Unknown Melbourne is a series exploring the weird and wonderful parts of Melbourne, Australia.
She speaks for the trees. She's the Lorax!
Delightful.
I let her know you said this. She said she’d update her LinkedIn accordingly.
Sure she's not an Ent? 8^)
I love this update
i want to bone that lorax
This man is literally the Australian Tom Scott and I love it
High praise. Tom makes great stuff.
@@JulianOShea so do you!!!
Nailed it.
Truly underrated videos, Melbourne's own Tom Scott, hope to see the channel go far.
Much appreciated!
@@JulianOShea If make videos with the production value of tom scott's I think you will get as far.
He's got more than 10 times the subs he did 2 weeks ago, looks like the algorithm has been kind to him :P Well deserved, too.
Still waiting on my time in the sun, though, accursed algorithm... Oh wait, my vids suck.
Tom Scott the sequel
I was waiting for someone else to make that comparison!
The little boy's story where the school ended up planting a tree was super sweet and a such a good example of how small actions lead to significant outcomes. Just subscribed so I'll binge watch all videos and maybe even send a letter to a tree.
I emailed a grevillea robusta in Fawkner Park a few years ago to thank it for feeding so many bats. It's nice to now put a face to the reply! She does a great job.
Very cool!
There's a tree in America that apparently owns itself and the land it's planted on, it was the beneficiary of the original owners deceased estate I believe
when a tree has more rights than a women in the 1920's
@@dennisp9326 in some parts of the world*
There's a few, actually. Tom Scott made a video on them.
@@itismethatguy no, most of the world. It really says something about a group’s rights when they have more rights in the Soviet Union than the majority of European countries at the time
This is the most "peak Melbourne" thing I've heard all week. We are just like this for some reason. Nothing to gain, nothing to lose. Just a nice gesture.
Yay for Melbs.
there is some to lose. hosting email addresses, plus the other electronic infrastructure required, costs energy and also actual dollars to run and maintain. so really, it has a net negative for the environment and our tax wallet.
not against it. dont care. just saying.
@@rapleyable it’s all good. They use a geothermal boiler to power the server. They use the off cuts from all the council wood chipper machines 😏
@@rapleyable All that overhead is sunk into the project whether people use the email addresses to send love letters or not. Being an environmental maintenance project, I'd hope it has a net positive effect on the environment.
@@russellphillips8417 i'm saying this from a physics point of view. there IS a net negative energy (electricity etc) component to creating, maintaining and using email. this is a fact.
Only just found your channel recently but my GOD it is amazing. As someone who has lived in Vic all my life, there are still so so many things I don't know about this city!!! Keep up the fantastic work
Glad you enjoy it - and pleased I can share some more about Melbourne. :)
Brilliant
Well done!
I am not going to say “you’re an Aussie Tom Scott”… because you are better, and do your OWN thing.
Well done!
No one is better than an Aussie. Don't stop trying though. Good luck with that.
I showed this video to some students today, and they were charmed by the idea - there will be some extra emails going out to the trees this week!
Wonderful! - I'm sure the trees appreciate it. :)
This is such a heartwarming video, shows how much some people really appreciate trees! Lovely video!
yes very lovely video
lmao Eret is just here
Unexpected...
didn't expect to see eret here lol
I've driven past that tree a number of time but, must admit, never really noticed it. I'm going to have to visit it sometime, when the weather is sunnier.
Well worth a look. It's internet famous.
Probably not a good idea to sit under it, if it has lots of bunya pines on it. Those pines are apparently huge, heavy and unpredictably dangerous. But on the upside, if there are any black cockatoos around, they love them.
I’m really stoked to have found your channel! You’re the first fellow Australian RUclipsr that does this style of content that I enjoy! (Not including veratsium or I did a thing)
Awesome! Thank you! Glad you’re enjoying it.
I planted my first tree 48 years ago with the help of my dad when I was four so I found it pretty neat that I can check on it using my phone. Now I live next to a tree farm or sustainable forestry if you will and have given away around ten thousand seedlings to people that camp in the area that help support my efforts by buying firewood that's I collect as part of forest fire protection which is blow down, fallen naturally or from maintenance. Never heard about this but I'm not really a tech person so I'll stick to giving away the many species local to where I live. Awareness has been raised, time for effort from everyone.
Tears in my eyes, man talking to tree.. what a great pleasure saying thanks to nature..
My dad worked for Melbourne City Council when I was born, and planted a tree for me in either Carlton or Fitzroy gardens. I'd love to find it again!
I vaguely remember seeing a headline a while back about being able to email trees but I assumed it must have been some other country. Had no idea you could do this in Australia! I think I’ll email a tree myself as well
I was just on a reddit thread about the Montague street bridge and your video was recommended. Someone called you "The Melbourne Tom Scott". Since i'm a big fan of Tom's videos and I live in Melbourne I knew I was going to like this channel. I'm now 10 videos deep and I can confidently say that I do like this channel and you are indeed the Melbourne Tom Scott. Keep making content because I will have watched your entire catalogue by bed time.
Glad you’re here - Enjoy the back catalogue!
This Lady is an absolute hero and also seems to be a delightful person!
I emailed a yellow chestnut in Carlton Gardens with a sad story. The tree wrote back with a very kind reply (and some tree puns). It was so sweet.
Dear 1040601,
Though we've never met, your splendour spills through from the screen. You are beautiful. Thanks for putting up with us. Love from Lisa 😍
Melbourne trees are gorgeous, I feel they take me back to a time I never lived when I’m around them, King St trees 💌I love u.
Loved it when she said , she don't dare say the wisdom of the tree....I've always thought if trees could speak they can tell passer-by what they have witnessed at that very spot. Examples, apart from the tree punts; I provided rain shelter for a lad who has now become the PM; or your grand parents used to come to the park and play when they were kids way before they met each other and got married; or I wept when a young heart broke just at the bench there; or my cousin tree up north whispered through the wind that Billy the Kid hid his treasure by his roots.....sigh,,,,I can only imagine what they can say.
Trees are one of my special interests. I regularly stop by to talk to my favourite trees in my local garden (Flagstaff). I like the eucalypts the most! Thank you for sharing about the app! I will send an email sometime
Know it’s lockdown so that’s probably why videos have stopped but please continue when we get out. Your videos are entertaining, seem well researched and bring even more life to our beautiful city. Keep it up
Dude, as a fellow Melbournite, this content is *chef's kiss* 👌 Just found you today through the crosswalk video and I can't stop watching. I feel like a stranger in my own city right now, but I'm learning so much! Thanks! ❤
PS: Don't envy her job. She's probably read some very weird emails but she can't say them on camera as it's bad PR for City of Melbourne and would encourage others to send equally weird if not weirder stuff 🤣
Glad you enjoy it!
I am so happy RUclips recommend this channel. A true gem!
my city actually did this for a bit! there were not very many trees (well there were a lot of trees, only a dozen you could contact though) but it was still cool.
man u are genuinely elite, every video ive watched from you, is so informative n just plainly intriguing. great fkn stuff mate, KEEP IT UPPP
Seriously great content, keep pumping it out! Just binged your entire channel.
This video made me so happy! I love your videos thank you for making them!
Thanks for watching! Glad you're enjoying them. :)
Just found your channel and i'm loving the videos, Julian. The amount of effort you put in really shows. Keep it up!
Fantastic video Julian!
I was surprised to see you recommended in my feed. As a student I participated in an Unbound trip (when it was Laika) and found it to be the most rewarding experience of my undergrad.
Thank you for all your work and curiosity, it changes people's lives.
Thanks! Cool you did an Unbound trip. This video making project has been something to fill the time until we can get back on a plane and go travelling. All the best!
I live about 200m from the most emailed tree - amazing thinking how I walk past a piece of Melbourne history almost every day and didn't realise!
Just found this channel. The quality is so high I just about hit the roof when I realised he doesn’t have millions of subscribers already. Definitely sharing to my mates, love your stuff mate…
Many years ago I went to a friends birthday party in the Botanical Gardens. There was this magnificent tree that had half of it green and lush and the other half was bare. So many wedding couples took photos underneath it, but all I remember was us all dancing around it with our shoes off. I need to find that tree and thank it for being part of such a wonderful memory.
This is amazing. ❤️
You are basically the Aussie Tom Scott mate. Keep up the awesome videos.
Such great content, thanks, Julian!
I'm amazed! I drive past the punt road tree twice daily. I've walked under it once, and just had to take pictures. I don't normally think of trees, but this one was definitely special.
Great work, I just finished watching all of your fantastic videos - thanks for the unknown great facts about Victoria and South Australia👏🏻
Thanks, Matt! Glad you’re enjoying them
Really enjoying your videos Julian. A bit of positivity a virtual exploration of our city is very welcome right now, thanks very much :)
Cheers, Michael!

Treerrific video Julian, this genuinely felt like a ray of sunshine.
I really appreciate all the wonderful things you present that I was not aware of in the city I have called home all my life, keep it up.
Thanks, Con
This is such a fantastic idea. We should get something like this set up is every major city in the country.

This is so cool, I 💚 this so much! I know a few trees in Sydney that I [and friends] would love to be able to email 🌳 like the one in Newtown/Camperdown Cemetery

Thank you, Julian!
Nice work Julian, another great vid 😁👍

I so wish that tere was a similar youtube channel for Sydney/NSW.

Thanks! 😃
I love your content! Keep up the good work
Cheers mate!
Amazing videos! Love your work :) wish you were in Sydney
Thanks, Kat. I’ll come and do a Sydney series. When we’re allowed out and about.
You are doing some nice work.
It would be great if you were able to get under Melbourne to show people the underground service tunnels that run under almost every street, complete with street signs.
For example, Lower Little Bourke.
There is also a service tunnel that runs between the royal children's and royal Melbourne under the foot path, or there was.
Apart from that, so many things have disappeared over the years.
It was great working for a utility in the CBD for over 10 years, I've probably been into and under every building in melbourne in the 80's and early 90's
was this video's quality processed by the tree!?
(jokes aside, really great video!)
Can you make a video on the Kelly Cahill Melbourne case? Or westall
This is so wholesome
We're in our 6th lockdown now. Or is it the 7th.... Thank you for crafting a lens that sheds uncommon light on the common, making the usual more than unusual. Same old, same old, some say of the everyday. Little do they know it's just a question of perspective mixed with dry wit.
We don’t even keep count now
@@boostman9935 True.
I think I subscribed at 5k only like 5 days ago now your on 25k proud of you mate
Thanks for being an early adopter. 😀
This guy is the Tom Scott of Australia!
I discovered this series the other day and have spent the last few days watching through it all. I just wanted to say how awesome it's been learning all these interesting things about my city in such a fun and engaging way, and I can't wait to see what you have in store next. Regards, a new subscriber.
Cheers Nick! Kind words - glad you’re enjoying them.
