I share your love to the original Daytona, it looked rough even back then, but it felt like having the arcade at home in some way, the gameplay was perfect, not to mention the soundtrack, and we were living in a time when no one expected a home port to look exactly like the arcade.

@Alvaro Rodriguez. True. Redraw, pop-up and clipping were hard ware limitations to the 32 bit era the way slow down and flicker were to the 8 bit era. Virtually every racer on the Saturn had some degree of these problems. Some had more than others. I loved Daytona. The gameplay, and music were excellent. The graphics were good enough for me. And while people complain about the pop up, they don't mention that the arcade version also had pop up. Daytona was a good port.

Unfortenately the Dreamcast Port of Sega Rally 2 sucks. It's just sloppy on the technical Level. There is also a Version of Sega Rally for the PSP which I'd prever over the Dreamcast Version at any time.

  • @BorkHammer40k
    @BorkHammer40k 4 года назад +1

My earliest memory of gaming was playing the Saturn version of wipeout. What's weird is that my brother had a playstation at the time too, but that's the version we ended up with. While the game is a technical downgrade it does feature one crucial gameplay difference that vastly improves your chances of handling the steep difficulty curve.
In the PS1 original, if you even tap the walls, you will practically grind to a halt, making the later tracks a pretty ridiculous challenge to navigate. The Saturn version allows you to preserve much more of your momentum from wall bounces, making unlocking the bonus track much more plausible.
Thought that'd be interesting to share, but I loved the video and Daytona on the Saturn is still a blast.

while being a nintendo kid, i was in love with sega arcade, mostly games like daytona and sega rally , i have to admit, the machines were amazing, not because of the graphics , but because of the actual arcade machines being so good , but one game stood out, it was MANX TT SUPERBIKE, the arcade machine had a hydrolic superbike that was actually made out of 3 parts and u had to lean like a real superbike and man, u could work out a sweat playing it, i used to spend my whole allowance on that machine, it needed 2 takens and each token was like 33 cents, and i remember back then , my allowance was like $20 a week and half of it went on that machine and the rest on video gaming magazines.....best part of friday afternoon , is finish school go out with my friends, go for a burger then hit the arcades until evening then pick up the weekly or monthly gaming magazines and comic books, i would then take my mom's car keys, sit in the car with my comic and games magazines, grab a snack and a drink and read them in the parked car under the house....i miss those days so much.

Also I own a Dreamcast and it’s so much fun to play use and collect for. Too bad Saturns US games r so rare. And too bad they’re so limited. The game prices aren’t worth it at all personally. They’re inflated beyond any real sense. But a few of the classics make it worthwhile in my opinion.

I'm sorry, Lord X, but I find it endearing that you're grasping at straws to find good things to say about the Saturn 3D library. Unlike the Dreamcast, it had very few good 3D games - most of these would not even be in a top 50 PS1 racing games ranking. I've never played any racing game that came as close to perfection as Sega Rally. The physics didn't seem floaty and the cars had a proper feeling of weight and inertia to them without sacrificing the perception of speed, as many later games seemed to do. It was also an exercise in restraint with only 3 cars and 4 tracks, one of each being an unlockable. But everything was honed to a razor's edge. Each portion of a track could be played again and again to find just the right way to shave off a few tenths of a second. The only other racing games that felt as enjoyable to me were Gran Turismo 2 with its variety and immense customization and Colin McRae Rally 2.0. From the PS2 era onwards many games including sequels to Sega Rally and the two mentioned titles appeared to sacrifice fun for realism or more content. A gem like this could only have come from an era where arcade games were still king.

I'm not huge on racing games, but Sega Rally is easily one of my all time most played. I included it in a tournament I was holding a couple of years ago, and everyone initially thought it'd be boring. By the end, nearly every player was just waiting for another shot at shaving another second or two from their times, shouting at each success or mistake.
Also, for the last ten months or so at work, when one of my employees calls out due to COVID, I have been singing "Coronaaaaa" to the Daytona USA theme, and then I have to explain where it's from. I keep doing it anyway.

Sadly I was the only one of my friends that liked racing games or racing in general. But I liked to point that although not popular, racing games were a greatly diverse genre. Football games, soccer games, basketball games, etc... had one or two serious decent games each. But if you wanted to race, you had a great deal of good games, each one with a mostly complete different way of driving.

I could blow through it with ease. And the soundtrack is awesome to me. The Avex Trax are in my top ten Saturn soundtracks of all time. "So HIgh" is top five for me.

You’re not the only one, Tim’s soundtrack is very very good and you do not miss much the psx exclusives, yet in my opinion it controls better, except for the music they improved basically everything with wipeout 2097 except a bit of speed and transparencies

No surprise at all about Sega Rally Championship getting #1. It is far and away the most impressive and fun racer. I think SRC was the first time I'd experienced being able to race your own ghost. I played it endlessly , listened to the soundtrack in my car when driving (perhaps not advisable!), and still enjoy it just as much as bitd.

Sega Rally is undisputed for sure, it ticks all the boxes you'd want in a port and improves on, them particularly the sound track. I had many hours playing this thing blaring through the stereo. As far as Daytona CCE goes, I never had the original in my collection and so I never had that expectation that it had to improve on the original port. I think it's a pretty solid racer in its own right, even though it just doesn't have the wham factor the Arcade game has with its glitzy soundtrack and frantic racing. I had certainly played the Arcade game and the Arcade Saturn version before I was gifted CCE, and while I wanted that original experience I also didn't have heightened expectations.

For me SCORCHER is perhaps my favorite racing game on Saturn.. I was so addicted to the game, played it on first person view for 5 stright hours resulting in a headache.. It is so fast and so good looking. And yes I was able to finish the game one time.
I also like Cyberspeedway, (the songs Daygo Blues and Tabatha are awesome)
Manx TT is a good game.

A great selection of games, Sega Lord X. I'm glad to see some much needed love for the oft overlooked Virtua Racing, Hang On GP, and F1 Challenge. Personally, I would have replaced Wipeout with 2097 (XL in the US and A) because it's a far superior game and a better conversion (I even struggled to enjoy the original PS1 game). And I'll have to hunt down Street Racer after your recommendation: looks like fun.
I picked up Andretti Racing on your recommendation a while back and really didn't gel with the more simulation nature of the game. It's far from a bad game, but definitely not to my tastes.
And I love Daytona CCE and CE. I agree with your points that it plays differently from the coin-op, but for me it's hardly a disappointing game. Forget that it's meant to be a remixed version of the original Daytona USA, and you'll find it's still a great game.
Still, great video. Racing games are one of the main reasons I first got a Saturn and you've given the Saturn community a list of great titles worth playing.

I really wish SEGA would have played more to the Saturn's strengths. There were so many awesome "super scalers" in their library that could have all benefited from an AGES upgrade. One could partially blame Sony for upsetting the gaming landscape. One could also blame SEGA for not blazing their own trail. Alas, it's all in the past. Luckily, we got SLX to take us on these fantastic journeys into his personal experience with the SEGA saga. Thanks bro, you are the rose colored glasses that help make the past just a little bit brighter.

Nice list! My personal top games would be heavily influenced but what I had in the 90's (I have expanded the collection since, but it is not the same thing to play something for the first time 20 years+ down the road, some has not aged very well). All games would look dated today, so high frame rate, good drawing distance is more valuable - and of course control/gameplay :)
    1. Sega Rally (by far the most well-made game)
    2. Daytona USA (good high-paced arcade fun, drawing distance only real drawback to be)
    3. Need for Speed (different feel than the Sega-games, but still lot of content and fun with 2-players)

I'm not sure how Wipeout gets in ahead of Wipeout 2097? 2097 is better in every way, especially when considering you can use the Analogue controller to play it making it better than the Ps1 version in my opinion.
I absolutely loved Daytona but i also share the same amount of love for the CCE version, sure it has a more 'simulation' feel to the driving, just because it doesn't play like the original doesn't mean there is anything wrong with it, and once you unlock the hornet its even better.

The problem with Sega's first party offerings for racing games for the Saturn, is that they each had 3 or 4 tracks. They were still stuck in the arcade mindset, and did not offer much content.

    • @THENAMEISQUICKMAN

Yeah, this was a major issue. I know the Saturn lacked an iconic sim racer like Playstation had in Gran Turismo, but was that really the excuse for always releasing games with a track number you can count on one hand?

Nice to see some Virtua Racing love--lots of folks bag on that one. Up until the Switch VR came out, that was my favorite game in the series. Also probably my favorite saturn racer, largely for having races long enough to 'zone out' and 'enter the groove.' Most of the usual suspects end entirely too quickly for me.

  • @GRNDZA108

Totally right on #1. Even today there aren’t many games that can hang with it. Hang On GP was one of the first games I played when I got my first Saturn back in the mid-00s. Even with just the dpad, it grabbed me right away. When I heard Manx TT was better I got excited, but tbh I always went back to Hang On. Manx was kinda dingy, the tracks weren’t as exciting, and that repetitive music drove me up the wall. I seriously can’t believe they shipped that game with like four minutes of music. But Hang On’s first stage will forever be a 32-bit highlight for me.
