If it is in a different solar system/galaxy, then it would be like Steven Universe where Homeworld is just a far part of the universe. In Shera, it is different. In S01E12, Light Hope explains: "Mara stranded us in the empty dimension of Despondos" So it is a different dimension, not necessarily a multiverse situation but it is technically like a separate pocket universe where onky Etheria exists, thus no stars.
Emily isn't a scientist, so she isn't a lab partner. She is a friend, arguably an assistant.
