      I know you're right, but Wise man, you are. In my old days, my friends and I also discovered that you can go really fast in reverse and then slam it into drive for a wicked burnout.......in a rental car that is.

      rinos88 my buddy had a 77 impala station wagon, and when the roads have that tar oozing up that's the best. Drop it in reverse at 45 miles an hour and nail the gas, you have one spinning tire that is slowing the vehicle down LOL

      MrTheHillfolk I was at the drag strip 2 years ago and noticed a kid in line to race with a new Taurus. I asked him if he had done anything to it and his response was 'No. It's a rental. I picked it up today. I told them I was visiting my mom. They have no clue what I'm doing with it.'

    In an automatic transmission, the reverse gear is simply the first gear but, well, reversed. So essentially the car would go as fast backwards as it could go forwards in first gear.

    • @GTR2509
      @GTR2509 7 лет назад +13

      It is always like that, even with the manual. Reverse is always the same as the first gear.

      acoundou Why did you specify "in a automatic transmission"?

    • @Zezims
      @Zezims 7 лет назад +17

      Justice In the 3 Manual vehicles I've driven and looked into, the reverse gear is a higher gear ratio than the normal 1st gear. Therefore, there is a difference that would require him to specify "in an auto". That's assuming all autos are the same, I doubt it but I do not know.

    • @noldevin

    • @jimmypena2442

    • @ryfodrea
      @ryfodrea 7 лет назад +21

      In theory it would be faster than something with a planetary or standard, but like Jimmy said, they set the limiter much lower when you are in reverse compared to forward. If you fucked with the software you could get it to go faster, but I honestly wouldn't wanna drive that fast in reverse.

    • @genius3258

      Not sure about that but a golf 2 3 speed automatic was pretty fast in reverse.
      It had transmission that actually shifted gears up even in reverse.. dont know how exactly that worked but you theoretically could be as fast in reverse as in forward

      I don't think so. He hit 40 and it didn't sound like the engine was at its max RPM, but 40 is in the neighborhood of max 1st gear speed for that car. I had a 2000 Taurus, and it would do 20 mph at about ~2000 RPM before the limiter would kick in, which is more consistent with the ratio for reverse being closer to 2nd gear than 1st.

    Here in Holland, we used to have car's from a brand named DAF (they stopped building cars years ago, they only build trucks now). They had variomatic transmissions and the top speed in reverse was the same as the top speed going forwards. They actually raced them on a national level in reverse (with the driver constantly having to look over his shoulder)

    Is it usual for Fords in the US to have over 200hp? I think in Europe they rarely have that much power.

    • @michaellawhead759
      @michaellawhead759 7 лет назад +7

      BlastForward very common. In the us, people love the lower 0-60 times so much that cars get lower fuel economy than their European counterparts. A bone stock work truck nowadays can do 0-60 in about 6 seconds

    • @tmanepic
      @tmanepic 7 лет назад +1

      Michael Lawhead bizarrely, cars sold in the US overall seem to have lower top speeds then in Europe. And our fuel efficiency is unbelievably terrible. We just don't make our cars work for us

    • @michaellawhead759
      @michaellawhead759 7 лет назад +5

      tmanepic most of the time they have an electronic limiter well before the mechanical capabilites of the car itself. Which again doesn't make sense to get all that power out of it just to limit it haha. Cars might sounds fuel efficient, but when you compare them to those smaller diesel powered, manual transmission cars in other countries it makes our cars look bad

    • @zacharygras
      @zacharygras 7 лет назад +3

      Michael Lawhead my f250 has a limiter at 97 but with my tune I deleted the speed limiter and can hit 140 before it stops wanting to go

    • @pauljs75
      @pauljs75 7 лет назад +5

      Let's see... Highway traffic averages at 70 MPH, but less than 100 ft of onramp from the city streets. In European terms that's 100Km/H, but you get less than 40m to get up to that speed. That's why we like to have cars with lots of power, and still have a top speed capability that we can't (legally at least) use.

      But doing so is legal.
      In many countries it is illegal to "reverse more than necessary" and doing it at high speed can also get a "reckless driving" charge.
      Unless you do this on a private road in which case it is legal.

      Correct. If you have the gear ratio information at hand, do the test with the forward gear that's closest in ratio to reverse. Divide the forward ratio by the reverse ratio and multiply that by the top speed in the forward gear. The answer is your top speed in reverse gear

    Hi, thanks for the video. Disregard the negative comments from some viewers. It is true that I don't, and never had driven in reverse at such speed because I just never had to. But it is people like you who make watching youtube entertaining. Cheers.

    As a child I spotted a quite unusual car (in Germany). My father told me that it was a DAF 600 (Netherland) and that it is able to drive in reverse as fast as forward. I just looked it up: it has a CVT transmission.

    I was taught how to drive by my dads old race car driver buddy “ my uncle “ he said you can drive , ( 13 year old south Florida 1985) But you have to in reverse , I learned to drive in reverse for six months before I ever drive fwd. I drove on dirt roads , and did maneuvers until I could do it all perfect ... I’m glad I was part of that generation of kids growing up with crazy uncles ... today I’m the only one in my wolf pack that can drive miles in reverse ( parellel parking offft lol) , I think this should be taught in school, With self parking cars , and camera m we dumbed down the visceral feeling , I enjoy the drive still get excited to drive , and get butterflies , when spirited driving Sunday’s come up.... reverse is so much fun when you feel confident

    I actually had a pursuit that began in reverse probably up to about 40/50 mph. I pulled up in an alley off of Whittier blvd near Willy's Ready Room to back up another Ofcr. on a traffic stop. The suspect was driving a Dodge Charger and I was in an AMC Matador. When the primary Ofcr. reached the driver's door of the Charger the guy took off down the alley and I gave chase backwards for about 50 or 60 yards to the nearest street. I caught the guy several miles later in a dead end street. It turned out he was getting ready to rob the bar and he had previously robbed 18 bars in the L.A. area with a Browning automatic shotgun.

    That's funny, I've wondered this before and decided to try this out. When I started the video I said to myself 40 will probably be the limit, it's kind of like driving in first gear because the gear ratio is typically similar to the first gear.

    My brother and I were feeding the cows on the farm, we pulled a trailer with four round bales of hay on it and when we got it unloaded we found that something happened to the trans. It was a 78 GMC long-wheelbase with a 350 engine, he looked at me and ask how we were going to get back to the house. I told him we'd back it home, reverse still worked but it would not go forward. We backed it out of the field and headed home which was about 8 miles away on a two-lane road getting dark so we needed to hurry. We made it about three miles with no problem and met his wife in another pickup coming to see what was holding us up. My brother decided to follow me with his wife's pickup just for safeties sake, from there it was another five miles to my Dad's house and top speed while making the trip was 60 MPH but we confused a few folks when they were meeting the tail lights instead of the headlights with the caution lights blinking away. We made it safe and sound but decided not to make a habit of driving backwards and besides that my neck still hurts every time I think about it.

    Years ago I went to go visit a friend and his wife and their new baby. I was driving my '72 Camaro and I passed up their house accidentally so I put it in reverse and drove backwards at a high rate of speed...then I lost control of my car and plowed into their neighbors Grand Marquis, caving in the the front and rear passenger side doors. I threw the car in drive, hopped on the expressway, raced home and hid my car in my garage where it stayed for over a week. Then I called and told my friend that I got tied up with something and wasn't going to make it over. He immediately asked if I still had my Camaro because another neighbor saw a car matching my cars description smashing into the Marquis. I told him no, that I sold my Camaro a while back. I never went to his house again. Ever.

    In a manual car the reverge gear ratio is in the middle of 1st and 2nd gear.
    So you can take your max speed in 1st, max speed in 2nd, avg them out and that should be a close estimate.

    Its very interesting that the Odometer increased when you were in reverse. It went from 24163.3 to 24163.4. I remember some old movie showing a guy driving in reverse all the way to his destination to avoid miles. Its no surprise that it doesn't work anymore but i'ts cool that it was caught on camera

    Back when I was younger, I had a 1964 Chevy Corvair and I loved to run the thing fast in reverse. It was a 110HP six cylinder air cooled engine mounted in the back of the car which made the car very stable in reverse. Like you said, the speedometer did not register in reverse, but I would estimate about 35-40 mph. I still miss that car. But I also liked my 305 1976 Camaro and my 1987 305 Camaro. Note: I also had a1981 model Camaro which I think was a 267, but while it was a good car, It underperformed for a V-8. The Corvair was actually an excellent car, especially for a young person at the time, It had good acceleration and handling. I got about 23 mpg when gas was under 30 cents. You had to be careful in tight fast turns because with the engine in the rear it would tend to "over steer". The other problem was with the oil seals. The temp of the aluminum engine would approach 200 degrees so the oil seals became leaky. 40W oil helped. At the service station you could say "fill the oil, check the gas", but it was still a great car that I took across the country from Jacksonville, FL to Los Angeles, CA twice and it drove very well in snow.
