I think both Manchester City and Chelsea have a great history, City probably being more turbulent (the third tier play-off final in the late 90s for example). Just City and Chelsea do not have the amount of long-term success of MUFC or LFC.
You overlooked slavery. Liverpool was the real heart of the slave trade, Manchester was the home of the international abolition of slavery, that is actually where it started. The Shipping canal just added fuel to the fire.
Both clubs and the fans have to be proud of their respective teams. Both have an incredible history. I couldn't imagine the league without either of these teams. In this rivalry the hate is simply banter. I have huge respect for both clubs. However football wouldn't be the same without blood boiling rivalries and sweet goosebump inducing memories. I'm a United supporter since 1998. Although Man Shitty(wink wink) is rising these days and playing exceptional football. They're still not on the same level as United and Liverpool in terms of history, fan base, trophies(champions league elites), rivalries and integral structure. I really hope all these clubs rise to the top and create magical matches and moments for us all. And leave it to us to create the buzz, banter and the atmosphere. We all love the beautiful game of Football
That's EPL magnetic appeal for you... they know how to sell their football. El Classico, I would argue is a more compelling match, because the undertone, is far more nasty than United-Liverpool economic clash... It was a match between the icon of the Catalan, and their oppressor/dictator's favorite love child. If only Leeds didn't fuck up that bad, I would argue United-Leeds would be a far more romantic rivalry.
My dad told me that in the sixties, rival fans of these two clubs would stand next to each other on the terraces. So that might suggest that during the Shankly/Busby era, there was a healthy and competitive rivalry, but nothing more. I hated the eighties era, when the whole thing became ridiculously aggressive. 1985 FA Cup semi-finals at Goodison and Maine Road were horrendous. I wish it hadn't stooped to such tribal levels and that both sets of fans could have celebrated each other as great English clubs.
Old Trafford got distroyed in WW2 so United had to play at Maine Rd. Some fans would watch United one week and city the next, because they loved football.

Fave memory? Torres terrorising Vidic in the 4-1 reversal at Old Trafford. As far as this game goes, I expect peak Mourinhoball, and another turgid draw. Maybe even a spawny one goal win for United.
In the past United is Liverpool greatest rival. But if u ask most Liverpool fans today especially the young fellas they would say Man City is their greatest rival today. Not United
Favourite Liverpool/United memory. Sitting beside my best mate in school, a United supporter, and the banter that was ever present. I had all of the joy in the 80s in primary school. He had all the joy in the 90s in big boy school. I really must get back in touch with him, for the current banter, like ;)
Important to also point out that the Manc/Scouse rivalry goes beyond the shipping canal. It’s a deep hatred through traditional “divide and rule” Englishness. In England the North is far poorer than the south, this divide worsened once industry declined in the 60s, 70s and 80s. Manchester and Liverpool - with their distinctive accents, high crime rates and impoverished areas - became the butt of English jokes. Instead of linking up together as Lancastrians and fighting these cruel stereotypes, they decided to take it out on one another. They began themselves to abuse one another with those stereotypes in order to prove, not who was better, but who was WORSE. A “yeh we’re not great but at least we’re not them“ mindset. This became incredibly nasty. Incredibly prejudice. Enter the era of hooliganism + tragedies striking the two clubs, and the cruel humour became unforgivable actions and pure hatred.
It's not a Manc/ Scouse rivalry ....its an LFC / United rivalry. I'm a Scouser, I support Everton and I have no problem with anyone from Manchester. It purely comes down to United being jealous of Liverpool in the 70;s/80/s and Liverpool being jealous of United in the 90's /2000s. Any historic social / economic rivalry between the cities is just an excuse from 2 bitter sets of fans with a divine right to win complex .
@@michealflaithbheartaigh4139 You are right about the LFC-MUFC thing. I agree it's not a city thing at all or why would Everton-City, United-Everton or City-Liverpool be just as volatile? Where you're wrong is why there is a hatred between United and Liverpool. I know you're wrong because I experienced the hatred way before Liverpool did well in the 70's or United did well in the 90's. The hatred was beginning back at LEAST as early as 1973 as Liverpool's sick song was sung in many school playgrounds around the country. Certainly in mine. Sure there are MANY other contributory factors and yours are part of that, but they didn't start the rivalry. Btw United and Everton used to get along just fine. I stood on the Gladys Street end as a teenager in the 80's and cheered when Frank Stapleton scored . The Everton fans were sound with me but that's changed nowadays. Sadly they have adopted some of the animosity usually reserved for the Red Shite ( as you would call them) ;-)
@Who's this - This has nothing to do with ´Englishness´ and even less with ´divide and conquer´(what on Earth are you on? Is someone conquering someone here? Is this attitude a top-down conspiracy to bring a rift in England's population? You're just making a very lazy and absurd analogy). In all countries there are regional tensions, with the rich regions looking down on poorer, less populated and less sophisticated regions. Find me a country where this doesn't happen.
Liverpool and Manchester have a great rivalry , I'm a Utd fan, but worked in Liverpool for many years , great people , and will never forget their taxi drivers coming over to Manchester to help the victims of the MEN bombing..now if you want to see a team we both can't stand , just wait till when Leeds get back into the premiership , if any of us are still breathing by then 🤣🤣🤣
Agreed, very much like the weird hatred between Leicester, forest and Derby. 'at least we ain't them!!' lots of these rivalries go back waaay further than the sport
Enjoyed the video....for a short video got the general gist of the rivalry....one point that could of added to video is the fact that Sir Matt Busby captained Liverpool for many games and when he retired from playing wanted to manage Liverpool, but was only offered an assistant job so went to united...
What a great video !! Full of fascinating facts I’d not heard before - and I live in and support Manchester United !! I must admit - on hearing the narrators American accent - I gave a slightly pessimistic sigh - yet he delivered a really interesting perspective on the often tempestuous relations between these two famous clubs. Top marks and a like & subscribe from me !! Thanx again - and greetings from Manchester. Rx
Now that you're keen on doing more inter-city rivalries, mind I suggest: Inter vs Juve PSG vs Marseille Porto vs Benfica (come on, you know you want to)
ArinJoe14 either way it’s the biggest and best rivalry in England. No matter where Liverpool or Man U are in the league both supporters always look to this game it’s just too big.
Nice, didn't think you would do this in The Roots of The Rivalry series simply for the reasons you mentioned in the beginning. I would have suggested it a while back if I knew you would but nonetheless I'm glad you did this video. As a LiverpoolFC supporter I enjoy this game every season when it comes around, thanks for giving us this video.
A very good economic cultural sporting explanation of the rivalry between the clubs ... As I am from Liverpool, I do not hate people from Manchester or the City plus the surrounding areas, its the Football Club of M.U.F.C.and how they were built up by the media to be great when they achieved Very Little, compered to Liverpool through the 1970s and 1980s.
Generally United fans did respect the old Liverpool with Shanks, Keegan, Heighway etc but when those old teams were replaced by teams full of cheaters, divers, racists, etc most respect died. Even Dalglish supported racism and 2 counts of GBH committed by the CLUB CAPTAIN ( which are BOTH on video). The very same captain dived for a penalty in the 2005 CL final which showed children all around the world that cheating pays off!!! Add to that the hypocrisy of the club and fans regarding the tragic death of 39 Juve fans in 1985 along with the creation of sick songs celebrating the death of 23 people and you have a perfect recipe for a vile club and scum fanbase! Sorry Cal H but Liverpool represent EVERYTHING that's bad in modern day football and most importantly of all set a terrible example to kids today on what is regarded as acceptable behaviour! How else can you explain why a club which hasn't won a League Title in 28 years is so despised up and down the UK?
I grew up in a village at the European continent. I became a LFC fan in the first part of the 1970's. LFC and Man Utd had the biggest fan base here. I knew about nothing of the local rivelry between Merseyside and Manchester. Still based on the fan base in my village Man Utd and Man Utd fans became a natural rival to me and I guess this was mutual. During the 1980's the Man Utd fans were reduced to nothing. We didn't see any Man Utd fans. We didn't hear them. They were like nobody. I bet they were here but they kept shut.
You're ALMOST there. It was actually the building of the bridge on the Manchester Ship Canal that REALLY kicked things off. Major engineering works in the North West of England got their workers from Liverpool, but whoever was in charge of Manchester at the time decided to give the work to Mancunians, so it was a DOUBLE blow for them.
Yea also the Cesspool fans made up humorous chants about the Munich disaster and were the first in the country to make up nasty chants about an opponent. Says way more about that club and it’s fans.
Is it really helping when you sold to someone who is in need? Because when people are doing a charity drive for survivors of a natural disaster, I DONATED my stuffs FOR FREE! I don't ask money from them.
ijuwan i know right, Liverpool sold us some of their shit players and then proceeded to make fun of the victims of the disaster and now they try to act like they had some sort of moral highground. Pathetic really.
Would love to see you do a root of the rivalry video for Leeds Vs Man Utd, still considered by many to be one of the biggest rivalries in England, but obviously hasn't been played competitively for quite some time due to the misfortunes of Leeds United. Still, both supporters definitely don't like each other very much, even after all of these years. Fun fact: Leeds will be playing Manchester United in a 'friendly' in Perth, Australia next year, this will be the first time the two clubs have met since they last played back in 2011.
Anthony Mata Still remember watching that match, only the second MU-Liverpool match that I watched on TV. It felt amazing watching Mata, but my favourite moment was Gerrard’s red card. Still remember laughing while my Liverpool fan dad just watched

As a fan of neither team, I am thinking the FA Cup Semi-Final of 1985, or Cantona's goal in 1996 FA Cup final or Cantona's match after suspension where Fowler got a brace. Love these videos, if you did one on the Turin derby it would be appreciated.
You actually kind of downplay Newton Heath's record... They actually had pretty good players and had a bunch of good upsets against more established teams, but was plagued by mismanagement ( kink of like today's post sir Alex era ) hence the slide down. It was due to these potential that there was interest in purchase of the club and restructuring&/ rebranding did work in rising the club's profile. However, when these "promising players" were gone they struggled in getting new good players since all the good Manchester players would rather play in the well financed Man City. That's why Sir Matt Busby's solution in developing young talents was a great idea that revolutionized the game.
Do one on the Sheffield derby as a united fan I would love to see it one of Britain’s best but somewhat forgotten rivalries due to the success of business in the premier league as the next derby between them is in March 4 at hillsbourgh would be a really good one to research mate . UTB
@Thomas Shelby Leader of the Peaky Fookin Blinders imagine, despite all that, Liverpool will make it 19 soon , just one behind the mancs and might even equal them next year..
Swansea City and Cardiff City the South Wales Derby is a firey rivalry I remember the most the Swansea Jack's vs Cardiffs soul crew was always eventful
The rivalry was there much earlier than the late seventies and early eighties and it started from a bitterness and envy from Liverpool. Back when Shanks started @ Liverpool in the late 50's the rivalry was a healthy one but then United became everyone's darlings after Munich and then with the amazing side of the mid sixties with Best, Law and Charlton. Still there was little hatred around. But as Liverpool got stronger under Shanks and started winning a resentment started because they still didn't get the attention that they felt they deserved. And the reason they didn't get the attention was because everyone was more interested in what was happening @ Old Trafford with Manchester United. This really grated with Liverpool fans. They felt that the BBC, the newspapers and the general public always wanted to know about Manchester United and tbf they had a point. The truth is that everyone WAS more interested in United and still are. It's just the way things are. But scousers the world over are very, very bitter about that. This was just the start of the rivalry. Many other things added to it over the years but lets get 1 thing straight. There was always a HEALTHY rivalry up until the early/mid seventies. It only started getting ugly when Liverpool felt overlooked and began their famous munich song ! I don't know exactly the year that song was invented but I know it was pre-1973 as I heard it sang in the playground @ school.
As a Liverpool fan I'm enjoying our good look at the moment but I do feel for Man Utd, the rivalry will always be a big game and one that both sets of fans look forward to
the so called hatred between the 2 clubs really started when fergie joined united and said the effing perch thing but, he also knew that the only way to get united to their apex was to instill a hatred for the club that had totally eclipsed them for the last 20 years, the only problem was that they had forgotten how much these 2 clubs had actually respected eachother throughout the years to the extent that when tragedy struck in 58 it was liverpool football club that offered united a pick of their junior players in order to lessen the hardship that was impending unfortunately the supporters that are younger dont know this and why some mention munich 58 and on the other side they sing murderers if both set of supporters really knew about how things were before 58 there would be respect on both sides, i wish it could be like it was pre 58 when there was rivalry but all that mattered was watching great football
The real hatred actually started before fergie joined United. I remember the ‘ CS gas ‘ game at anfield in the 85/86 season when Liverpool fans threw a noxious substance at the arriving United team and Ron Atkinson. Plus the antics at the 85 cup semi final at goodison has gone down in history. It was lively to say the least!! That was in the ground during the game!!
We're the two great cities created by the industrial Revolution. We had different interests. Liverpool shipped goods into and out of Lancashire. Manchester made stuff and value added. During America's Civil War Liverpool's business men wanted to keep the flow of goods going and sided with the Confederates. Manchester's nonconformist Protestants sided the Union. It's an ancient rivalry.
Nope. The Manchester people initially sided with Confederacy, as they was where their cotton came from. Liverpool, home of the Confederate fleet: localwiki.org/liverpool/Liverpool_-_The_Home_of_the_Confederate_Fleet

Fair points. However I will say that United's ascendancy in the 90s was based on their marketing strategy to go global with their brand at a time when football became more mainstream due to TV rights, and not simply associated with a 'working class' game. It was a stroke of genius. Revenue streams from that brand are the reason they are the club with the biggest value in the world. Liverpool missed the boat, and still believed in 'promoting from the boot room' rather than seizing on the commercial success of their rivals that fed the success on the pitch. LFC are finally back because they are been managed properly both on and off the field.
red Baron Ik this comment is old but that is statistically incorrect as united claim to have 659 million supporters and only a few million people live in Manchester altogether.

Chelsea and city wished they had a history like these two ☠️
I think both Manchester City and Chelsea have a great history, City probably being more turbulent (the third tier play-off final in the late 90s for example).

Infact Man U v Liv is the most viewed football match in the world, way ahead of el classico..
@Gegen press El Clasico without Ronaldo sucks now!
Liverpool - Manchester United and AC Milan - Inter Milan are much better and more interesting!

I'm a pool fan, but have to admit Wayne Rooney impressed me by seeming to be the only one running on the pitch

I’m so happy you mentioned the smiths. You and they are criminally underrated.

The Social movement of the 70s killed the mutual respect of most clubs.

@terry phidaheights ?
we always were great, man utd the club with most charisma in england
It s even bigger than the World Cup final for me..... And I'm a LIVERPOOL Supporter
There's an intense mutual loathing but also a grudging respect for the history and traditions of the respective clubs.
Update! Liverpool has 6 European Cups.
Do a Manchester United and Leeds Rivalry video Mr. Darmian
fast forward to 2020 and we finally won the league!!! And another CL trophy!
You forgot to add that Liverpool help Manchester united by given them players after the Munich disaster
Yea also the Cesspool fans made up humorous chants about the Munich disaster and were the first in the country to make up nasty chants about an opponent. Says way more about that club and it’s fans.

Can you do De Klassieker (Ajax vs Feyenoord)?
I don't know exactly the year that song was invented but I know it was pre-1973 as I heard it sang in the playground @ school.

the so called hatred between the 2 clubs really started when fergie joined united and said the effing perch thing but, he also knew that the only way to get united to their apex was to instill a hatred for the club that had totally eclipsed them for the last 20 years, the only problem was that they had forgotten how much these 2 clubs had actually respected eachother throughout the years to the extent that when tragedy struck in 58 it was liverpool football club that offered united a pick of their junior players in order to lessen the hardship that was impending unfortunately the supporters that are younger dont know this and why some mention munich 58 and on the other side they sing murderers if both set of supporters really knew about how things were before 58 there would be respect on both sides, i wish it could be like it was pre 58 when there was rivalry but all that mattered was watching great football
