To me this is the most emotional movie of my childhood. It was the first and the only movie my father took me too see in the cinema, I was ten at that time and it immediately became my favourite animated movie. I watch this movie every Christmas. My father passed away this summer. When I rewatched the movie this Christmas, I cried. It's become more difficult to me to watch all the firstborn sons' lives being taken away and I wept a lot. "The story is forever."

You mention that you were surprised that they accepted him, but they said it right there when they said the gods sent him to them. The Egyptians were very devoted to their gods, and took his arrival as an omen. I also place this movie in the top 5 best ever animated films. I'd add Iron Giant, and Heavy Metal to the list.

This movie is so amazing, and I grew up with this film. There is actually a stage adaption of this film that played in the West End that you can watch live right now on Broadway HD. And when the Covid struck two years ago, fans got the chance to submit a video of them singing when you believe to make a special lock in video. I was one of the blessed people who got to be in the video. The video as well as the musical soundtrack can be found on RUclips. If Jen enjoyed The Prince of Egypt, I highly recommend her check out it’s pretty cool Joseph: King of Dreams. It’s just as amazing and have awesome songs as well.

Prince of Egypt got a musical play some years ago. I attended the European premiere of it in Denmark and was blown away by how much a theatrical stage amps up the musical numbers. And to top of the ending, as Moses splits the red sea, the actor playing him literally split the theatre down the middle, by clever use of hydraulics xD It was a fantastic experience I would love to have again.

I think the funniest piece of trivia of this movie was that animators who worked on it at Dreamworks who failed to meet deadlines or didn't complete their assigned scenes would be "punished" by having to go work on the other production they were handling at the time:
the "silly funky OGRE movie" 😏
(also, the parting of the Red Seas took 2 YEARS to fully animate)

This movie was my mom's favorite telling of Exodus. It showed Rameses and Moses having an actual brother relationship and it involved Zipporah in a more active role in the task Moses had in liberating the Israelites. As mentioned by others, there is a stage musical of this movie now. One of the places it premiered in the United States was Tuachan, an outdoor theater not far from St. George, Utah. The backdrop of the theater is the natural stone the theater is built into. The voice of Moses was Val Kilmer, Iceman from Top Gun and Doc Holliday from Tombstone. Sadly, he doesn't do much talking anymore due to throat cancer.
The singing voice of Jethro is Brian Stokes Mitchell. A huge Broadway star who is considered Broadway's last leading man.

  • @nellucthegreat

If I'm not mistaken it is Val Kilmer as the main voice and then they had the entire cast say the lines as well. So God's voice is the voice all the people. And I think that's such a masterful and tasteful way of doing it.

Moses has three time lines all segmented in 40 yrs. 40 years old when he grew up in Egypt and fled after he murdered the Egyptian. 40 yrs in Midian received God's revelation on Mt. Sinai. 40 years of wandering in the wilderness. He died at age 120.

I have a religious background but I'm no longer a very religious person and I always enjoy the heck out of this movie. I also listen to the soundtrack to this day because it's a masterpiece. I know atheists that absolutely love this movie because you don't need to believe to appreciate the storytelling, the work and the heart that was put into this movie. The fact that they focused so much on the relationship between Ramses and Moses just make the story even more compelling than it already was. That being said, if you spent the majority of your childhood in Sunday school like i did, this movie is the holy grail of religious entertainment. Lol

Truly, this may be one of the best animated films produced in the modern era.
Shocking in the sense that there's no world in which a major animation studio would ever adapt a religious text nowadays (though I could certainly see them adapting it in a different context, as they did with Shakespeare and the Lion King). Frankly, I don't blame them as attitudes- especially among those who would be considered critics- would certainly be primed to pan it regardless of quality if it was Christian affiliated (though given the state of Christian media I can't say I don't understand the bias).

Its not gonna wow everyone as an adult but this movie just hit that sweet spot for every kid of every religion, atheist or otherwise, to the core. Everyone loves it growing up. Because unlike most films these days, for a religious film, it did not force anything NOT EVEN CHRISTIANITY on anything. Christianity was just the setting but not forced down everyones throat. Thats why everyone loved it. No agendas pushed

Fun fact the scene where Moses' Egyptian mother comforts him is kinda based on how the animator's mother would comfort him. I just thought that kind of personal touch is nice and not really something you see anymore in animated movies.

    I’m an atheist
BUT IM ALSO an artist - animator and 41 yrs old - I grew up in a Christian family
However - THIS IS MY FAV ANIMATION OF ALL TIME - the story is wonderful - beautiful like most religious stories
The animation is unparalleled even to this day
    The voice acting perfect
    The song’s beautiful
But the scene with good speaking to Moses - with god coming from the sky killing the first born - with Moses turning the sea red - and not only the fire tornado but splitting the sea
Is the greatest animation accomplishment I had ever seen - a mix of 2D and 3D animation
This film made me want to become an animator and artist
I love it - truly love it -
As someone who thinks all religions are incorrect have not proven themselves to be true are born from a want of power and control and responsible for unspeakable evils
No one should judge anyone here for their religion
    Respect each other
    Beautiful film
