It's time to save the planet together! In all seriousness, we need to start getting our act together when it comes to climate change, and I hope this list can start you on that journey. Check out my blog post to accompany this video with loads more resources and links to help you find all the info and help you need! www.madeleineolivia.co.uk/blog/how-to-save-the-planet-in-a-budget
I would love to see a series on sustainability techniques/products from different countries. My favourite parts of sustainability are the older things, that my grandparents talk to me about, and I think that it would be different everywhere (and be really useful).
The only thing I would add is don’t beat yourself up ordering from Amazon during a pandemic. I’m probably much older than most of your subscribers. I’m 61 and diabetic so I’ve been using Amazon much more than I used to as I’m trying to stay out of the shops until I’m vaccinated and the pandemic is over. Otherwise all great tips. 👍🏻
Living in the Netherlands I'm automatically registered to vote, because every dutch citizen needs to be registered at their municipality (when they move). With every election, everyone older that 18 y.o. just gets the voting cards in their mailbox automatically. I'll definately vote in March! I've also used ecosia for a while now, totally love it! Great video! Keep it up :D
In Germany as well. I am a little confused that you have to do that in England , when I was studying in Manchester I was notified that I can vote as well ( I didn't as I was there not even for a year so I do not want to screw that up for permanent residents ) so perhaps it depends on the kind of election if you have to register proactive
Same in Lithuania, you even get the constitution as a gift when you vote for the first time. A registration thing is so weird, here you do that only if you're voting abroad or from home (for old and disabled people)
Having conversations like these are such an amazing way to inform ourselves more, and later on help others with our knowledge! (I need to do budget down more for sure!)
I love these lists because you have such a large platform and can influence so many people! It was you that started me on my sustainability journey this past year and your book helped me loads! You make such a difference for so many of us!
Thank you so much for this video, Madeleine! Since I got involved in sustainability, a few years ago, I've been suffering of eco-anxiety. Living with my parents and still being a student, I don't really have the economic means to do certain things, yet I find myself struggling mentally. Every day I stress about every single thing that I do, I think about how my actions or what I buy are going to affect the planet. If I have to buy something I start wondering where it was made, who made it, were they paid for it. I stopped eating meat, I only eat fish from time to time and I've drastically cut down on cheeses (I've never drank cow milk so that's not a problem, I love my soy milk) and 4 out of 7 I eat vegan (all my vegetables come from my parents' garden). I haven't bought any fast fashion clothes in over 2 years, but I have problems finding nice comfy vegan shoes that aren't too expensive, so I had to buy them from a non sustainable brand. I've also started buying whatever I can in bulk. I've switched to solid soaps, bamboo toothbrush and menstrual cup. I always try to teach new things to my parents, boyfriend and friends, and whenever I see them making efforts I feel super proud. However, I still feel like I'm not doing enough and I feel like I carry the weight of the world on my shoulders. Some days I find myself thinking like we won't be able to save this world and wonder what we're going to leave to our children. Some days I feel so overwhelmed, that I, someone who has always dreamed of having children, start wondering if it would be quite selfish of me to start a family in such difficult times... I'm sorry if what I wrote doesn't make sense, but I started writing and a sort of stream of consciousness came out.
I've started washing my hair over the sink with a jug! I can wash my hair (long and thick!) with 1L worth of water using the jug rather than in the shower! 🚿 Loving all these tips! You've really encouraged me to live a LOT more sustainably! ❤️
perfect video, summarises everything i always wanted to say to my family and friends! i love how you talk about systematic racism and stuff like this in relation to climate change, i think that is very important point of the "climate change talk". hope more people will realise how crucial it is and try to make a difference, even with very small steps
I think going on a budget is key-knowing where is most important to allocate the money you make! Also accepting what you can’t change, just doing your best. I’ve been a vegetarian for almost 19 years, almost vegan...but I love cheese. I just moderate and remind myself that all the other sustainable choices I make matter. Thanks for this video, I absolutely loved it.
Lots of (unethical) banks will invest in things like mining, the weapon industry, fossil fuels (banks invest in more than you think!) or will treat their employees unfairly, so I would suggest looking for a website that compares different banks to see what they invest in! Ethical banks will invest in green energy, fair wages and equal treatment :)
I'm a teacher and I'm looking into what to do to change school food to mostly plantbased vegan food. It's not only awesome for the environment, it could also reduce healthcare cost and solve the obesity issue.
If your students see you being a vegan and a normal caring human being, it will make them change the view on it and they would be more eager to become vegetarian as they grow up or make their parents cook them less meat now.
Perfect composting for flats/houses without gardens - wormery. Its amazing, you'd be left with a compost that you can use for potting plants and a worm juice that is a great fertiliser for plants as well. And one by a brand Urbalive also looks amazing (not a budget one but you can also DIY it).
Thank you Maddie!!!! You reminded me that I DON’T need that plastic organizer from Target, and I can find useful ways to use what I already have. Canceled the item pick-up while watching your video 🤗
Thank you so much for the content of this video. It alleviates the guilt I have for not doing enough for the planet. I really like that you articulate your arguments with intersectionality. It's always a pleasure to hear your laugh, it makes me smile every time :).
Thanks for sharing these more nuanced ideas which aren't usually mentioned by most other influencers! Some of them are more intuitive but some others really helped me despite I consider myself quite considerate of sustainable initiatives. Big appreciation on the minding intersectionality, registering to vote, and speaking to MPs etc, thanks for not shying away from it.
Maddie, I really loved this video and the way you spoke in it! ❤ I must say that I haven't finished watching your last videos in quite a while because of the number of adds in them. But this one really stands out! Please keep it up! ❤
We trim the lawn but we send yard scraps to a facility for compost and whatnot, and have 2 "gardens": one of produce and one of flowers/flora. Animals of all kind come through the yard. 😊 💚🐝
I really love this video! I live in the netherlands and this month it is vote-time, I''ll vote green. I also use Ecosia and talk with friends and family about the climate and sustainability. Now we use zero-waste and natural shampoo and toothpaste. A tip: use the app 'a world in support of act now', you can add new habits and you can see how much CO2, water and electricity you have saved. It makes me motivated!!
Not only do I delete stuff but I also unsubscribe from a lot of emails and when I get junk postage mail, I take the steps to get my address or work address off of their list so they dont waste ink/paper and postage/traveling to send it just to be thrown into the recycling bins. ♻️💚
this is so so soooo important. I hope so many people see it. it’s hard, off the bat, to not feel overwhelmed healing all what we could do but like you said at first, we all can’t do it all! thank you for your suggestions. I really enjoy your book and can’t wait to pass it onto someone else. thank you!!!!
Thank you Maddie!! It's been a long time since I've seen such a reflected thorough list that emphasise knowledge and encourage understaning of societal issues Thank you!
I know this may be an uncomfortable tip but I turn the water off in the shower unless I'm actively rinsing off so I don't have to rush myself or waste water. Of course this probably only works for me because I live in California where the temperature is almost always moderate.
Thank you. I'm not 100% sustainable but try my best as much as I can. I cant help but be frustrated when I see others being wasteful, or feel that they are ruining the planet. I try to take a step back and just concentrate in my own actions. Some people roll their eyes when I raise issues about single use plastic, wasting water and electric, fast fashion, heavily processed foods and even fox hunting 😣 I'll look into Octopus, thank you
I've been a member of my local library for about a year but haven't obviously been able to visit. Then I remembered I downloaded Libby (library app) and now enjoying my first library book (e-book, clearly) since I was a teenager and I'm now 42 and I have another pre-booked. I'm about to look if I'll need to pay to get out of my fixed term with E.on and if not I shall be nipping back to use the link, cheers! Thank you for all your advice, it is always appreciated xx
Yeeeesssss!!!!! I love Octopus! As soon as I left home (again!) & bought my first house (& therefore in charge of those scary adult things called bills!!!) I knew Octopus was the electric & gas company for me. It’s literally a couple quid extra for the super green gas & that’s nothing for my clean conscience. I just wish they would install a smart meter then I’d be living the eco dream (I’ve registered but nothing has happened). Madeline, do you know that although Cornwall council frustratingly don’t do kerbside tetra-pac recycling, they do take it at the main dump sites now?? Wasn’t sure from this if you knew. There is a list online of which ones do. It’s my New Years resolution to do this this year, obviously save it until going past to minimise car use also! Thanks for this video because I need refreshers every now & then to see how far I’ve come & how far I’ve got left to go. Even if everyone tries a little bit, it will have a large collaborative effect, but like you say, until we can hit major companies & their back pockets, we have a long way to go.
Last year my city started a trial period to recycle plastic - they put out bins on the street where people could bring their plastic to, to be collected and recylced. I've been recycling pet, glass, paper, aluminum and foodscraps. One bin bag lasted me a month after I was able to recycle plastic - It's crazy. For a while we could recycle tetrapak at aldi but they stopped and now we can't do it anywhere else which sucks.
I half thought about not watching this video because I feel like a lot of the time I don’t learn anything new from them (not your videos specifically but sustainability tip videos in general). But setting a shower timer is definitely going to be something that I do going forward, so simple but definitely something I could improve on. And I wish there was the option of sustainable banking in Ireland, I don’t think there is!
Heyy! Ive been doing the 1 song in he shower for so long now! among other things of course! its nice to see you say that in a video, don't think ive ever heard someone say that!!
As someone who works at a data centre, yes, online storage is physically taking up space and power. A LOT. And there is so much wastage. With packaging for devices and parts (due to it being so expensive it has a lot of packaging to keep it secure), and if something isn't being used, it gets thrown out. So much production goes into single use items. It's kind of depressing seeing perfectly good cables or straps or quality foam go straight into the bin.
sometimes your own conscience is the only thing you can control. but, as a consumer, you DO have power over corporations by changing how and what they offer for sale - your purchase power drives their corporate conscience
Highly recommend octupus energy. 100% renewable energy, can't beat it. Also obviously you can't recycle every piece of plastic, but doing your best, is the best option. Composting is excellent, being doing this for bout 8 years. And finally went vegan 3 years ago (for the animals) but the environment impact is also a great bonus. Obviously try to by British vegetables and fruit as much as you can.
TreeApp is currently my favourite, they show you a daily sponser each day and you answer a question from it and they plant a tree from it, i've managed to find more ethical businesses through it and even saved money on new sustainable deodrant :)
I was using Ecosia and loved it, when I got a computer doctor to check my laptop, he said there was something downloaded making it slow/laggy, so he got rid of it but then I didn't have Ecosia when I got it back 😩
I really loved this video a lot! Great tips, thank you :) Do you have any more tips on proper food storage or maybe even a video on it? If not, I would love to learn more about it :)
(#24) The big victory in my community is we stopped a 1 million sq ft glass factory from being built on the edge of town on prime farmland. It was to run 24/7 so you can imagine the pollution, use of water resources, trucking, etc. (#11) We must stop buying over-packaged products and tell the company why we will not buy them - specifically products that are boxed or encased in plastic unnecessarily.
Interesting point about erasing emails etc, but I'm pretty sure it's not correct? If you picture a computer or laptop and delete everything on a storage device, the storage device will still have electrical power to it as that's simply how it works unless you unplug it. People's data is spread over the world not just in one server room and backups also would be undeletable by users. Still though, thanks for the video I really liked it!
Your data has to be stored somewhere and those servers use a lot of energy! The point is basically not to assume that the internet and your cloud storage doesn’t use any energy because it’s not physically there in front of you because it does
@@soniaparker4357 I do this too. Pasta sauce glass jars for soups, stews etc. Love salsa jars, taco sause jars etc for small amounts of foods. Aquafaba, sauces, smoothies etc.
I know but the big changes in our society started with minorias it’s a matter of time and tend to be expanded .... so do what we can individually and things change . Good video this one Madeleine x
I feel like I'm alone in my community as far as others agreeing with me about environmental issues. I feel wary about bringing up the subject because I know I will not have others on my side. This is a real problem and so it's great to think people can sit around together and discuss these issues without having others go against any ideas you have, but in reality, I can't. My family are the only ones that really care about the environment and do their part but as far as others, no. So I loved your video but am sad to say I can't follow some of it in my community.
1) You can't do it alone. 2) Go on a budget. 3) Stop buying fast fashion. 4) Leave your lawn alone. 5) Become a minimalist. 6) Switch to a renewable energy company. 7) Use ecosia as a search engine. 8) Talk about sustainability with everybody. 9) Register to vote. 10) Accept what you can and cannot change. 11) Hold brands accountable. 12) Speak to your local representative about climate change. 13) Always be prepared. 14) Read and read more. 15) Set a timer for your shower. 16) Learn how to repair things. 17) Change to an ethical bank and ethical investments. 18) Empty your inbox and your online storage. 19) Say no. 20) Unplug and switch off. 21) Secondhand first. 22) Learn how to store your food properly. 23) Compost your food waste. 24) Start a petition. 25) Plant a pollinator-friendly plant. 26) reuse what you already have. Always. 27) Learn about recycling rules. 28) Understand intersectionality in environmentalism. 29) Develop a community. 30) Go beyond lists like this.
Hi Maddie, I'm curious to know what you think about the voluntary 'extinction' movement i.e. choosing not to have children because of the impact humans have on the planet through their hugely expanding population size?
It's time to save the planet together! In all seriousness, we need to start getting our act together when it comes to climate change, and I hope this list can start you on that journey. I loved this video and found it very helpful.
Your intro had me thinking of the quote: "The most sustainable product is the one you didn't buy" 😊❤️
My husband and I are very fortunate to own a wind generator and solar panels
Unfortunately here in the States you cant pick your energy provider. It's determined by your location. EU is awesome!

I didn’t know that ethical banks exist, to be fair I haven’t even thought about it, can you please tell us a little bit more?
There’s “tomorrow bank” e.g. and in NZ there’s the “care saver”

Obviously try to by British vegetables and fruit as much as you can.
Love the way u talk 💕 also good advices c:
Love this video was just talking to my husband about this kind of stuff last night ❤️
Thank you so much! xx
AMAZING video! 💚🌱
TreeApp is currently my favourite, they show you a daily sponser each day and you answer a question from it and they plant a tree from it, i've managed to find more ethical businesses through it and even saved money on new sustainable deodrant :)
I was using Ecosia and loved it, when I got a computer doctor to check my laptop, he said there was something downloaded making it slow/laggy, so he got rid of it but then I didn't have Ecosia when I got it back 😩
This is incredibly important. Thank you!
I really loved this video a lot! Great tips, thank you :)
Do you have any more tips on proper food storage or maybe even a video on it? If not, I would love to learn more about it :)
Well done as always 🙌🏻
(#24) The big victory in my community is we stopped a 1 million sq ft glass factory from being built on the edge of town on prime farmland. It was to run 24/7 so you can imagine the pollution, use of water resources, trucking, etc. (#11) We must stop buying over-packaged products and tell the company why we will not buy them - specifically products that are boxed or encased in plastic unnecessarily.
Number 1! 🥰💚
basically, get the Tories out!
Haha YES!
Can you please make a high protein vegan meals on a budget please 🥺
Interesting point about erasing emails etc, but I'm pretty sure it's not correct? If you picture a computer or laptop and delete everything on a storage device, the storage device will still have electrical power to it as that's simply how it works unless you unplug it. People's data is spread over the world not just in one server room and backups also would be undeletable by users.
Still though, thanks for the video I really liked it!
Your data has to be stored somewhere and those servers use a lot of energy! The point is basically not to assume that the internet and your cloud storage doesn’t use any energy because it’s not physically there in front of you because it does
This was great! Load's of things I hadn't thought about! Thank you. Do you have a depop at all? Thanks.
Thank you for your content. But the best part was when your dog showed up.
Yay! Love this! Thanks for sharing
Thank you!! xx

Do you have a favorite freezer safe container brand? I'm trying to freeze more food, but my containers arent working out great.
Unfortunately I don't, however anyone else in the comments feel free to give suggestions!
I re use old takeaway containers or r glass jars, you don't need to buy special freezer containers.
I reuse my margarine tubs
@@soniaparker4357 I do this too. Pasta sauce glass jars for soups, stews etc. Love salsa jars, taco sause jars etc for small amounts of foods. Aquafaba, sauces, smoothies etc.
I hadn't heard of Depop - will check them out :)
Definitely check them out! xx
vinted is also really good, i've got some bargains from there too x
Just what I needed thank you
Thank you for watching! I'm glad it could help you xx

Great video Maddie! Inspiring as always :)
Does anyone know of an energy provider like Octopus but for Ireland? Thanks
I just signed up to octopus a few weeks ago, wish I’d have got the £50 🤣 x

Number 9>>>>
I know but the big changes in our society started with minorias it’s a matter of time and tend to be expanded .... so do what we can individually and things change . Good video this one Madeleine x
The lawn thing is so very English of you :-D
I feel like I'm alone in my community as far as others agreeing with me about environmental issues. I feel wary about bringing up the subject because I know I will not have others on my side. This is a real problem and so it's great to think people can sit around together and discuss these issues without having others go against any ideas you have, but in reality, I can't. My family are the only ones that really care about the environment and do their part but as far as others, no. So I loved your video but am sad to say I can't follow some of it in my community.
Love your video 🌍
You remind me of actress Rachel Weisz 😀
I also use app Forest for productivity and you can earn coins and with those coins you can plant real trees through organization Trees for the future

Hi Maddie, I'm curious to know what you think about the voluntary 'extinction' movement i.e. choosing not to have children because of the impact humans have on the planet through their hugely expanding population size?
nice video
Tried Ecosia, but found I did not like it. Hard to find what I wanted.. :(
