Vinegar can be a great cleaner. But do NOT use it on your quartz/marble, the acidity will etch into it, it will ruin the shine and leave watermarks. I believe it will also damage chrome and aluminium, so that's quite a lot of surfaces in my home. Diluted washing up liquid can be fabulous 👌
Can confirm. As a trained cemetery conservator that works with headstones, please do not use bleach or acidic cleaners on stone, especially marble. It causes the stone to chemically break down over time. Warm water and mild soap (like Dr. Bronners or Simple Green) with a soft sponge or cloth works best. If you do buy a cleaner for stone, ones with quaternary ammonia as the active ingredient have been scientifically proven to be the least damaging over time.

The tub in the sink is a British thing. We don't use them in Spain either. My boyfriend (who is from England) made us buy one in England and bring it to Spain 😂 I have to say that I love it!
Yes to running the dishwasher (and the washing machine) on eco mode for everyday use! But also do a hot cycle every now and then to properly disinfect and thereby prevent bild up of funky and smelly stuff. Eco mode is often made to mimic the cleaning power (re: dirt) of given temperature by having longer soaking time but often doesn't actually reach the temperature on the label. And taking good care of your appliances (read: hot cycle and an empty run with some citric acid every now and then) is a matter of sustainability IMHO.
Eco mode is not necessarily eco. It needs to be researched according to your washing machine, but for some it either consumes more electricity or doesn't wash well, which then pushes people to wash again. No, it's not the case with every washer, but it's useful to note that unfortunately not all appliances with an eco option do a good job.

My favorite vegan natural pillow filling is kapoc. I have a store locally that you buy the pillow and filling separately so you can have them as firm or soft as you want. And because it’s plant fibre, if the filling gets old/gross/flat you can just compost it.
Kapok was used years ago for stuffing things , pillows everything . I had a big bag of the stuff , ready to re stuff or add more to a pillow etc. My Mum used it too (I am 64 😂) , great stuff, was eventually replaced by the fibrefill stuff used today .
Love cleaning with vinegar! I like to let the cleaning vinegar soak with left over citrus peel for some time before adding it into the cleaning solution, which does get rid of the need for adding essential oils (which are not that sustainable) without sacrificing on a somewhat nice(ish) scent. It ups the cleaning power too (oil does desolve oil). Also, a drop of dish soap makes for an easier distribution of the cleaning agent and for even better cleaning power.
It makes me happy to see someone vacuuming their hard floors and not just the carpets. My bestie thinks vacuuming instead of sweeping with a broom is just the silliest, so I get a lot of grief for it.
I live in the U.S. When I was growing up my mom had a large kitchen sink which was wasteful and impractical to fill with water so she always had a plastic tub to fill with soapy water to wash the dishes. She set it in the sink. Then she rinsed the dishes under the faucet over on the open part of the sink and set them on the counter to drain. Even though I have a modern split sink I still use my mom’s method; I put the plastic tub in one side, rinse over the narrow open part of that side, and have my dish drainer resting in the other sink. The plastic tub protects dishes from getting banged around against the hard sink. I must tell you how much I LOVE your beautiful kitchen.
Thanks for sharing these tips Madeleine, will be switching to the vinegar bathroom cleaner once I run out of the current one I have (method brand). A tip I want to share in regards to purchased cleaning products is that if they contain aqua/water you can make them go further by watering them down by adding extra water, sometimes up to 50% and they still work, a lot of them are quite concentrated straight out of the bottle (a friend who used to be a hotel cleaner shared that with me and it’s true, you can get 2 bottles for 1).

Hello ! Just to help you a bit : natural stones can’t be cleaned with white vinegar (or vinegar in general) it would stain them. The acid would just eat the stone over time. If not right away. I would suggest equal parts of water and a kind of soap (or 2/3 of water). I like black soap, castille soap is good too because it helps protect the stone too ☺️ I hope it helped 🙂
True that! But quartz itself does and some according countertops are sometimes made to withstand acidic cleaners, so it's always worth checking in with the supplier of your particular countertop. Personally, I would nevertheless avoid any highly acidic or alkaline cleansers on natural stone, just to be safe. Just use some pH-neutral soap and water.
Yes! Vinegar is bad for stone such as that. I liked the suggested mix, but if you use a little castille soap, water, and vodka (or rubbing alcohol)that will also work well on stone! I use vodka for cleaning all the time.

Worktops quartz: soapy cloth washing up liquid and polish with dry e cloth… worked for 10 years on dark tops. Now I have rubbish laminate in my new house (for now) and enjoy method all purpose just for the smell and a change as you can’t see the streaks…
Yeah the tub in the sink is unusual in the US, although my dad sometimes uses one (but he's Canadian). We usually have plugs in the drain instead or don't make a sink of water, and just wash under running water. The tub is a much better idea!

Honestly, I’ve found that TikTok is an amazing go too for natural cleaning recipes! We’re suffering with a lot of condensation in our flat and that creates black mould. I found out Bi-carb, white vinegar and tea tree oil (10 drops, the rest I just eyeball) kills the black mould spores and so far, it’s barely come back! I’d recommend for anyone suffering with it.
I love this! I do have a weird question, as an American we still wash things in the sink without water overuse...but do you not just have a plugging drain sieve/ drain blocker combo? That way you fill up one side of your sink with water and dish soap with the amount you need- no need for a tub at all.

Here is what I use for natural stone counter tops : - 1 part rubbing alcohol/ 3 parts water, a couple of squirts of dish liquid and 10 drops of essential oils.

I’m an American and I love my tub! It really helps also if you need to use the sink and you can easily move the dishes out. Also it keeps your sink cleaner.
As a Brit living in Canada, it is not the norm here to have a 'washing up bowl' but I did buy one here as it saves so much water than filling up a large sink, we are careful with water as we have to haul our water from a local well and fill up our 1800 gallon underground tank every few weeks, so it makes you more contious not to waste it, but at least it's free!
To me it makes sense…not every thing should be put in the dishwasher! Also we have older crockery and China that is not dishwasher safe. As someone from the US I find it weird that people will just run water, not use those items, or even worse will just dispose of anything that doesn’t go I the dishwasher.
I also use vinegar/water to clean my house! The only difference is that I use a little bit of bleach/water to soak the shower for 3 min and then rinse/scrub it with dish soap/water. Loved the video!!
Hi. If you don't like spiders use peppermint oil and water in a spray bottle and go round the corners of your house and the front door and back . I haven't had any in the house for the past year.x
Can say this does work spiders seem to hate peppermint, there are so many essential oils that can do amazing things and are far better then poisons or chemical sprays.
I'd love to hear more cleaning ideas! I use the same cleaners throughout (I love lemon and lavendar essential oils), with the exception of Method's lime and seasalt spray. It smells divine and it's great for around pets too. (I use it to clean up acidents.) I'm a bit more liberal with my olive oil polish because I like the shine. I put baking soda (bicarbonate powder). The only thing I want to replace is my laundry detergent. I'm running through the last of it now. Great video showing how much you don't need when it comes to cleaning!
You spurred me in to whizz around my kitchen worktops this afternoon. I use damp towels to polish mirrors too. I use a spray bottle of diluted washing liquid for most cleaning jobs. I think using a plastic washing up bowl is a British thing. I have a large ceramic sink and I wouldn’t be without mine!
I'm American, and I don't have a specific tub like you do, but I use one of the larger items I'm planning to wash (pots/saucepans usually) for the same purpose. Get it mostly clean, then fill it partway with soapy water and use it to wash the other stuff (glasses, etc.). Then finish cleaning that bigger pot at the very end. That way there's not a tub living in the sink, but also doesn't waste as much water.
Don’t know if you have the Full Circle brand over there, but they make scouring pads made of walnut shells. I use them as just my regular dish sponge. They’re really great! As far as the difference in using the tap running throughout the process or filling a tub or one side of the sink with water is more to do with upbringing than location. I was raised to keep the water running so that I’m always rinsing in clean water. I know others who do one side of the sink filled with water and soap. My best friend just wets the sponge, scrubs everything, then rinses under a tiny trickle of water on and off as needed through the process. I think her method saves the most water. No constant running water, and no filling anything with water. Just a trickle when needed to rinse. I have read that the difference between American and British dish washing is that Americans rinse off all the soap before putting stuff in the drying rack and that Brits leave suds on the dishes after rinsing in the soapy water. Not sure if that’s true or actually common over there, but I’ve read it a couple times in the past.

On one of your old videos you talked about cleaning products I mentioned "Scandish Home" you tuber.. She has loads of natural cleaning product recipes also for the toilet. I also mentioned "Everdrop" which I use a lot.. They have eco friendly cleaning products.. Tablets or powers you dissolve, that come in paper. So take no storage space either. Great video 👍👌😊
I’m an American and the dish tub in the sink was normal in my family but I don’t think they are extremely common. Most American homes have double sinks and people will just use one of the halves to wash or wash without filling up either the sink or tub. The tub is most common in homes with a single large sink. Vinegar will etch stone over time. I think the special cleaners for stone counters are probably just pH balanced for the stone.
I live on the Isle of Wight, we have a refill community who come round in an electric van. We just leave our empty bottles by the side door. They refill them from the van , job done x
Never use any vinegar on your worktop! I am in UK too. I recommend Spruce (from Amazon or there website) - the multi ourpose cleaner. Its zero waste and it’s good in quarz!

Deretter skrubber du oppvasken som normalt, men bare skyll dem etterpå ved å dyppe dem i karet. Hvis du har veldig skitten eller mye oppvask, må du kanskje skifte vannet halvveis eller noe. Hey, very nice video, very inspiring to change some stuff in my cleaning routine. I just want to add that my dishwasher uses about 9l of water during 1 eco cycle. And I dont have any special dishwasher. I think that you can't wash all dishes in sink using only 9 liter of water. I think that it is the most eco way to wash and I barely use sink to wash my dishes.
Vinegar is very acidic and can cause quartz to discolour...do not use bleach ... either... Normal antibacterial dish soap is ideal. And be wiped over and cleaned off easily. Nothing abrasive. Ammonia. Sharp objects and alkaline cleaners. Great job ... X
I've just started using a product called soapberries in the washing machine. There is enough in the bag for 90+ washes and cost me $A16.95. They give a nice fresh sort of smell.
I loved the video. I've been slacking lately on staying low waste and sustainable with my cleaning so thus video was perfect timing. I'd love to see content on cleaning the appliances. They are sometimes more difficult to clean so for me it's more tempting to stray to harsher cleaners for them. Also I don't have any pets at the moment but some videos on how you Stat sustainable for the pets food, bedding, litter, shampoos, leash/ harness for robbie would be interesting
i always thought the short (one hour) cycles on your dishwasher and washing machine use way more water and energy .... is this not true? i mean this is why the eco cycles are always super long
I think it depends on the particular maschine. When we bought a dishwasher the instruction manual listed all of the different cycles and how much energy and water they use. The eco cycle and 30min cycle used approximately as much energy and water, so I always use the 30min one, since the eco cycle takes like 4 hours :D So i'd recommend checking the manual :)
I wash my clothes with just soda crystals or a eco egg. Eco zone has a great fabric softeners it's cruelty free and vegan friendly. They don't us Tallow ( animal fat) which is a animal bio product and can be found in most fabric softeners. Great video ❤

Vingear etches quartz and granite so itd be better to use rubbing alcohol and water mix which can be used for counters and windows/mirrors. And of course soapy water

Method are better than most main brands but are actually not very sustainable (5/20 as rated by ethical consumer). For laundry and cleaning products I now order in bulk - so I’m trialling the planet detox kitchen and bathroom cleaner (which is like a scrubby soap bar and works amazingly! It’s 15/20 in terms of ethics, which is a really good mark) all plastic free. For laundry I order the massive bulk containers from Miniml (they’re expensive upfront but when bought this way the per use actually comes out cheaper or the same price as the Asda smart price stuff but is super sustainable!, also 15/20. I really like the miniml almond laundry stuff. We also always wash on the eco settings and use the smol dishwasher tabs (my partner doesn’t like the idea of powder which is offered by other sustainable brands I’ve mentioned, smol score 14/20 and work better than the splosh ones I trialed before 12/20). A handy guide I use for finding sustainable items is the ethical consumer website - they’ve got product guides where they rate things in terms of sustainability (usually vegan products are always at the top as companies get points for this). So that’s helpful for looking for items that fit your budget and shopping style! We used to use vinegar but my partner hated the smell and didn’t feel like things were clean so we changed to buying eco brands
Top tip to get the essential oils to emulsify into the water and vinegar is to add some rubbing alcohol or vodka into the cleaner, just a capful will do usually
I have just discovered, Milk and More, basically your milkman. They deliver to your door, in glass bottles. No plastic, no need to drive to refill, just to your door. There is hand soap, washing up liquid, fabric softener, washing liquid, shampoo and hair conditioner. They also do oat milk and almond milk in milk bottles.
The basin in the sink, it's definitely a British thing I've been to America loads on holiday and they don't do the basin thing, they either fill the sink or keep the water running and wash that way or a dishwasher
In America we typically have a two basin sink. So the sink isn’t all open it’s split into two sections so one would be for washing the dirty dishes and be like the tub and the other for rinsing when they are clean. But I do think we Americans are wasteful and probably don’t do that and either run the faucet with water or just use the dishwasher. Now with people getting on the “farm sink” trend people are getting rid of the two basin sinks and going for the big one like you have

Pillows- Last year I bought a pillow from Ilovegrain - buckwheat filling. I have never slept so comfortably in my life, absolute sleep changer!

Honestly, I’ve found that TikTok is an amazing go too for natural cleaning recipes! We’re suffering with a lot of condensation in our flat and that creates black mould. I found out Bi-carb, white vinegar and tea tree oil (10 drops, the rest I just eyeball) kills the black mould spores and so far, it’s barely come back! I’d recommend for anyone suffering with it.
I love this! I do have a weird question, as an American we still wash things in the sink without water overuse...but do you not just have a plugging drain sieve/ drain blocker combo? That way you fill up one side of your sink with water and dish soap with the amount you need- no need for a tub at all.
Thank you for explaining the tub in the sink. I wondered what it is for. :) I am from the Czech republic (neighbor of Poland) and I have never seen it before. If I don't want to wash dishes under the running water, I pour the water directly into the sink.
Here is what I use for natural stone counter tops : - 1 part rubbing alcohol/ 3 parts water, a couple of squirts of dish liquid and 10 drops of essential oils.

I love this video! I have to say tho, be careful with putting cleaning products into glass bottles, sometimes cleaning products have ingredients that become bad or ineffective when they’re exposed to sunlight!

I’m an American and I love my tub! It really helps also if you need to use the sink and you can easily move the dishes out. Also it keeps your sink cleaner.

As a Brit living in Canada, it is not the norm here to have a 'washing up bowl' but I did buy one here as it saves so much water than filling up a large sink, we are careful with water as we have to haul our water from a local well and fill up our 1800 gallon underground tank every few weeks, so it makes you more contious not to waste it, but at least it's free!
The tub in sink is common for manyLatinx families in the US. We use ours daily which is weird to many people but it works for us! 🤷🏻♀️

To me it makes sense…not every thing should be put in the dishwasher! Also we have older crockery and China that is not dishwasher safe. As someone from the US I find it weird that people will just run water, not use those items, or even worse will just dispose of anything that doesn’t go I the dishwasher.

I also use vinegar/water to clean my house! The only difference is that I use a little bit of bleach/water to soak the shower for 3 min and then rinse/scrub it with dish soap/water. Loved the video!!
Hi. If you don't like spiders use peppermint oil and water in a spray bottle and go round the corners of your house and the front door and back . I haven't had any in the house for the past year.x
Can say this does work spiders seem to hate peppermint, there are so many essential oils that can do amazing things and are far better then poisons or chemical sprays.
I'd love to hear more cleaning ideas! I use the same cleaners throughout (I love lemon and lavendar essential oils), with the exception of Method's lime and seasalt spray. It smells divine and it's great for around pets too. (I use it to clean up acidents.) I'm a bit more liberal with my olive oil polish because I like the shine. I put baking soda (bicarbonate powder). The only thing I want to replace is my laundry detergent. I'm running through the last of it now. Great video showing how much you don't need when it comes to cleaning!
You spurred me in to whizz around my kitchen worktops this afternoon. I use damp towels to polish mirrors too. I use a spray bottle of diluted washing liquid for most cleaning jobs. I think using a plastic washing up bowl is a British thing. I have a large ceramic sink and I wouldn’t be without mine!
People underestimate the power of diluted washing up liquid!
I'm American, and I don't have a specific tub like you do, but I use one of the larger items I'm planning to wash (pots/saucepans usually) for the same purpose. Get it mostly clean, then fill it partway with soapy water and use it to wash the other stuff (glasses, etc.). Then finish cleaning that bigger pot at the very end. That way there's not a tub living in the sink, but also doesn't waste as much water.
Don’t know if you have the Full Circle brand over there, but they make scouring pads made of walnut shells. I use them as just my regular dish sponge. They’re really great!
As far as the difference in using the tap running throughout the process or filling a tub or one side of the sink with water is more to do with upbringing than location. I was raised to keep the water running so that I’m always rinsing in clean water. I know others who do one side of the sink filled with water and soap. My best friend just wets the sponge, scrubs everything, then rinses under a tiny trickle of water on and off as needed through the process. I think her method saves the most water. No constant running water, and no filling anything with water. Just a trickle when needed to rinse.
I have read that the difference between American and British dish washing is that Americans rinse off all the soap before putting stuff in the drying rack and that Brits leave suds on the dishes after rinsing in the soapy water. Not sure if that’s true or actually common over there, but I’ve read it a couple times in the past.

On one of your old videos you talked about cleaning products I mentioned "Scandish Home" you tuber.. She has loads of natural cleaning product recipes also for the toilet. I also mentioned "Everdrop" which I use a lot.. They have eco friendly cleaning products.. Tablets or powers you dissolve, that come in paper. So take no storage space either.

I’m an American and the dish tub in the sink was normal in my family but I don’t think they are extremely common. Most American homes have double sinks and people will just use one of the halves to wash or wash without filling up either the sink or tub. The tub is most common in homes with a single large sink.
Vinegar will etch stone over time. I think the special cleaners for stone counters are probably just pH balanced for the stone.
I live on the Isle of Wight, we have a refill community who come round in an electric van. We just leave our empty bottles by the side door. They refill them from the van , job done x
Never use any vinegar on your worktop! I am in UK too. I recommend Spruce (from Amazon or there website) - the multi ourpose cleaner. Its zero waste and it’s good in quarz!

Hei Norge :-) I utgangspunktet er det et badekar for oppvasken din. Du fyller den opp med såpe og vann, og legger alt det skitten serviset i, og de kan deretter trekke i noen minutter. Deretter skrubber du oppvasken som normalt, men bare skyll dem etterpå ved å dyppe dem i karet. Hvis du har veldig skitten eller mye oppvask, må du kanskje skifte vannet halvveis eller noe. En opvaskebalje sparer mye vann! Håper det svarer på spørgsmålet ditt :-D

Hey, very nice video, very inspiring to change some stuff in my cleaning routine. I just want to add that my dishwasher uses about 9l of water during 1 eco cycle. And I dont have any special dishwasher. I think that you can't wash all dishes in sink using only 9 liter of water. I think that it is the most eco way to wash and I barely use sink to wash my dishes.

Vinegar is very acidic and can cause quartz to discolour...do not use bleach ... either... Normal antibacterial dish soap is ideal. And be wiped over and cleaned off easily.
Nothing abrasive. Ammonia. Sharp objects and alkaline cleaners. Great job ... X

I've just started using a product called soapberries in the washing machine. There is enough in the bag for 90+ washes and cost me $A16.95. They give a nice fresh sort of smell.
I loved the video. I've been slacking lately on staying low waste and sustainable with my cleaning so thus video was perfect timing. I'd love to see content on cleaning the appliances. They are sometimes more difficult to clean so for me it's more tempting to stray to harsher cleaners for them. Also I don't have any pets at the moment but some videos on how you Stat sustainable for the pets food, bedding, litter, shampoos, leash/ harness for robbie would be interesting

i always thought the short (one hour) cycles on your dishwasher and washing machine use way more water and energy .... is this not true? i mean this is why the eco cycles are always super long

I think it depends on the particular maschine. When we bought a dishwasher the instruction manual listed all of the different cycles and how much energy and water they use. The eco cycle and 30min cycle used approximately as much energy and water, so I always use the 30min one, since the eco cycle takes like 4 hours :D So i'd recommend checking the manual :)

I wash my clothes with just soda crystals or a eco egg. Eco zone has a great fabric softeners it's cruelty free and vegan friendly. They don't us Tallow ( animal fat) which is a animal bio product and can be found in most fabric softeners. Great video ❤

Method are better than most main brands but are actually not very sustainable (5/20 as rated by ethical consumer). For laundry and cleaning products I now order in bulk - so I’m trialling the planet detox kitchen and bathroom cleaner (which is like a scrubby soap bar and works amazingly! It’s 15/20 in terms of ethics, which is a really good mark) all plastic free.
For laundry I order the massive bulk containers from Miniml (they’re expensive upfront but when bought this way the per use actually comes out cheaper or the same price as the Asda smart price stuff but is super sustainable!, also 15/20. I really like the miniml almond laundry stuff. We also always wash on the eco settings and use the smol dishwasher tabs (my partner doesn’t like the idea of powder which is offered by other sustainable brands I’ve mentioned, smol score 14/20 and work better than the splosh ones I trialed before 12/20).
A handy guide I use for finding sustainable items is the ethical consumer website - they’ve got product guides where they rate things in terms of sustainability (usually vegan products are always at the top as companies get points for this). So that’s helpful for looking for items that fit your budget and shopping style! We used to use vinegar but my partner hated the smell and didn’t feel like things were clean so we changed to buying eco brands
Top tip to get the essential oils to emulsify into the water and vinegar is to add some rubbing alcohol or vodka into the cleaner, just a capful will do usually

I have just discovered, Milk and More, basically your milkman. They deliver to your door, in glass bottles. No plastic, no need to drive to refill, just to your door. There is hand soap, washing up liquid, fabric softener, washing liquid, shampoo and hair conditioner. They also do oat milk and almond milk in milk bottles.

The basin in the sink, it's definitely a British thing I've been to America loads on holiday and they don't do the basin thing, they either fill the sink or keep the water running and wash that way or a dishwasher
In America we typically have a two basin sink. So the sink isn’t all open it’s split into two sections so one would be for washing the dirty dishes and be like the tub and the other for rinsing when they are clean. But I do think we Americans are wasteful and probably don’t do that and either run the faucet with water or just use the dishwasher. Now with people getting on the “farm sink” trend people are getting rid of the two basin sinks and going for the big one like you have
Ours is actually split in two as well! Maybe we can try to make the tub in the sink a trend in the US too haha
