How to Cut a Foam Mattress | Vanlife Bed

- Cutting a mattress is a common task in a van build, especially for minivan campers. In this quick video, I show you how to quickly and easily cut a mattress to any size/shape.
You will need either a serrated bread knife or an electric carving knife (easily found at thrift stores) and a Sharpie. A tape measure and straight edge are needed if you are making a straight cut (instead of a curved cut like I show in the video). And, if you want to stitch the inner cover (if your mattress has one), you'll also need a needle and thread.
I filmed this video in three takes over three years, I hope it's helpful!
Here at TheGalavan I feature vans, primarily designed and built by women, to give you inspiration for your own van build. I’m always on the lookout for other van life enthusiasts who want to collaborate and share their love of this lifestyle. I also love to cook from scratch in my van and share accessories, tips, and tricks to make van life easier and more successful for you.

That was the only video I've ever seen that shows you the entire process. Thank you. 😊
That was great Joni! You handle things well.
Great tip! Thank you Joanie.
Helpful!
Very helpful, I ordered my mattress from this foam mattress shop Foam Global will also need to do some cutting. I was going to buy a an electric bread knife to cut, but it looks very easy to cut. Thanks 👍
Glad it was helpful! I think you can get a smoother cut with an electric carving knife. And they are usually pretty easy to find at thrift stores! But I find it easy enough to cut with my bread knife, and having the cut a little jagged doesn't really negatively effect the mattress.
Good luck with yours!
thank you, so much. -C
Thanks for this! I have two 2" foam mattress from home depot and they fit perfectly but they take up a lot of room when mobile.. want to be able to take apart the bed when driving etc! Thanks
Any suggestions on how to pick the foam and thickness? Love your videos!
I would suggest going to mattress stores to try out the different types and thicknesses to see what works for you.
👍🏻❤️
can you not cut the outer cover, too?
What if we have a gel mattress which is too thick? Is there a place I could take it to get it sliced thinner? We have a 12" but would prefer 8"
You'd need to check Google for that. You might be better off getting an 8" mattress than trying to cut your 12" down.
Step 0, Make sure the mattress doesn’t have fiberglass.
Is fiberglass common in foam mattresses?
@@TheGalavan Yes. Due to federal regulations about fire retardants many of them have a layer of knitted fiberglass. You'll see a tag warning the customer to not remove the cover. It's particularly common in twin size mattresses since they are assumed to be used by children.
