Great informative video for those wanting to start their sourdough journey. Mine is almost five years old. Use it for breads, pizza crusts, cakes, muffins, etc. Great flavor. The biggest take away is not to stress about it and keep it simple. Too many websites try to make it difficult. Which it isn’t. Thank you! ❤
Thank you so much for showing us how to make our own starter! I love sourdough bread, but the store bought kind has so many ingredients in them. I have wanted to learn to make my own bread, but have always felt intimidated to make my own starter for it. Thank you so Julianne, for teaching this 52 year old how to keep it simple!
Thank you so much for all your information. I love the way your dad is asking questions that we would normally ask that are not normally answered another video, so I really appreciate you guys. God bless.

Thank you Josh and Julianne. I've wanted to make a sourdough starter for years and after reading all the different rules on how to make it "by the book" I would get discouraged and not try. I'm going to start mine today using your recipe and advice. Wish me luck! Praise Yah!♥
Great video! I tried starting sourdough last year and failed every time. The step by step and what to expect and look for to know it’s good, was exactly what I needed. Thanks guys!
Thank you so much for the reminder to keep it simple. I didn't know that I could let my sourdough go for longer periods of time in the fridge. I think I was afraid I let it to too long and threw mine out. I'm excited to start back again THIS WEEKEND because of your help, Julianne. Thanks, sister!!!
I just received my starter from you yesterday, and I absolutely cannot wait to start baking with it!! You guys are all seriously the best and my absolute favorite RUclips channel. Keep being awesome guys!!
Thank you for the awesome video! I have been nervous to start sourdough. I have watched so many videos about it and I always chicken out. I am going to try it now. Thank you Josh for asking the questions and clarifying that is do helpful and needed for me to understand more! Amazing family!!!
THANK YOU! I've been wanting to get into making sourdough but I was SO overwhelmed with how to start and what to do when I actually wanted to bake with it. you've made it easy to understand and now I don't feel as nervous.
I like the small start, add daily all part, instead of the 'discard by half daily' narrative most give. I'd still use the discard portion to make a flat bread (tortillas?) with. Great vid! Thanks!
Thank you Julianne for sharing what you’ve learned, I wish you would have had more time to talk, you were the one that brought the value to your video. ❤
Thank you for your support! I (Julianne) actually appreciate my father and mother helping me gain confidence and bring me peace in creating content. I am naturally an introvert and initially did not want to be part of creating any content. However, as I have grown and they have gently supported me, I have become more comfortable making the content that many enjoy. Hopefully this helps in clarifying any questions or concerns. Blessings!
Has anyone tried this? I’m on day 6 I believe and wondering if it’s looking “normal” or not… this is my first time trying to make a starter and I chose this video as my how-to guide due to how simple you made this for me!
I've been wanting to get "Herman" (what we called the Sour dough starter in the 80's) started for years and didn't know how until Now 😃 THANK YOU so much for sharing this with us 🙂
Have been reluctant to try starting sourdough, but you have made it so simple that I will definitely make some. Thanks so much for such an informative video. Excited for more ideas for using sourdough.
Really like this information…. Understand very well, this one…. And like it better because she said is pioneer way…💯….. uncover for the start really looks good this way…. I can’t wait to make it…. She explained so perfect….🏆
I appreciate your presentation on Sourdough! I have not yet tried to make it, but have been looking into it. Hopefully very soon, my kitchen will smell amazing (like yours!)!

Thank you for sharing this video on sourdough starter. Every starter I have had has failed and now I know why. I was feeding it way to much and to often. Have a blessed week.
Cook with a KISS! - Keep It Simple Stupid! Well, this just makes sense. Especially since I've been fermenting other things for a couple of years now. This method is basically the same as any other ferment. Brain click! Or light bulb moment! Thank you, seriously thank you! I've been wanting to try sourdough for a while now but have kept busy with other things. I can remember my grandma dumping this and that into a bowl and mixing and kneading and suddenly we have bread out of the oven. I didn't inherit that ability. Making bread has been my nemesis for years! But I'm not giving up! Honestly, I really want sourdough to try everything but bread. Sneak extra goodness in on my family!
I've been struggling to understand the right way to start a starter and that has been stopping me from baking sourdough, thankyou so much for this tutorial! This one has been the easiest by far and I'm hoping it works out for me!❤
Wonderful presentation! My boys don’t like sourdough, so I dried some and it’s on the shelf in a jar. I think I’ll take Julianne’s advice and pour some of the hooch off when I reconstitute it so it’s not as sour!
Just started this. On day one using unbleached pizza flour. We'll see how it goes. Thanks for the video 👍. The first time I did this was was a few years ago. I had hooch and bubbles using king Arthur's flour but I don't think I was patient enough. This is my second go around.
Good video you two! I usually feed mine just before I use it for bread to bulk it up and get it super active. 1 tsp of soda will help lessen the sour flavor if it is too strong. Julianne, with the discard I would suggest the sourdough fudge brownies and peanut butter cookies...so good. I have also added whole wheat to the sourdough starter and water for making the bread - I just did not use 100% whole wheat but rather about 60/40.
Thanks for your easy care approach. I had someone try to teach me their strict by weight and regular feedings but I failed because I'm not cooking for a family any more. Sometimes I'd only want to use a starter once a month depending on the season, so I'm trying again.
@@HeartwayFarmsneed some guidance! why does mine keep getting runny on day 3 or 4. Day 2 it’s soo bubbly and makes the sourdough noise then day 3 on it just gets runnier and runnier. I’m on my second try and it’s doing it again 🥲
Thank you so much for doing a new starter video. I am one of those nervous ones...didn't want to "stink up" my home. I will start it tonight and looking forward to seeing how it turns out. Do you ever have to move it to a new container after any length of time? Does the jar get "funky"? hugs and blessings to you all. Stay warm!
Hi Kathy! If the sourdough starts to build up on the sides of the jar, I'll either wash the jar or move the starter into a new jar. The bacteria and yeast in the sourdough starter will actually inhibit the growth of mold and bad bacteria.

When adding the flour and water or feeding the sourdough do you stir the new flour and water into the active sourdough?
Yes... Just mix it in gently by hand and keep it simple, fun, and enjoyable ☺️
Does the room temperature have to be warm when it’s resting on the bench top?

White flour rye flour wheat flour and intermix
If u want to change to white just keep feeding with white flour
