For the new Illustrator users and Windows users. The part where she uses cmd 7 is Object -> Clipping Mask -> Make. As per her instructions make sure you have the clipping mask and the background selected. I got stuck on this myself.
I can't count the times I have stumbled through AI. There are fewer and more intuitive controls in the Space Shuttle than in AI or PS. I almost always end up doing workarounds in powerpoint or with a thumb drive in hand headed to the graphics shop. This is the first video actually demonstrating functional skills in a repeatable way. Thanks for the hard work.
I remember when I felt EXACTLY like you! It was so frustrating. Now that I know Illustrator much better, it seems so fluid and easy. You will get there! Just keep practicing with it, and try to use it every day. Good luck! 🥰
Ohhhh gotcha! I'm assuming it's because you're not actually changing the color of a PNG (changing it to vector which isn't a PNG anymore). So the title is slightly misleading I suppose. :D
@@GDHT Well technically I can export the vector image as PNG. In my case vector is even better, but I am sure most of the 40 people are still nice people, but less nice then a people who liked this tutorial :) I just think the tutorial was high quality content and presented with all kind of tips that I learned on the way.
This is AWESOME! Stumbled upon this video and so far it's been the best one I've seen. I do have a question - I have a PNG texture file which I want to colour, how do I change the whole thing into 1 solid colour without losing the textures?
Thank you so much! This would probably be something best done in Photoshop, because textures can be hard for illustrator to pick up in Image Trace… they might have a lot of detail.
Great video. Thank you. Is there a way to not group fill with a color but with a letter or number or fill with a symbol. Could you add a object symbol to the color palette?
You can make a pattern with Pattern Maker and add that as a swatch. Then fill with the swatch. Here's a tutorial about patterns if you want to check it out: ruclips.net/video/chWxPsdcNGQ/видео.html
@@GDHT Thank you. I will see watch that one and see if I can quickly get the changes I am looking for. I am new to finding my way around in illustrator. I will see what you have on skill share as well.
This video is awesome, although sadly too advanced for me at the minute LOL. I just want to learn how to add a white border around a png like a sticker would have. I found a great website, but my fill option doesn't seem to work the way they describe. I will keep your video for when I'm more advanced with illustrator. Thanks
Do you have a dumbed down version for new people to this? My version is a little different than yours and I am not familiar with some of the terms you are using.
When i tried to make the clipping mask, it says "the top object is very complex and may cause the document to fail to print or preview if used as a mask....." and then it doesn't work, is there a solution for this?
Will these steps work for doing text? Let's say I have an image that says "have a great day" and I want to make it a different color, would I use the same steps? Is there a video on your channel that would guide me through that?
@@GDHT ok I think I'm doing something way wrong. I have the newest version of AI and I'm just alllllll the way off. Essentially I have text based logos and monograms that I'm wanting to recolor with textures. My clipping mask isn't meshing with the textured image. Once I get to 4:12 in the video I'm stuck with a black object and the texture behind it without it actually changing the color of the object (if that makes sense). I tried making it a compound path as you stated in another comment but that didn't do anything, I'm having an issue selecting both layers to get it to all mesh together. And I'm using windows if that makes a difference to anything?
Hmmm, try clicking on just the black object and hitting CMD 8 or CTRL 8. That will make sure the black piece is a compound path. Then select both and make clipping mask. Being on Windows shouldn't make a difference - they work exactly the same, except on Windows you use slightly different keyboard shortcuts.
@@GDHT its just a png in the shape of a baseball home plate. I tried grouping it, turning it into a shape and expanding. The compound path button still won't allow me to click it
@@emberrenae3097 if it is still a PNG file, the Compound path won’t work. Make sure you turn it into a vector file first, there are instructions in the video on how to do that.
For the expand part, did you have the image traced design selected? Are you able to click Expand, or is it grayed out? For CMD 7, you can select both the objects (black part and texture), then hit CMD 7 or CTRL 7, or go to Object > Clipping Mask > Make. Let me know if either is still not working for you! :)
@@GDHT Thanks for your answer, but I already had the bar at the top. If i click image trace, nothing happens. I also can't open the drop down menu. And there is no image trace window in windows >

Hi hun, how do I click command 7 after selecting mask and background? is there a way i can do this from tool bars?
On PC, it's CTRL 7. I'm not sure of the location off the top of my head, but it's called a clipping mask if you want to search under Help. :)
love you maam

It helper me so many wayss thankss!!. But when i was doing the cliping mask it said cant make clipping mask. How do i fix this? Thanks for thelp!!
Try making your clipping mask a compound path. It can only be 1 shape, and that causes Illustrator to see it as one shape.
Noted!!! And it workss! Thanks for your assistance 🙏🙏

Hmmm, Com 7? Can you let me know what min/sec you are in the video?

may i know what do mean by shift 7 and other that sounds similar literally?

Hi did used Aplaycation in corelDraw it's the same!? Atributes?
Hmm, I'm not sure - I don't use Corel Draw. Sorry!
after doing an image trace when i click expand nothing pops up for me to select object/fill
pls help
It probably is already expanded - can you see the nodes/anchor points?
@@GDHT i think you are correct, it seems like it already expanded and automatically selected object/fill, thank you!!!!
Idk why but when I trace the .png it colors the box where the image is contained in, ending up with a white square
If you're using the default setting, it will do its best to make a black and white image. If your design is light-colored, it will make it all white.

I can't find my image trace panel. Illustrator CC 2018
not even in the windows-menu :((
