    F1 live Information & F1 Challenge do have a significant number of differences. First off the live information cam is missing from F1 Challenge, in its place is a rear view mirror, both of which actually slow the game down a fair bit that its actually very noticeable when you switch it on and off during play, it can't be far off running at half the speed when switched on. also there is no commentary in F1 Challenge, just music!
    Just a quick word on GT 24, it is fully 3D controller compatible for anyone who was wondering!

    And F1 Challenge is a great SEGA arcade-style racer.

    Hi from France ! Great video who bring me lot of memories about this Saturn that I love so much ... Keep up the good work ! PS : I especially play at Impact Racing (who was a good and honest game), Scorcher too (I love this one with its unique visuals). And on raçing I play a lot at Sega Rally / Daytona USA remix / WipeOut and WipeOut 2097 ! Love the Saturn.

    I always fancied Cyber Speedway, which I think was on that Mean Machines Sega VHS preview (still called Gran Chaser), but yeah, that soundtrack sounded out of place even then. I think they saw that Wipeout was going with club/dance music and they decided to corner the grunge market. Great timing.

    F-1 Challenge (never understood the hyphen) had such an awesome soundtrack, it definitely deserves a call out! I feel like it's a rare version where the Japanese missed out! Live Information always feels a bit soulless to me... Always been a Sega guy, but I felt like the Saturn let me down when it came to racers. Luckily the Dreamcast put that rignt. Great vid as always Guys!

    Great vid.
    Watching it solidified my sentiment that Japanese gaming culture was so much more mature - as in, refined - during the mid-late 90s compared to the West. Games were so much broader in scope and appeal in Japan. It was like a menu at a fancy restautant with a variety of dishes, great and small, to cater to every whim and fancy. Comparatively, we were still on the Kids Meal selections and the vegetables of gaming were Ewwww to us.

    • @SEGAGuys
      @SEGAGuys  Месяц назад +2

      @@petermalek935 Cheers Peter, and you’re spot on … it’s almost ironic that in the west we had gaming magazines bemoaning the “bare bones” arcade experience, while in Japan they were leaning heavily into their culture and creating racing games around it, most of which had several layers to them.
      Funnily enough, I only found out about Impact Racing after your Best of Saturn piece on it for the SHIRO! site. The Roadblasters influence is brilliant but the game does a lot of clever things outwith the racing experience (power ups, special missions, unlockable weapons, track radar/map).
      Glad you enjoyed it mate. - James

    Sadly the Saturn had no chance against the PS1 back then...
    When i was hanging out in the game shop instead of ya know doing "stuff" the Saturn was not popular.
    Most Kids where standing around the PS1 playing Ridge Racer or Bio Hazard yeah it was like that but i got to the Saturn later and i still play games and think the Console was underrated. Thank you Sir!

    Great video, James! I've honestly never played ANY of these games, and I'm tempted to try some of them out of pure curiosity.
    The main thing that stands out to me is that shocking draw distance of Gale Racer. What. Were. They. Thinking? Surely they could have made other sacrifices to get some of that draw distance back; it looks "literally unplayable". And as you say, such a shame because there seem to be loads of other quirky, original features otherwise.

    Underrated by whom? Can't reviewers rate it any way they like?
    I would rate them like this. Impact Racing 7/10, Cyber Speedway 6/10, Gale Racer 6/10 (there is a fully functional Rad Mobile cabinet in Amsterdam to play), Initial D (didn't play Saturn version), High Velocity Mountain Racing 7/10, Scorcher 4/10, F1 Challenge 7/10, GT 24 (didn't play), Drift King 97 8/10, Highway 2000 7/10.

      @@CasperEgas the term “underrated” doesn’t mean “score”, Casper.

      @@CasperEgasAre you ok, Casper? You’re a regular, positive commenter on the channel (29 comments), but you seem irked by this video. It’s a bit of fun mate, no-one is saying they’re the best racing games ever.
      High Velocity aka Togue is enjoying a renaissance in the SHIRO community challenge right now, with many players discovering the depth of the drifting mechanics and finding out that there’s a really good game beneath the surface.
      I think that meets the definition of an underrated game.

    • @CasperEgas
      @CasperEgas Месяц назад +5

      @@SEGAGuys I don't mean to critisise your video. I liked watching it. But I am a bit irked by the term underrated, which is used so often nowadays. I would say these are you less well known Saturn racers. But there is a reason why they are. Underrated makes it look like reviewers or consumers totally got it wrong and these were just classics that they missed. You could argue Drift King or Initial D did start franchises that became sort of underground hits. But these first ones aren't the best. You did give all these games a fair shake in the video, I am just not convinced they are underrated in any way.

    Sega was censorship-happy in the 90s (the baffling changes to Streets of Rage 3), and even worse, SOA didn't even want to support the Saturn anymore, leaving many of the best Saturn games unlocalized. The American version of Highway 2000 never had a chance

    Sega Saturn is just a slow computer just like every retro console. The games make the systems just like the games that get emulated . Tired of hearing underrated when reality is on fire

      Ok stick to Nintendo, Microsoft or Sony but Saturn is a underrated console with many great games and could have been great but sega made horrible decisions at the time not fully focusing on the system but 3 systems at the time, saurn, sega cd and 32x when the correct decision should have been to focus on one system. So if you are sick hearing about Saturn and retro consoles why are you watching this video? So let me remind you THIS IS A GREAT CONSOLE.

    I wouldn’t say those games were underrated, especially in comparison to what was going on in playstation land. Some truly awful looking games, even back then. Third parties were for the most part rubbish on Saturn when it came to racing games and 3d games in general
    As for Sega;
    I don’t understand how they couldn’t capitalise on their best games, it’s absolutely criminal we didn’t get a Saturn sequel to Sega Rally. Even if it was just more tracks and more cars with perhaps a career mode. We’d have lapped it up back in the day. Still it wouldn’t be Sega if they didn’t find a way to miss an open goal.
