      @@BenOchart probably really easy to clean. I'm sick of dealing with my marineland c360 cannister filter. Pita when I clean it and I have to mess with it because of the issues with getting all the air purged out of it.

    On the 40 breeder, what PPI foam did you use ?
    I’m doing the same exact setup in a 40 for my 75 gallon.

      10, 20 & 20 ppi, each 4” thick from Swiss Tropicals who cut them for me.

    Hi Ben
    Can you please advise please
    I'm in the process of getting a new tank 48x30x25" ( about 550 litres) (147 usg) think thatx right ??
    Anyway after watching this video I'm now wondering if it would be better to have a small sump tank rather than my FX6 ?
    Also how do you work out what size sump you need for uour main tank ?
    Many thanks
    Steve

    • @BenOchart
      @BenOchart  2 года назад +1

      I’d use that FX-6 and a sump, like a 29 gal or 40 breeder

  • @georgewilliamssr5230
    @georgewilliamssr5230 2 года назад +2

    How do you manage your pre filter on your FX? I tried several sponges on both my FX 6 & 4. And as soon as they get a little soiled. They get sucked down flat. And collapse.

    • @BenOchart
      @BenOchart  2 года назад

      Use a more coarse filter. Medium and fine get clogged quickly.

    Hello Ben! I have an offtopic & a casual question... Do you cycle? If yes how often in a week? Let me be very honest with you, I am blown my your energy levels, it good to be fit like you and would like to know what keeps your energy levels always high.

    • @BenOchart
      @BenOchart  2 года назад

      I’m cycling less recently because it’s gotten too cold for me, so instead I’m doing indoor workouts usually with a large balance ball, along with running up steps and some light weight lifting.

      @@BenOchart Cool... Thanks for sharing that with me, ever since pandemic, life has become pathetic, lots of work load and no time for workouts... planning to go for cycling at least thrice a week just to keep the stress levels down if not they are eating me up hahaha. Thanks again see you tomorrow 😀

    Love the set up in the 40 gallon sump. The 3 sponges look like the best way to go with no baffles. Adding that extra water volume also appeals to me. I never tried a sump I use canisters and HOB filters. Do you know of a product than can add an overflow to a 125g tank that is not drilled?

    • @BenOchart
      @BenOchart  2 года назад

      Several companies make them. Just Google “overflow boxes”

    Hi Ben, I'm wondering how big of a sump filter I would need for a 56 gallon tall tank. Thank you

    • @BenOchart
      @BenOchart  2 года назад +2

      Usually I recommend sumps for larger tanks, 100 gallon on up. But that doesn’t mean they can’t or shouldn’t be used on smaller tanks. A 10 gallon would work but a 20 tall would be easier to work with and provide more water volume.

    How did you dial in your return pump flow rate to your overflow drain rate? Are the pumps adjustable?

    • @BenOchart
      @BenOchart  Год назад +1

      Pumps are not adjustable but their GPH is within the range that the overflow box is rated for. Drilled external overflow boxes come with a suggested GPH

    Ben, I'm sorry, I must have missed something in the first video. I thought the simple set up with just the 3 - 4" sponges were enough to do the filtering, no to clean with any other filters? But you are saying, a canister filtering system is still needed to run in conjunction with the sponges..?

    • @BenOchart
      @BenOchart  8 месяцев назад

      No. It's just my preference and I always like a running back-up in case another system fails. Truth is that a simple sump with only sponges could do a fine job all by itself.

  • @jimcoughlin4057
    @jimcoughlin4057 11 месяцев назад

    why do you have the canister? I am planning on setting up a very similar discus system with just the Poret foam. Do you think I need the canister too?

    • @BenOchart
      @BenOchart  11 месяцев назад

      I would need more info to answer like size of tank, how heavily will it be stocked, feeding and maintenance routines etc to really answer your question. All that aside, I like having a back up. If one fails or is being worked on, the other one keeps working.

    Be very careful with that 1 way valve , it does not work as how you thought it would , the trickling water will still allow a small siphon to continue sucking water from the main tank to the sump , you gonna need a siphon breaker on your return pipe outlet .

    • @BenOchart
      @BenOchart  2 года назад +3

      Yes. One way valves are not total back-siphon solutions. They can fail, leak and not totally shut down when duty. This is why I keep outputs right at the surface and drill a small hole just below the water line of the hook on return in the 210. That breaks and stops the siphon.
