Welcome to our new content. As the Weapon Detective, we are investigating modern weapon systems of the Second Cold War. The Weapon Legends is about older weapon systems. In our videos, we tell their epic stories which made them a legend. The Weapon Legends investigates these stories, reads between the lines, analyse, and tells the untold. In our videos, you can find technical information as well as historical backgrounds, what happened during the development processes, combat experience and political projection. Let the wisdom of history show us what the future would be like. Let’s investigate the veteran weapons of the past together.

Just imagine back when the Mirage III came in service back in the 60's. Most aircrafts types at the time were early fighters jets not even capable of supersonic speed. And now comes this elegant, nimble, super agile and also super fast +Mach 2 hot rod. What a jump in capabilities it presented. This kind of capabilities jump between fighter design generation is since long gone. Now it's not in the hardware anymore, but probably the software.

In 1940, French President Albert Le Pen resisted the Nazi German invasion of his country for just one day.
Then he ran away like a dog to an unknown place, and the pens of French historians and the media fell silent about mentioning this disgrace.
Remain silent in remembrance of those who did not have the honor of resistance one day in the face of the occupation
🔴 In fact, the best thing Trump did was slap the garbage to Macron when he talked about the weakness of NATO and its independence from protecting America.
Trump told him, If it wasn't for the USA, you'd be speaking German now 😏😎
Although he softened it and did not remind him of what the Germans had done to them and the cowardly French remained in front of them for a few hours.

Credit for the Success of the Mirage III has to go to Israel. If not for Israel, the Mirage III might never have had cannons installed, which more than doubled the combat effectiveness of the plane. Most of Israel's air-to-air kills during the 6-Day war were credited using guns instead of more expensive and less reliable missiles, a lesson the USAF and USN would learn the hard way over Vietnam almost a decade later. Israel also studied the Mirage III minutely and isolated its strengths as well as its weaknesses. The Mirage III wasn't a great horizontal turning dogfighter against Arab MIG 17s and 19s, but it was excellent in the vertical which helped to nullify the advantages of the slower but more nimble MIGs. When the dust settled after the 1967 war, the spectacular kill-ratio of the Mirage III in Israeli service brought many customers to Dassault and a lot of prestige to France. That success was further magnified when Israel, making use of all the data they gained through real war experience, ordered a cheaper and less complicated Mirage III that would be called the Mirage 5. It is sad that France, which gained so much from their association with Israel, would end up stabbing their best customer in the back by refusing to deliver the ordered and paid for Mirage Vs for purely political reasons. It was that broken deal that caused the rift with Israel and France and the reason why Israel felt justified in building their own Mirage V, better known as the Nesher.

Regarding the U2 interception in France, US were spying France for weeks despite the fact that the U-2 was clearly identified by french radars. US government refused to admit their were spying nuclear facilities. In response, french air force put a support rocket engine to the Mirage III and this one was capable to intercept and overtake the U-2 by surprise. The US pilot was clrealy frightnned because he was thinking to be in total safety at its altitude. The french pilot has taken a shot of the U-2 above french territory like a proof. After that never a U-2 came back

The Morane-Saulnier MS 464 which was the main fighter in the french air force was not a match to german Messerchmitt BF 109E on the paper and its poor capacities (speed, engine), french strategy made them mostly azll destroyed on the ground without any fight (air surprised attacks to thrash allied aviations on their bases)... The surprise was done that the few which were safe and able to fight did claim many victories other german planes, surprisingly, especially when you considere that they fought bravely at 1 against 6 mostly and french pilots did more hours of flying and fighting by day than their allied british fighters during the blitz and sealion !
The alone good fighters french had arrived too late and in too little number : Marc Bloch MB 152 and even better the Dewoitine D520. In May 1940, Dewoitine produced an excellent improvement of the D520, the D531 which had the capacities better than Spittfire and Focke Wulf 190 ! But the 3 prototypes which were put on a ship to go hiding in north africa, disapeared in the sea after a submarine (british or german, it's not truly known) sank the ship and most of the plans of this fighter.

MS406 not 464, and the successor from the Dewoitine 520 was the D551 not 531 and the 3 finished D551 was never "send to north Africa", but in 1941, Dewoitine was forced from the germans to destroy it, despite they was first hidden as "sport aircraft" (without armament) , and the Bloch 152's successor was the Bloch 157, one prototype was built and tested from the germans in 1942 and the prototype engine send to germany by BMW. The performance from the MB157 was similar to a Mustang P51D, but in 1940!

Notice, "Dassault" is pronounced "Dassoooo" rather than "Das-who" as it is done in this upload. I wonder if the Russians also used terms as the "Mirage killer" or "Phantom-butcher" to promote their MiGs and Sukhois in the Third World during the Cold War. Or is that something typically from "the West" Any Russians here who can comment on this ?

Suddenly I heard a tremendous roar and an A-7P from Portuguese Air Force passed overhead, followed three seconds later by a Mirage 5 from Belgium Air Force, then a second and a third!. They were not flying higher than 300 ft AMSL and certainly not less than 450 knots! And seagulls be damned.

Secondly, I major piece of information is never mention when discussing the South African Mirage III.
South Africa developed and used the world's first HMS (Helmet Mounted Sights, for off-bore firing) system in the late 1960s against Soviet Pilots.
This was nearly a full 20 years, before the Soviet Union developed and deployed their first HMS system.
