I add a few pieces of crushed ice to my Dutch oven, under the parchment, when I put the bread in and it gets a crusty skin without having to remove the lid and baking extra time. It just saves that one step.

Hello Heartway Farms! I just have to say I made this recipe for Thanksgiving and Christmas 4 loaves at a time! Went out and bought 2 small lodge dutch ovens at Wal-Mart, very inexpensive, had 4 bowls lined up on my counter with the ingredients mixed up all at once, covered them, let them rise, heated the 2 dutch ovens together in my oven, they fit perfectly in my oven, baked the first loaves. As soon as I lifted them out of the pots I put the second batch of loaves in. This recipe is AMAZING!!!! NEVER FAILS! IS DELICIOUS! And everyone wants the recipe! So tasty and chewy! I always use king arthur bread flour!!

Thank you, thank you! Sometimes I just want a crusty artisan style bread to go with a pot of soup, but soft breads won't do, or sourdough will just take too long.
I made this with bread flour and regular yeast (just woke the yeast with the honey and water early). Was worried those changes might ruin the bread somehow, but it was perfection. Absolutely wonderful and so simple! This is sure to be a regular part of our family dinners from here on!

What a great video. Every step was so well explained. I'm new to bread making and have been watching a ton of videos in the past twoweeks. What strikes me is the huge difference in rising times which range from zero to 24 hours. Most of the time people claim the dough has doubled in size. Can anyone explain to me the difference a longer rising time would make? What if I let the dough in this recipe rise for 12 hours? Just curious 😄

    • @HeartwayFarms

We find that this particular loaf of bread performs best with a 3-hour rise time. You can let it rise overnight however it does not bake as beautifully :-)

I had a similar recipe but it just didn't seem to have enough salt and I love the addition of honey. It's on my counter rising right now. Also, could you do a video on your black bean recipe PLEASE 😊.

wow these look amazing! I've been making a similar recipe (same ingredients minus the honey) and only 1 tsp of salt and 1/2 tsp of yeast. They always come out amazing as well.
But now I really want to try the honey, and the amount of salt and yeast in your recipe. I also didn't know about the separating of the salt and yeast. Very cool.
In my recipe, the dough also rests 8-12 hrs, but would love to try 3+.
I have been folding in the corners in the "no-kneading' phase to make the ball, and I also score it right before cooking it. But looks like I don't even need to do these two steps.
Your loaves looked like they had a natural score when they came out of the oven. WOW!
I've also very lightly oiled the dutch oven after preheating, but I will try the parchment instead.
So excited to try this recipe .... thank you so much!!! and yeah, mom's know best. 😀
