Awesome progress , the fish look beautiful , and that Glasscages custom tank really is next level. These tips definitely got me through some struggles 😎
Love the pinky floss! It will clog if you don’t clean them often. I use in HOB filters so it is easy to get to. I used Purigen for 4-5 years. It does work and I’ve never had any issues but the idea of cleaning with bleach makes me nervous. To expensive to throw out when it’s dirty. I stopped using it. I think the activated carbon or Chemi pure are safer. When it gets dirty you trash it!
@11:19, “I’m excited about how clear it’s gonna look”….lol! Oh Ben, it already looks pretty clear to me!! Your tanks always look outstanding and crystal clear! Thanks for inspiring me!
Ben great video and techniques. For a few years now in smaller tanks (under 55 but I I'm sure it would work+) I've used a remarkable technique tought to me by my LFS owner when you have no access to any established media or substrate. It's a game changer for beginners especially. Fishless fuel or other ammonia chloride source for a 2ppm+ ammonia test, and fritz turbostart 700 (1 oz+ / 50 gal). Hands down put fish in the next day (24hrs+) with 0/0 amonia/nitrite. Nitrate in about a week. After working with it, it's the darndest thing I've ever seen. Now I have still experienced some mild "white smoke" bacterial blooming but it's harmless and goes away in a few days. Sorry didn't mean to yap this long. Thank you as always.
I wanna share another tip I learned. I was having some detritus floating around my tank just using the filter floss in my trough filter and a ugf for my biological. I think the spray bar was pushing the dirt through the floss too hard so it wasn't being caught very efficiently. So I put some of those cheap green pot scrubbing pads on top of the floss and now my water is clear as air! Couldn't be happier!
Sera make a mech substance that I've tested and like a lot. They are Green polishing balls called Crystal Clear that comes in a net. Totally rinse able, reusable and doesn't break apart. A little pricey, but I expect to be using it for many years! For sump use it can easily be tossed in the filter sock for a day or more of polishing. Love this journey with you Ben. Quick question, have you ever thought about keeping Lake "Tanganika" Cichlids like Tropheous?
It surprises me just how many products Sera offers. I always thought of them as just fish food but that’s a small percentage of what they offer. Regarding a Lake Tanganyika tank, not right now. I have my hands full. I’d probably do Discus or even a Mbuna tank if I had more time.
Hey Ben! Good to see you. I thought you would be scheduling a Cichlids & Studs live stream today. Plan it at least once a month that would be great. Good day 😀
Hey Ben ! So had a question as far as stirring up the tank. I stirred up my tank the other day and the next day it was super clear. Could it be because beneficial bacteria that was sitting In The substrate made it to my filter and collected and then as water kept flowing through it it got cleared up. Has this happened to you?
@@BenOchart the issue is you are calling it "matrix" and not "matrix carbon" your tub you showed in the video is seachem matrix. The matrixcarbon does not come in a tub.
@@BenOchart matrixcarbon only comes in a 500ML little and says MATRIXCARBON on the front. I bet if you go look at your tub of matrix, it just says "Matrix high capacity biofiltration" which again is NOT Matrixcarbon
I do it but I have a deep substrate and a second filter running on an established tank. Also I have tested my tap and have next to zero ammonia/chlorine. If your tank is under 6 months old and it's the only filter, no, use tank water to rinse.
Im confused? You use Matrix to clear your tank and throw it out after a month or so? **Edit** my bad, I use Matrix for biological media, I didn't realize there was a Matrix Carbon as well. Confused no longer
@@BenOchart your tub doesn't say Matrix carbon and you didn't state it was matrix carbon. There is a big difference between the two and I don't believe the carbon even comes in a tub. It would be great if you clarified for everyone who isn't familiar with the products. Standard matrix should never be replaced as it's deemed a biomedia. You're going to have people throwing away their matrix for no reason
the positioning of filter floss is totally wrong on my opinion on FX6 (bottom) or Sunsun (top). Polishing filter should not be place at the last section in which the water will hit last before exiting on the canisters. Filter media will clog and become inefficient.
Put it first? Nope. Big detritus chunks will block floss in one day. That’s why you do coarse, medium, then fine sponges, and last, that’s where you put something that will “polish” and grab the fine particles, like pinky or crib batting (poly fil). The only other place it would make sense would be before bio media so the media gets the clearest water possible and doesn’t get caked with big detritus build up.
@@BenOchart what i mean is, on fx6 the filter floss/pinky floss should place on the very top of the top tray base on the water flow direction to keep your media clean and on sunsun which be place on the bottom, get it?
To be clear for you, coarse then medium then fine sponge then your biological media then water exit from canister. There is no need to put any pinky floss at the very end section before water exits from canisters

The 300 is looking great Ben!
Coming together my friend

The depth of the tank is amazing
33” front to back. Lots of turnaround room for big fish.

I’ve heard good things about the Fritz Turbo ammonia.

spray bar over pumped? just trickle through a trough , could add a lower sized pump maybe
Awesome is the word for this video! So helpful in reviewing what can be utilized for optimal tank clarity! Thanks, Ben!
I'm glad you liked it
Tank looks amazing Ben!
300 looks awesome ben👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
That's a lovely tank mate
Thank you😀👍🏻
Beautiful clean tank, but I was wondering what your redox and pH levels were afterwards. Some resin based additives can lower pH and redox levels
I use. Matrix. As well. Good product ✅
You got that I was referring to the Seachem Matrix carbon (not their bio media), right?
@@BenOchart yes. 😄✅
👍😎 Your tank’s have always looked like fish floating in air. Going to look into Pinky Floss and those refillable cartridges.
Thank you
I use mecanical filtration to clear bacterial bloom and small particules
Hey ben. The 300 looks amazing. When is the drift 🪵 wood. ? Going in
The drift wood will be going in the 210 with the South Americans in about a month.

Hey Ben, great video as always. ...quick question...which version of the inkbird temperature controller do you use?
I’m currently using TruTemp controllers and a heavy duty one I got from Jehmco
Thank you for the information and quick response

API Accu Clear is good as well.
I use poly fil. Poly filter. Chemi blue. And purigen. 💯. Tank is crystal clear 💦
the high hat in the background music , tap tap tap tap , had me crawling around under my desk aquarium looking for drips........
LOL

Great filtration would be my guess 😀👍🏻
Isn’t seachem Matrix for bacteria cultivation? You said it’s to remove chemicals from treatments
Matrix carbon - go here: seachem.com/matrixcarbon.php
Purigen looks like activated carbon to me , I dont see the reason to pay 3 times the price, can you enlighten us?
What filters are you using on your 300
A 40 gallon sump with 2 Sicce 5.0 sincra pumps and a Fluval FX-6 with a pre-filter
UV sterilizers work great to clear water
I think I’ll try one out when I get into discus.
Hey ben. You ever gonna do a chiclids and suds. Again? 🍺. 🐠
Yes, no date yet, but I will.
FYI seachem states to not throw out matrix as it's considered a bio media and does not exhaust
They have an activated carbon product called Matrix. Different from their matrix bio filter media product. Look it up.
