    its such a shame when i see people beating others up about not being fully vegan/not being fully zero waste, as long as everyone is trying and is aware of the issue you can only do so much as an individual without it taking over your whole life

      True. I’m still not fully vegan (maybe soon), but doing pretty well, I think. I save my energy for people who are openly attacking the very idea of vegan and vegetarianism, and are being entitled to the point that they don’t care about other living things. We shouldn’t be fighting amongst ourselves when there are far greater things to focus on!

    Have you tried cooking chickpeas with baking soda? I did yesterday and my mind was blown. Even if you use canned ones and if you boil them with baking soda for 20min all the skins disappear and I've never made hummus so smooth before. Love these videos ((:

      I like to use the chickpea water for my homous. It makes it so creamy and you use something that would normally be wasted

  • @nymeria8852
    @nymeria8852 5 лет назад +5

    If you intend to cook more from scratch with a low waste approach, I think you would love to have an Instant Pot. It makes cooking the basics so much easier, faster and cheaper (less electricity used). I bought mine 2 years ago and use it everyday. You can batchcook chickpeas, lentils, all the beans you wish, potatoes, rice, make porridge, apple sauce, jams etc... It's also easy to make soy milk, vegan yogurt or make your dough rise faster. I even make my own tempeh with it. It's the one appliance I don't want to do without.

    • @caramelushca
      @caramelushca 5 лет назад

      Hi, what recipe do you use for your tempeh? And can it be done plastic free? :) Love my Instant Pot as well!

    • @nymeria8852
      @nymeria8852 5 лет назад +1

      I mix two recipes: the one from veganlovlie (they have a website and a youtube) and the one from full of plants (type instant pot tempeh in google). The important thing is to find a good tempeh starter. I tried making it in glass containers and it worked but the tempeh was a bit looser than when I tried it with ziploc bags. For my next try I'm going to press it more firmly and use a makeshift lid with holes to keep it that way during incubation. If it's still on the looser side, I'll resign myself to using plastic bags, reusing them several times. It's super economical to make your own. Here in France they ask 4€ for 200g. For that amount, I can make well over 1kg of homemade tempeh. It freezes well too.

    • @caramelushca
      @caramelushca 5 лет назад

      @@nymeria8852 Thank you so much! Where do you get your tempeh starter? It costs about 5€ in Romania as well, and I can only find it in one store and not all the time :D

    • @nymeria8852
      @nymeria8852 5 лет назад

      I buy this one: www.tempeh.info/starter/tempeh-starter.php I always choose the 75g packet. Lasts forever and great price.

    I think Morrisons might be a good idea. They have a scheme where if you have meat or fish (I know you're vegan, so this wouldn't apply to you) you can take your own container to reduce the plastic waste. They also usually have a loose version of fresh fruit and veg so you can use your own bags. Also the loose stuff is usually cheaper, and they do wonky fruit and veg which is always cheaper, so it's pretty good.

    • @lorrenwtf
      @lorrenwtf 5 лет назад

      Sainsbury's now do this for the meat and fish counters too! I think possibly for the deli too?
      I agree with Morrisons loose fruit and veg selection though. It's probably the best I've seen in any of the main supermarket chains.

    • @MollyMalone1983
      @MollyMalone1983 5 лет назад +1

      In Germany supermarkets are not allowed to take your container over the counter in the meat/dairy section because of possible cross-contamination. I saw a video where a supermarket found a "loophole" in providing a metal tray where you can put your container on and then they can take it over the counter and fill it up, and afterwards sterilize the tray. I thought it was such a great idea!

  • @nataliaalvarez4316

    As you said in the video i find it very important to remind ourselves that sometimes we are not going to be the "perfect" person in terms of sustainability. What is important to keep trying and be kind to ourselves. Also its great that people like you (who reach a huge audience) keep reminding us its ok to keep trying to improve without being hateful when we are not perfect.
    Thanks for the content. Cant wait to try some of this.

    Just wanted to give a shout out to the chickpea tuna! Since I saw this video I've made it a few times but every time had it with salad and pasta. It's so delicious and if you make it in a big batch at the start of the week you can keep it in the fridge and take some out each day for a packed lunch. Quick tip with the dried chickpeas! To save soaking and boiling them, rinse them and stick them in the slow cooker on low overnight, it does the soaking and cooking all in one go while you sleep!
    You can do this with most dried beans except red kidney beans with do need a good boiling as they will give you in upset tummy!
    Always do my chickpeas this way now!
    Also with riverford any thing they cant get local they freight by land and sea rather than by air so much lower co2 👍

    Fab video and absolutely agree that we need to be inclusive of everyone who is doing their best. I've been trying and testing plant based recipes and sharing on my blog so those new to cooking plant based know they have a recipe that works. Small steps but if a million people take them, we'll be sharing an idea around the world in no time.

      Tahini is essentially just sesame seeds, oil and salt. When making hummus, instead of tahini, you can use seeds (I have used sesame or sunflower seeds) or even cashew nuts, which we used, when we did not have any seeds or tahini at summer cottage. :D And then add more salt and oil that recipe states. :) Actually the cashew nut hummus was the best hummus I've ever had. :D

I'm flying home for the summer in a few weeks and think I will steal a few ideas here in order to try and not shop the last week and just use the stuff in my pantry; I have a lot of kidney beans, tins of tomatoes, and chickpeas!

    I love this series sooo much! I’d love to see more. I think it’s great that you’re keeping it realistic and are using the stuff that you already have. ☺️
    What you said at the end is so important. I honestly get that feeling so often of not doing enough because I still have to buy plastic at some times because as a student I don’t have the biggest budget and it can get frustrating sometimes. Also I think people who are just starting out with making more sustainable choices can get easily overwhelmed with everything you should do and then they might give up. So thank you for mentioning this problem and telling people that every change one makes is great and that we don’t have to be perfect 💕

And it is even more exciting to learn new no/low waste ideas and get recipes for my food storage of lentils, quinoa, etc :) Thanks for your positivity and inclusiveness - it genuinely is so appreciated!

    I was vegan. I'm not now but I still love watching your channel. The amount of plastic is utterly ludicrous now, especially fruit and veg from supermarkets. I hope it starts to improve soon. X

    My favourite self care is making myself a proper lunch ☺️. I make dinner for 5 people (my family) almost every night & it's stopped being enjoyable most of the time, and yet taking the time to cook or make myself lunch is still the best thing

    Love these videos. I have a vegetarian son aged 9 and I have been inspired to make more interesting meals for him that don't use meat substitutes. We had a bean chilli and a chick pea curry last week and I'm now inspired to give Riverford a try. I just wanted to make you aware your videos help lots of people in lots of different ways!

    I LOVE these videos! Even though I live in the US, the meal ideas are so great. Aldi's is my favorite, even though the amount of plastic is rough. I agree with you totally.....the easiest way to alienate people from a movement is to be judgmental to others who are doing their best. If everyone just stopped using plastic bags and water bottles alone it would make such a difference! Eliminating waste is a process, and if people make small steps and see how easy it is, they may move on to the next step and inspire others too.....why people would be so negative about people trying to make a difference one step at a time is beyond me! Keep up the good vibes! And WHERE can one find Alex's Eco > Ego sweatshirt??

    An idea for people looking to save money but who are also short on time could just freeze their bread to save it from going off as opposed to needing to make their own

    I was hospitalised with coronavirus back in June, and after that for some reason I am now unable to tolerate any animal or dairy products of any source. I have found that in following a vegan diet, I feel the best I ever have.

    In terms of plastic wastage in the UK - I heard from a Tesco delivery driver last week that they are planning on discontinuing carrier bags in about 15 weeks’ time. I’ve not been able to verify it, and have no idea if they plan to substitute paper bags or what, but if it’s true it could be that supermarkets really are trying to reduce plastic waste.

    I dont have Celiac's, but avoiding normal bread and pasta has helped in some health issues in my family. I don't eat only gluten free products but I do buy gluten free pasta and bread and they taste great.

    Try sourdough bread, even more low waste since you don't need the yeast sachet and I think it lasts longer - it doesn't turn into stone in one or two days

    Love this series! Plastic is an issue but so hard to avoid in the US discount shops. The stores don’t get the irony of an organic veggie life wrapped up in loads of plastic and coated cardboard.

    The low waste shop looked so cool and I looked up some in my area but then I realised I definitely don't have enough containers for all that stuff!! As I'm a student I don't really have space/money/as it's not my proper house I don't really want to buy them. So I think for me that'll be an option once I have a 'proper' house/flat

    • @MadeleineOlivia

      You don’t need containers! Just bring a bag and put them in Tupperware or reuse jars that you buy with food in them! Every time I buy a big jar I clean it out and reuse it.

    Honestly I know this is an older video but a game changer for me has been a slow cooker. Didn't soak your beans? Want some chickpeas? Just chuck them in the slow cooker on high for around 4-5 hours and bam, perfect chickpeas or kidney beans with 0 effort. I recently completed the Ration Challenge and had to use dried beans and chickpeas for that and now I'm definitely not going back, which I might have done had I not been able to just slow cook them from dried in a matter of a few hours. Also I imagine you already know this but for anyone who doesn't, I recommend black turtle beans! Very flavourful, and no soaking needed, just boil on the hob for 1h30 ^_^
