- How does a 20 year old transmission hold up when you force it into reverse AND park WHILE you are driving? Today we find out!! It's been a while since I did these experiments... last time it was in a modern car but this time its the complete opposite ;)

Finally did it in a MANUAL transmission 😂

At 8:01 you know you just trun the car off when it was already on bro 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🔥🔥🔥🔥💯💯💯💯
That's putting damage in your transmission
-Great car family owned
-all highway miles
-oil change every 5000
-transmission is solid
😂😂😂
not anymore
"no lowballers i know what i got"
Then it gets completely destroyed 😂😂😂
Transmission is soiled
It doesn’t kill the ignition and apply the brakes,The car doesn’t have any technology to do that. The brakes you think you’re feelingis the transmission slamming into reverse,Which instantly stalls the engine
John DiMartino wouldn’t this also cause the engine to try to spin backwards? or would the torque converter prevent this?
Remix Island Music I think the pitch on the torque converter blades will probably not have enough force to really spin the engine backwards. It will try and that’s why it dies. But then you also don’t have the transmission pump pumping pressure to hold the clutches on and this is why it goes into neutral. This is all assuming the transmission is strong enough to handle that little jolt he felt when all of this happens.
Pete's Garage exactly that’s why it gives up but why doesn’t the Driving back feed the transmission and start the car???
Cio Dokop because the torque converter housing spins the transmission pump. If the torque converter stops (which it would have to do if it went from spinning forward to then backwards) then there wouldn’t be any pressure in the transmission to apply the clutches. Then all of your car’s momentum wouldn’t “roll start” the car like a manual transmission. A traditional automatic transmission isn’t mechanically coupled to the engine. It needs the pressure to hydraulically couple it to the engine.
Remix Island Music i believe the torque converter prevents it

You should try this in an '82 Chevy Citation (if you can locate one that still runs - somewhat of a challenge itself as they were typically inoperable when new).

I think it's actually engaging into reverse, but since it's hydraulically coupled it just stalls out from trying to counter the engine's rotation from the momentum when it changes. If you try again, do D->N->[full throttle]->R and see what happens. Careful though, could break the tires loose.

Hey Autovlog I think you should find a manual transmission car and do these. Probably better results and more options. Like what happens if you shift from 4th to 1st.
Michael Bacon it’ll either stall the car or send you through the wind shield
If you're going (way) faster than the first gear allows...then the engine *could* blow up
The transmission will just explode
Jose M no it won't.
Modern manual transmissions will not let you shift into reverse or first when moving forward at speed
when you had the fusion i knew it was gonna be safe and not harm the gearbox.

That Chevy prizm is a Toyota corolla
It's actually a Geo, Chevrolet bought Geo and took over their models....they had the Geo Prizm, Geo Metro, etc...but after Chevrolet bought them, they renamed it to Chevrolet Metro, Chevrolet Prizm
+DvdXploitr GEO was part of Chevrolet from the beginning dude...
DvdXploitr geo was a joint venture company between Chevy and Toyota...
It was still a Corolla before a Prism. GM just grabbed the design when they started Geo. Most other Geos are Suzukis.
@@Upster900 Literally a Corolla with different badges, made on the same line pretty often, too. I toss used Prizm parts onto my undying 2000 Corolla VE as often as used Corolla parts- outside of some minor trim and the badging, they're the same, providing you're dealing with the same year. (Year-over-year, they can look the same externally, but have some revisions. This year Prizm/Corolla, for instance, likely has a timing belt, whereas a 2000 model has a chain, even though it's otherwise pretty much the same engine design.) I've even seen a few in salvage yards where a wiseguy former owner has combined the Corolla and Geo/Chevy badges, or the Toyota and Prizm badges, just for giggles.
Contrast that with the later Pontiac Vibe, which is *mostly* a Toyota Matrix, but does actually have some distinct GM components (mostly electrical/electronic) different from it's Toyota sibling.
4:30 sounds like a straight piped v6 for a sec 😂😂
Try while doing 40mph put it in neutral then rev it hard then put it in reverse
bmwrp8 itll just blow the motor... trans prevents it..
Try doing 32.04mph put it in reverse let go of gas. Put it in neutral clap four times but have it got like this: Clap pause pause clap clap pause clap. Then put in park then rev it to 2.302k.
fairy will appear
Snipe Stud00 Bruh, in cars that have rev limiters will still have then in neutral.
zevi 2000 my car only revs to 4k in neutral out of 6.2k rpms
I've tried the reverse thing while going hwy speeds in a 29 year old (1989) Dodge Caravan. This one had the A604 overdrive trans, not the old 3-speed. The TCM simply puts it in neutral till the vehicle comes to a near complete stop, then engages reverse. This technology is nothing new.
The Chevy trans is actually engaging reverse which then stalls out the engine.
"Accidentally" pull the hood latch at 80mph! HAHAHA
Nothing will happen, that’s why you unlatch it again from the outside
Even if there wasnt a latch on the outside, the only thing that would happen is the hood smashing into the windshield.
Its gonna be hard to find a car thatll get 60 mpg😂

Scotty Kilmer has left the chat.
Interesting the engine shuts off when in reverse. My guess is the opposing force of the transmission being in reverse forces the engine to stall?
Nope. The shifting mechanism all controlled by the ECM. It's programmed to override the shifter position switch default routine to another one.
Ibraheem Al hadede just because its controlled by the (TCM) not ecm, doesnt mean the backwards force in the engine isn’t stalling it out.....he’s going forward when the car should be going backwards, counter acting the rotation.
Exactly. You'll need to give it some gas to keep the engine from stalling. Then it should engage reverse and...well, you'll probably lose control of the car.
If it was a safety feature, it would have also turned off the engine when the car was placed in park while moving. Its physics, not a safety feature stalling the engine.
Correct
Drive in reverse and drop into drive then try reverse to park

How many lug nuts does it take to keep the wheels on the car, while driving? 1, 2, 3 ?
It depends on the rim
Nope. You can easily drive with 3. Never heard of someone who lost the lugnuts while changing tyres and then had take one nut from each wheel(assuming thats an car with 4 nuts per wheel) ?
I'm guessing 2 but they have to be diagonally and pretty tight

My dad has a Toyota Land Cruiser HDJ100 with an automatic transmission. The original owner, who we know since way before the car was even produced, once while on the highway put the car on reverse. The transmission made a loud bang and she stopped on the side of the road. After turning the car off and on again it was ready to keep on going... It is now 18 years old and it has no damage whatsoever, shifts gears like it used to when new. This happened over 10 years ago...

The ignition doesn't turn off but rather the engine stalls out. Try putting in neutral, rev the engine and then put it in reverse ;) That will give you some really interesting results but I probably wouldn't go 40 when doing that :D
Good luck killing it. Its a corolla with a 3 speed transmission. I owned one for about 13 years. Nothing broke ever.
Looks to me that the car is burning engine oli though. If he decides not to top up it could eventually break
@@sean71300 yes these cars are notorious for burning oil i own one i usually put in 1-2 quarts of oil a month which isnt too bad despite it having 221,000 miles

I can confirm, my 39 years old 1979 Nissan Sunny B310 (Datsun Sunny in some countries) which is a manual transmission (duh) doesn't let me put to the reverse while I'm driving faster than 4-5 kmph. It's impossible to turn the gear shaft to the reverse position, there's some sorta locking mechanism.
Back in the 70's we were traveling in a station wagon on the Interstate when my brother, sitting in the middle up front, inadvertently bumped the column shifter up into reverse. That car went into reverse and skid to a stop. Dad was driving and he pulled it back into drive and we continued on our way but at our next stop we discovered we lost reverse.
Straight pipe it
Go in reverse and slam it into drive.

In high-school I let my buddy drive my 92 f150. He decided to show me that it'd accelerate faster by starting in low one and then shift manually into 2 and then drive. We were moving pretty good as he was shifting from 2 to drive and went past it into reverse. I remember the noise of the tires chattering and squealing then grinding to this day. Luckily it still drove home. A week later the transmission took a shit on me.....
i know what happens from experience. Accidentally threw my 94 cutlass supreme in reverse instead of neutral and my steering column locked up and i spun out on snowy roads, luckily the car was fine and not damaged at all and nobody was hurt
That thing is fucking bulletproof. It has a 3 speed transmission, btw.
any car would do this, it's not special.
David G Right, but it's still impressive that such an old car is handling being beaten around. The fact that park still works is a miracle.
They had 3 or 4 speed autos in that year. I had a 1990 prism with the 3 speed auto, tranny blew at 80k
Not really, the parking pall is meant to not engage at high speeds and as such just bounces around making that horrible noise until the car slows enough for it to engage. I wouldn't recommend doing it as a regular thing, but it was working as intended.
Just bought a speed 3 lmao

Hey Mike, I know quite a few things about Prism’s of this vintage. You actually have a 3 or 4 speed automatic. The way you can tell is by looking under the gear shift thumb button for a separate button labeled “overdrive”. If you have this, it’s a 4-speed. If not, 3-speed.

I did that once in a car and it blew the internals of the mufflers...sounded like a small explosion. Didn't hurt the engine just the destroyed the mufflers.
I know in a traditional auto, the torque converter will simply disengage and the car will act as if its in neutral. A manual though you would probably be flung forward from the forces of compression braking
Justin Noker see I have 2005 Chevy cobalt and I tried that at 8 mph and when I did that, it felt like someone slammed on the breaks because it stopped the car instantly. That’s why I was curious in a car that’s from a different generation and model at 60mph

🔥💥🤪😁👍
@ 4:00. When you out the car in reverse moving forward, it kicks the torque converter backwards, causing the engine to stall out. Since your not going in reverse, it's forcing the engine to slow down timing and start to spin backwards. That can be VERY bad on your motor. Which may be the reason why it stalls out as a safety feature, otherwise your throttle body is the new exhaust system, and your old exhaust, is the new wide open throttle body.
7:09 sounds like the old man laughing in the Skype call.
Do it on a manual
car first theres a video on here of someone doing it in an old Ford Ranger, they did rev the engine as they dumped the clutch and the rear wheels were spinning backwards a good while.
KABOOM!
@Hector Ortiz no, reverse is like first
Very hard to do and if you do the most likely thing is clutch slip
@Hector Ortiz haha you don't know how your car works then.
All the park setting is, is neutral with a pin that drops down into a slotted gear relatively similar to the way a starter engages with the flywheel. All you're hearing is the pin trying to pop into it's slot but not having enough time.
My '94 Camry (first car I ever owned) even had a neutral safety switch on it, designed for dummies trying to start the engine in gear. The ignition would just do nothing when you tried to turn it. Older cars had more safety features than people credit them for.
That was semi scary let's do it again lol
Put the car up on jack stands and do the same.. (I did it back in the 70's to a car from the mid 60's)
The ignition does not "turn off" automatically as a safety feature. The engine dies because the torque converter acting like a clutch. Selecting reverse while going forward is like trying to start a manual car on a hill without the gas pedal. It's how the PIT maneuver always ends police chases. The car is spun backwards and dies because the torque converter (clutch) is trying to go forward but there isn't any momentum.
there is a piece in your transmission system called parking pawl, the sound you heard was the clicking pawl try to hook up with your transmission gear. Left it like that for a long period of time with cost you a lot of money to replace the system.
Great video Mike!! Here in argentina and lots of South American countries the fusion is also called mondeo. Greetings from argentina!!

Even a 20yo car has a safety override for that. It just stays in overdrive tell you reach a speed slow enough for first gear.
brandon calin Ok expert
Kristiqn Ivanov I am no expert at all. I had an 02 Honda automatic I did it to. So I know from experience.
Parking palls are typically very small pieces of metal that hold the car in Park the car doesn’t apply the brakes in reverse the trans shifting into reverse with a huge load on it and resistance pushing on the engines rotation that is almost trying to spin the engine in the opposite direction so it shuts the car off
“You can rev it while it’s in park” 😂😂 my mans out there havin fun now
6:40
Now this is why I subscribed to the AV channel! Mike are you bringing that hoopty to the next YT call out in Cecil County next year? lol
That’s a lotta damage!!!!
Did this earlier today in my 86’ Chevrolet Celebrity coming back up a slight dip in an attempt to put the trans in overdrive because I was going onto the highway. I’m pretty sure either there is a safety inhibitor but it immediately gave a very slight jerk and turned off the motor but it was only in the reverse gear for not but a second if not less. I then threw it back in drive in a panic but I had no power and just rolled to the side of the road. Realized the engine was off after getting out in a panic getting ready to call a ride but got back in and it started right up and is operating just as was before the accident. Still is doing just fine because I’m thankful.
In 1981 (soph. year high school) I drove a beater 6 cylinder Nova I think it was a 72. I would drive about 40 mph slam on the brakes and lock them up, throw it into reverse and gun it. Made the best long and smoky check mark burnouts....I wish I still had that car!

Not sure why I like there’s type of videos so much more then the AMG vids... (though the beast is a beauty)
I can't help but think of the Jeff Foxworthy joke about the used rental cars. "And let me tell you, it is a cure for constipation!" But, my Grandma's boyfriend did it once, he thought neutral down hills would keep the engine cooler, but went a little too far....
Yes, I got more jokes! Here's an experiment for you. Tell Sydney that "The Bucket" is going to be her first car when she gets her license in a few years, and see how upset she gets, and how long she cries! lol
I disapprove of abusing a Prizm in this way. There aren't enough of them in this world.
That said, I did manage to stall mine years ago panic braking on a rainy day. Some guy changed lanes into me before he was clear of my front end and I floored the brakes avoiding a collision. The drive train went from 60 to 0 in like half a second on the wet pavement, and when I released the brake I found myself without power, just like you observed with your reverse shift here.
Your face is so priceless. When you shift gears that are 20 years old. You need to find a car/ Suv with 200k + on it
Best RUclipsr ever
this is finally coming
Had the predecessor of the Prizm...an 87 Nova. Faithful puppy
That odd clicking noise was the parking stopper . Its a one tooth sort of thing that is pushed into the flywheel gears by a cam when the car is put in park. But when the car is moving the flywheel gears and spinning so it slips and grinds on those gears and eventually smoothes out and you wont get park anymore , just the neutral
Man Toyota’s really are bulletproof
7:13 sounded like the beginning of a movie
The ignition doesn't turn off, it stalls, when you switch it in reverse it reverses the torque converter because you're moving forward while reversing the gears thus reversing the converter halting the motor, motor spinning one way the transmission suddenly the other, what you should have done is got it up to 40mph under load and then switched it into reverse so the motor fights the converter but being such a little motor it probably would have stalled out anyways.
Get it up to max speed in reverse, and slam it into drive. Wonder if the ignition shut off works both ways.
I like how hes talking like hes driving some old 1950s car. There are plenty of cars older then this on the road today.
Yeah man
Get an older car without electronics & try this experiment again. I bet it won't go to well.
twinturbotony93 that’s what this video is. He’s just a dipshit abd doesn’t know what he’s talking about. The engine is stalling from a reverse force, not electronics.
the ignition don't shut off the pressure from the trans just stops the engine from turning. and the parking paw is spring loaded and when it tries to go in because its rounded like a ball on the end it just popes back out until you almost get stopped.
Chris fix has left the building!
7:13 when I fart in my friends car 😂

I had a 89 model ford Mustang that got thrown in park at speed an it locked up the tires as I skidded to a stop.
May have to get an older piece of junk to experiment with
I had a mechanic that used to put customers cars on the lift. He would intentionally put in drive while on the lift & slam it into park & I would hear the exact same sound. I thought it was so fkdc up that he would do this, but he assured me that it was a safety measure & it shouldn't hurt the car.
The ignition turns off because the dinamo is rotating in the reverse direction. This also may kill the battery in seconds, but you can still charge it again as normal.
