- When most people talk about racing games on the Saturn, Sega's own efforts are usually the focus. Here, I wanted to go over some of the other stuff available on the system.
This is part of the videos from the first run of my channel. They have technical and editing issues that I am not going back to fix. They are presented as they are.

I just played Daytona USA and the feeling you get from that game is awesome. With all the graphically superior games of today it can’t take away that feeling of a great nostalgic fun game of that time. I play my Saturn all the time and there is something very different about playing it compared to new games. I miss that time.
I play the 360 version sometimes but at one point I dedicated myself to getting a top 100 time on XBL on the Advanced course. It took a lot of practice but I did, last time I checked my time was bumped out of the top 100 but still top 120.

The Saturn is what made me a fan of racing games.
Me too, my Saturn came with Sega Rally and it's was love at first sight, both for Sega Rally and racing games.

The pal version of F-1 Challenge does have in-game music by the way. And it totally rocks! Really amazing and fun game, especially when played with the Arcade Racer wheel.
Yeah the music is really decent in the PAL version. It's probably my favourite racing game on the Saturn although I'm a bit biased because it's an F1 game :-P
I had no idea Street Racer had exclusive graphical features on the Saturn. Will have to track it down, thanks.
One of the best Sega Saturn racing game "Syutokou Battle '97" should be included.
This series called Tokyo Xtreme Racer in western.
Saturn version has not port to US, but you should try the Japanese version.
This game is the most similar game to Ridge Racer in Saturn.

@@SpiralPegasus Sorry to say that, Sega Saturn don't get so much great racing game. Manx TT, Sega Rally, Daytona CC and this Syutokou Batter 97 are the only good Racing game in SS.

There are too many good games in Saturn.
I try to introduce some games that are not launched in North America.
RPG: Shining Force 3 scenario 1-3. It is a MUST play. Perfect story presentation.
RPG: Devil Summoner Soul Hackers
RPG: Tengai Makyou Daiyon no Mokushiroku
RPG: Mystaria The Realms of Lore (Blazing Heroes). Although it is launched in NA, it is underrated. It got sequel named Riglord Saga 2 which is Japan exclusive.
3D Shooting: Kidou Senshi Gundam Gaiden 1-3, the best 3D Robotic Action & Shooting game in that generation.
2D Shooting: Macross Ai Oboete Imasu ka. It is a good shooting game from Animation.
2D Shooting: Sengoku Blade
2D Shooting: Sol Divide
Action: Tenchi wo Kurau II: Sekiheki no Tatakai
Action: Kidou Senshi Gundam, Z Gundam 1 & 2. It is similar style as Macross.
Adventure: Deep Fear, which is launched in Europe and Japan only.

I loved High Velocity: Mountain Racing Challenge back in the day. Another forgotten racer on the Saturn is Scorcher. It's a futuristic racer where you ride on these Motorcycle type things. It has some of the best graphics on the Saturn. It might have a steep learning curve but it's pretty fun to play.

I really enjoyed Impact Racing, which plays out like Spy Hunter or Roadblasters for the 32-bit era. The roads could be a little wider but I don't mind. The trick to success lies in winning the weapon upgrades on the bonus stages. Otherwise, you'll struggle after the first couple stages. The speed is fast and smooth and I was pleasantly surprised. It should have been released on Dreamcast.
Street Racer is a great showcase for Saturn's 2D powers and plays a good game if you don't think about Mario Kart. The cars are too fat and the weapons are useless, but, again, Mario Kart. It has a lot of charm and could be fun for parties.

With the rise of popularity now, (former Saturn and DC owners looking to recapture their childhood) you should do a 2023 best BUDGET games to get for the Saturn and Dreamcast! It would be such a damn helpful video for all of us who are already purchasing the hardware. Gotta have games to go with it and they ain't cheap! Much love. ❤️🐨❤️
I’m glad you covered Initial D; I’ve had it on my eBay watch list for a few weeks but I was hesitant to pull the trigger due to a lack of reviews.
One racer I did notice missing from this video is Choro Q Park. Apparently the Japanese menus are a pain in the butt to navigate but it looks like a fun little racer once it gets going.
I got into Choro Q3 lately after not having played any of the series before. It's really good. The handling model is weird but addictive. The menus didn't give me too much trouble other than not understanding I hadn't my upgrades equipped for the first few races.

Impact Racing is one of my favorites; though I agree with all your criticisms, I just find it really fun and it looks pretty decent. I definitely recommend it.

Impact racing was one of the few games made in Ireland! They also made speed freaks on the PS1
I became interested in initial D after buying the PS3 version; however, I didn’t know about the Saturn edition-I’ll be buying it now.
I still remember my PS2 Slim not being able to play Initial D.
I get backwards compatibility issues, but not being able to play games from it's own library really bummed me out and put me off from the PS2 for a long time.
The game itself is amazing if you have a phat model PS2 though, highly recommend if you love arcade racers.

I have never played Initial D on the Saturn, but if you are familiar with the anime, you know all the races are at night on mountain passes that are dark and that even plays into some of the storyline on certain battles. Also the drifting is what the main character in the anime was great at. The video you showed of the game actually looks nice for the Saturn. I have played the PS2 version of Initial D and the arcade and the formula never really changes. If you are a fan of the anime, you will love the game and its learning curve. If you aren't a fan or don't know about the anime I could see how this game would drive you crazy especially if you don't speak Japanese.

King the spirits plays fine with Saturn racing wheel. It's definitely harder using normal controller.
Neat, don't remember seeing that go kart game
High Velocity is my favorite racing game on the Saturn currently. It can be tough to master, but can be a lot of fun once you get the drifting down. My only gripe is the manual changing of songs to hear the full soundtrack, instead of it just cycling through them all. My favorite racing games of the day will always be the N64 ones, but there are a few good ones on Saturn too.
I was a big fan of Mario Kart 64 and the Midway racers on the N64. They were good fun.
High Velocity is my favorite racing game on the Saturn, as well!
Part 1 or 2 is better?
Try King the Spirits 2. The Japanese only sequel. It's a much improved experience with a lot more cars and different weather conditions.
I have nearly all of the these titles and i agree with you on most of your opinions but i actually really enjoy playing GT24, it looks pretty good, i like the Ridge Racer "day to night effect, it handles well & its quite challenging, i personally would have liked a PAL release of the game!

The European version of F-1 Live Information aka F1 Challenge does have a soundtrack composed by Richard Jacques
I've had a loose copy of Dead Heat for years, but never even played it! I hope there's a sound test option to rock out to.
That F1 game looks great! Wish they did a full track version, instead of the 3 real and 3 fantasy ones. The other ones look really subpar compared to the PlayStation selection :(

I went on EBay to purchase the Andretti Racing. But, I don’t see a version for the Japanese Sega Saturn 🪐
Hi SLX. Try to Drift in Initial D! I played through the whole game and did enjoy it. (But fort i had to master the strange drift mechanics in this game)
I used to like Gt 24.
On a PAL PSX,all imports from USA and Japan were running at 60hz fullscreen and we were always hunting for them.
On a PAL Saturn,Japanese import games would run at 50hz with black borders instead of 60 which was annoying.

I had the mountain climbing one. Always wished I had a steering wheel or analog joystick for that one. The regular controller didn't do it justice for me so I rarely played it. Impact Racing was ok. Both not nearly as good as the Sega Racers.

Formula Karts still plays well in my opinion. Played a ton of it on PC and had no idea it had a Saturn release.
So with Initial D, when you enter a turn, tap the drift button and let go of steering and gas, then once you begin drifting the steer out of it feathering the gas. It's very rewarding once you get the hang of it, may even be my favorite racing game on the Saturn. When you get going well the gameplay looks a lot like Ridge Racer. It plays nothing like it obviously, but tit looks like it.
Yes, F-1 Challenge is really good and quite cheap. But there are musics in this game ! Except they are not present in the Japanese version.

Just another shout out for F1 Challenge. The in game music makes the Western release far superior to the JPN version. HangOn 96 is superior to 95 too due to the drift option not present in 95.
I can't believe you ommited Shutokou Battle 97, it's one of the best, Japan exclusive. Unless you mentioned it on another video.

F1 Challenge: what do you mean theres no decent in game race music? None other than Richard Jacques did all the menu and in game race tunes for this and it is some of his best and for me what makes this game stand out!
F1 Live Information in Japan didn't have race music.
I remember initial d from the arcades, and yeah I never got it either!
The Arcade game is totally different from the one on the Saturn. It's also one of the best Arcade racing games. The only one better is Maximum Tune.
@@erikw792, I just watched a video of all the Initial D games, including the arcades, and realized that it's a totally different game that I'm thinking of. It's probably because the clip he showed reminded me of this other game, but now I have no idea as to what it was!

I use to have Highway 2000, solid game but it got stale after awhile.
A couple of comments concerning the Japanese games.
Initial D requires using the brake and gas at the same time to take most corners. Others you just let off the gas. To unlock the other cars besides the 86 Trueno, you must beat story mode. I have done it but it took a lot of tries to beat Bunta. It is not a very good game though. Instead I suggest King the Spirits 2. It is the best togue racing game for the system and my favorite racer on the Saturn.
Zero 4 Champ racing mode is not hard. Make sure your car is setup right and don't let off the gas while shifting. That is as long as the weather is dry. Other weather conditions require different techniques. The cars are definitely not equal either. I got stuck at the RPG battle after Las Vegas in Doozy J's story mode due in large part to the language barrier. If you do decide to try the story mode the girlfriend you pick determines the starting car. I suggest the 300zx or MR2. I suggest playing the Super Famicom Zero 4 games in the series. RR and RR-Z. I was able to complete the story modes for those even though I don't know Japanese. It is one of my favorite racing series.
SLX, do you ever use the manual transmission option in any racing games?
Not for captures. My work area is very small and I use a simple controller to get footage. When I play for myself, I have much more space and a racing wheel for my favorite racing games. I'll use manual in some of those cases, especially if time is a major factor in the game itself.

I wish Sega would make a Saturn-mini. Or at least release a Saturn collection disc for ps4 and switch.
Lots of Saturn fans have wanted those things for years. Sega really needs to do something about it.
its the same deal with the dreamcast, they never bothered to release a collection disc, instead they keep re-releasing the megadrive collection... i think i have it on ps2, ps3 and refused to buy the ps4 version.

I can't believe that Fornite has the Ferrari license and Outrun does not. WTF.
I always thought the Saturn was interesting, I never owned one, the more I learned about the hardware the more I would have liked to know how hard it could have been pushed. But it seems when I watch videos like this, it wasn't worth owning as a main console, compared to PS1 or N64, it just doesn't have enough great games, it has some.
How hard would it have been to throw in some music on those titles...they were on cd for Christ's the sake!
I actually like the music off on many racing games, especially if they lean more to the simulation side but you're right, they should have least given you the choice!
So, yeah, i'm one of those few who actually beat this Initial D game for Saturn. It is a great experience if you're a fan of the series, but not as good as more recent efforts, specially the PS2 and PSP games developed by Sega Rosso, who actually took a lot of inspirations on this game (which was made by Genki, who made Tokyo Xtreme Racers and a lot of other racing games for Sega)
This game focus more on drifting, but it's supposedly to be unrealistic, since it's based on a manga, that by the time, didn't even have an anime adaptation, which became famous by its eurobeat songs, so this game lacks an interesting soundtrack. Fortunally, there's a iso on the internet that put all eurobeat songs from the anime into the game, making it 200% better, believe me.
As for the controls, you just have to cope with it's problems. Your chances of winning are based on how well you pass through the curves/hairpins without hitting walls and you do that by slightly braking just before them and carefully steering until you hit the straight part of the road.
It's a fun game overall, specially when you get the hang of it.

F1 Live Information is the version I had. This Japanese version is different from the US localized release.
What about Need For Speed?
i played nascar 98 collectors edition on playstation all the time. loved the paintball cheat and going the wrong way shooting cars with it
I would never want an F1 game with BG Music.
F1 RACING IS GEM ON Arcade Racing , Side so grip and responsive too 9 out 10 and art is reasonable but song track messing was just odd.

Could the saturn have run ridge racer? ?
In the beginning, no. It would have just butchered the port the same way Daytona was. Had Namco been a Saturn 3rd party and had access to Sega's internal libraries around Sega Rally time, then yes, I believe it could have done Ridge Racer well. There are a few games on the Saturn that look very similar to Ridge Racer with solid frame rates as it stands. Wangan Dead Heat springs to mind.
I agree, as someone who is a big fan of the Ridge Racer series and Sega's multitude of arcade racers, i would say Ridge Racer is not spectacular as far as graphics go, they are pretty basic for the most part, it suffers quite a bit from polygon tearing (as many ps1 titles do) its actually fairly jerky also so i think in Namco's or Sega's hands we would see a version at least as good as the ps1 version.
When SEGA themselves actually programmed for it, the Saturn had superior 3D graphics to the PS1, although most gamers do not realise this.

With help from Sega I don't see why not. The original Ridge Racer looks nice on PS1 because of the great draw distance and solid framerate. I'd imagine a Saturn port would just have the draw distance turned down.
Namco apparently tried a port of RR to 3DO, but the framerate barely broke 10. So if then3DO can at least get RR running the Saturn sure as hell could.
Damn racing developers hand you the aux cable to play your own music and they get dinged for it. Shameful, real racers always muted the music and played their own in the background

very interesting racing game,some of them i play,some is interesting,but some was stupid and very bad,Andretti Racing i play just a little,i hope you like American really proud what he's been former F1 champion and what he was born in Montona,from other racing game is interesting 2 carting games,Japanese racing game on a sea,and some drift racing games
On the drag racing game, you were launching in 2nd Gear... Of course the opponent will beat you. Looks like an awful game but just pointing this out just in case you get a car that be drag raced in real life. :)
You need have one ore other how handle intalD 1998 lean where to brake and get on throttle use handbrake too but, Japanese study and studying fellow gaming.

Kinda hard to enjoy the drifting when it sends you off the road every time. I just can't get the feel for it.
Initial D on the Saturn is not like the later Arcade games. I've beaten it and I can say it's a garbage 4/10 game. You have to beat it to even drive any other car besides the 86.
GT 24 was a bad port in all fronts, bad fps, visuals, sound and the remove of the cockpit view, It really sucks.
