  • The Contrarians is a show where one of us jumps in the hot seat picks a dark horse album from a band as that band's best album. The guest host will argue against them with facts, stats and all around truth, subjective and objective!

Great show. I was working in a record store during the Jacksons Victory record. Yeah, it sold millions. But they were presold to the stores. We literally couldn't give them away. The label would not accept returns.

Actually, the most dated eighties thing at all is The Contrarians theme... Just saying

    I'd include:
    - Yes: Big Generator
    - Genesis: Invisible Touch
    - ELO: Balance of Power
    - Foreigner: Agent Provocateur
    - Ian Anderson: Walk Into the Light
    - Thomas Dolby: The Flat Earth
    - The Moody Blues: The Other Side of Life
    - Emerson, Lake & Powell: ST
    - Blondie: Eat to the Beat
I know this is from 1979 but screams 1980s. If I gave it a brief glance, I would have thought of it as a cover of a synth pop band around 1983-'84.
    - Prince: Purple Rain
    - Too many album covers by hair metal bands, especially the band logos and of course the appearance of the band members themselves.
    - King Crimson: Beat
    - King Crimson: Three of a Perfect Pair
I like the cover to Discipline (doesn't look one bit dated) but these two, not so much, both looks dated '80s.
    - David Bowie: Never Let Me Down
    - Joe Satriani: Surfing With the Alien
    - 3: To the Power of Three

Even Zappa couldn't escape the 80 s look with "Broadway the Hard Way" and " Man from Utopia". Obscure but SO 80 s: (Ornette Colman bassist( Jamaldeen Tacuma's " Show Stopper".

I suspect the Broadway the Hard Way cover was a nod to Zappa's appearance on Miami Vice.

The Rick Medlocke and Blackfoot album from 1987. Medlocke, looks like David Lee Roth's long-lost brother on the cover.

Starship - No Protection, the black and white shots on the back cover are better. They used those for the It's Not Over Till It's Over picture sleeve too.
Jefferson Airplane - 1989 Self Titled, Grace Slick looks like Elaine from Seinfeld.

The covers (Skunk/4us) of the Dutch band Doe Maar. Man it was like they invented the color combination of pink and green.
They were huge in The Netherland and their look/asthetic had a big impact over here in the early 80's. Not my cup of tea but pretty good reaggea ska punk pop.

Good one, Jame. That Kenny G album cover makes Billy Squier look masculine. The 80s album covers that come to mind now are:
Most of INXS' covers before Listen Like Thieves
Mr. Mister - Welcome to the Real World
Most Duran Duran albums (Especially Rio)
Wham - Fantastic, Make It Big, Music From the Edge of Heaven
    Journey - Escape
Robert Plant's first three albums (Especially Shaken-n-Stirred)
Def Leppard's first three albums (Especially All Through the Night)
Outfield - Play Deep (I was thinking about that one too!)
    U2 - October

Great show guys, some great choices! I waited until the end to push enter with my choices, figured no one would pick Platinum Blonde, it was my first choice! lol Great pick Grant, I'm keeping it on my list! lol Here is a some of mine, some of which I love the album and even like the covers but definitely dated to the 80's.
    Platinum Blonde - Alien Shores ( 1985 )
    Thompson Twins - Into the Gap ( 1984 )
    Helix - Long Way to Heaven ( 1985 )
Men Without Hats - Pop Goes the World ( 1987 )
David Lee Roth - Crazy From The Heat ( 1985 )
Jermaine Jackson - Let Me Tickle Your Fancy ( 1982 )
Poison - Look What The Cat Dragged In ( 1986 )
    A Flock of Seagulls - Dream Come True ( 1986 )
Sting - Bring on the Night ( live album, 1986 )
    Queen - Hot Space ( 1982 )
    Alice Cooper - Constrictor ( 1986 )
    Ozzy Osbourne - The Ultimate Sin ( 1986 )
    Twisted Sister - Under the Blade ( 1982 )
    King Diamond - Conspiracy ( 1989 )
    Devo - Oh No!, it's Devo ( 1982 )
    etc etc etc.
