- This is a short video to answer some of the questions I've gotten.
Part Numbers:
Carb - Edelbrock 1406
Carb Calibration Kit - Edelbrock 1487
Intake Manifold - Edelbrock 2701
Fuel Pressure Regulator - Holley 12-887
Distributor - Accel 59107 - Авто/Мото
7-18-2023 I done the same swap on my truck and I noticed you said something about the distributor I was thinking the same thing with my distributor. It appears that I have the same type you have I was always trying to get in tune better then what I know it could have been come to find out I forgot to take the high pressure fuel filter off the gas line because I am using a external inline fuel pump that delivers between 5 and 8 lb of pressure for the carburetor. So after I remove the high-pressure gas filter for the stock in tank fuel pump it ran a lot better was not starving for gas at higher RPMs .
Glad you got it working! 👌
Best news I've heard all day you don't have to have throttle positioning sensor if you have a manual transmission pickup
Just a note for others that may be watching, if you have a 700r4/4l60 transmission (NOT 4l60e), you don't need to bother with keeping the TPS. 700r4/4l60 transmissions aren't electronically controlled, so you only need the adapter linkage for your throttle valve cable to attach to your carb with the correct geometry.
Good to know. Thanks for the info!
I think i have a 4l60e (since i dont have a kickdown/ TV cable) and i just carb swapped it and i dont have a tps and it shifts fine, my only problem is that when it gets to max operating temp it surges in and out while in gear and wants to die i cant even breathe on the gas or it will die but i put in park or neutral and its idles and revs up fine but when its cold i can stomp on it and it runs fine, any help is appreciated
Hey bro do you by any chance have a link or a specific product for that item you’re talking about I have a 700r4
7-18-2023 what I did I use the original positioning sensor on the throttle body and use the entire throttle body 1) just bring it over in front of the carburetor and 2) line it up with the carburetor 3) made a bracket for to hold it still and 4)cut a bicycle brake cable and 5)connect the cable to the throttle positioning sensor cam and carburetor. So when the gas pedal move the carburetor and throttle positioning sensor cam move the same time. The good part about this is, It don't have to be adjust it because it's already set from the factory with the cam that the cable connect to because the cam is not round like a circle .
What about th350?
good video

we got the same carb watching your video i see why i might be burning alot of fuel..
They actually make an intake for tbi to carb swap I did it on my 92 Camaro
I have a 1993 Chevy pick up with a 350 engine I’m swapping from TBI to Carburetor just had questions about your Throttle position sensor bracket I was just wanting a little more detailed explanation of how you mounted it to the manifold and got it to work
Mine's probably not the best solution, to be honest. It's just random stuff I threw together. It gets the job done, but like I said in the video, it's not going to be permanent.
You'd probably be better off with one of these: www.usshift.com/tps.shtml
Just put your own throttle position sensor on it.
I just did a built vortec swap with holley 750 into a 93 k1500 with 4l60e. I bought the Holley tps kit and the factory tps harness matched and plugged right in, adjusted to .54 volts at idle as per spec. Ive got the stock VSS connected to the transfer case, and the HEI tach signal tied into the purple/white wire on the factory tbi distributor harness. Map sensor is also connected and has a vacuum signal. Ive got an LT4 hotcam pulling 12 inches of vacuum.
My 4l60 shifts every gear and lockup works. My problem is the trans has no line pressure rise during shifts. It will slip and tach out during 1-2 and 2-3 shifts. I let up and it grabs and holds to WOT. I turned the force motor up 1/4 turn and it helped some at part throttle shifts, but anything near half throttle to wide open throttle it wont hold the shifts.
I built this trans 4 years ago with all the good stuff. And it worked great up until 2 days ago when I swapped engines. I checked the wiring and its all good from the trans to the ecm but i have not checked a signal from the ecm to the eps. There are two wires, one is low pressure signal and one is high pressure signal. I feel like there is no hi pressure command going to the epc. I have yet to put a guage on it to see the hydraulic pressures, but dont figure i need to. Its self proven because it will slip every shift. Ive got a .500 boost valve and .297 rev boost valve, elevated pressure regulator spring and valve, along with everything else that comes with a Transgo HD2 kit. Ive looked all over the net but cannot find whats not telling the ecm to raise line pressure.
That's a little above my pay grade. Let me do some checking, and I'll see if I can find something.
@@Jerkwad152 just to add, I unpinned the EPC wires from the ecm and nothing changed. That along with turning the force motor a 1/4 turn, it should be breaking my neck shifting.
@@HotrodsWelding
I haven't been able to turn up anything. The only thing I can guess is that there's a broken connection somewhere.
@@HotrodsWelding you've got something off somewhere communication wise especially if it was shifting fine until you changed engines
So, after months of trying to make this work, I contacted Harris Tuning, and found out my ecm is stuck in limp mode. Because I'm not running the fuel injection, the oxygen sensors are not working to correct air fuel ratio. Along with not using the tbi distributor has the ecm angry. I burnt my transmission up trying this feat. I do not recommend. I purchased a Fitech Goshift controller and cured my problems. Now my problem is a burnt band and burnt 3-4 clutches from driving without a rise in line pressure during the shifts. So the unit now has to come out again. I just built this transmission 4 years ago with all the good stuff. It only has 30k on it. And I've been building these for 20 years. Before the engine swap I had no problems. I followed everyone's directions to a T, and found they were all wrong.
Stuffed a 82 454 with carb into 94 tbi truck with 4l80e. Trans is stuck in high gear. Made tps bracket. Purple whi wire to tach. ??
I got a three wire tps where do I connect the other two wires to make my 94 4l60e tranny to shift
ordered my adapter sleeves for my intake for 12.98 on ebay, for all four.
Nice.
Hey man I’m doing the exact same thing some people say the purple and white wire is for that fuel pump. I can’t seem to get my carb to spray fuel it’s brand new. I was wondering if I hook that wire to the tac side of the distributor if I will get fuel because after the pump initially sprays no more fuel will come from the lines
Hook the purple and white wire to the tach lead. That's required for the fuel pump and transmission.
I'm having problems with mines my fuel pressure drops to 0.when I turn the key it goes to 7psi then drops
Make sure you run the extra tach lead to the purple/white wire like I showed in the video, otherwise your fuel pump won't stay running.
EDIT: Also, you want to use a proper bypass regulator, and set it to no more than 5 psi.
What stuff needed to be grounded out from the factory harness.? And where did you pull power from for the distributor
Grounded? Nothing. Except for the connectors that I pointed out in the video, I just stuck everything else off to the side.
As for powering the distributor, I just used the red 12V wire that went to the original TBI coil.
hey i got the same pressure regulator you have i notice u dont have the outlet vacuum port line hook up .i thought u have to have that hook up.. .. im having a problem trying to get my truck to run i just put a brand new edelbrock 1406 carb on it got my fuel pressure set a 6 but im getting backfire popping out my exhaust i don t have the vacuum hose hook up coming from my regulator ..i wonder is that why...let me no what you think..
That port is used for a fuel pressure gauge.
I would set the fuel pressure at 4-5, rather than 6, but that's not _bad_ .
As for backfiring, check all the usual suspects: float levels, vacuum leaks, timing.
i keep searching and seem to miss or no one is showing how to hook up distributor and wires to hook up to relay to make fuel pump run
I went over that in detail in the video.
Run the wires and TPS just like I show, and you won't have a problem.
Got another question my transmission ain’t shifting I got a tps kit but it doesn’t show instructions how to wire it up do I use the same color wires from the harness from the tps? Also the tac wire u was talking about running the white wire to the purple wire with white stripe or the purple wire with white stripes and the white wire next to it connect them together?
If the colors match up, then you should match them up. Double-check the directions for it, of course.
The purple/white wire goes to the same tach lead that goes to the coil. Make sure the tach lead connects to both the proper terminal on the coil and the purple/white wire.
Your vehicle should have a second tach lead already spliced into the main tach wire. In which case, you can just run one end to the coil, and the second lead to the purple/white wire. That's what I did. You'll recognize it easily by the black connector with a regular spade terminal.
Your transmission absolutely needs both the TPS and tach signal to shift properly.
Hello.. what kind or size of filter are u using in ur vavlve cover. Looks cool. Looking for better set up for my vavle cover.
I want to say 3/4 inch. It definitely breathes better. I did have to change the grommet for a bigger one.
Sounds good. Thanks for the reply
Running the stiffest spring will kill yr milage ! Ive worked on these fr 40 years ! I run the yellow spring fr milage . 4 hg . That way vaccum has ta drop a little more before the primary needles stage power mode . I tried the stiffest spring on my first welding truck . I lost 4 miles to the gallon with the stiffest spring cause it stayed in power mode all the time ! That was on a 390 with a 268 comp cam . In my 71 f350 . Truck weighed just a little under 12,000 pounds . With the yellow spring i got just about 14 miles to the gallon ! Pretty good fr a truck that heavy ! My holley buddys all get 10 miles to the gallon . Ill take a q jet over any thing ! 16 miles to the gallon in my 77 chevy
400 sbc . 35/12.50 tires . And i KILL holleys all day long with it ! Nothin pulls like a spreadbore !
I try not to be too proud to try other things. I slapped the blue springs in, and we'll see how it goes. Runs fine, so the worst that could happen is I wasted a couple of minutes.
@@Jerkwad152 the stiff springs were cool fr a day lol . I d be cruisin in the ol weldin truck . Id come up on a hill with the stiff springs . Didnt have ta give it any more gas . Slightest hill n they go ta power mode . Kinda cool ! Just killed my mileage though . I spend 1500 a month on fuel . So it made to big of a diff to ignore for me . Be safe brother !
Which wire did you source for your electric fuel pump to function normally? Mine is only doing the 3 second startup then when it stops I run out of gas once the carburetor runs dry. Thanks. Others had said that the purple wire you mentioned was supposed to activate the fuel pump beyond the startup phase. It doesn't do it for mine.
Run the purple/white wire just like I showed in the video.
@@Jerkwad152 I did, but it didn't work on my vehicle and I pulled my distributor and double checked wires and connections. It doesn't matter now, as my vehicle burned up on my first test drive. Thanks for replying.
@@TheShadeTreeFixitMan
I just took a peek at your video. That really sucks. Sorry for your loss.
Unfortunately, pretty much none of what I did in this video would apply to a 2002 model anyway.
@@Jerkwad152 Thanks
the wire coming out of the distributor and going to the speed sensor, does it connect to purple or white? thanks !
There is an extra tach lead in the conduit where the distributor wires come from. It's a white wire with a terminal already attached. Run that one to the purple and white wire.
I have a 1995. I don’t have a purple and white in that harness. Could it be blue and white? What letter is stamped in the original connector?
89 2500 5.7 running holley 3310-2 th400 trans. Do I really need a tps?
For a TH400, no. But you still need the purple/white wire like I showed, for the fuel pump.
What about the pump mine won’t stay on just prime the system and shut off what could that be?
Make certain you connect the tach lead to the purple and white wire like I showed in the video. Your fuel pump and transmission both require it.
Jerkwad152 ah hell I have it connected to the White wire and manual transmission so I should be good
@@nicholasjohnson2931
Ah. Let me know how it goes.
Did you have to change out your gas tank to do a return style fuel system
@@aliaswizard6963
No, all the TBI trucks have a return syatem already.
@@Jerkwad152 thanks
Great video... I have a 4spd. Do i need to keep any of the sensors?
You still need to run the purple/white wire like I showed for the fuel pump to work properly, but you don't need the TPS anymore.
Tps is what locks up the converter.
are you still using the same computer of the tbi for the transmission? been looking up vids or info on it.. want to remove the tbi with all the wiring out
Yes, I'm using the original computer to control the transmission. it doesn't control anything else. The alternative is spending a bunch of money on a standalone transmission controller, which wouldn't really be any better.
I guess, if you wanted to pretty the engine bay up some, you could chop everything else out, except for the connectors I pointed out.
@@Jerkwad152 thanks man i really appreciated for the info
Nice video .. i have 90 silverado 7.4 th400 and i slapped a holley in it and my question is do i need the ignition control module, tps , map sensor, oxygen sensor? Also on the fuel it runs but shuts off but if i step on the pedal it would stay on untill i let go so what can i do ?

I had the same issue.
Couldn't seem to find the right wire to keep fuel pump going after initial prime mode.
I found a "fuel pump" bypass wire (blade connector) coming out of the fuel pump relay and connected it to a "switched" 12 volt power source. Don't know if anyone else tried this but do far it works.
I also put a 15 amp fuse in line.
Just in case ...

There's an extra tach lead sticking out of the harness where the coil lead comes from. I ran that one to the purple/white wire.

I made one error: The intake is a *_2701_* , not a 2101. The 2101 is a spread-bore intake.
What wires did you use for your distributor from the old harness??
@@jonathanlawson4667
I ran the red 12V wire and white tach wire that went to the original TBI coil to the new distributor. Easy-peasy.
@Superduper DavidMiorgan
It depends on the carburetor you're using. If you're using a square-bore carburetor, use the 2701. If you're using spread-bore, use a 2101. They both cost about the same.
@Superduper DavidMiorgan
2701 and 2101 are both small block Chevy intakes anyway, man. Neither one would have worked on a Dodge. :D
How did you get your fuel pump to run while engine running?
@@Jerkwad152what other colors wires is on the connector with the purple/white wire because I see two connectors with the purple/white wire
What is your MPG's city and highway ? On this setup. Or did you already put in a manual transmission and got different MPG's readings
12-14, about the same as TBI. I haven't yet managed to find a junkyard T56 to rebuild, so it's still running the 4L60E.
When I do get ahold of one, the installation should make for quite a video.
Thank you. I appreciate it. And thank you for the video. Did you had any issues with passing emissions? I'm from Arizona.
@@armandomendoza3167
I'm not sure what the law is in Arizona. In Texas, if your vehicle is 25 years old or older, you don't take the emission test anymore, just the basic safety inspection.

Hey brother what’s the fuel pressure regulator number
Holley 12-887, set to ~5 psi.
Hi, need help I want to swap my efi to carb, changing my submerge hi fuel pump to a outside low fuel pressure pump, which fuel line I can use to my low pressure pump?
Just follow the line out of the fuel filter. That's the inlet line you want for the mechanical pump.
You can just disconnect the fuel pump relay and pull right through it, you don't even have to drop the tank.
I would still recommend running the same fuel pressure regulator and return line system, though. It just works out a lot better for consistency and fuel economy.
@@Jerkwad152thank you for helping me out, do I need to take out the old fuel pump that inside the gas tank if is use same line?

You can take it out if you want, and stick a piece of fuel hose in where it was, but it's not absolutely necessary. Just disconnect the relay.

Do I have to have a throttle positioning sensor if I'm running a th350 or th400 trans in my 88 gmc square body
Not to my knowledge. But you will obviously still need the kickdown cable and vacuum modulator. Also, you still need to run the purple/white wire in order for the fuel pump to work.

I can't really recommend my TPS setup. Like I said, it's only temporary. While it works for me, it's just random scrap metal I happened to have laying around.
