue was:
Clara: What chapter are you on?
Artie: Ten
Clara: Eleven is the best. You'll cry your eyes out.
Celine Marie Barrozo eleven IS the best
i thought rory took her name instead? mrs and mr pond, rather than williams. Thats why river song's original name was melody pond, not melody williams
Matthew Shaw he never took her name the Doctor just often called him Mr Pond . He even called Rory’s dad that
3:07 i love how he looked in the mirror to see if he regenerated
the fact that clara can exist in multiple eras identically is just awesome
The best part is that they eventually tied it to a nexus event. They revealed that she basically split herself through the Doctor's timeline to save him. I thought it was an awesome foreshadowing
That episode is on my top 10, maybe top 5 list of best episodes. Clara and the 11th are a perfect match!
They go together as well as 10 and Rose
In my opinion I ship 11 and river
+Tactic “GameTake” Prozone agreed
Peixe Babel totally agree :)
Peixe Babel which episode is this
The Doctor enjoys hearing the title of his own TV show. If only we could tell him how much we also enjoy hearing and watching DOCTOR WHO!
I like the implication that even if it wasn't Clara but just someone random who stumbled upon his number he still would have sat there and try to sort their problem
Damn everytime there are these little parts of episodes, I'm so into it that when it suddently ends I'm like what? then I want to go watch it again
ikr
Clara was the doctor's only companion to see three versions of him. One of the many reasons she's called the impossible girl.
Sarah Jane Smith in the Five Doctors and a couple of episodes with David Tennant (ten).
@@luketobin3958Clara through the doctor's timeline managed to see her past. So we can conclude that she is the only companion to have seen all 13 doctors.
@@francescobono1848 interacted with 10,11, the War Doctor and then 12. That's four, plus the time stream where she saw 1-9. So yes all thirteen.
Google says Sarah Jane physically worked with 9.
She's also the only one to get a spin-off series & kept K9.
RIP Sarah you were the best.
"Bubbly personality masking bossy control freak." Yet adorable and amazing. She's one of my favorite Who companions.
I will say this again, Matt Smith is by far my favorite doctor. He is just such an underrated actor. The key to playing the doctor is to have range, by range I mean to be able to portray a wide variety of emotions, from sad, to angry, and from happy to sad. Imo he also has a better chemistry with Clara than 11 did, or rather a different kind of energy. With 11 it was more of a role model type of character but with Matt it they were a little more equal. Maybe the fact that actors were the same throws me off. I really enjoyed the flirty kind of relationship where they both push and pull
I like how he really shouldn't be wasting his time on tech issues but still decides to guide her through lol
To be fair, all he has is time :D
Sally Sparrow. Wouldn't she have made such a wonderful companion?
*sigh* Yes, she would have.
Sad that Carey Mulligan declined when offered. Oh well.
It's probably for the better that she didn't. She made it big not too long after; how many companions other than Amy can say the same? Doctor Who is where *so* much great talent goes to rot.
Blunk is so stupid.
Matt makes an adorable floppy hair monk. His hair was all natural and messy and his twitchiness and goofiness just adds to the charm.
Matt's hair as a monk looks so good
Oh, yes! You don't need to say it
...honestly, though, he was so sweet and grateful. And continues to be, in a less obvious but all the more touching way.
doctor who's biggest sweetheart it's true 🥺
1:45 Sorry, the cross most likely won't help you right now

Weird to think that Moffat had planned Missy/The Master from all the way back here. Imagine if Matt had Stayed on for one more series, I would've liked to see him go up against Missy.
If you mean the woman in the shop, that may not have been Missy. Maybe the woman meant to give her the actual phone number but left out or added a number.
WhitePointStar Productions We found out in the latest episode that the woman in the shop that gave Clara the number of the TARDIS was in fact The Mistress
I know but this comment thread thingy was from before Death in Heaven. So I didn't put it past Moffat to start a new story arc off of that.
Oh right. Sorry my bad.
...although he might just have thrown in a generic plot hook he could have used in any way, or not at all. Might not necessarily have planned it to be the Master specificly.
I like how Doctor smiles at the mirror the second time. Like, he suddenly remembers, 'Oh yeah don't I have a pretty face?'
“Am I phoning a different time zone?”
“Yeah, you really sort of are.”
Oh Doctor Who Humor, I love you.
she did the "thing". Most of the time, he'll say "I'm the Doctor" and they'll say "Doctor What" but no. Not our Clara Oswin Oswald she did the thing.
Eboni Jones if I was travelling with the doctor I’d be like doctor what doctor why doctor when doctor how and most importantly *Doctor who* 😂
I prefer when she said it in "The Snowmen".
As someone who used to work on a DSL helpline, I SO feel for the Doctor on the phone...
I like this version of Clara she's very cool and clever indeed
i'm glad u think so.
i feel the same way. i know a lot of people seem to prefer oswin and victorian clara but i've always liked the 'proper' clara a lot more.
"Is it an evil spirit?"
"It's a woman."
LMBO oh my gosh that is hilarious!
idk why Clara gets so much hate... I think she's great.... LOL that rhymes! no but seriously she's awesome
My two fav in the entire Doctor who series. I love Eleventh and Clara. They are the best duo

i love how he gives up and starts giving her instructions
The way he runs towards the ringing phone is absolutely adorable!!
"Is it an evil spirit?"
"No, it's a woman"
Does the sign of the cross, probably praying for the doctor.
TerrorFirma to a monk of the thirteenth century what he's witnessing would be indistinguishable from magic maybe he thinks the doctor is possessed and when he says it's a woman he probably thinks it's a witch putting a spell on him

the doctors hair looks much better like that, more crazy and suitable for his character
And now we know it was Missy who gave her the number. A bit predictable, but at least they explained it.
I didn't actually think it was her until Death in Heaven, lol
Kendra Curtis I sort of guessed it the moment Missy appeared in Deep Breath right after the doctor had just brought up the woman in the shop again.
I thought at first it was River Song but I was wrong
Either that's some really incredible foreshadowing or that raven/bird pendant is a lucky coincidence
What pendant?
She phoned him when they first met. And he phoned him when they finally said goodbye.
Oh Doctor, if only you knew where this road ended, it'd break your hearts.
"The woman in the shop" told Clara to call that number because it was the greatest helpline out there...

I have no problem with daleks, cybermen, time lords, weeping angels, tardis, Scottish werewolves, Italian vampires, Shakespearian witches, Dickensian ghosts, murder-mystery alien wasps and disappearing-mystery alien bees. Wasp and bees mysteries having no connection but still occurring in a single series.
But the idea a British 24 year old student studying to be an English teacher in 2013, wouldn’t know how to work a computer gives new meaning to the phrase “impossible girl”

Yup....
Clara's gone now, so watching her very first episode is an excellent idea.
I love how he is so flipped out by some girl calling medevil times for internet technical support that he just gives in "You clicked on the wifi haven't you?"
Before this, the only person who ever was able to call the TARDIS phone was the empty child, so it sorta makes sense why the doctor is so freaked out before picking up
Matt broke the 4th, 5th, and 6th walls with that "Doctor Who" recitation shtick. Very clever, Moffat!
anyone else absolutely love his hair? it’s so cute
i absolutley love how they possibly may have set up for Missy's (The Mistress) for a later big reveal in Capaldi's regeneration. If they planned it I am mind blown and amazed.
They had such a natural chemistry. I took Capaldi a season to develop that kind of chemistry
Yeah, Peter Capaldi's overrated as both the Doctor and an actor. Clara carried Season 8 for him because he couldn't do it himself, even though the writing was designed to make them equals. Matt Smith could have carried Season 8 with or without Clara and John Hurt wouldn't have been overshadowed but Peter Capaldi relied very heavily on her, both within the context of the story and when he was performing. Jenna Coleman's 28 years younger than him and she managed to make Capaldi look like a mediocre actor in comparison. There's a reason people call Season 8 Clara Who but it's not the reason everybody claims, which is that Season 8 focussed too much on Clara and not enough on the Doctor. It actually focussed on both of them and gave them approximately equal amounts of depth and development but became Clara Who because Jenna Coleman simply has more talent than Peter Capaldi does.
@@tomnorton4277One of the worst Who takes I’ve ever seen, and that’s saying a lot mate.
@@SteelSpurs I've seen replies similar to yours plenty of times. Peter Capaldi's got a rabid fanbase so talking to people like you is nothing new. I've been doing it for years and only 1 has given me a compelling argument. If you're going to argue, at least say something original.
Yeah, it's called an arc.
@@RoyalMudcrab If Peter Capaldi was playing the Valeyard's redemption arc, his sociopathic performance would have worked. But he wasn't. He ruined what should have been the Doctor's best arc since Series 1.
Christopher Ecclestone had the right sense of balance between a grumpy, distant alien and a funny, caring man. Peter Capaldi just came across as a human trying to pretend that he's an alien to excuse his shitty behaviour.
Plus, Peter Capaldi's "humour" sucked ass. Just imagine him saying "Nope. Bonehead. Bye then." There would have been no charm or charisma behind those words. Coming from Chris Ecclestone, the line was actually funny.

The 11th Doctor is SO vain! lol. "I never knew how much I enjoyed hearing that said out loud!"
The BEST Matt Smith scene is just after this when he saves the jetliner though!
Unanswered mysteries in this scene:
1: Who gave Clara the Doctor's number? (Until we get an answer I'm guessing Sally Sparrow from Blink, given she's a "woman in a shop" we know. Knowing Moffat, though, the real answer could either be infinitely better or infinitely more contrived and convoluted.)
2: How does the TARDIS' exterior phone even receive calls in the first place? As we saw back in The Empty Child, that phone is a fake and isn't even connected to anything. Maybe that changed when the TARDIS changed designs in 2010 or 2013, but maybe not only is Clara calling the TARDIS across time via a number from a mysterious shopkeeper but is also calling a phone that by all means should not work.
3: Why did the call reach the Doctor only at that point in time? Considering the call goes across centuries it could easily have reached the Doctor at any other point in his life. Why right then? I'm assuming we won't ever get a canonical answer for this one because the obvious answer is "because otherwise the Doctor wouldn't meet Clara," but I'd like to think there's a little more to it than simple writing convenience.
Anyway I'm really glad we get Clara for at least another series and I'm sort of glad Moffat's sticking around to clean up his own mess because there's still a ton of questions that need answering.
1.-I always thought that the woman who gave her the number was either Sarah Jane or River Song...
2.- Maybe the Doctor fixed it when he changed the 'desktop theme'?
3.-Maybe because he stopped moving across space and time and kind of 'settled' so the call eventually found him.
4.- I'm not over the feels of Christmas just yet TT-TT
Three. Maybe he changes his number everytime he regenerates so that way it wont create any Time-lime paradox.
1. Maybe its a another clara.
2. In Time of the doctor, handles the cyberman head indicates that he can rewire the phone to the exterior, or to the console.
Lets not forget, that the doctor can fix the chameleon circuit but chooses not too. Something as simple as a phone shouldnt be hard. Also the doctor has a qualification in JiggeryPockery, so phones are like legos to him.
1: There are multiple suspects with blonde hair that could have handed the number to Clara. His daughter Jenny, River, Kate Stewart, even at a push sally Sparrow, but goodness knows how she would get the number in the first place.
2: Ah, did you notice that it was an entirely diffrent phone in the box? The phone in The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances was an early stick phone, whereas this model was a much later one with a much more usefull extendable cord.
3: The TARDIS exists in all of space and time and routes calls to the where and when. Remember when River, who was in the Stormcage, got a call from Winston Churchill, even though he called the Doctor's number? The TARDIS routed the phone call to River. The TARDIS knew that the Doctor was looking for Clara and how important she would be in his life.
Well, that's what I think. : )
so maybe the TARDIS (as a lady) might have given the phone number to clara? or maybe all that wibbly wobbly timey wimey stuff there was some point in time that IT WAS MEANT that his number was given to her by an old friend or companion of the doctor by the TARDIS? just saying :p
he smiles at himself in the mirror.
WHO THE HELL IS THAT WOMAN IN THAT SHOP!!!!! TELL US ALREADY!!!!!
Missy
After watching the later episodes of series 7b, including the name of the doctor that resolves the Clara mystery, I come back here and laugh at the hysteria of how Doctor met Clara or how Clara became the impossible girl.
Makes me want to go back and watch that season again.
it's so nostalgic 💫
Looking back at this, how the hell did Clara go from a girl that couldn't even connect to the Wi-Fi to one of the most smartest companions in the show?
She got an upgrade during this episode.
She downloaded an Internet.
At the first attack, her mind merged with the internet. When she returned, so did the knowledge of the entire internet. Given that it's alien tech, this "Internet" might also involve alien's knowledge.
That line was written on the board towards the end of the Clara's last episode. It said "Run you clever boy" and the "and remember" bit was not there because the Doctor forgot her
And now they're both gone! IT'S SO SAD!!!
I still think it's quite funny how instead of figuring out what's going on, he is willing to provide tech support in 1207 lol.
I liked his hair in this :)
Love the scene from 2.49 onwards....superb!
Ah yes, Modern Clara, my favourite character from the hit video game Clara Generations, also featuring Classic Clara and Dreamcast Clara.
I revisit this after nearly eight years and each time she says the phrase it gets me
The person that set up that password knew exactly how long it would take the doctor to react... 1,2,3
That's the part that I really loved about Clara: she played hard to get!!
The Tardis routed the call.Seeing as how the tardis is sentient, and the fact it know about all of time and space, it obviously knew who Clara was, and routed the call to The Doctor.Despite the tardis not liking Clara.
They are really my favorite pair ever!!! No kidding.
Maybe Clara had it floating in her mind during the call and accidentally called The Doctor then forgot it later on
I always thought the woman she was talking about was River Song ... I don't know, it just seemed obvious to me ._.
But this Clara is the one who goes into the time winds, the original(at least based on what's been revealed), so she couldn't have it already in her mind
Sure, but ... who else could have had the number of the TARDIS ? All the others companions left the Doctor or died, River was the only one left so I just thought about her
Laura storia Makes sense… People were saying Rose and Mickey were in that scene in the prequel… I don't think that was an accident because they could have easily cast 2 completely different kids to run through… I don't think they didn't think something about how the kids looked because it could have easily been 2 white kids… Writers don't do things like that by accident. BUT, Clara has only been in for like, half a season, and the two specials were heavily focused on the Doctor and of course in the 50th, the three Doctors, so there hasn't been too much Clara backstory except for that she fell through the time winds… This "woman in the shop" could be a future echo of Clara because she was ripped into, "a million pieces," Maybe this echo was meant to set in motion the original Clara to meet 11 so she can in turn be his companion and eventually save him. When Clara was talking to Kate Stewart, she saw herself from, "a previous visit to UNIT," I vaguely remember them saying everyone who went through that archive had their memory erased, but I don't recall if hers was, but it could have been another echo or a future arc having to do with Clara… People forget that not much has been expanded on by Clara, it just seems like it's been ages since she's been on because of how long it is between episodes
Yeah, it could be another echo of Clara, but why would the scenarists make another paradox ? I know Moffat's all about paradoxes but still ... and, wouldn't have Clara recognize her own voice on the phone ? She's quite young though, like 25 years old, it's only a detail but she would have said "girl" and not "woman" ?
Anyway, with Moffat there are thousand things we don't understand
