Today we’re going on a Malaysian food tour in Balik Pulau, on the opposite side of Penang Island from Georgetown. We’ll eat our fill of amazing Malay fish head curry and try some of the world’s best durian straight from the source.
Follow Lindsay and Richard for durian and fruits tours: / durianwriter
Kim Laksa Balik Pulau (maps.app.goo.g...) - First for breakfast we stopped at this historical restaurant to try two different types of laka, typical Penang sour laksa, and Siam laksa, both of which were delicious. Price - 7 MYR ($1.49) per bowl, 3 MYR ($0.64) nutmeg juice
Pak Wan Kari Sembilang Kuala Jalan Bharu (maps.app.goo.g...) - Next up on this Malaysian food tour we continued for some amazing Malay food including catfish curry. Price - 49 MYR ($10.40) for everything
Eryna Cafe Curry Claypot (maps.app.goo.g...) - One of the places I was most looking forward to eating at today was Eryna for their claypot curry fish head. It was so good I wanted to drink the curry! Price - 25 MYR ($5.31) per fish head
Next I met up with my friends Lindsay and Richard (www.yearofthed...) durian lovers and experts. They took me on a durian tour to some of the premier durian farms in the mountains of Penang. Thanks to Nature Fruit Farm Resort and Soon Huat Durian Farm!
It was one of the best days of food in Penang, Malaysia!

Tq Mark... for promoting Malaysian Food to the world.
I'm malaysian been to penang 5 times but mark wiens know better places to eat than me.
Will definately visit those shops and support local businesses.
kim laksa tu nampak sedap sgt!!! ❤❤❤❤❤
Penang instantly attracted my attention and now is a top 5 destination added to my bucket list. The turmeric & coconut milk curry looks super satisfying with the addition of fresh herbs, chillies, veggies, & fish heads. The seared prawns married in that curry sauce had my senses activated just by imagining the flavors and aromas Mark was experiencing. Omgoodness Mark's reaction alone ignites my curiosity and cravings for these delicious dishes. I have been fortunate to enjoy authentic southeast Asian curries so I can imagine how delightful these flavors are. However, it's more fulfilling when you're actively in the motherland of these cuisines surrounded by lushly tropical landscapes with the fresh salty seaside aroma tasting the local ingredients and flavors of this amazing cuisines. Durian is an addictive sweet & nutty richness that makes you feel good inside thoroughly wholesome. Wow what a pleasure to experience overall!! Thanks Mark for this phenomenal content and introduction to these fantastic dishes in Penang!! Wishing you safe travels always & many more blessings!! Cheers!! 🍈🍍🥥🍆🌶🥘🍲🍛🍹
Yayy! Another Penang tour! Been following this since the start and I've learned so much about Malaysian food. Amazing production as always!
Malaysian durian is the best in the world. While traveling around Melaka recently saw a group of young China students in a school trip buying durians to eat instead of spending their money on snacks and ice cream…durian is not cheap & that area is touristy so it’s even pricier
Balik pulau durian has its own grade compared to other places and that's why it's a bit pricey.. U can find a bit cheaper in Perak.. Here they sells musang king with a reasonable price
@@mamitaita9863 What's roughly the prices in Asia/Malaysia?
@@thorpet6235 depends on which place u buy. Nowdays usually around 25-45 per kg if black thorn.. Musang king is cheaper
@@thorpet6235
Cheap = RM7/kg
Normal = RM15/kg
Expensive = RM50/kg
Flagship = RM150/kg
The no name kampong durians around the Ayer Molek area of Malacca is a secret amongst durian connoisseur
man, mark wiens & his friends really embrace their asian side esp on the durian side..the enjoyment of eating it,just priceless..
Sembilang fish is not like farm raised catfish but they are caught wild from the sea so thats why it doesnt taste muddy. Great vlog Mark!
Sembilang and baung are the best catfish you can ever had!
Penang Asam Laksa are cooked using Mackeral fish.
Shrimp paste in Malay is Petis, in Penang, the Malays there called it Otak Udang literally translated as shrimp brains.
The Vietnamese corriander leaves in Malay are called daun (leaves) Kesum, part of the Asam Laksa. condiment.
As with Johore laksa, the Vietnamese corriander leaves is served as a raw condiment.
Ikan sembilang is a coastal sea catfish.
Northern Peninsula states prefer to cook fish in spicy curry gravy, while Southern peninsula Malaysia prefer to cook fish in Cili gravy called Asam Pedas or Asam Tumis
you are so good with people! you can talk with anyone anytime, in any situation and it's never awkward :) I wish I had your social skills!
pakwan kari is most delicious malay curry in penang..also pakwan is very kind and he cook the dish is from the bottom of heart..very sincerely to give people eat ❤
I was lucky enough to live on Penang at Jalanbunga Rampia near George Town as a child in the early sixties. The Durian masterclass was exquisite Mark. Well done. Catfish head curry is something I remember very well. Remarkably the island has stood up well to modern life. I can't wait to go re-visit in two years time.
These Malaysian dishes make my mouth water😋
Come to Malaysia... 😅❤
Not all there are some which make you face food poisoning and diarrhea

Scooping the sembilang's gravy with your curry-soiled right hand like a true Malay old folks, you're really in the zone 👍🥰
Malaysian people are very hospitable.. i really love malaysia..
My friend in Penang Island bought a durian and cut it open in the room we used for me to cook an Italian dinner for a group of 12 people. I was about to throw up... he said, "You have to eat a piece, and the nausea goes away." He was right, but it was the hardest bite I ever took!
Thanks for letting us know Mark. Cant wait to see you again in Ghana.🇬🇭♥️🌍
Loving this very ‘local’ series in Penang island and mainland… man i miss my home state… gulai sembilang my ultimate fave…
🔥
Love to watch this series of Malaysian food.Mouth watering and looks so delicious. Thanks for sharing Mark.❤ Amazing video.
I can feel the taste from the video itself. Super awesome content Mark!
Mark, Sabah is waiting for you. I remembered your early days of RUclips (Migrationology) you did a short video in Kota Kinabalu. Do come back to Sabah!
Sembilang is salt water catfish, Keli is freshwater catfish and they look similar😁
Easier to scoop the rice mixed with veg, protein and gravy. Forks and spoons are available at every eating place. You can choose to use them.
@@Berley_1234 for muslim, eating with your right hand is considered following one of the prophet Muhammad peace be upon him* traditions.
It is the most satisfying way to eat. Especially when eating Eastern foods
@@Berley_1234 1. The flora and enzymes on our fingers are ingested when we eat with our hands, benefiting our digestive system. 2. When we touch the food with our fingers our mind sends a message to our stomach that we are about to eat causing it to start the digestive process even before we take the first bite.
@@Berley_1234 because that's our culture and we like it that way, and it's convenient too

I'm not a big curry fan, but after hearing, u describe it. I'd give it a shot. Great video.
Careful, it is spicy
Thanks for the awesome video, as a foodie myself and now bed bound due to illness I cannot eat much anymore. You're videos I wait for with baited breath to watch and be transported. Wish you could come to Durban in South Africa. Such great diversity of food here, fondest regards Shelly

Mat Salleh hosting a Malayan durian eat out got to be the first i've have seen here.
Dude she is not ordinary mat salleh. Her name is lindsay . published a book about durian.
Lindsay is the most knowledgeable durian expert in the world. She is also known as the Queen of Durian. She is from Hawaii and there are durian on that Island too

Haha, don’t feel bad about it. If everybody loves durian then we durian lovers will be in trouble🤪
I love watching you eat delicious food, it's very appetizing😋
Always great videos 👍
Noticed that the Malay restauranteurs always give you free food, while for the Malaysian chinese ‘we serve you,but busines is business’.
Nothing wrong, but that’s the beauty of Malaysia
As a Chinese i have to say usually malay are more friendly and open
Malay always been taught 'sedekah' will bring more blessing from Allah SWT
What's your point?
@@Atr72fc he's blowing his own trumpet.
Muslims everywhere i think i went, not just malay in malay peninsula have that culture that come from islam teachings that treating guest to your best are one of most honorable thing to do is religion regardless if their different race or religion, regardless of their background, treat guests with great respect and hospitality because it is a fundamental principle in Islam. This practice of honoring guests is deeply rooted in Islamic teachings and is a valued part of the culture in many Muslim communities around the world

Hi Mark! Come and visit Alor Setar!
Malaysians like it shrimp paste, it gives the extra ommph!. We will be in Penang next month and looking forward to durians (first) and food second.
Finally Mark come to Malaysia and promote our good food, hope you enjoy and love your video very much.❤
yoo mark video is getting better and better
Sedapnyaaa! I love durian, kari ikan, assam laksa!
Those dishes looked amazing and I have to say that the Malaysians and especially in Penang the people are soooo friendly and kind. Compared to Europe? Damn no comparison! The Malaysians put almost all the Europeans to shame. Once you visit this Island you always want to come back. Maybe I need to relocate from San Francisco to Penang, Malaysia! ❤💖😋😋😋😋
Thanks for taking me back to Penang, Best meal I ever had in my life was there.
What did you get?
Started with an incredible seafood salad. With 12 different shellfish and the seasoning sauce, yum.
Then, a fresh local fish (no idea what it was) but seasoned mildly, with a red curry sauce on the side, very nice.
Then, a porterhouse steak (about 2" thick), with asperges and baked sweet potato. All cooked perfectly.
And all that on a poor sailor's budget, it came out to be about $5 US. Incredible meal, incredible tastes, incredible price.
@@garyhervig3327 that sounds amazing. It makes me want to plan a trip to the area
Sedapnya tengok mark makan nasi campur..
I am from this hometown ….. Balik Pulau ….. makes me homesick !

I love fish head curry
Fish head curries looked so yummy but so spicy. Love durian but I don't think I would love to smell it everywhere I go on the island. Malaysian durians are truly the best in the world 🤤
lol I think Mark is sold on the eating with your hands thing :D
I would never eat a pipis hot curry with my hands.
True legend.
Love your facial expressions when you eat I can tell your enjoying it, passionate about it, and the experience with enthusiasm!!! That’s why I watch you, so much joy!!🩵🦋
Mark ,you should try to go to east Malaysia . And try the different tribes foods and local food and seafoods .
damn this making me hungry again 😨🤤 as always, love your video. keep it up
Omg, I need this food right now, can't get it, I'm salivating for real. Asian cuisine is the best!!!
This was definitely a great video Mark!
Very nice zabdast shering beautiful views big like
Kampung (village) durian is less fleshy, less filling but more complex taste. I love it more than Musang King.
Well originally durians came from village durian. But Malaysian scientists performed grafting of the varieties to perfect the species. Thus d197 musang king was a success all over the world.
try tok litok durian in Kelantan to taste different
No matter what’s the outcome of the food whether it’s sour, spicy, sweet, salty, tasteless or delicious, Mark’s facial expressions remains smiling at all times. That’s the gist from the land of smile 😀
Let's put the fish head into my plate to explore it more lol Rare sight for a Westerner who can enjoy fish head curry and using his hand 👍
The food loook so good.
Get at it!
Thank you sir for introduce Malaysia to the world again, especially my hometown Penang. God bless you and your family.
I loved the Durian tour, fascinating and I'd love to try it myself. Where is Micha?

Balik Pulau means:
Backside/Otherside of the Island
this name is believed to be popularized by people from the mainland as reference from their point of view when entering the Penang Island
Man... Mouth watering 🤤
