  • Humans need connection. We see this especially during their most troubled or vulnerable times. In grief, we give each other the longest, tightest hugs. It is often at funerals where we see people who are not family or intimate partners embrace for longer than 20 seconds. But why is that the only time? There are many scientifically proven benefits of touch, including 20-second hugs, which foster rejuvenation, stress reduction, joy, trust, self-esteem and much more. Bobby asks the question, “What if we started pro-actively engaging in a daily 20-second hug?” Hugs have a deep, rich and complex history. Our relationship with them is shaped by our family, culture and early childhood memories. Bobby, who runs several “Power of Connection” branded initiatives through his company Raeallan (www.raeallan.com), takes on the task of convincing everyone, (yes, even the hug haters!), to change the world for better in 20 seconds. By understanding our needs and fears, consent, socio-cultural context and scientific impact, he hopes to make a case for “Fierce & Fearless Hugs”. Bobby is one of Inc. Magazine’s Top 100 Leadership speakers, a 5x TEDx speaker and the founder of DYPB - Discover Your Personal Brand (www.dypb.ca). He has spoken to over 100,000 people around the world and has written three books. He speaks on social capital, personal branding, authentic networking and social media connection. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

Now I'm sad that I didn't make a conscious effort to hug you for 30 seconds when we met?

Aw that is sweet. I didn't realize you saw this. But that said, 20 sec hugs require planning for a pro-active one and are only usually organic during times of crisis.
