    Elkjær disliked the German discipline during his short stint at FC Cologne. This culminated when he was spottet clubbing in the night, with an important game coming up. His coach asked him if it was true, that he had been spotted with a bottle of whiskey and a young woman. His response is legendary: No, it was vodka and _two_ young women.
    No wonder his stint at Cologne was short-lived.
    He then went to Sporting Lokeren, and Danish national coach, Sepp Piontek, referred to him as ‘the boss of Lokeren’. And also 'the mad man of Lokeren'. He had five years there, before the culmination of his club career at Helles Verona. He is by far the best ever striker in the Danish national team.

    And add to that the 100+ goals he scored for Belgian club Lokeren! He was a gamechanger - going to a small club like Verona and making it Italian champion, that's only possible if you're one of the very best players in the world.

      That's a valid argument that the vast majority of the futbollers doesn't count on, it is important. Another example of that is Diego & Napoli.

    • @1904Ernst

      Maradona took a midtable team to the serie a title. Elkjaer took a bottom level team to a seria a title. Maradona took a mid/big national team to the world cup. Elkjaer took a low level national team to the world cup quarter final in 86, more importantly they played like contenders. Denmarks only one of two real chances of winning a world cup ever. '98 was the other one.
      - My mom thinks he is THE GOAT and then i realized this :D

    • @jatojo
      @jatojo Год назад +2

      @@1904Ernst They actually went out already in the round of 16, having won all three group matches and leading 1-0 against Spain halfway through the match. Result wise, I would say the semi of the Euros 1984 was a bigger success. (With Elkjær missing a penalty against the Spaniards - if it wasn't for Spain, maybe Denmark would have had one more of the biggest titles in football.)

    • @SuperAttitudeera
      @SuperAttitudeera Год назад +2

      I have to disagree with you here. Napoli was on the verge of relegation to serie B before Maradona came and the 86 Argentina team was really bad aside from Burruchaga and Maradona. I'll agree Larsen winning the scudetto with Hellas is a huge achievement. On a side note, that Hellas team also had Hans Peter Briegel, probably the most fit player at that time, who was essential for the teams' success along with Preben. @@1904Ernst

Danish Dynamite indeed. Excited anticipation over how far they could go in Mexico spread well outside of Denmark.

    The goal at 2:01 - he scored that one without his kicking boot, to beat Juventus (you can see in the slow-motion the boot flying around the court). Not only he always scored great goals, they were always very important ones. He's the all-time top scorer for Hellas Verona in European cups, and it was his goal that gave Verona the 1985 scudetto. He should have won the Ballon d'or that year, the guy was just unreal.

A free spirit that did things the only way he knew how and was great under coaches that allowed him to express himself like no other. To think that Allan Simonsen broke his leg in the opening match of Euro1984 against host nation France, and still Denmark has such a run, only to lose in penalties in the semis against Spain. Elkjær missing the decisive penalty. And in WC1986 in Mexico, Denmark was surely one of the very best teams. Again to be denied by Spain, though, in a frenzy by Emilio Butragueño.
    At Euro1988 the 'Danish Dynamite' team of this era were dancing their last dance, and again Spain denied them with a 3-2 in the opener. Denmark were in a crazy group of death, and some of the younger players - amongst them a certain Peter Schmeichel - played the last to games, two 2-0 defeats against Italy and Germany.
    Four years later Schmeichel would be instrumental in Denmarks Euro1992 triumph. Though the style of play were fare from exciting. We simply didn't have the same amount of talent, but won through hard work combined with the best goalkeeper in the World and an inspired Brian Laudrup. And all the luck that had denied us in 84 and 86. Then in 1993 Spain once again was the pebble in the Danish shoe - this time denying Denmark a place in WC1994 in the US.

    After the World Cup in Mexico, Elkjaer only scored one more goal for Denmark. It was strange how he declined in 2 years, in Euro'88 he looked past his best.

    Why is it Denmark are not able to produce the players it did in the 70s/80s and early 90s?
    Other countries of around their size and who were also good, still seem to be able to produce top players.
    Talking about Belgium, Holland, Portugal, Uruguay in particular here, even a newer country like Croatia.
    What happened to Danish football? Why no stars? Why no Simonsen, Elkjaer, Laudrups?

      You know Iphones, Ipad, cp games, millinials. In those golden years Denmark had,
      It was all football, in the free time, club football, school football, Danes totally loved football at that time and it produced great footballers. Today is totally different mindset.

      Tbonyandsteak But, I al guessing the other countries also have those issues?

      @@GrinddalCPH Yeah but Denmark is a little country, compared to others. Other countries have waay more talent to take from.

      Tbonyandsteak That is why I mentioned countries with comparable population sizes, like Uruguay, Croatia, and to a lesser extent Portugal and Belgium.

      What are you talking about? We had Bendtner (probably the best forward ever), Christian Poulsen (probably the best "pass to opposition player" ever) and Stig Tøfting (probably the best receiver of yellow cards ever). I think you don't give Danish football enough credit.
