I was diagnosed with a degenerative neurological disease at 22, and it was very progressive (similar to MS but severely painful). I did all of the aggressive traditional medical care- everything. So extreme, I'm currently in PTSD therapy bc of all of the procedures I went through. My body only worsened.
At 28 I was fully bedbound, unable to speak, tolerate light, standing upright or walking on my own.
I persisted with treatment including alternative medicine.
(I was also heavily into my own research and patient advocacy online as I was a researcher in college.)
Eventually I was no longer able to be taken around to specialists begging for answers, or long stays in the hospital. Every doctor had told my family to hire help to make me comfortable, there was nothing more to be done- after they would perform expensive invasive tests and experimental procedures of course.
I spent 3 yrs believing I was going to die.
This is when my husband left and my parents took over my care. My mother began cooking for me, and trying to make anything I could eat without reacting.
Skip to a few yrs later...
Today, I'm living on my own, I can walk, stand upright, speak, tolerate light, I bathe myself, dress myself, brush my own hair and teeth, and I've just purchased a reclining bike to peddle and begin exercising. It's a long road and I'm not cured- in fact 3 of my siblings have been diagnosed with the same condition. It is genetic, but instead of surergies and procedures, were all using food as medicine, herbs, and very few pharmaceutical drugs (they're taking none actually).
My diet includes no sugars (and no artificial sugars), no wheat products, very few packaged items, very little starchy food, low animal proteins, but high in protein, high in veg fats, high in greens, low in high histimine foods, and I take Chlorophyll any way I can get it.
My siblings are the same except higher in animal protein, and no dairy for them.
Use your food as medicine and you won't need so much medicine and I'm not cured. I'm not anti-medicine, but the RIGHT foods for your body make more of a difference than you'll ever realize.

Hello from the UK. I'm 64 and want to live to 105. I am going downstairs to throw away my sugar drinks and I've ordered Mark's book. I also need to get back to using my weights. I used to be superfit, but I overdid it and got sarcoidosis of the spine for a year in 2012 and have been nervous to overdo it since. But I have osteoarthritis in my thumbs and wrist on both hands, which is painful and I truly believe I can cure it so I will follow everything Mark suggests. Thank you so much, Maria. You are a valued and needed fabulous contribution to the world xx

Thank you Marie for highlighting the work of Mark Hyman. I read many comments already. Basically, you really have to take a look at your lifestyle; not just nutrition, not just fitness, but everything. Dr. Hyman helps direct people to that and it's what is most important. You really don't need expensive testing, you need to change some habits. Thank you for sharing this wonderful interview.

Summary: Reduce or eliminate sugar or refined starch. Eat phytochemicals (from colorful plants), high-quality fruits/vegs, right kind of protein, good fats. Exercise (cardio, strength training, resistance training). Eat protein/fat in the morning, not sugar. His shake for healthy aging: goat whey, plant protein, urolithin A (pomegranate derivative), creatine, frozen blueberries/strawberries, macadamia or cashew milk. Practice hormesis (stress that doesn’t kill you-exercise, cold shower, sauna).

However he has been quite sick at times in his lungs fr and had to pull himself out of a very deep hole( ex Mercury poisoning , and at one time a serious CDiff infection)

A whole show about aging and not one word about hormones? Hormones regulate everything in the body. Is Mark taking hormones? Is Marie taking hormones? That would be important to know in an interview like this between two middle aged people that’s about diet and lifestyle.

    • @AimeeGertsch

Such a good point! Hormones are so overlooked, and yet play such a big role. Maybe his book addresses it?

@@AimeeGertsch his book isn’t out yet. It’s just a little strange. I’ve seen this with others who are popular on social media. They’ll sell some anti aging thing but never mention hormones. And if someone asks if they take hormones they’ll never answer. Especially for women taking hormone replacement makes your skin look great. It really turns back the clock.

I respect the doctor’s work and largely agree with what he says, however, I think it’s really dangerous to say sugar and belly fat “causes” cancer, diabetes, depression, infertility, etc. It’s fear mongering that promotes disordered eating for many people. People who won’t eat a banana or carrots because they have carbs. Fat and sugar may contribute to an environment that fosters disease…over time…but causation is very different than correlation. Otherwise, why isn’t every overweight person who eats sugar sick and unhealthy? Why do thin, “healthy” people drop dead of heart attacks and cancer? As the doctor himself said, our epigenome is powerful and many habits inform our health. I wish that was the highlighted narrative and that the word “causes” was eliminated from the conversation when speaking about fat/sugar in relation to disease.

    • @lindajones4849
      @lindajones4849 10 месяцев назад

Hi Superjae: Actually pharmacological doses of sugar ( table sugar that consists of one glucose and one sucrose molecule joined together). The fructose molecule actually damaged the mitochondria and decreases production of ATP. See Dr. Robert Lustig for a more thorough explanation. The high levels of added sugars- in ultraprocessed foods cause elevated insulin levels . Insulin has two effects : increased fat storage and increased growth and cell division which can cause a beginning cancer to grow, cells lining blood vessels to grow promoting heart disease and strokes. I unfortunately agree that some people may become scared and develope unhealthy eating patterns .But far too many people who are uninformed eat far too many processed foods and become overweight and obese. About the belly fat: if you have a moderate amount of subcutaneous fat you sometimes can remain healthy. It's the visceral fat in an around your organs that can make you metabolically unhealthy causing diabetes and heart disease in seemingly thin people . TOFI is actually a medical term meaning thin on the outside, fat on the inside.Again, try Dr.Robert Lustigs lectures for more detail.

So insight into action: I have access to a hot shower and a cold shower in my home for free :-) I am exercising five days a week, strength, training, and cardio, so keep doing that I am changing the proteins source to Regenerative goat whey be good for my morning shake and I’m going to get tested for my DNA methylation status because if that’s for $500 that is about an order of magnitude less than I thought

Aging sucks doesn't it??.As far as I know it's the drop off in hormone s with aging that makes it hard to recover like when we were younger. Maybe some alternating hot and cold plunges???. Wait, I hate the cold...
