Ecosystem Gameplay Review (Steam Early Access)

Ecosystem is a sandbox simulation game where you create an underwater environment and let evolution populate it with strange, beautiful, and even horrible creatures. The player is given controls to fully control the terrain, plant foliage, and seed animal life that will be driven mostly by evolution. For micromanagers there is a wildlife editor that allows the creation of specific fish and wildlife that you can name and categorize yourself. To date, there are no objectives (aside from a high score), and there is no guiding mechanics. You simply enter the world and mold it to your liking. For a game just entering early access it is fairly robust and free from any bugs (at least as far as I could tell). Filling out the game with more features and more things to do should be the primary objective of the designers. Perhaps even adding some targets to challenge players with. The aquatic life also needs a little fine tuning as many of the generated creatures from evolution would realistically have been DOA in the real world. Having a system that creates things that are more to the extremes of beautiful or horrifying would also be much more entertaining. Overall, I enjoyed this title and recommend it to anyone interested in playing in an aquatic sandbox for a few hours. The replayability is high here due to the evolution engine, but even that may wear out after a moderate amount of time due to the "sameiness" that a lot of the outcomes have.

While I havent played Subnautica, my understanding is that it is a survival game. This is more an ecosystem sandbox. They're set in similar underwater environments, but the mechanics are different. Again, to my understanding.
I really hope the game gets more updates in the future. It looks promising.
They're entering EA today, so I'd assume it will change and update quite a bit.
Also it should be noted that since distributing the early keys they've been high contact with content creators about patches, tricks, and info. They seem committed.
Hey man thanks for posting your youtube link in the steam store. Really helped me figure out if I want to buy this and I'm currently downloading it. I'm a huge aquarium buff, so this game will be really fun once its out of early access. I have really high hopes for this game and I hope it succeeds.
I'm optimistic. There's a lot of really cool tech in this game, but time will tell

@@stevenjohnson3060 It's very fun and they just released a patch for it a week or so ago. It's very very early access in terms of dev so a lot of your animals kind of mutate into blobs more or less. But still fun!
