- Director James Lapine's New York Times bestselling book chronicles the creation of the Pulitzer Prize-winning Stephen Sondheim musical, "Sunday in the Park with George." Correspondent Mo Rocca talks with Lapine, the show's director and book writer, and with original stars Mandy Patinkin and Bernadette Peters, to connect the dots of how this musical exploration of a pointillist painting broke new ground for a Broadway musical.

I’m so, so glad they believed in this show. When Mandy’s voice breaks at the memory, I tear up. This is such a moving show. Sure, it’s not Sondheim’s most iconic work, but it’s one of the most moving and classic. Truly.
As a young girl in Manhattan I remember seeing "Sunday in the park with George" with the original cast. Even though we would often go to shows for some reason this one was always in my memory. And then years later, I ended up in Chicago for University. There the Art Institute had this Seurat painting and I was always drawn to it. (Also, remember that scene in Ferris Bueller!?!). For her age Bernadette Peters still knocks it out of the park.. And Mandy Patinkin... If you haven't already checked it out his son's uploads on Mandy's RUclips channel is hilarious.
So... In summary, I'm a fan of this painting, of Mandy Patinkin, of Bernadette Peters, and of CBS Sunday Mornings!!!
Bernadette Peters my dear, has a face full of chemicals and surgery. I love her but she doesn't look anything like Bernadette Peters. Sorry to say but she looks strange.
I remember when I saw the painting in the Art Institute. I wept at finally being able to see it in 2012.
What a cast. Bernadette and Mandy are just 👌🏽 *muah chef’s kiss
I love how he's like "we wrote because we got high"
What’s fascinating in this day and age is that it’s never been easier for individuals to express themselves. Relatedly, how many people fell in love with Sondheim’s work through RUclips videos of his musicals?
❤️
bernadette peters does not age
Two words: Bo, tox.
It's called, surgery and Botox.
Enjoy
Why do you guys re-upload things? Are you cutting out copyrighted stuff or something? On the Plaza Suite piece I noticed you took the video down and re-uploaded it without that Wayne Newton song.
It is probably to get rid of my derisive comments. I keep looking for the Mariah Cary story and it’s not even up anymore.
Apartaos de mi, hacedores de maldad.
at a buffet, i personally sneak corndogs into the buffet so others can enjoy them. I hide 6 corndogs in my jacket pockets. it then, is a joy for me to see other patrons of the establishment eat my corndogs thinking they were part of bufffff
Well said, sir. My sentiments exactly.
Dr. Ryan, sir, you are a genius! I never thought of _adding to_ a buffet! Well done.
I would too kind of the same at the movie theaters I wish I could have shared it though.... And all card's on the table I feel like I'm in a confessional
.. I brought my own doggy bags instead of them just throwing out the leftovers on my plate....
Hallelujah I have been absolved!,
Feels good getting that off my chest thanks for letting me bend your ear.... Cool beans and meow meow 🤘🕯️🦩🌱🪄🎨🎼🙏
Came here to say this.
@@bellautopia818 YOU ARE ABSOLVED OF ALL WRONG DOINGS!!!!!!
This may sound cruel but the music for this show is largely forgettable. Unlike Sondheim's more successful musicals (Sweeney Todd, Anyone Can Whistle, Company, Passion). Streisand recorded the song "Putting It Together" for her Broadway Album and that was a nice tribute. Her new arrangement saved that tune.
It's not a jukebox musical for sure. You put in the work to get something amazing out in the end.
But I'll let others make that decision: they usually do 🙄.
I just watched a taped performance of that musical with the original cast. It’s pretty bad. Probably should have created it without smoking weed!
i loved jt!!!!!
Try Into the Woods, full pro-shot on RUclips. My first Sondheim, and now that I've seen more, not even my favorite anymore. The first act is fun, but the second act is what the show is all about...I bet you won't like it either.
