So despite being a hardcore drug user (and dealer) in the world of the 1960s you could go straight to work at NASA... In today's world you can't work minimum wage retail without routine drug screenings...
First of all taking drugs is not a sign of a bad person at all, as long as he only does it to himself there's literally nothing remotely morally questionable about it, if you want to destroy your body be my guest (I know he did some more fucked up things connected to drugs, but "druggies" just aren't inherently immoral. Using date rape drugs on someone else for instance, that's inherently immoral, just consuming substances is not). Also lots of "legends" had some incredibly fucked up life. And boy do "legends" like drugs. But hell, even Gandhi was racist and people act like he was Jesus 2.0. Doesn't make them less of a legend, legends can be fucked up too, it's all about how memorable their actions were and what kind of legacy they leave behind and McAffee had an interesting life that you could say is legendary while still acknowledging he was a terrible person. He is a radical intellectual who was killed for speaking out about freedom. His faults are many and out there for all to see, but I see him as a tragic martyr of a corrupt and power hungry age.

The man was cooky and should've stayed away from the drugs, but the above things I'm finding it hard to be outraged by. The info given is that no decent person had anything to fear from the man.
