Playing Pauper: Mono-Black Land Destruction (Pauper, Magic Online)

- A couple of weeks ago, we had a deck tech for Mono-Black Land Destruction in Pauper, and since there's nothing I enjoy more than making opponents unable to play Magic, we're going to give the deck a shot this week for Playing Pauper! The basic idea of the deck is that we blow up land after land-maybe starting on Turn 1 with the help of Dark Ritual-then draw some extra cards to make sure the land destruction keeps flowing and eventually finish the game with Gurmag Angler or random small creatures like Dusk Legion Zealot. Is blowing up all of the opponent's lands a legitimate plan in Pauper? Let's get to the video and find out!

I hope Playing Pauper continues to be the regular Tuesday night upload. I love seeing this format.
I'm going to try to get it out as often as possible. Probably won't be ever single week, but hopefully close.
I agree, but these decks are so hard to build, there aren’t as many deck options as u wish there would be, there’s still a ton, but u still have a power problem with what cards and what decks are even good enough to compete
@@funnydubby6401 I think you're right about that, and I think that's part of why it's great to watch. Like any of the Modern or Standard decks that Seth plays, few are established tier decks and are often underdog-ish, and seeing those decks being able to stick it to the best decks is a big part of the fun. I think there's a lot of potential in a format like Pauper to see some really off the wall stuff that just might work, at least some of the time.
Dylan Hunter in-line pauper is annoying, but paper pauper is much more fun, our game store had pauper events then everyone lost interest :/
"so lets get into mono black land destruction, now the goal of this deck is to blow up lands" thanks seth
The high quality analysis you tune in for ;)
It's good to have you back Jake.
Of all the videos you make, Playing Pauper always makes me most excited because I know I could buy and play the deck immediately if I wanted to! I wish there was more magic that was this cool and accessible. If only delver wasn't such a dominant deck...
"How do you keep six lands with Burn?" I think you might want to consider doing that if you play against, oh, I don't know, a land destruction deck?
OMG, thank you for doing this deck!!! I wanted to see this so badly and when my alert came up that you had posted it, my black heart sang. Thanks for being aaaaaaaaamazing!
First line of the ad before the video, " We sincerely apologize ".
So fitting for LD.
That's perfect.
I know you are propbably in different time zone, but every time I try to go to sleep I am greeted with a notificatipn that MTG goldfish has uploaded.
Connor MacLeod same, kinda annoying.
I assume you're on the east coast, where Seth also is, because he always uploads really late
29:00 That opponent to draws were insane. Kept 6 lands and drew nothing but action.
You're right, but I think opponent made the right choice on the keep. That deck runs 18-20 lands depending on the build, having 6 in your opener means you should draw mostly action, and it blanks the main purpose of the opponents deck in this match.
I went on a playing pauper marathon earlier this week so this was well received.
At 17:43, you have lethal. Play Swamp, activate Pestilence 3 times to kill the Augur, attack with Thorn, then activate Pestilence 2 more times.
What I came to the comments for
Awesome video Seth! I think I always enjoy pauper videos because I feel like I always learn about some new older cards in this format, and if the deck seems cool enough, I can build it myself for super cheap and use it for casual play!
Glad you liked it!
MOAR PAUPER PLS this is dope :) I just built this deck a few days ago!
Opponent: *Plays Land*
Seth: "Really Opponent????"
I'd be interested in seeing you play some of the tiered pauper decks like Delver, Boros, Elves, or Affinity.
Gracias Seth & crew, for making the platform clear in the title :)
No problem!
I didn't check the channel when I clicked, and thought this was PleasantKenobi just based on seeing "Mono-Black Land Destruction." :P
I think i would drop the Read the bones before Dusk Legion Zealot when sideboarding.
Doing the Magic God's work, SPBKASO.
Cool deck. I’ve run something similar. Few comments: I’ve seen people tempted to cut .5 lands for every dark ritual but the problem is that when you don’t draw dark rituals you’re not running enough lands. Peat Bog and Barren Moor are traps. You need lands that don’t come into play tapped. I’d also run 22-23 lands, probably all swamps but maybe a couple radiant fountains. You also take too much damage from your lands so I would go down on the draw spells that cost life. I’d also drop Befoul, too expensive. Would probably go up on some 1 and 2 cc spells that are relevant, eg. main deck duress isn’t too bad and a small smattering of removal.
Can confirm from testing that this deck folds to elves.
I really love the white border duress. You should use all white border for Playing Pauper. Would really warm my heart.
I feel like this is just how Pauper is. There's a bunch of different decks people COULD play, but really you just run into Delver, Stompy, Burn, or Bogles. Pauper SHOULD be a fun diverse format but there's some seriously strong archetpyes that just overpower everything with all the best cards which makes diversity unplayable.
No, you run into delver, burn, delver, bogles, delver, burn again and sometimes delver...
Delver needs a ban or 2.
why there is so much hate for every popular deck, like delver now or WR kuldotha before. That's so annoying
@@Kivuhl its because constantly seeing it can be boring. And people constantly see it because its powerful/reliable
@mattador_actual Yea but most people just play delver and burn...
Ah perfect. Right when I was about to go to sleep
I know right
was there a line in the last game instead of playing thorn u play the peat bog as land for turn and attempt to flashback chainers edict
I might be missing something regarding the Pauper format because I don't play it often but wouldn't Sinkhole be a better land destruction card?
still gonna build it, looks awesome
It's sweet, I think we mostly hit bad matchups.
luvv it!♥ is there a 2022 list?
Would it be better to keep the extra LD instead of edicts vs burn?
Now if you played my LiquiSplinter deck, this would NOT have happened Seth. It isn't a matchup dependent deck... It can go against anything and have just as good of a chance as any top deck. Someday you may actually put it in the pool for everyone to vote on. 😊
Seth destroyed more of his lands than his opponents in that second burn game 😂
I play paper pauper, is Chainers Edict legal there? As far as i read it has only been available as a common online
Paper counts the online card pool list so it is in fact legal in paper as well. Ironically, however, it would seem that MTGO does not count things exclusively printed as common in paper so you can get some weird edge cases. Magic is weird.
*Edited for clarity.
Just to iterate the previous comment: MTGO is the standard for pauper legality. (Some LGSs may have house rules, but typically just go by miso). Thus chainers edict is legal in paper, but sinkhole is not. Hope this helps!
Pauper is weird, it only cares about Magic Online, so Chainer's Edict (and also Battle Screech) are legal thanks to Vintage Masters putting them at common.
Though not hard destruction, what about including Contaminated ground? It's sort of like a black spreading seas. Against non-black decks it is basically destruction, and they'l loose life each time they use it until they play enough lands to not use it.
This decks seems fun, but I wish we had been able to see it in different match-ups.
noiiiiceee more pauperrrrr
I feel like cutting 1 Angler for a Sultai Scavenger might not be horrible idea? I dunno. Flyers are SUPER prevelamt in Pauper with Delver being the dominant deck.
Sultai Scavenger is pretty bad tho. Dies to bolt, trades with Delver for your entire yard. Gurmag just tends to be much harder to deal with
Elves are better than delver
@@daltonwakeup1747 Not really? Electricky and GG
Seth:
You think you could do something where you take old footage and do a comentary as the opponent. IDK how you would know what is in their hand, but I would like to see you feel some of the pain that opponents feel.
1st game 1st match you said you could pay for Daze. That's true but the Daze returns the land to the hand so you'd be paying for your spell to fizzle
Why run Sign in Blood over Night's Whisper? Isn't the latter strictly better, in case you get stuck with one swamp and Radiant Fountain?
You can make the opponent draw with Sign in Blood, causing them to lose 2 life. Sometimes it finishes out the game.
This deck is only playing 21 lands, which seems strange for a deck that plays 4 lands that only have two uses, and really wants mana....maybe the rituals make it okay but perhaps another land or two wouldn't go amiss?
I think a better version of this deck also runs Night's Whisper and Cabal Ritual and is just all in on blowing up lands as early as possible and mulligans aggressively to do so.
Sounds sweet, do you have a list?
Love the Jank.
56:12 That is a clear spot to play Thorn of the Black Rose. You do realize it can block and therefore keep the Monarch since opponent only had 1 creature with power? Yes you probably lose to Rancor but it is not like you do not need to get lucky in that matchup.
do you think it would be good to add a land or two?
Maybe. We did have land problems in some games, might be worth going to 22.
Did you pretty much only run into burn and delver in matches?? :/
didnt the professor make a vid of this some time ago?
3:32
Thorn has Deathtouch
Play a land destruction deck and get Mana screwed in the early game. Sounds like magic
Seth don`t you dare talk about banning Gush. Too me Gush is what makes Pauper different from each other format
Kind of like how Brainstorm is in Legacy
And how Modern used to be the Lightning Bolt and Tharmogoyf format
I won`t deny how absurdly strong Gush is. But i don`t think it should get banned in Pauper if Foil becomes absurd in Pauper please just ban it over Gush
Interesting. I guess we'll see what happens starting today when UMA becomes legal!
this comment didn't age well
Thx for trying....play Boros bully by deluxicoff if you can or if you are really good at clicking, play familiars...
Why no sinkhole?
Did you mean: no fun allowed
Jk I love this
I don't know why cartouche isn't in the main (at least a 1 of) it seems useful in almost every match
Especially against Burn, we seems unwinnable in game one.
No contaminated ground?¿
I built this same deck 4 years ago
pauper shows you how to make the most out of common cards!
Seth the Peat Bogs are fine. Keeping 1-landers against burn is just bad
Pauper? Ponza? Seth (pbkaso)? YES PLEASE!
SAME, AMAZING!!!!
" we can even pay through daze" Sure... But that land is no longer going to be in play xD
Yeah :(
Sinkhole is a Common. Its expensive but... a common.
Burn players somehow seem to always "flood" when they need to...
3rd opponent had Daze for days...
Is it just me or would you like to play magic with Seth forever ? Lol.
Isn't sinkhole a common?
Pauper is weird. Stinkhole is a common in paper, but not on Magic Online, so it's not legal in Pauper.
Pestilence is too good not to play mainboard.
Wasn’t sinkhole a common? I’m not too familiar with pauper but it seems like sinkhole is a must in this deck.
More pauper!
*opponent plays an Island*
Well, we have an answer for that, and we can even pay for Daze.
Daze would pick up the land, so why would you pay? You are a silly man.
sinkhole is a common
Unfortunately the Pauper format only checks MTGO rarities, which Sinkhole was only ever done at rare.
Is sinkhole not available for this deck?
I really don't like the look of this deck. It seems like it doesn't have a lot of spectacular matchups and does have a lot of horrible ones. The matchups in the video don't do it any favors, but a lot of Pauper decks can do powerful things for one mana which makes spending a ton of your own resources to destroy your opponent's lands pretty unappealing. Traditional mono-black control or Pestilence seem at least as good at leveraging Gurmag Angler and Thorn of the Black Rose, have more great matchups, are a lot more consistent, and can still side in a bunch of land destruction if you want it to.
I'm all for innovation, this is a weird archetype that I don't see very much which is cool, but I don't know about this build.
More pauper content though please! Even if something doesn't work it's still nice to see Pauper experimentation.
LD mmmmm it’s fun
Fun
legacy bonis rond storm
Man, you should have played till the end in game 2. It wasn't certain death.
Professor Oak it was, he had a fireblast in his hand, so it was 3 damage from searing blaze and another 4 from fireblast
More pauper
Also I think this land count is kinda low.
Yeah, going up a land or two might be worthwhile.
on 27:21 you should have gone tendrils on your creature
Why don’t you use sinkhole?
It's not legal
Its not released at common on mtgo, and the system won't let it transfer over
20:00
Why the hell didn't he use the dark ritual to play more spells earlier?
He could have played a chainers edict.
And at 39:00 he just lets the enemy block instead of playing chainers edict to get rid of his creature before attacking. Yeah, the enemy might play a counterspell, but he even has another edict left. What the hell is this guy with the annoying voice even doing? The enemy came through with 2 gurmag anglers later, but he didn't know that, and he could have ended the game earlier in the most cases.
Anyone here in 2023
Deck need chittering rats. Zealot is bad
Sinkhole?
Banned
Why do you talk like that?
Nobody talks like that.
