  • One in five fish consumed worldwide is the product of illegal fishing. Fifteen years after completing an initial investigation, a team of journalists returns. Their goal? To investigate the practice today, and find out who these fishing pirates are.
The film follows members of the environmental organization FishAct on a dangerous search for clues in Tunisia. Here, illegal fishing boats snatch catches from local fishing crews and destroy sensitive seagrass meadows as they trawl coastal waters. At local fish markets, illegally caught shrimp receive documentation for export, ultimately ending up on Europe’s dinner plates as a supposedly legal product. According to environmental organizations, illegal fishing still accounts for 26 million tons of produce per year.
How are these fishing pirates still being allowed to exploit the world's oceans? The filmmakers look for answers in the Mediterranean, US, EU and Australia, talking to officials, activists and experts.

Lots of Chinese fishing boats are fishing endangered species in Persian gulf regardless of any warning. 😢

The Lots of Chinese fishing boats you mentioned are not true. The Persian Gulf has few resources and is unprofitable for commercial fishing, let alone fishing for endangered species. If what I said is wrong, please refute me with an example instead of just speaking.

Glad to hear that Australia took such strong action! I'm Australian and am very proud of this action.
Confiscating ships, and all equipment should fund the enforcement, along with fishing licenses.

When I was recently diving in el nido Philipines we came across 2 different reefs where they had just got done dynamite 🧨 fishing
So sad 😢 so much waste And partially dead fish dying slow So horrible plus they were destroying the reefs with huge anchors
These are some of the most beautiful reefs I’ve seen anywhere in the Philipines. It’s so sad there being ruined 😢😢😢
    ✌🏼🇺🇸. Thanks for the video

DW should make a documentary what EU itself ....with Germany in front as the heavy weighter.....are doing with their own form of what is shown in this video by pressuring and threatening a small nation, Norway, to give them fishing quotas in the Norwegian EEZ-zone. ....and for what reason should Norway just give away quotas for free? ...which for Norway is an important fish resource? EU and Germany has absolutely nothing to give back in exchange. They think that simply because their "meat weight"/ they are bigger they can pressure a small nation where fisheries are the largest export product (appart from oil/gas) ....hence of vital....economic importance. No EU country has such an economic situation were sea food are of such economic importance. Due to pour management of the fish resources which has been depleted along EU countries EEZ zones ....they now wants to dig into Norway's EEZ zone and the fish resources there. After UK left EU they have no longer anything of fishing areas to trade with Norway....but still they want Norway's resources by simple pressure and threat of sanctions in form of ZOLL. This "process" is ongoing right now. What a dirty game.
There was a reason for people in Norway to twice vote NO to join the EU....and that was to have control over their own fish resources. If anyone is in doubt of what the EU fishing fleet are capable of doing they should take a look at the fishing areas outside Ireland and Scotland ...which were destroyed of the EU fishing fleet which is not much better than shown in the video.....

Trackers are easily turned off and manipulated so as long as there's a fish left in the sea, the illegal boats will carry on regardless.

Don't be so defeatist- we can force governments to make AIS tracking compulsory if the ship wants to come into territorial waters. We can push governments to investigate and punish illegal catches. Apathy is the ally of illegal activity.

I have watched many documentaries on conservation, etc, and have noticed there seems to be a pattern. Why is it that it always seems to be one particular asian country involved in so much illegal activity. They seem to have a finger in everything which is damamaging the future and obviously care very little. Poaching protected species seems to be their idea on how to save themselves not the world. No consequences either to any such organisations as most are run by money and seems in some countries "everyone has a price"

It was trollers killing off fish stocks that caused the Somali Pirate issue because their government wouldn't do anything to intervene. As a result, they started taking the boats themselves hostage to get money from what they would've normally got from their fishing.

I used to be a commercial fisherman myself but I would just do it for license purposes and what happened was so many species of salmon 110 species became extinct so they started having fish farms and making funky artificial fish instead but most of the loss was due to other countries coming over and stealing our fish and not following the fishing regulations overfishing eventually all the fisheries will be extinct when was global warming on top of that the food supply will get short when it comes to natural fish they will all be farm-raised eventually
