I just love dual wielding in my fantasy genre games! I did something similar, though went Gloomstalker/Thief. You get almost everything here and Dread Ambusher. In the first round DA gives you 3 meters more movement and gives you an extra attack that deals an additional 1d8 damage. You really can't go wrong either way!

I just found out great synergy between gloomstalker and assassin for stranding and assassinating targets 1 by 1:
Backstab enemy>replenish both actions>dread ambush>2 attacks. So instead of 1 extra secondary attack you get nice burst with crits as assassin is loaded with passives at lvl 3

    3 rogue(thief),
    3barb(frenzied),
1monk(double unarmed with extra bonus attack)
    5 fighter(action surge/feat/extra attack)
with this, you get extra bonus which you can use a ki point for, for 2 attacks. (which you could use both bonus actions for 4 attacks if you wanted/needed to)
while raging you do extra dmg with all your attacks... And you get an extra frenzied attack.
Action surge gives you another attack, and battlemaster gives you superiority die you can use for that extra attack
so with this build you can have 7 attacks in one round using ki and action surge, and if not, you can still get 4 attacks with frenzied and your 3 rogue attacks. And by raging, you do extra damage with those 4 standard attacks, and of course even more on your extra 3/4 attacks when you need to bust out the big guns.
also, you can go unarmored with this build, with 16dex and 16con and the level in barb, you get a +6 to ac, and you can get armor ward(level 1 cleric spell) to add a plus 1 and you can get shield of faith for another 2, bringing you up to 19ac, at level 2...this is what I did with my dual wielder in tactical. level 1 rogue for the proficiencies. If you kill the cambions level 1 on the nautaloid you hit level 3 (it's not an easy fight but the massive EXP boost from tactical for killing them makes it SUPER worth it) so you go rogue, barb, fighter. Here it depends on you...personally I went another fighter for action surge, but you can 2 level rush rogue for the bonus action if that is more important. however, after you get your thief sublcass, you wanna pick up monk. Monk goes REALLY well with that extra bonus action because you can use that bonus action because you can spend 1 ki for 2 extra attacks. if you wanna save these for a big fight, you can use BOTH your bonus actions to do FOUR unarmed strikes and then use your main attack...for 5 attacks in one round. with rage adding dmg...
So rogue, barb, fighter, rogue, rogue, monk then all fighter rest of the game. if you wanted to wait until level 7 when the full build comes online, you can just straight play your fav class like fighter or warlock or whatever, until level 7, then respec into 3rogue, 1monk, 1barb, 2 fighter. all the fighter levels after that add bigly to the build, so each level is HELLA satisfying.
There is no specific feat that makes or breaks this build...you can pick dual wield if you have 2 non light finesse weapons at your disposal(not even sure if this is a thing) or you can just add 2 ability points to dex. or you can respec so your dex is 17 and con is 15 so you can put a point in each for 18/16 respectively, keeping the rest of your scores balanced out since you don't need wis for your monk but, since it's for perception and ilithid stuff...it's not a terrible stat to have a few points in. you can sac str completely unless you wanna use shove...but you'll be zippin around the battlefield hard so...I don't see the point.
if all you want from barb is rage and the ac(not a terrible 1level dip if i say so myself) you can go 6fighter 4rogue 1barb 1monk for full 3 feats whiles till getting the ki attacks and rage dmg and con to ac from monk/barb, the extra attack from fighter and the 2 extra feats as well as the dual wield fighting style and action surge...
6 fighter is just stupid. any build you can make with 6 fighter is going to be hella op. 5 warlock 7fighter(going Eldridtch Knight) is stupid op for the war caster ability you get at fighter 7. and the extra warlock attack at 5 and extra fighter attack at 5, stack...unlike other martial classes, and at level 12, with war caster, you get to melee attack after casting a cantrip. and eldritch blast has 2 attacks each use at level 5...so you can cantrip for 2 attacks, melee, action surge, cantrip 2 attacks, melee, then throw your weapon with your EK level 3 ability for 7 attacks in one round while wearing full heavy armor and with a 20 charisma and 16 con and 16wis. since you don't need str/dex for this build at all. you can basically do the rest of your ability points as you wish. but 20charsima is a must so you want actor or performer feat with the ability score feat for 2 more points making your starting 17, into 20. since charisma through the warlocks blade pact means your melee and spells all use the same dmg stat, and you add your charisma modifier to your eldritch blast through an invocation, of which you get 3 of at level 5warlock. plus you get armor of agathas, hellish rebuke, and mirror image spells so you're even tankier and damaging passively, so you can literally just fling eblasts and slap shit with your 1h weapon while being almost invulnerable, but when they do get a hit through, they eat cold dmg from agathas and fire dmg from hellish rebuke, which after a short rest you get more rebukes back, and if you need more tankiness, 9more ac from mirror image is at your beck and call...
*Edit: I forgot the blade pact doesn't work with weapon bind from ek 3, since it says you can't throw or drop your pact weapon.... but even without the throw or if you have another weapon that's not a pact weapon like going dual wielding, you could pact one and bind the other... i think that should work. losing the 2 ac for a bonus melee or ranged attack each round is not the worst trade off i've ever seen.

@@ZeriocTheTank It has its benefits - if a target is on a few HP, you can use an offhand crossbow attack to kill it and then use the mainhand attack on the tougher enemies. I'm using them until I can find a good long/short bow to return to. I also have a shortsword and a finesse longsword.

@@donkeysunitedphalar eluve and larethians wrath are two great longswords each with awesome weapon skills and most importantly; the finesse property. So you can finesse dual wield long swords with dual wielder feat.
Alt: you can build a dex based great weapon master barbarian using one of these swords in one hand for the d10 damage. And great weapon feat plus sneak attack is good so multiclass barbarian rouge works well. Also there is armor that grants +2dex and advantage on dex checks. Great for either of these builds

This is exactly the build I've been playing on Astarion for a while. I didn't plan it, I just lean towards Thief and dual crossbows with him anyway and found the gear to support it so it just happened. I didn't take his first Fighter level until level 6, but even one level for 2WF is a massive upgrade and worth it even if you stop at one. But every level after adds something great.

    • @jameshill2450
      @jameshill2450 Год назад +1

I'm getting to the endgame now and I've made him a Fighter 6/Rogue 5/Warlock 1. The last level of Fighter or Rogue didn't really offer much, so I picked up 1 Warlock. The Old One subclass ability frightens nearby enemies when I crit, and I get Hex (which doesn't rely on Cha) for extra damage on everything. I picked up Tasha's Laughter too, probably won't use it but it's a saving throw so it also doesn't require Charisma.
The cantrips don't really matter, but you can grab Blade Ward if you want it or Minor Illusion if you have any stealing left to do. Blade Ward isn't bad with this build because you can still do some good damage with your offhand.

  • @mongobongo1147
    @mongobongo1147 Год назад +7

The other option to this is to go pure STR + Heavy armor without need for Ability Improvement feat (start 17 STR +1 Hag +2 Potion). Since you don't get Sneak Attacks with your off-hand you can use a non-finesse weapon there for more effects, and your lower DEX/Initiative actually allows other melee characters to get in position so you can trigger Sneak Attacks with your main-hand finesse weapon (Phalar longsword). Also using Trip maneuver can give you Advantage for Sneak Attack damage with second attack.

you get a much better selection of weapons by using STR (chug an elixir of hill giant strength if you need to) and not limiting yourself to just finesse weapons (basically only rapiers). Astarion is the perfect companion for this if you ascend him, as one of the perks is 1d10 necrotic damage to weapon attacks. be sure to take the "savage attackers" feat, as this rerolls all damage die, including the elemental die. throw in Helldusk gloves for additional 1d6 fire damage

I’ve done a similar build on Astarion, but I did 4 lvls rogue/thief, dipped 2 into Ranger for Hunters mark, then 6 into champion fighter. Got sharpshooter, ASI, and dex resilient, and luck of the far realms. Thinking of getting the dark urge cloak for the next play through, but I’m using the Cloak of Cunning Brume right now. With the dip in 2 ranger it allows you to get both two weapon master and archery to stack with your crossbows hits also thought about great weapon master for duel daggers or scimitars builds or savage attacker since if you start of the match with the enemy surprised you get a free critical and those along with champion will give you more free attacks. Combine that with the dark urge cloak and I imagine it’ll be pretty darn good.

As a dex based fighter you dont need the heavy armor proficiency. So it is better under most circumstances to respec at level 6 OR just play 1 level behind.

People sleeping on dual wield are just noobs. I did the same build for my karlah (5 lvl fighter, 7 lvl rogue for better sneak attack). While carring two rapriers +2 with extra 1d4 psychic damage each. She was melting everything on Tactician difficulty. Also, if you find gear that gives you just extra damage to EACH attack, you gain more from dual wield, than from two hander weapon. On top of that, the DEX build is always better option than pure STR damage dealer. The bonuses from DEX were always better than STR in DnD. Even if one have already meele damage dealer, it is always good to have another damage dealer class that gain bonus from DEX, due to the fact that DEX damage dealer willl use different armour, different weapons (finesse) and ranged weapons. The amount of gear you can find for dual wielder is amazing. The feats for dual wilder are also amazing.
This build is my favourite in this game, much more enjoyable and versitile than some OP paladin/warlock smite / heavy armor / two hander builds.

I think the fighter class is very lackluster compared to ranger + thief.
While playing a ranger 5 / rogue 3 you already absolutely melt targets and there are synergies that don't exist with fighter.
First, Hunter subclass add 1d8 damage on target that are not full HP. Add hunter's mark and ring of conduit (found in the Githyanki crève after the inquisitor fight) and caustic band( Myconid Colony) and Nere's Sword, and a normal round will see you :
    - Attack 4 times with your main and offhand
    - Each attack adds 2 + 2d4 + 1d6 +1d8 (6-24) to the baseline damage.
    - Each offhand attack adds 2 + 1d4 + 1d6 (colossus slayer isn't counted twice I believe)
So if you simply normally attack, your total damage will be :
    - 2 x (1d8+DEX + 2 + 2d4 + 1d6 + 1d8) = 20-72 (main)
    - 2x (1d8+DEX + 2 + 1d4 + 1d6) = 18-48 (off-hand)
    with a simple 18 DEX (+4 bonus)
Now, you can add a level 2 fighter class for two more attacks if that's your thing, so a level 10 character can do a potential 48-156.

Ended up respecing Astarion to a kinda similar build during my first playthrough. Here's my thoughts on it:
By going for strength you may loose your ability to use crossbows but you've opened yourself up to a giant arsenal of nice weapons you'll find during your playthrough, like the spear in dank crypt that automatically casts true strike on a miss, the mace that casts faerie fire on a miss once per rest, both of which are amazing at granting advantage and reliably triggering your sneak attack, or lots of weapons with extra damage dice.
You also can wear heavy armor and the infernal legion mask, granting 2-3 members of your party 2-3 extra strength.
Online resources state that sneak attack damage only triggers when made with a finesse weapon, but fortunately you can still use strength for finesse damage calculation if it's higher than your dex. Also there seems to be a bug with that since i've also triggered sneak attack damage using longswords.
Leveling progression was 1lv fighter -> 4 lvls of rouge for dual wielder feat-> get to fighter 5 for an extra attack -> get rouge7 if you want more sneak attack and the evasion feature which feels great or go fighter 8 for more stat points.
Astarion is a great character to do this build with as he can heal with his vampire bite using a bonus action (which he has plenty of)

If you add a single level of monk, you can use any weapon with dexterity, not just finesse weapons (except two handers, but that's irrelevant). Shar's Spear of Evening being a pretty cool one, adding its bonus damage to your offhand too (and it's piercing damage, so Bhaalist Armour doubles it).

str base monk/fighter is great cause you can get up to 24 str (mirror of loss -2, +2) with Tavern Brawler that's +14 to attack rolls and damage.
plus gear and skills that's like 22-40 per punch 66-120 per round with basic auto with 24 AC, 26 AC with shield of faith, 27 AC with fighting style
or you can go monk/rouge for that extra bonus action giving you about 88-160 per turn with just punching . ( I am 90% sure on these number)
Also your hit chance is very high cause Tavern Brawler OP
this build(monk/rouge) works only if you get the legendary armor (HELLDUSK ARMOUR- you have to rob a place for this armor) 21 AC cause all class can wear this armor

You don't need a rogue for picking locks. Anyone with good DEX and a lockpick kit can do it. Even better if they have Sleight of Hand. I use my Ranger to pick locks and disarm traps.

  • @bighorse9734
    @bighorse9734 Год назад

Dual wield crossbows dont require two weapon fighting style. Your offhand hand cross bow always recieve your ability score modifier its damage, unlike melee weapon. Which is why dual wield handcross bow you want Archery for +2 to hit, but for dual wield melee weapons, you need two weapon fighting style. In the end a ranger is a stronger dual wielder then the fighter due to passive sub class perks, which outweight Action surge. Depends on level of your character though. In general dual wielding melee weapons is really bad in DND due to the Great weapon master feat giving you +10 damage per attack, and an extra attack as a bonus action on a kill or critical hit.
However, Dual wielding crossbows though thats something else together and extremly strong and can utlize the rogues sneak damage every turn unlike the melee variant.

Sort of doing this on my main who is currently a swords bard 6/fighter 1. Two weapon fighting and archery fighting styles. Ranged slashing flourish is tech extra attack as well since you can target the same target twice or multiple targets. He is also the face of the party so filled two roles with
    One character.
Now that I think of it, may try bard 8/thief rogue 4 as well.

Going 12 fighter makes more sense, due to improved extra Attack, you will always do more attacks:
    - DW 8 fighter - 4 rogue: 4 attacks (action+bonus+action+bonus), with haste or action surge 6 attacks (a+b+a+b+a+a), with haste and action surge 8 attacks (a+b+a+b+a+a+a+a)
    - DW 12 fighter: 4 attacks (a+b+a+a), with haste or action surge 7 attacks (a+b+a+a+a+a+a), with haste and action surge 10 attacks (a+b+a+a+a+a+a+a+a+a)
    - 1-handed 12 fighter: 3 attacks, with haste 6 attacks, with haste and action surge 9 attacks.
Dual wielding AND taking the second bonus action makes no sense at all (same number of attacks, fewer with haste and/or action surge).
Dual wielding without the second bonus action is a bit better, but you must "waste" 1 feat and 1 combat style for only 1 more attack per turn, not worth it IMHO.

Question. I was thinking of a Two Weapon fighter build recently and I'm wondering at max level, wouldn't it be better to go full fighter? With Improved extra attack, you still have the same 4 attacks most turns, but with Action Surge that'll be 7 attacks (vs. 6 if you do Fighter/Rogue) wouldn't it? The only advantage I can think of to go Fighter/Rogue is if it's the main character/face of the party and you maybe need the extra skill proficiencies, but I'm not sure if there's something else I'm missing.

Why rogue? Straight Fighter gets 7 attacks first round, 4 each round after. Potion of speed also is better on a fighter.
Not to mention you get battlemaster maneuvers which are superior to sneak attack.
Also you get 4 feats so can take asi, alert, savage attacker and dual wielder to use strength weapons.
Or dump savage for tavern brawler and use dwarven thrower or the Trident in main hand, the +3 mace in off hand.
