  • When you think of 4th generation fighters designed in the late 70’s, which aircraft come to mind? Likely the F-15 Eagle and F-16 Fighting Falcon for starters, perhaps the F/A-18 Hornet, and for Eastern designs-probably the MiG-29 Fulcrum. But don’t forget the many great 4th gen fighters designed in Europe, many still operational today, such as the Dassault Mirage 2000.
On this episode, Mathieu “Matéo” Carbon-formerly a French Air Force fighter pilot and now host of the 9Gs podcast-joins us from Hong Kong to discuss the usual ‘aircraft series’ topics on the Mirage 2000 and helps answer listener questions including the lowest altitude he ever flew (hint: it was below sea level!).
Be sure to sign up for a chance to win one of three Mirage 2000C DCS modules by Razbam Simulations, together with the Red Flag campaign built by our very own team member, ‘Baltic Dragon.’ Entry is free.

This plane got me into DCS sim flying. Hornet was a bit overwhelming in its complexity and while with time it has grown on me greatly the Mirage was the first and only plane that I could fly and fight so effortlessly. I had no clue what one vs 2 circle. Corner speed, etc. Meant... but this plane juat intuitively flies so well and does exactly what the pilot asks it to do, that I was free to fight rather than fly the plane. And the number of people I forced to overshoot me and Magic II them as they went by was amazing. There are many planes that are superior to the 2000C in DCS... but the plane brings enough that anyone who undersestimates you regrets it really fast.

Although I'll admit to being perplexed that anyone was actually offended by the intro, Jell-O wasn't even dismissive of those issues, important as they are. I actually had to come back and listen to the beginning again to remind myself what could have been so controversial after he mentioned it at the start of the following episode. A fun fact : Taiwan became the first customer to purchase Mirage 2000-5s in 1992.
Thanks to the Mirages, Taiwan became the first East Asian country to have a FOX-3 capable aircraft . (Japanese F-15s were using AIM-7s , Chinese Sukhois were using AA-10s)
During the 90s it was the best fighter jet in Asia, however, due to lack of continuous upgrades, they're also starting to show their age.
Mirages are like French "Louis Vuitton", sleek but expensive to operate and maintain.

As a 2000 maintainer, I won't say that the 2000 is a particularly expensive aircraft to maintain compared to its competitors. It is quite comparable to the F-16 in that regard. Today they cost more, but because the airframes are from 1980's

I would love it if you invited a swiss "militia pilot" as we call it here. from the beggining and up to the F-5, the majority of swiss fighter pilots were part time fighter pilots, all having a "normal" job besides that (farmers, mechanics, physicians, doctors, etc...). They also probably have a lot to say about what it was to be neutral in the middle of cold war Europe, highway bases operations, caverns operations, etc...

Regarding the parting shot from the AeroE: I did a comparison of all the major systems like radars, engines, and FLIR/LST/EO pods in the USAF, USN, and USMC Air Component Forces for ODS, along with the specific mission profiles for each of those aircraft. There were over a dozen types of fighter and attack radars, as well as at least a dozen different type of engines, and most of the designs had 2 engines. The logistics tails and specialized training for all of the maintenance crews was labyrinthine. Spare parts on commonly-removed components was out of control. The logistics war of ODS is impressive when you look at how many complicated and failure-prone systems the mx crews had to keep up for the fight.
JSF streamlines that logistic war into something that is not only beneficial to the 3 US services, but coalition partners as well. There was an article recently where USAF F-35As flew to the UK for training, and UK maintainers were able to service the jets, even though they have a much different variant with the F-35B. Something like that wasn't even a thing with the F-4 from what I understand, since the UK F-4s had different engines.

I love these podcasts! I’ve watched most of not all of season one, and have been catching up on the aircraft series. If you don’t mind I have a podcast idea that might help a lot of younger people like me. I want to join the military, and become a pilot. That goal will not change, but there are so many aircraft that I want to fly like the f/a-18, f-15, a-10, and the uh-60. The problem is that they are in different services. Maybe you could do a podcast in the future that can help people like me decide on which service to go into. Some points you can make would be living conditions, work/life balance, pay(if that changes), and any extra details that might be needed to tell.

The Kfir was substantially redesigned, used the GE J-79, and had fixed canards. The USN used it as an aggressor for a while in the 80s.
The preceding Nesher was the Mirage 5 derivative that Mathieu described, which indeed used a "cloned" SNECMA ATAR-9C engine.
Also, there are rumors that the French AdA simply handed the plans to the Israelis, no espionage required.

From my understanding the IAI *Nesher* was built from use of stolen airframe and engine plans of the Mirage 5 and with use of Israeli avionics.
The *Kfir* was a further modification of the Neshe by using a license-built General Electric J79 engine along with the addition of canard foreplanes and "dogtooth" leading edges to the main wing.

    • @JoJo-vm8vk
      @JoJo-vm8vk 4 года назад +3

The thing is that when they exported Nesher and Kfir to South America countries, they found Aérospatiale* markings on airframe (= made in France).
Considering the difficulties that Switzerland had to produce ATAR 9C engine, it's very unlikely that Israel manage to produce that engine. They didn't produce engine before it after.
Bottom line: these are cover stories, because officially France declared embargo, but they delivered parts kit to assemble the planes in Israel.
*Mirage III is Dassault, but the demand was so high on Mirage III that they had to outsource some of the production.

Nice podcast. Unfortunately you only had a -5F pilot and no D pilot. The mirage 2000D is the F-15E s mirage as the -5F is the C except the mirage 2000D can’t do air to air. The 2000D/N have more differences than what he told you. The D and N are different frame that only the pilots of those can really explain. It’ll be great if we could have a mirage 2000D pilot or NOSA (WSO) on the show to talk about the mirage 2000D.

Vincent, there is a dude on the DCS Forums that goes by the handle "MaxMPower" hes a flanker piot in the RuAF I believe he's flown the Su-33 Su-27 and Su-35. You need that dude on your show, his english isn't great though so maybe a translator would be required.

Great episode again, thank you guys! I wonder if you ever plan to do an episode on the Su30, it is a very wide family of aircraft? If you do, please try not to find an Indian pilot, I think they are very biased. The MiG21 guy was telling in one sentence they didn't even have an AOA meter and in the second, how good the aircraft was for everything. MiG29 was the same for me, I was a little disappointed in Indian interviews. Anyway, I'm up for whatever you come up with next!

This episode is not gunna be for me. I'll come back later. Military isn't even about justice, let alone social justice. It's about war, national defense, and the great people and machines that serve to support it.

Ah.............................Well at least I'd rather be embarrassed than disappointed.
In my defense, if a Navy vet living in CA invites a French pilot to the show and mentions topics of current events involving misplaced cultural values and outrage, I'm inclined to believe them.
