Lisa, you and John did a fantastic job on this video!! I can't wait to see the rest of the series!! My sweet JJ, Jaws Junior, passed the other day. Before I buy another Betta (Bay-tuh, yeah- I know), I want to tear down the entire tank, remove the Ludwigia shrub growing up the blinds and across the counter, and start over! Once I'm settled, I'll be picking out one of your boys! Thanks and Best fishes to you and John!
Every day I do 1 hr maintenance. 5&10 gal. Girl with 1 BETTA in each tank. 🆘 Sos.. why slime 🤔😭 11/2021. At seven 0 yrs old my 🐟🐠 bring Joy.

Wish there had been guides like this when I Started back in the mid 70's, then again there wasn't even Internet back then. LOL. Great for entertainment value for us oldies. Keep up the great work guys.
I vaguely remember Fritz had little pamphlets in the pet store, and yes several hours at the public library, even checked-out a few books about Aquariums.
Yes🙌
@@MerkDolf I used to have Dr. Axelrod's mini atlas of aquarium fishes.
I loved it.
I started in 2003 as a 10 year old and still made the mistakes all the way through 2012. Lol
Colin, man You're a legend! 50 years in the hobby, hats off sir 💚🌿
On the topic of lighting, you can have the light on for 12 hours a day, for example, if you divide the photo periods with a dark spell of 2 to 4 hours half way through the day. This allows the plants to go into a brief rest and the water to build up co2.
Hmmm... Maybe I should set my lights to 8-hours rather than 12.
I was so glad I had researched this when I set up my first 5 gallon tank. It was also my first ever planted tank. I just kept telling myself this is a good bacteria the cloudy water will go away. I cycled my tank before I added my betta. He has been doing swimmingly since, I've had him. 15 months now. Monet is a happy bachelor.
Most bachelors are happy LOL
...oh, about my post a few seconds ago. Lisa, you are awesome and have helped me so much with your videos during the past couple of years (John, you're not so bad yourself). I am 75 years old and first got into the hobby at age 9 for just about three years. I picked it up again about three years ago and have been rocking it ever since. The changes in filtration make things so much easier and much more fun. Thank you for what you guys do. I look to you for new information every time i go online.
OMG! That red, white, blue Beta between the topics is absolutely stunning and I want him now!!!!💜💜💜
The dummies guide is a great idea. Will help loads of new fish keepers and the hobby in general and it is easy to follow and understand. I leave cloudy water take its coarse but do regular water tests to monitor
I got left with taking care of my oldest daughter's betta and your videos have been a life saver. Very informative and entertaining as well😆😆. I like how simple you keep it and the humor just makes it great. I recommend anyone getting into aquariums to watch your videos.
When I first got my tank, I had major issues with ammonia and the KH,GH & PH. The two best things I did was added crushed coral (AKA Aragonite) and I bought a UV Filter. Within a few days, the ammonia was down to zero and the other parameters came into line. My water has been crystal clear since. When it starts to look a little foggy, I plug the UV Filter back in and by the next day, crystal clear again!!
Thanks! I will start with the Aragonite. I am not comfortable with my numbers of late. I may then pick up a UV filter. They are significantly less expensive than they once were.
I love these guides so much😂 You guys are so great to have on a play while I do tank maintenance at home. They help me to stay away from being lazy even if my day has not been a great one😁👍 Thank you both for all of your work!
Glad we can keep you entertained during water changes 🙂
@@rootsnwhiskers8351 you guys are nice
great job doing lots of work you do not have to keep it up if u dont want to u deserve a rest!
I want to say thank you for your channel and all of the raw, real information you give! I've had a tank of platys for years, once the last passed I still had an aquarium with a pleco and anubias plant. After several months I started a new tank with 2 baby Oscars and a young severum. I have a quarantine tank with a new blue acara I just got as well getting ready for the big tank. I've learned a lot of great tips and information from your channel, making me feel confident in my fishkeeping and decisions. Thank you!!
You all are 1 of 3 reasons(Bob is #2🤫😜) why I made it as long as I have in this fish keeping kinda life! The ways you both explain things keeps things so simple and easy to retain! I wish I had used more patience years ago when I first started my first tank. I used so many unnecessary chemicals when it was going through its first of many other nitrogen cycles. Maybe you all can do a video on the do's and don'ts when cleaning a planted aquarium for some of the newbies ? I know how, but maybe there's some who don't? Thanks again you two!! 🥰
This is an AWESOME video! Especially the very beginning where Lisa says to wait on the cloudiness of a new (er) tank and see if the bacterial bloom settles. These videos are so helpful.
My tank has been cycling for one week and the bacteria bloomed all over the wood pieces. I am struggling to be patient with it because my instincts want me to go in and brush it all away.
You guys are fantastic. Watched y'all when I started my nano 5 gallon, and then when I moved up to my 10 gallon. Now me and my dad are planning a larger community tank for his house next year. I'm trying to convince him to get a 40 gallon breeder, haha!
Lol, dude I'm acing these tutorials. I've been in the hobby for 5 months and I'm happy to get some positive confirmation i have learned from my mistakes.
Meaning I just get to put a ✔ on things I'm doing right. Thank you kgt
I would suggest that those wanting to set up a larger tank go for a marine ready tank. You place a sump tank down below the tank and tank water overflows back into the sump and it gets pumped back up to the tank. This setup skims the water surface keeping it oxygenated. The real beauty of the set up is you can place one or more filter socks down in the sump. You can get them in common sizes of 50 to 300 microns. The 200 micron socks will even filter algae out of the water leaving it crystal clear. As far as filtration goes shoot for three to four times the tank volume in flow per hour.
Keep up the dummies guide it’s so good can’t wait for next weekend!
Thanks for the great information i started my first aquarium a couple months ago and have been watching your videos since day one of the aquarium you've been a great help and im looking forward to all the amazing content in the future
The first aquarium I ever set up was after doing some work for the guy who owned a local aquarium shop, nothing huge and fancy but well kept and cared for. Good selection of both fresh and saltwater plus a cool McCaw Parrot he had as a store mascot of sorts. He helped me out to understand a lot before diving in luckily.
You two are great and so real! Thanks for the suggestions!
A little quick fix when you have a lot of really small particles floating around is to use Acurel-F. It makes the particles stick together so your filter can catch them. It will make your water cloudy for about an hour or two then it becomes crystal clear.
This is only a temp fix and something I only do occasionally. When I do it, its usually a sign that I need to clean/replace my polishing pad. In other words, the pad is clogged and can't get the super small particles, but when Acurel-F makes them clump together the pad can grab them.
Thanks for sharing this tip 🙂
I remember something like that in the 90s.
After doing everything I was supposed to do, I recently got a cloudy tank. I am sure I overdid something. At any rate, I was going to get a bunch of stuff I THOUGHT would help. My local independent reunited me with the Acurel F, something I had not used in more than 20 years. EXCELLENT!
Yes, I highly recommend
This was great!! You two make it entertaining and teachable. I love it.
Great channel guys 👍... I have been fish 🐠 keeping for 7 years now and am still learning new stuff all the time.. Thank you.. Respect from the UK 🇬🇧
Yes to everything shared; great advice! I do like though adding Seachem Pristine between feedings (I do not feed daily) no more than adding Pristine 1x weekly. My tanks are established and always crystal clear. However after adding Pristine it glistens like diamonds. I also believe, from experience, Pristine helps get rid of plant/fish waste if there's any lying around. Not a substitute for regular water changes/maintenance though!
I appreciate your well-made videos that are FILLED with such USEFUL info, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!
Had my first aquarium nightmare last night. All of the sudden my tank was filled with fish and they were all nippers! This hobby is taking over my life! 🤣
😬
Fish keeping dreams took over my dreamworld while I was in the hobby too lol😂
I'm a brand new fish keeper. This video has been very helpful. I have struggled with a cloudy tank. Thank you!
Can I sway from the topic of this dummy guide and say, the betta that separates the segments is absolutely stunning! I hope that's yours, not stock footage, and you kept him, cause WOW!
How’d I ever miss this one? Shared with my kids for fish keeping and life. Loved it.
Great video. I have never had a cloudy tank. But I do whatever I need to to keep my fish safe n healthy.
You have to enjoy the hobby, in my opinion. I still love it after 20 years. 💜 Another great informative video btw.
Thanks for watching 🙂
When I started keeping fish we used spun glass or angel hair floss for the filter. I was so happy when polyester fiber fill came out. No more picking glass fibers out of my fingers! Things are better today.
Great advice. I have a 5 gal. tank and have been fighting the cloud. My tank is new only a month old. Thank you very much.
Great guides by the way. Excellent advice for beginners and those who have been successful fish keepers, but who may just think, oh, I didn’t know that, or more likely, I forgot about that.
The perfect video for me 😂👍😁
Your house sounds a lot like my house I just have a Calvin instead of a John 😂😂
You did a great job on this video explaining all the causes of cloudy water!! This is one that I will share and help others to help them with their fish keeping!!! It helps me a lot too 😁👍 Thank you for sharing your expertise!! I hope you and your family are having a wonderful weekend! 👍🌿🐟🌿💚
Lisa you look FABULOUS!!! Love the fun music too.
Thank you both again for all of the great content.
Thank you both. Really enjoy your videos and you are both a class act!
This is a great series !
The “layman’s language,” well chosen analogies, and new animations are excellent.
Thanks,

Love the dummies guides. They are full of helpful information. Thank you!
Thank you Lynne 🙂
Awesome video, thanks guys!
Love this! Aguariums, like all pets and living things we own, have to be responsibly cared for. As you just pointed out with truth and humor, don't get any living thing ( dog, cat, fish, bird, plant), ANY living thing and bring it home, and not expect to care for it. Please do some research, ask questions of people with experience, and there's a great thing called U tube where lots of experienced people are ready and willing to give you information about caring for whatever living thing you bring home. Find out the care involved before you buy something. Thank you KG Tropicals again for Truth and humor.
Loving these series!!💙
I run a 75 gallon filter on my 55 gallon tank with 3 electric cichlids, 2 Bumbles, blue, and 2 sucker fish. I was slightly feeding them to much and backed off. Tank looks fantastic!
An acquaintance of mine said it best. If you want a tank with no water changes, then get a reptile!
we change water becase of poop, reptile poop is nasty! there is just no getting away from the do do
@@DeminicusSCA for smaller reptiles a bioactive terrarium will make poop scooping way less regular
I actually don’t do water changes. Plants. Magical cleaners.
I use an under gravel filter only and Never have to change the water. Stays crystal clear. Live plants are the key
@@bretthines6893Exactly! Plants are essential for nitrate build up and I can't get my head around why someone would go into all the trouble of fishkeeping only to never read into plants
I love your videos!! Always informative and creative. The lazy guy skit was hilarious 😂😄
Great video! In all the years I've had fish, I've never had cloudy water. Algae and the white algae bloom on new driftwood...yeah. Guess I lucked out on that.. 😃🍄✌
This video was both super informative and fun to watch , great job , I think I’ll subscribe!
I run Chemipure green and Purigen in one of the trays of my Oase Biotherm 350 canister filter along with Matrix and sponges in the other trays. I do a 20% water change weekly and clean the pre-filter. Every six weeks I do a complete filter cleaning and replace the Chemipure and Purigen. My 65 gallon is heavily planted with good flow from a small Tunze power head. The community tank is heavily populated with 50 small fish and Corys. Maintenance is about 60-90 minutes weekly, but the results are rewarding and make the hobby fun.Been running clean and clear for two years.
I did start a tank and overlooked maintenance it needs but after how I learned to maintain it I just began loving cleaning my tank, cleaning algea, changing water and just taking care of the tank in general. Now I might even be spending a but too much time cleaning it out because I love to do it but at least my tank is PRISTINE
Excellent info and very entertaining with the lazy guy !! You and John get five stars !! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Fantastic video! Clear, concise, informative, and I can see the passion you guys have. Especially like the part about being lazy. You get out what you put into it like anything else in life.
Love the humor and content.
This was a very well put together video guys. Great Job 👏🏼. I need to get that blue filter material and polyfil stuff

🔥I follow every idea or tip y'all gave and I have a beautiful aquarium. Thank you so much 🔥
I've been watch yall for going on six months. Yall have REALLY helped me out alot with setting up my 26 gallon.
In this vid though I'm getting some Fred Durst vibes 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Lisa, thanks for simplifying this easy task! You really put lazy John in his place, lol.
Great information for me.
After my betta died, I cleaned the 10g out really well along with the plants, etc. Ive had 4 glofish for about 1wk but had to remove the nipper.
But 1 is territorial of exactly half the tank. I put in more plants than I wanted to on his side so the other 2 had more of a chance to swim every where. I know I should have at least 4 or 5 but 1 was stressing the other 3
I don't think I'll be able to get 2 or 3 more any time soon. Will redecorating help ?
You guys are Awesome! Keep it up. I really enjoy the content.
Thank you Mike 🙂
I like to use over the tanks sumps with lots of red rock with a few fast growing plants in it and I’ve never had an issue with cloudy water.
Very helpful guide..Thanks for the video.
Great video Lisa. Looking forward to the next segment. 😀

What a great presentation thanks!!
Lol, having "a john" in the house. I know what you mean. Definitely had an algae bloom before. Wish i had seen this before that day. Thanks Lisa
Thanks for watching Didi 🙂
I have a 5 gallon and a 20 gallon. The filter on the 20 gallon crapped out and it was a while before I was able to get a new one, so it was almost always cloudy. What I did with that one was constant water changes to keep it from getting too cloudy (also got some live plants for it). With the 5 gallon, it's in front of a window, tends to be kinda cloudy, so I do water changes once in a while (it also has a betta, which prefers cloudier/darker water)
Thank you for the uploads you have inspired me to start my own RUclips channel 🙏🏽 I now have 25 Red Cherry Shrimp and a few are pregnant 🤩✨
Thanks to this video, I discovered Seachem Purigen. It is worth every single penny. At this point, I'm convinced Seachem can do absolutely no wrong. I can't thank you enough!!
I also find sometimes a thin buildup of algae film on the glass can mess with a perfect view... or the pump splash causing buildup under the top glass and green filtering the light source.
I replaced the top cover of my tank with a sheet of glass almost to the pumps. Then it was just a matter of taking the glass off for a quick clean and flipping it for replacement. Then a couple LED lights at one end with the other end of tank slightly shadowed. One LED bank on during day and 2 for prime time at night.
My biggest fish loss was my 16 year old Pleco. It kept the inside of my 50 gallon tank with 6 goldfish crystal clear for over a decade.
A few times I really thought my tank was done for. But then I found where the catfish dug thru the sand to the loose clay base and it's just red dust on the glass again. Fish seem to love the dirt and debris
these guides are great
I was waiting for John to do a walk through eating Cheetos and dropping crumbs, lol! 😂
If I could've only got that on video lol its not like it hasn't happened before 😂
omg, missed opportunity!!! LOL!
Keeping a much lower bioload than what I "could" fit in my tank. (50 ember tetras, 15 cories and 6 BNs in 400L)
Running oversized biomedia sponge and cleaning it before it clogs up.
Have a school of corys on a sand substrate to ensure anything that settles on the bottom gets whirled back up into the watercolumn and by extention finds its way into the filter.
Running excessive light and enough plants to consistently outcompete any algae for nutrition.
My maintainance consists mostly of hacking back the plants. That and the mandatory rinsing of filters and water changes. I generally find my system to be more stable the less I touch the tank.
awesome video always watching your videos learned a lot from your videos thank you and your wife .JD
Lisa is so pretty and great at explaining. Thanks
Way back 50 years ago, I remember spun fiberglass as a filter medium. My friends and I chipped in and bought a diatom filter. If anyone's tanks got really cloudy, run the diatom for half an hour to an hour, and the water would be crystal clear. It was rumored that it could even pull ick out of the water.

fishiemon Thanks for watching 🙂
If it is a new tank, I just let it run its course. The heterotrophic bacteria, the cloudiness, appears when you make big changes too fast. In new tanks, that is basically happening every day. If it is a mature tank and I have exhausted my usual methods of higher flow and prefilters, I will hook up a high flow UV sterilizer which almost always works in 3 days or less. If it recurs, I know there is a systemic issue in the tank. If it is gone for good, it was just a fluke.
I have a 125 with a turtle and several fish, and I have to do WC's on the regular. Purigen really helped with the clarity of the water, but regular cleanings are what keep the important stuff at bay. Ph, nitrites, nitrates, and the like.
Great video
great video, you just earned my subscription
I started sometimes in the 90's as a kid, my smaller tanks didn't have even filter, just plants an regular maintenance. The thing is, I would recommend a beginner to get a big foam cube and a powerhead to go with it, mask it with plants, regular maintenance and so on. Another thing, enough of light, as a teenager I couldn't convince my parents I need more than 30 Watts per 50 gallons (200 l) with plants. Live plants are good for fish (usually).
Nowadays my concerns are particles stirred after feeding and whatever floats on top of water. I got a skimmer for one tank and I'm getting Purigen to all filters (to remove green tinge).
