I encountered a HUGE, male wolf in Banff, Canada back in '07. I couldn't believe how big it was. Must've been a good 70-80 kgs. It just stood there on the road and looked at me and my buddy, completely calm. Ears up, tail down. Absolutely no aggression. Just curiosity. We were on foot just 10 metres from it. We just stood there and looked at one another for a few seconds and then the wolf wandered off while it kept looking at us for a little while before it ran off and dissapeared. I'll never forget it. One of my most special memories of my life.
I had that happen but with a cougar but it didnt run away. It was probably a solid ten minutes or more it was staring me and i decided to get up and back away slowly to the back door because i didnt want to wait any longer to find out what would happen 😂
Once I confused lone wolf in the forest for a big furry dog and actually tried to pet it. Wolf decided that he dont want to be any close to this insane human.
I have had one encouter with a wolf when one of our sheep got loose. The sheep stayed at the edge of an open field and the wolf, knowing we were there, stayed in the woodline at maybe 15-20m from the sheep. Given that the wolf had ample time to jump out and get the sheep but didn't, I got between the two and hearded our loose sheep away and back to safety. On this day everyone came out ok. (Aside from the wolf not getting their meal) I was disappointed that I didn't get to see them, but I certainly heard them in the bush. They are quite beautiful creatures!

you need a pack of at least like more than 20 of them to start hunting humans... and that almost never happens... a wilderness guy talked about it on Joe Rogans...
We’ve spent years killing wolves. They learn not to fuck with humans. When an animal kills a human they are hunted for a reason. So even though we are unarmed, we still pose a threat
A wolf literally walked up to me and some members of my family when we were kids because we were all petting dogs _(we were used to being around big dogs and this was in the country)._ We legit just thought the wolf was a dog and started petting it. He seemed to like it a lot. Then when one of my aunt's came out she screamed and the wolf ran off.
When I was 19, working in the bush in northern British Columbia another worker and I stumbled upon a wolf den with five pups playing in the sunlight. No mother was in sight. As soon as the pups saw us they came running up and started to growl and crawl all over us, tearing at our clothing and nipping our fingers. We sat and played with them for about 30 minutes or so when I looked up and saw their mother sitting nearby, about ten feet, watching us. When the pups saw their mother they immediately ran over and started chewing on her. All she did was sniff each one and then just watched us. I am 77 now and remember that experience as though it were yesterday.
Once she realized you weren’t a threat (not a hunter/trapper) she was probably glad for the babysitting you did! 😂 I hope they all went on to have good lives.
@@erictalaveramartinez4160 I have no idea but suspect it was because she sensed that her pups were not being threatened or hurt so there would not be any need for attacking. As for mother bears being "death itself" I must disagree. A year after my wolf experience I was once again working in northern BC, in the Peace River area, as a camp cook for a timber cruising crew. One morning while getting ready to cook breakfast I heard a noise behind me and upon turning around I found myself face to face with three tiny brown bear cubs who were sitting about four feet away looking at me. Their mother was about fifteen feet behind them with her head inside our supply tent. One of the cubs made a noise and she backed out, swung around and we were eye to eye. I just quietly said hello and that I wasn't going to hurt her babies. By this time the cubs had moved behind and were checking out the prep table. Their mother made a rather strong grunting sound and moved around me and then moved the cubs to a nearby pine tree. She smacked each one once and up the tree they climbed. She sat at the bottom facing me and I returned to my work. They remained there for almost two hours watching while the crew ate breakfast and only left when the helicopter fired up. We were in that location for a month and sadly I never saw them again. I think it is a mistake to assume all wild animals are viscious and will attack.
I once had a friend leave his "dog" at my house because he couldn't take care of it. Weirdest dog I ever met but very smart. After a couple of months we took the "dog" to a vet who informed us it was not a dog but a Timberwolf. He now resides at a wildlife sanctuary in Texas.
Do you visit timberwolf occassionally? I can't imagine myself having a pet to be taken away from me after several months and not be allowed to visit it.
I lived in a house with a 3/4 wolf shepherd. (It killed all the cats.) One day I found myself next to it in a small room at the bottom of some stairs. Very close proximity, maybe a foot or two. It was threatened, showed me its massive fangs and growled. It was quite terrifying. I inched my way out the door as slowly as possible. I never went near it again.
"I had heard tales whispered amongst the pack, tales of bipedal creatures standing tall with confidence in their stride. They cannot sense which land is ours, or perhaps they do not care. Sometimes they travel in packs with a fellow canine to guide them, and sometimes they travel alone. We do not know if they are ignorant of pack territory or if they are here for a more malicious purpose, so we are advised by the Alpha to flee on sight if they are spotted. I pray to the moons that I do not encounter one any time soon..."
Meanwhile on Wolf RUclips: *What to expect if you encounter a human* "While working as summer lone wolf, I had an exciting encounter with a human. I was alone, surveying the area for mates, when I saw a human walking toward the forest. At first, I didn't know the human was there, but as I moved in the human's direction, I heard a quiet sound that alerted me. As soon as I did, I stopped in my tracks trying to figure out what made the noise. I turned and ran as soon as I realized it was a human, which shouted and waved its paws at me." "Running away should be your first reaction when encountering a human. There are a few other actions you might want to take during this encounter. In my case, I bark-howled because I felt nervous and threatened, hoping to deter the human or alert nearby wolves. In some cases, you may also follow the human at a distance until they are out of the area you feel protective of, like a den or feeding site. These bolder behaviors are obviously preferable if there's a dog present, since dogs are intruders in our territory." "Make fun of me in the comments all you want, but please understand why I felt threatened by this human. It's hard to imagine how I could be so close to a human without noticing it, but the breeze was blowing toward the human, carrying its scent away from me. The human was also standing with a tree in front of it and was wearing green and brown clothing, making it difficult for me to see or notice the human at first. But as soon as I did, I immediately implemented the safety protocol." "Anyway guys, that's my exciting encounter with a human. Hope you guys enjoyed. MrSlave00- To add on your comment: Humans are the king of endurance running in the animal kingdom. Our bipedalism lets us conserve energy. And rundown any quadrupedal to exhaustion.
Thank you for the informative video. There is too much "big bad wolf" syndrome these days. To see a video on how to respect them, rather than shoot at them is a relief.
If one is coming after me I'll use my gun. I always carry in the woods, why take chances? You can respect all you want, animals don't respect anything when they're hungry or feel threatened.
@@abode2662- Not really, black bears are smaller and tend to be more timid, brown bears are larger and will attack if you get too close or feel threathened, polar bears are the largest of all the bears; they are aggresive and they will eat you if they are hungry.
@@abode2662 It's real, or at least I've heard it before. Supposedly, black bears are cowards, but they will start eating you while you're still alive, so you should fight back and scare them off. A brown bear will leave you alone once it thinks you're dead, so you should lie down. A polar bear will kill you no matter what you do.
That wolf showed great judgement. Humans are an extremely dangerous and unpredictable apex predator and have a reputation for hunting and killing for amusement. That wolf was one of the lucky ones to live and tell it’s story.
@@shawnsouth327 not really they have a body signature for dangerous creatures, so yeah, wolf returning from scouting trip, with let's say, with a bristly hair and an cautious eye expression, may indicate said wolf encountered a dangerous theat, they're sentient, a non human sentience
I wouldnt call us Apex predators... even a monkey can beat a full grown man to death if enraged. Yes, with our intelligence GENERALLY as a species we can take on most animals, but without weapons even a lone wolf could easily take on most people. It's not us being dangerous that causes the wolf to back down, it's the possibility of loud boom sticks (Rifles) and our size
I mean, being killed by a human is way more common. BUT having close encounters with a human is also waay way more common than having a close encounter with a wolf. So I am not sure wild wolf's really are safer to humans than humans or if it's more the statistical likely hood of interacting with one of the two that makes it seem like wolfs are safer. Just as a reminder, wild wolfs are not domesticated dogs.
Several years ago while hunting caribou near the Arctic Circle, I had an Arctic wolf come within arms reach of me. It was a young female, approx. 6 months old. She saw me as I was sitting waiting to spot caribou. She came directly to me and began making play postures like a puppy or young dog. She had never seen a human and had no idea what I was. It was an amazing experience! No fear on her part or mine.
@@jackienguyen100 No, I actually tried to discourage it. The non-natives can't shoot wolves, but the natives can. I did not want her to think people were all going to be nice and have her get shot.
I lived in Alaska for 25 years and miss hearing and seeing wolves. On one occasion I was walking upstream on a river bank and watched one walk towards me headed down stream. He got to within 20-30 yards before he finally stopped and paced side to side as though he was waiting for me to get out of the way. I stood my ground and he eventually turned around and headed back upstream. One of several Alaskan experiences I will never forget. I hope to see them here in Oregon.
I did that to a black bear that had walked right up next to me in the woods. I had my knife out ready to start jabbing and yelling ‘GIT!’ Turned out to be a freeking dog that moaned just like a black bear.
Had a similar encounter, in Washington state I was walking down a logging road it was raining heavily, so for the most part I had my head down trying to keep dry and just walking out. When I looked up in the woods to my right there was a wolf loping towards me on a deer trail. He didn’t see me at first, neither of us looked up till we were only about 20 feet apart, I just froze but the wolf hardly broke stride he just changed direction a little and kept right on going. Almost as if he was thinking “great there’s another one of those human things better just go this way instead”. Clearly he was not afraid of me but meant me no harm. I thought it was kind of a cool encounter he was a beautiful animal.

can you imagine happily playing in the woods and you hear a silent noise, you look up and see a very elongated, white creature staring back at you. It must feel like seeing slenderman
Actually, WE ARE SLENDERMAN. Our species method of hunting is called Persistence hunting, basically, we would stalk an animal that usually had to stop to pant and cool off while we just kept running, since we can sweat and have no fur [hair] that's enough for us t cool off and we don't have to stop and rest. You're a dear in the Savannas when you see the harbingers of death the tall creatures your ancestors warned you about, you may outrun a lion, evade a hyena, fool a fox, but with these things... You can run but you can't hide from them, no matter how fast you go, how far you travel you will see them behind you each time you stop, they get closer and closer until finally, you can take it no more, you collapse panting, losing consciousness, to never open your eyes ever again.
@@Abdessamad_Ajdar Not sure what animals you think could be caught in that scenario with humans... Were we all marathoners back in the hunter-gatherer days?

A wolf literally walked up to me and some members of my family when we were kids because we were all petting dogs _(we were used to being around big dogs and this was in the country)._ We legit just thought the wolf was a dog and started petting it.
I am curious to know why the mother was so relatively relaxed at this encounter.
Mother bears are death itself when they see you with their cubs.
@@vnrkain1169 I've heard brown bears are more easygoing. Saw a video of a guy fishing when a bear came up and sat down beside him.

I lived in a house with a 3/4 wolf shepherd. (It killed all the cats.)

As soon as I did, I stopped in my tracks trying to figure out what made the noise. I turned and ran as soon as I realized it was a human, which shouted and waved its paws at me."
"Running away should be your first reaction when encountering a human. There are a few other actions you might want to take during this encounter. In my case, I bark-howled because I felt nervous and threatened, hoping to deter the human or alert nearby wolves. In some cases, you may also follow the human at a distance until they are out of the area you feel protective of, like a den or feeding site. These bolder behaviors are obviously preferable if there's a dog present, since dogs are intruders in our territory."
