Good topic. Over the years I have found cloudy water arises when the organics or ammonia load increases substantially. More fish, fish getting larger, overcleaning filter media, overfeeding to name a few. Best prevention in my observation is to have filter media with the highest surface area and a lot of it. The bacteria involved in the nitrogen cycle multiply very fast (exponential growth) and can grow with an increasing organics/ammonia load very quickly (hours not days). BUT, they require media surface area to expand their population as the waste levels grow.
I manage clear water: ▪canister, ▪5 times per hour turnover, ▪and periodically adding beneficial bacteria supplements, to help break down waste in the aquarium. Thank you Ben! 101
Thanks Ben. Your channel is a really good example of a "win - win" situation for both you and your viewers. I've also learned a heck of a lot from other viewers comments.
If your tank is new and one day it's all cloudy, that's actually a good sign because it means it's cycling. Bacterial blooms are part of the process. If it gets cloudy after many months or years, you may have had a bacteria die off...it's always good to keep bacteria in a bottle handy for this... always use an ammonia detoxifier during these times to protect your fish from dying due to ammonia spikes.
Having a cloudy water issue at the moment so this video was well timed. I believe my problem is over cleaning even though I'm following the same maintenance schedule I've done for almost a year on the same tank. I think I just went too far over the last couple of water changes 🤣 i just need to have patience in think. Thanks Ben 👍
Im tellin u now w all the yrs i have in fishkeeping even w heavy filtration & using purigen those r def all contributing factors but the main reason ur tanks r so clear is the fact that u never overstock ur tanks which is common thing especially w cichlids
Good video. I was showing a friend a video of my aquarium at a Christmas party recently. He said, “I can’t believe how clear the water is, it looks like they’re floating in air.” I told him I couldn’t have done it without my buddy Ben Ochart. Over filtration is the key. I see your Eyebiter is acting like an Eyebiter, yikes. Looks like he’s claimed the center of the tank and has all the others hemmed up at the ends. Territorial little buggers AC’s are. You have one fish in there I’ve never seen before. It’s got the opal in color body with the red fins?? I gots to have one please point me in the right direction. Absolutely Stunning fish. Not that all the others aren’t stunning as well. Well, keep on making the videos and I’ll keep on watching them.
Ben...in the case of a new tank... if one is using a product like Pinky Floss in the HOB, when it comes time to service that filter, would replacing that floss not cause you to lose beneficial bacteria that would present in that floss? Or will there already be enough beneficial bacteria elsewhere to not be concerned about creating an ammonia spike. This of course is assuming the tank has fully cycled.
I'm in the process of setting up 125 gallon tank and I'm planning on putting frontoaes in there and I would just wondering how many should I put in 125 gallon
I am new, i have 30 gallons tank with 10 tropical fish. If i clean the aquarium after 2weeks 25% water change what i want to put in the water and how much?
Thanks for the tips, my tank is clear during the day but after feeding time my Pearl cichlid really 'stirs things up' water quality measures fine so might look at applying some of your suggestions 🙂
We all go through this...my tank looks pristine until it's feeding time...I'm also using Xtreme which, while great food, it breaks up very easy and is all over the tank.
@@BenOchart summer here in Aus starting to get some hot days. Needed to up oxygen to one of my tanks just from the change In temperature. Water also went cloudy for a day cleared up over night.

Three aquaclear 110s on a 125. Large cichlids . Easy clean plus purigen, crystal clear!

Over filtration. Is always a good thing. I hsve a fx 4. On my 55 gallon. And i use purigan and cheme blue. Water stays clear. 🐠

Hi Roland! When in the video does that fish appear. I’ll identify him for you.
He swims from left to right @ 0.33 seconds into it. Just as you say the word pristine.
?????😀

That is definitely the one, thank you. Stunning fish.

Sponge filters do a great job as well

Good Morning From Texas, Guppy Lover
How do you get rid of white bits in your from fish tank from Sharon Finnegan
Hello,i put 3d background in my tank my water is cloudy.what can i do?
I took off my hang in the filter and installed a canister filter, water is always clear now.
It is actually called Quilt Batting and some bags come in Crib size or Queen size so not really called Crib Batting.

You could try a sponge filter or maybe hob with poly fil
I love pinky floss
I filter my 125 with a fx6 & a fx4 filter. 😁😁😁
Seachem Clarity is good
Soon you’ll have Vinny the venustus 2.0 in that tank as the boss 😆
He’s growing fast and his blaze is on fire 🤣😀👍🏻
I NEED THE PINK FLOSS! Throw them links up so you get a hit too brotha
It’s available at my Amazon store: www.amazon.com/shop/benochart
@@BenOchart Pink crap ordered, thank you!
@@LOLWTFBBQz "Pink crap..." LOL!
Guppies like clear water too
If you have a cloudy new tank and are waiting for it to clear, can you go ahead and add fish?
A drop in oxygen can also cause cloudy water as some bacteria can die. Say due to temperature spike/kids turn off air pump lol.
Interesting point. This time of year people install heaters and increase average temp.

@@farmerjoe6908 BB loves O2. Makes sense.
Over cleaning can definitely cause a bacterial bloom. It’s a mistake I make often and I never seem to learn.
I feel that a lot of people are under filtered and feed to much
I left the lights on to much
