Im 61 an experienced and attractive woman very happy in my own skin and more confident than I was when I was 20. I Eat healthy whole food and exercise a couple of times a week I try to walk everyday. But if I don’t it’s ok.

I’m 51 and just started lifting 3 days a week. I am on hrt and have no issues building muscle. 💪 I’m more fit than my 4 daughters in their 20’s and 30’s It’s a mindset. I want to be able to keep up with my children and grandkids
Hey don’t knock Pilates and it has more of a place than you think. I’m 54 and teach it to women over 65 …it works to build strength, flexibility and stability (keeps me from falling) and I teach women to get off the ground. We use every plane of motion. Maybe you did the “fitness Pilates” that has no sense of awareness on how you move. And….if you’re out of shape Pilates will help you perform strength training better because it’s targets the how you move. Pilates helps you walk better..live better ..,breath better have a more balanced nervous system…etc etc
I agree, Pilates, yoga , and any form of ballet exercises that would include deep stretching and moving your body in various planes are so important. I feel that now women are being told to lift weights , but forget that real stretching is a must for anti-aging as well. Myself I was doing ballet , and Pilates all my life. Lately i noticed some loss of muscles mass, so I decided to shift focus on lifting weight and resistance training. After one year I noticed more pain in my joints, less range of movements, change in posture - all due to tighter muscles. So now I do resistance training but came back to doing good deep pilates and ballet exercises. I feel back to how I was in my 30s.
Thank you, but stop with the term anti aging. There is no such thing. Pro aging, improved aging, healthy aging, happy aging and just plan aging-yes, but the term anti aging implies that aging is a negative condition and needs to be prevented. How lucky are we to have the opportunity to age?!
LOVE this. I'm 72 and completely PRO AGING. we have to shift this narrative fast, and soon. Especially the myths about sleep, protein, and LIFTING HEAVY THINGS. I love that you covered being able to build strength at home. It's so helpful to dispel the myth that you need to go to the gym and use a bunch of machines or weights to build strength.
Almost all restaurants cut their olive oil with seed oils. Only the most expensive, high end places use 100% quality, single source EVOO. Eating out a lot or getting loads of take out is a disaster.
Even the high end places don't. Not in the 5 star place I worked at anyway. They say it's organic and local but it's not. Pure olive oil is like $35 for a tiny bottle.
At 68, I'm still very strong, lifting heavy materials, with a physically active lifestyle, not a workout routine. I've always been muscular, not slender, with a wonderful hourglass voluptuous body. I'm stronger, have more endurance, and healthier than most people my age, including men. I'm the energizer bunny! Fortunately for me, besides having some great genes from my dad, who was a pro football player, I've always been active, riding bicycles (across the US and Europe), dancing, forest work (chainsaw), and mostly unprocessed, organic, and natural foods since I was 14 years old. Rarely drink alcohol, no drugs, including aspirin, and never smoking anything. Even more important for me, I take care of my own health with naturopathic and homeopathic remedies (which are quickly being blocked by commercial medical interests) and NEVER go to doctors. I've never owned a scale for weighing this body. Daily stretching and some yoga helps keep this body flexible. I live in the forest, away from most RF, and no cellular EMF toxicity. Overall, I listen to the body, have a peaceful and spiritual life, and work my butt (which is firm and round) off every day....chop wood, carry water. Glad your guest is promoting fat-positive and natural image values!
Exactly! Doctors ask me for advice because I look better and have better functional labs and images than they do. Interesting you mentioned homeopathic remedies. I rarely need them but accidents sometimes occur and these remedies have served me better than any conventional medical treatment ever has. People often forget that there were systems in place prior to today’s medical industrial complex. I’m glad they employ people and I make money off of their stocks but have rarely elected to utilize their offerings. I have no need and have more interesting and fulfilling things to do with my time and attention.

Having a wood burner, which is a labour of love, I realised a long time ago that I’d need to keep fit to manage the sawing, collecting and stacking of logs. I’m 68 and do push ups, squats, sit ups etc and intermittent walking / jogging most days so I’m still capable of getting all of the wood I need and am medication free.
Oh this video is awesome!!!! I've been in menopause for over 10 years now, However.... been doing resistance training dumbbell workouts every other day and it's changed my life. I cannot be on HRT hormones due to a clotting disorder discovered in my 20's but it is what it is, working out truly helps my mood, boosts my libido and overall mental and body health. I've lost over 30 pounds and definitely have muscle definition now! I actual wear a regular bathing suit now, no more "skorts" and my husband is loving it. I have my wedding weight back after having two kids. My husband is lifting weights/doing body weight exercises as well and looks more fit then in his 20's. We do not plan on retiring, both work from home which believe me, we WORK, but do have the luxury to work out when we want. No excuses. We walk after breakfast or some other meals when we can - we have a boxer dog - he loves any form of exercise! Even on vacation we get some fun exercise in. I do not like sitting around like a lump - it's boring. I've been overweight before and it's not fun - I will not do that again. I hope to go into older age as healthy as possible.
Yes I was 1967 born ,I decided to have 6 packs on my tummy before 60 years old . It started 2023 February 5, Go yoga , Pilate, power lifting slowly heavier after 6 month , Koto diets to canivore diet 8 weeks for this Summer ! Not have 6 packs yet but truly tone down . I don’t weigh myself very often, up 5 pounds down for sure . Weight is not my concern. Pul ups ..10 is my goal as well . I hang !!
I’m still young but my mom is about 51yo. I’m slowly convincing her to eat more protein and do more strength training. Last week she joined the gym with me💪🏻. Now I just gotta convince my dad too❤
@@AAPAI_24 it’s a bit old to start taking more care of your health. But at least she started worrying now , better late than never. After 30yo women start loosing 1% muscle mass per year and after the menopause it’s harder to gain muscles. The earlier u start taking care of your health , the better

I’m 45 and I have a 6 and 5 year old. I also work as an ER nurse and I’m more fit than my 30 year old counter parts. I really hate working out persay. Never liked the gym but I stay active. I also cook at home and just eat regular foods. Btw, everyone tells me I look 30 or even in my 20’s. I get this daily. They are always shocked when I say I’m 45. I also used to live in nyc where I walked everywhere.
You're doing the right thing and do not stop - I see often younger people destroying their beautiful bodies that they have. In my 20's I was overweight for about 5 years until I wised up, lost weight before turning 30 and never looked back. I'm now 56 and doing dumb bell work outs every other day - yoga and pilates occasionally, and walking my boxer dog 2-3 times a day. I work from home so this is possible. I eat clean all week and one day a week my husband and I eat out and have a "fun" meal but then it's back to clean eating for the week. This has worked for us for years. You can do it.
In June 2024, I did a JLo challenge. I watched several JLo films for inspiration, then followed her exact diet and exercise routine (stretches, strength training & dancing). I look terrible week 1-2 (increased stress cortisol when you start strength training). I persisted, started to feel good, enjoy it. I got so many compliments this summer ‘you look lovely’, ‘you look sexy’, ‘how old are you? 31, 37?’ I am JLo age. I confirm her healthy lifestyle plays a huge role in her famous figure and glow.
12 hour fast IS fasting. I finish eating my dinner at 8.30 at night and wake up at 6.30 so if I didn't make the effort to wait until I get to work and eat then at 9/9.30 I would only have 10 hour fasting time. Saying it's not fasting is just demotivating. I never eat anything after dinner and wait 2 hours before I eat in the morning. For me that's not easy! 😊
8:30 finishing dinner ? Wow that's late, to late. You should always finish dinner 3-4 hours before bedtime. I eat breakfast about 8-9 am and dinner around 3-5 two large meals a day. Fasting roughly 14-16 hours a day. Works great for me!

In Ayurveda, there's a saying of "eating until the first burp." If we're eating slowly and mindfully and not shovelling food into our mouths in front of the TV or on our phones, our body will tell us when it's had enough. Becoming aware of when we have that 'first burp' and then either stopping eating then, or having another couple of mouthfuls (and then our body will give us a second burp) is the easiest way I've found to make sure I'm not overeating. Some days it won't happen until I get to the end of the plate, other days it will happen half way through. We need to start tuning into our bodies and paying attention to what it's telling us because we're all individuals and nobody's body is exactly the same as anybody else's. Trusting ourselves and our bodies rather than religiously or fanatically following what someone else is telling us (perhaps using their ideas as guidance) is the only way to really live our best lives.
Over-eating has everything to do with what you are eating. If you eat the proper human food(animals) your saitiated signal will turn on and say enough. You cannot physically overeat once your body is fully noursihed. When I was vegetarian/vegan I was always hunger. Never ever saitiated. Ate all day and felt awful. It wasn't until I started eating animal foods/fats did I feel saitiated. I can eat one meal a day and not feel hungry until the next day. I don't think about food constantly the way I did eating only plant stuff.

Resistance to the inevitable brings a lot of stress. Stress brings illness and attracts chaos to your life. Converting resistance to embrace will do so much good for you. This is what I have realised as I started my journey to 40s.
I keep thinking of Dr Longo, apparently the world’s top longevity expert We have right now. And all he says on protein - That We already eat too much and the more you eat the worse off you are . And that too much is JJ’s Idea of still not enough! And I just listened to Dr Zach Bush talk on skin health , he’s a microbiome expert, he mentions in his experience those who eat higer protein, especially animal-based, have some of the worst health & he can smell it when one walks in a room , the acids and bitterness that those highly protein foods create in the body So I’m really not sure if this is the way to go. I like JJ ‘& she really believes in what she teaches . But Maybe these kinds of people need to stop with extremes and comes back to common sense of our anatomy.

Longo and Bush are tied into the UN Sustainability Goals/Agendas that are promoting/ pushing plant based diets on humanity for nefarious social control reasons. Very big subject, warrants thoughtful, diligent research.
I would argue the quality of the protein makes all the difference. I've switched to grass fed/finished meat, wild caught fish and whole not processed foods. I've added strength training, track my food, and upped my protein. I feel better than I have in two decades - I'm 52 years young!
Growing old is not a disgrace and should be a moment of gratitude in life. The aging phase can be as enjoyable as any other phase in a human child's life.
I absolutely adore my Barre classes! It changed my whole perspective about exercising. And Yes, more protein makes a huge difference in how you feel and more fiber too.
Oh my gosh I was noticing that too! She has the Timothee Chalamet jawline, exquisite. And she’s ripped, like Dr.Stacy Sims. These women inspire me so much, brainy and fit.
I don’t find it particularly feminine though, I’m not denying she’s fit and strong, but my immediate reaction is it’s too ‘hard’ looking, both face/neck and arms look scrawny to me, personally I prefer a little body fat along with some muscle tone. Just my personal preference though, each to their own.

I stopped focusing on weight. And started looking at getting stronger and feeling better. My goal was being able to climb the 4 flights of steep steps without get winded and my kegs being weak at my family's home. It's a lot of steps from the water to the house on top cliff side. This last visit was a success. Only up from here.

I feel more weak now in my 40 than what used to to feel when I was in my 20. Every day it’s pushing myself more than what I can. Heavy pain in my back lower back now my face and really poor sleep. But exercise not only it’s for the body but the mind spirit reset the body every ligaments god bless you for this program. I could barely bend down an it’s scary to me the way I feel really really bad.
Please research hormone replacement therapy if you haven’t yet! I’m 42 and felt crappy for about 2 years. Just started HRT and it is making a huge difference in energy, body pains, mental health etc! Hope that helps!
I wish aging didn't scare me so much. I have tried almost everything to look younger + delay aging as much as possible, anything from face exercises, vitamin C serum, Fraxel, collagen supplements and of course Retin A (7 years straight), home devices and what not. However, nothing made any real difference compared to the high-quality derma pen I purchased for around 100 bucks. Within 3 months of use, my skin has improved DRAMATICALLY. I don't look like I'm 18 again, but definitely not 44 either. My fine lines have disappeared completely, and my nasolabial folds are way less are nonexist (Never had jowls though). People often underestimate the power of wounding and the revolutionary effects it can have on the skin

+1 for kora. I started doing microneedIIing since it started 12 or so years ago. Nobody believe I am 55. They all say I am in my late 30's or early 40's. I assume it works so well because when we get older, our skin gets thinner > then sagging\wrinkles are showing. The wounding kept my skin still thick and youthful.

I just want to look my best at any age. I accept whatever comes with aging like grey hair wrinkles brown spots and thicker waist. I do what I can like dressing for my body, exercise, socializing, and eating home cooked meals. I have learned to apply makeup, taken on new sports and interests.
I loved this talk. Thank you. I want to age strong and gracefully. That being said, I am sometimes overwhelmed with the information we hear. From eating protein first to eating veggies first as a Jessie Inchauspe said, as well as intermittent fasting and other scientific information out there, it can be frustrating. But I learned that I really have to listen to my body while trying different scientific methods. For example, I do not like eating breakfast in the morning, I prefer to start with lunch (I typically just do 2 meals a da)I barely have a snack, unless it’s olives or walnuts of blueberries. So in the end, I’ve decided to stop being overwhelmed, and as JJ said, try one thing, regardless of which advice I hear on the show and see how it makes me feel and what results I get. Maybe a topic for a show could be the best way to deal with so much info in a healthy way. Thank you
I agree, sooo much information. So much of it conflicting, I ‘m going to try and listen to my intuition, it’s hard though. Walking is the best exercise, no walking isn’t enough, same with yoga. How much protein do we really need since we’re being told we don’t eat enough. 🤦🏼
I had to smile as I listened to your discussion. You ladies are sweet and well-intentioned, but wait until YOU are in your sixties after having spent most of your life in high stress jobs, maintaining homes and families, going through divorces, experiencing family deaths and the impact of them, and/or taking care of other people (including parents). It’s a whole different world. You WILL morph into a completely different person physiologically and mentally. I also looked great at your age, and thought I would never look or feel like most “older women.” That was so untrue. At a certain age, no matter what you do, your tiny waists, flat abs, and slim arms will be traits of the past. I was always a gym rat (doing resistance training together with aerobic classes) and/or a dancer, but it DIDN’T MATTER. As you age, you start encountering sleep difficulties because your hormones are naturally out of balance. However, going on HRT involves risk - many doctors won’t prescribe it at all OR will require women to sign disclaimers so you can’t sue them if you develop cancer. The imbalance further spikes cortisol levels, and you develop insulin resistance. Weight gain and fatigue naturally follow. You are too tired to get through your day, let alone lift weights. To summarize - you ladies mean well, but have no first person knowledge of the impact of aging - yet. So, although your conversation is interesting and you make some valid points, it doesn’t have a basis in certain hard core realities that are common to all.
@@nixa9 That may be true, but her ongoing career centers around anti-aging and physical fitness. The vast majority of people in this age bracket are not in a similar position. They’ve been too busy trying to survive, dealing with health issues, and/or helping others do the same to devote so much time and effort to focusing on themselves.
Scale weights taken in an office are important for prescribing medications. The "weight" is needed to calculate drugs, fluids, etc. Therefore, an accurate body weight needs to be done. As you mentioned, muscle weighs more than fat & you can not guess. However, it would be amazing if every office had one of those machines that tell you muscle mass, fat, water, etc.
I absolutely love this conversation. I’m so over the anti aging bandwagon. It upsets me to see young women destroying their naturally beautiful body with cosmetic procedures. I’d love all women to embrace natural beauty and put the focus on becoming the strongest fittest version of ourselves. I’m nearly 50 and been on this journey for years and every year I still age but I feel so much better physically and mentally and every year feel more healthier and happier. This is living my best life 🙏
What about embracing life till the end. We old want to stay on earth for ever... Our body needs love, movement and laughter. No need to get fat after 50 if you enjoy being here. It's an adventure, there is so much out there to learn about. Love yourself and communicate with your body that supports you all your life. Love your family, keep good friends, have compassion, be grateful and caring not only for others but for yourself . And it's never to late to fall in love again. Be the person you were when you were a child. Be like this child...

Thankyou Since I were young I tried to keep young and all the time on the way to get healthy . Bacterial and virus infections and conditions that heal over time . I got rid of most of that caused trouble but still try to reach optimum health but did not specific setback for gaining weight , cholesterol , high blood pressure and all that happens with aging and menopause Still try olive oil in the morning to stay healthy . Until 30''s about skin health after that bone health specific and other health symptoms about aging

It’s really hard to get good sleep with hormone fluctuations. I can’t sleep without my cat even though sometimes she wakes me up lol
Retiring at 61 I decided I was going to work on preserving myself. Now 68 I’ve started intermittent jogging, managing 50 paces of walking and 50 paces of running. This combined with some weight resistance exercises at home, ensuring I get 50g protein daily, eliminating ultra processed foods, sugar & alcohol from my diet and eating organic fruit and veg has had a fantastic impact upon my mood. I feel great and am not on any medication.
Also, because I’m super allergic to sunflower seeds, oil, and lecithin - it was so challenging to figure it out, because it’s in almost everything. Like hair care, skin care products (sunflower oil/helioanthus), protein powders (sunflower lecithin). Anyway, I’ve been amazed at how challenging it it to find pure olive oil, etc.
52:47 My hair started to fall so much when taking creatine. I had to stop, unfortunately. As soon as I stopped, my hair did not fall that much. I am in the peri, so I really couldn't deal with losing my hair that much
Glucose Godness (Jessie Inchauspe) suggests eating vegetables first. She claims that veggie starters reduce the glucose spike off the meal that follows them, then protein. The objective is for the veggie starter to make up about 30% of the meal.
@@Cass-gi4kk I think you have to see what you are leaning towards. If it is easy for you to add protein and difficult to add veggies, it's probably better to start with veggies so you don't leave them out especially the cruciferous ones. If it is easy for you to eat veggies, and you often forget about the protein it is probably better to do the reverse such as eat protein first and then veggies. Another trick is to have one pot meals or omelets that give you everything at once so you don't have to choose. There are really tasty ideas such having a pesto, tomato broccoli omelet. Or a ground beef lasagna and instead of pasta use zucchini. This is so good.
@@Creating2413 that’s why I eat the veggies first. I never start my day with starches. Veggies and proteins always first so I know I got proteins and antioxidants to start the day. It’s a good advice actually I think considering what people usually eat for breakfast.
@@Cass-gi4kk yeah definitely. Sometimes I wonder what people are thinking. I know people who think a bag of doritos is breakfast. 😳. Very sad. I can't do high starch at all. I need healthy fat, protein and low starch veggies. Sometimes I add low sugar fruits but very small quantities like berries, lemon and lime. I think starting with veggies and then adding protein or starting with protein or adding veggies is good depending on what works for the individual.
I’m all about LHS lifting heavy shit however injury is definitely an issue as you get older. I would love for someone to talk about how we continue to build muscle with lighter weight. I’d love to be squatting 250 but that’s not in my cards right now. What do you recommend if you have some tendencies, torque injury when lifting heavy

I have a farm. I definitely have functional fitness and compound moves everyday!! I also want to EXPAND and do even MORE on my farm. So.... I'll definitely be implementing more of these supplements and being more conscientious of using my daily activities to build more power and functionality.
Just have to clear up the incorrect representation of Pilates: In a Pilates class, you will never do 100 (or even 11) repetitions of a movement, with or without weights. Pilates values quality over quantity- in a beginner-level class, you might perform 10 repetitions of a single movement, but as you progress, you should be reducing the number of repetitions to 8, then 5, then maybe 3. The idea is that, as you develop more body-awareness and strength, you perform fewer repetitions of each movement with more efficiency which means that you get more out of each repetition. What you WILL add more of is variety of movements and the complexity of those movements. I am 42 and have been doing Pilates for 14 years and teaching it to others for 12 years. I get told I’m “shredded”. 😂
Big question, JJ is always talking about non starchy vegetables. And yes, I understand, starchy = carbs. Me myself I eat clean too (proteine/veggies/good fats), so no carbs, except sometimes I throw in some kind of beans which I looove eating (and filling !). This due to dr. William Li. He is a big fan of beans, lentils, chick peas. Up to him it helps feed the good gut bacteria and when eating regularly, it even helps with loosing visceral fat. What is your opinion ? Thank you 😊
You've got to do what feels good to you and your body will tell you. That wouldn't work for my body but it does for you. I'm keto carnivore and have a super sensitive system so I'd be a mess. But it sounds like you can feel intuitively what your body thrives on just prioritize your protein.
Food for thought…literally: did you know that during Ramadan, when Muslims fast from dawn to dusk, they break their fast with a date. Almost ALWAYS. It’s a religious and cultural tradition. I had always wondered why but no one ever had a scientific answer until now. The answer from those of wisdom was always something generalized such as “because it’s beneficial” therefore, I’m particularly grateful for this bit of information regarding Allulose . It’s been poking at me from the corner of my brain for decades.
I don't walk everyday because im protecting my skin against uv rays, but i do weights, beginners yoga, squats, plunge, push ups... Im 65 years old. I also eat lots of fruits and veggies and fish and chicken...
I’m getting so turned off by everybody saying that women think they’re going to get big if they lift weights. Maybe back in the day people thought that, nobody thinks that anymore. And everybody wishes they could get cuts but know that it’s hard. So I wish people would just stop saying that women think they’re going to get bulky when they lift. No one thinks that anymore.
I can say first hand that I get upper body bulkiness because I have more upper body muscle that doesn’t need much before I get results. If I’m already overweight I look very husky due to my broad shoulders and muscular arms. I also have more of an athletic build. I think it really depends on the body type of the person.
Everyone is different. I DO get big from lifting heavy weights and I do NoT like it. And I look incredible with Pilates and ballet classes. Look at the ballerinas: they DO build lean muscle and live long and healthy life. Another note: I’m 43 and I look 10 years younger and feel energetic. I do not drink alcohol and my diet is very clean. But once again: I might be an exception.
Why is “anti-aging” a thing? Cause real anti-aging is dying!!! Aging is a gift & I love it!!! Can’t really support this whole anti-aging messaging, especially being promoted by women, even in just the titles of videos.
I am 57. 5'9" and 130lbs. with runner build. Lost about 50lbs since Oct 2023. I walk 5 miles a day, 7 on weekends. I am not breaking records but do break a sweat. I love how invigorating and the mental lift. Been lifting for a couple months. Been shocked at loss of strength. Could see loss of muscle tone in mirror. I have a well defined waist but not completely flat, but not big tummy and no saddlebags. I want to maintain my health, keep my cognitive ability, maintain mobility and stay out of nursing home. I also want more muscle mass so i don't look like frail old woman. Not aiming for perfection but the best for me. Not as concerned about scale but body composition. Also been super inspired by women over 50 that are still ALIVE.
@@juliecastro9021 ??? not worried about it but being proactive to stay healthy. i want to live and not just exist. being decrepit is mostly a choice of decisions we make daily. i used to deliver pharmaceuticals to nursing homes. many are excellent care facilities but most residents would prefer to be in their own homes.
Of course take care of yourself. However, it’s not worth worrying about being in a nursing home NOW! Most people prefer to be in their home of course as they age! .
Your loosing strength because that is too much walking. I walked that much every day, was probably underfed in my 20s when I had no car. I looked and fealt worse. And weaker. There is a balance no matter the age.
@@AR-mu4zq I do carnivore, beef, bacon, butter, eggs and cheese. Definitely not under fed. Main reason i love carnivore is you aren't starving yourself. I don't even consider the walking exercise. I have a desk job so the walking just offsets the hours sitting. I am steadily increasing weights while focusing on full range of motion. I feel stronger too.
I don’t know about the point/term anti aging. I am thinking Pro aging sounds like more aging to me. Anti seems like not aging. But I guess it’s all in how you look at it. Yes we want to age in years for sure, it’s a blessing. But I don’t find the term negative . I am 70 great video I follow much of this myself!
This is very interesting as a postmenopausal woman late fifties, but I have hypothyroid, adrenals are flatlined, cortisol is toast, because I am recovering from Mold Mycotoxin illness..I am on an autoimmune diet ( very restrictive ) and lots of protein which I struggle to eat like red meat - what would JJ think about this in terms of diet and exercise? OH! the Icing on my "health" cake = I have exercise fatigue that sets in 1 hour after a workout that makes me lay down for 1-2 hours.. Total suck lol
💯 agree with the importance of protein intake, especially for women over 35. The trick is what kind of protein. If one starts loading on ribs with BBQ sauce or any other meat with gravy and salad dressings, it's not it. We're talking about cleaning protein and reduction (complete removal is better, but impossible for most) of sugar and starchy foods (bred, pasta, cereals, rice). When we hear about correlation of protein and cancer, it's not about protein itself. The development of cancer and other issues in human body has to do with combination of protein, starch and sugars.
Tl;dw 1 - eat protein first 2 - move around and lift heavy things 3 - sleep through the night Be excited about getting older: maintain your health, and the later years will be the best of your life.
I have fibromyalgia and I used 4 to 5 kg weights when using weights on each hand using only one weight , I would use 10 to 12 kilos . I did build some muscle .
Grip strength is related to all cause mortality because it is associated with heart strength, which you can't strengthen just by doing pull ups. She's grossly oversimplifying which leads me to believe she doesn't understand the full story with some of her claims
The average person simply isn't going to buy flax milk, siggis and koia. Don't speak only to the Whole Foods people. Please speak to the person who is feeding a family on $200 a week and working 40 hours and living in tucson, not San Diego. Average family can't afford a ton of supplements either.
I’ve tried small doses of creatine monohydrate and creatine HCL. Both of them made me retain water which makes my joints swell. My knees have been replaced, and when they swell, I’m miserable.

It’s giving bigger advice about lifting and different aspects to take for women. I always felt mixed about JJ Virgin’s advice. She’s got good fitness info as well as nutrition theory around how much protein, amino acids etc. but her recommendations on getting that are heavy on inflammatory PUFA (fish oil which is particularly immunosuppressive, as well as lots of fish with the same problem + mercury and chicken, pea and even soy protein which is GMO, egg whites which bind testosterone, etc). There are much better options. Beef and lamb, whole eggs (3 eggs have about the same total fat as a small steak and it’s protein is 100% bioavailable-unlike the steak; coconut oil which is metabolized differently than the others, etc.
Great information! As a 59 year old woman, I would love to hear more about the neurological changes for someone who's been sedentary (academic) for too many years. Every time I add exercise, I experience insomnia and have to stop. It feels very defeating to not understand a post-menopausal brain when exercise is introduced.
Shortly before you wake up and around 30 min. after you get up from the bed, there's a spike in cortisol which helps you you wake up and stay awake. Cortisol is also hormone released in stressful situations. Each new exercise (moderate or high intensity) is a stress for the organism and cortisol increases for a while after it. What you can do is train in the morning, avoid caffeine and excessive exercise where your heart is rushing (like running) and concentrate on weight lifting, walking and HIIT. With HIIT cortisol do increase but for a very short time while the effect on the muscles' tone is significant. You also might want to check your cortisol and insulin levels.
@MiraculousAngelTarot I appreciate the input. Interestingly, however, I recently learned that weightlifter can experience nervous system fatigue which can be evidenced by insomnia. To someone like me, getting back into weight lifting after menopause (menopause restructures the brain), the nervous system adapts before the muscles. You are quite correct about the hormonal changes. But there's a neurological change, as well. 🤗

Im 61 an experienced and attractive woman very happy in my own skin and more confident than I was when I was 20. I Eat healthy whole food and exercise a couple of times a week I try to walk everyday. But if I don’t it’s ok.

Hey don’t knock Pilates and it has more of a place than you think. I’m 54 and teach it to women over 65 …it works to build strength, flexibility and stability (keeps me from falling) and I teach women to get off the ground. We use every plane of motion. Maybe you did the “fitness Pilates” that has no sense of awareness on how you move. And….if you’re out of shape Pilates will help you perform strength training better because it’s targets the how you move. Pilates helps you walk better..live better ..,breath better have a more balanced nervous system…etc etc

I agree, Pilates, yoga , and any form of ballet exercises that would include deep stretching and moving your body in various planes are so important. I feel that now women are being told to lift weights , but forget that real stretching is a must for anti-aging as well. Myself I was doing ballet , and Pilates all my life. Lately i noticed some loss of muscles mass, so I decided to shift focus on lifting weight and resistance training. After one year I noticed more pain in my joints, less range of movements, change in posture - all due to tighter muscles. So now I do resistance training but came back to doing good deep pilates and ballet exercises. I feel back to how I was in my 30s.
Thank you, but stop with the term anti aging. There is no such thing. Pro aging, improved aging, healthy aging, happy aging and just plan aging-yes, but the term anti aging implies that aging is a negative condition and needs to be prevented. How lucky are we to have the opportunity to age?!

I love that you covered being able to build strength at home. It's so helpful to dispel the myth that you need to go to the gym and use a bunch of machines or weights to build strength.
Almost all restaurants cut their olive oil with seed oils. Only the most expensive, high end places use 100% quality, single source EVOO. Eating out a lot or getting loads of take out is a disaster.
Even the high end places don't. Not in the 5 star place I worked at anyway. They say it's organic and local but it's not. Pure olive oil is like $35 for a tiny bottle.

At 68, I'm still very strong, lifting heavy materials, with a physically active lifestyle, not a workout routine. I've always been muscular, not slender, with a wonderful hourglass voluptuous body. I'm stronger, have more endurance, and healthier than most people my age, including men. I'm the energizer bunny! Fortunately for me, besides having some great genes from my dad, who was a pro football player, I've always been active, riding bicycles (across the US and Europe), dancing, forest work (chainsaw), and mostly unprocessed, organic, and natural foods since I was 14 years old. Rarely drink alcohol, no drugs, including aspirin, and never smoking anything. Even more important for me, I take care of my own health with naturopathic and homeopathic remedies (which are quickly being blocked by commercial medical interests) and NEVER go to doctors. I've never owned a scale for weighing this body. Daily stretching and some yoga helps keep this body flexible. I live in the forest, away from most RF, and no cellular EMF toxicity. Overall, I listen to the body, have a peaceful and spiritual life, and work my butt (which is firm and round) off every day....chop wood, carry water. Glad your guest is promoting fat-positive and natural image values!
Exactly! Doctors ask me for advice because I look better and have better functional labs and images than they do. Interesting you mentioned homeopathic remedies. I rarely need them but accidents sometimes occur and these remedies have served me better than any conventional medical treatment ever has. People often forget that there were systems in place prior to today’s medical industrial complex. I’m glad they employ people and I make money off of their stocks but have rarely elected to utilize their offerings. I have no need and have more interesting and fulfilling things to do with my time and attention.

Having a wood burner, which is a labour of love, I realised a long time ago that I’d need to keep fit to manage the sawing, collecting and stacking of logs. I’m 68 and do push ups, squats, sit ups etc and intermittent walking / jogging most days so I’m still capable of getting all of the wood I need and am medication free.
Oh this video is awesome!!!! I've been in menopause for over 10 years now, However.... been doing resistance training dumbbell workouts every other day and it's changed my life. I cannot be on HRT hormones due to a clotting disorder discovered in my 20's but it is what it is, working out truly helps my mood, boosts my libido and overall mental and body health. I've lost over 30 pounds and definitely have muscle definition now! I actual wear a regular bathing suit now, no more "skorts" and my husband is loving it. I have my wedding weight back after having two kids. My husband is lifting weights/doing body weight exercises as well and looks more fit then in his 20's. We do not plan on retiring, both work from home which believe me, we WORK, but do have the luxury to work out when we want. No excuses. We walk after breakfast or some other meals when we can - we have a boxer dog - he loves any form of exercise! Even on vacation we get some fun exercise in. I do not like sitting around like a lump - it's boring. I've been overweight before and it's not fun - I will not do that again. I hope to go into older age as healthy as possible.

I’m 45 and I have a 6 and 5 year old. I also work as an ER nurse and I’m more fit than my 30 year old counter parts. I really hate working out persay. Never liked the gym but I stay active. I also cook at home and just eat regular foods. Btw, everyone tells me I look 30 or even in my 20’s. I get this daily. They are always shocked when I say I’m 45. I also used to live in nyc where I walked everywhere.
You're doing the right thing and do not stop - I see often younger people destroying their beautiful bodies that they have. In my 20's I was overweight for about 5 years until I wised up, lost weight before turning 30 and never looked back. I'm now 56 and doing dumb bell work outs every other day - yoga and pilates occasionally, and walking my boxer dog 2-3 times a day. I work from home so this is possible. I eat clean all week and one day a week my husband and I eat out and have a "fun" meal but then it's back to clean eating for the week. This has worked for us for years. You can do it.
Harder once menopuase starts after50 onwards so keep up the good work ❤
In June 2024, I did a JLo challenge. I watched several JLo films for inspiration, then followed her exact diet and exercise routine (stretches, strength training & dancing). I look terrible week 1-2 (increased stress cortisol when you start strength training). I persisted, started to feel good, enjoy it. I got so many compliments this summer ‘you look lovely’, ‘you look sexy’, ‘how old are you? 31, 37?’ I am JLo age. I confirm her healthy lifestyle plays a huge role in her famous figure and glow.
12 hour fast IS fasting. I finish eating my dinner at 8.30 at night and wake up at 6.30 so if I didn't make the effort to wait until I get to work and eat then at 9/9.30 I would only have 10 hour fasting time. Saying it's not fasting is just demotivating. I never eat anything after dinner and wait 2 hours before I eat in the morning. For me that's not easy! 😊
8:30 finishing dinner ? Wow that's late, to late. You should always finish dinner 3-4 hours before bedtime. I eat breakfast about 8-9 am and dinner around 3-5 two large meals a day. Fasting roughly 14-16 hours a day. Works great for me!
But most importantly if you wanna "stay young" have to tend to your soul, and then it may be you find out it's not that important to stay young..

In Ayurveda, there's a saying of "eating until the first burp." If we're eating slowly and mindfully and not shovelling food into our mouths in front of the TV or on our phones, our body will tell us when it's had enough. Becoming aware of when we have that 'first burp' and then either stopping eating then, or having another couple of mouthfuls (and then our body will give us a second burp) is the easiest way I've found to make sure I'm not overeating. Some days it won't happen until I get to the end of the plate, other days it will happen half way through. We need to start tuning into our bodies and paying attention to what it's telling us because we're all individuals and nobody's body is exactly the same as anybody else's. Trusting ourselves and our bodies rather than religiously or fanatically following what someone else is telling us (perhaps using their ideas as guidance) is the only way to really live our best lives.
Over-eating has everything to do with what you are eating. If you eat the proper human food(animals) your saitiated signal will turn on and say enough. You cannot physically overeat once your body is fully noursihed. When I was vegetarian/vegan I was always hunger. Never ever saitiated. Ate all day and felt awful. It wasn't until I started eating animal foods/fats did I feel saitiated. I can eat one meal a day and not feel hungry until the next day. I don't think about food constantly the way I did eating only plant stuff.

Age is a mind set!
Resistance to the inevitable brings a lot of stress. Stress brings illness and attracts chaos to your life. Converting resistance to embrace will do so much good for you. This is what I have realised as I started my journey to 40s.
I keep thinking of Dr Longo, apparently the world’s top longevity expert We have right now. And all he says on protein - That We already eat too much and the more you eat the worse off you are . And that too much is JJ’s Idea of still not enough!
And I just listened to Dr Zach Bush talk on skin health , he’s a microbiome expert, he mentions in his experience those who eat higer protein, especially animal-based, have some of the worst health & he can smell it when one walks in a room , the acids and bitterness that those highly protein foods create in the body
So I’m really not sure if this is the way to go.
I like JJ ‘& she really believes in what she teaches . But Maybe these kinds of people need to stop with extremes and comes back to common sense of our anatomy.

Longo and Bush are tied into the UN Sustainability Goals/Agendas that are promoting/ pushing plant based diets on humanity for nefarious social control reasons. Very big subject, warrants thoughtful, diligent research.
I would argue the quality of the protein makes all the difference. I've switched to grass fed/finished meat, wild caught fish and whole not processed foods. I've added strength training, track my food, and upped my protein. I feel better than I have in two decades - I'm 52 years young!
Growing old is not a disgrace and should be a moment of gratitude in life. The aging phase can be as enjoyable as any other phase in a human child's life.

I don’t find it particularly feminine though, I’m not denying she’s fit and strong, but my immediate reaction is it’s too ‘hard’ looking, both face/neck and arms look scrawny to me, personally I prefer a little body fat along with some muscle tone. Just my personal preference though, each to their own.

I stopped focusing on weight. And started looking at getting stronger and feeling better. My goal was being able to climb the 4 flights of steep steps without get winded and my kegs being weak at my family's home. It's a lot of steps from the water to the house on top cliff side. This last visit was a success. Only up from here.

I feel more weak now in my 40 than what used to to feel when I was in my 20. Every day it’s pushing myself more than what I can. Heavy pain in my back lower back now my face and really poor sleep. Please research hormone replacement therapy if you haven’t yet! I’m 42 and felt crappy for about 2 years. Just started HRT and it is making a huge difference in energy, body pains, mental health etc! Hope that helps!

I wish aging didn't scare me so much. I have tried almost everything to look younger + delay aging as much as possible, anything from face exercises, vitamin C serum, Fraxel, collagen supplements and of course Retin A (7 years straight), home devices and what not. However, nothing made any real difference compared to the high-quality derma pen I purchased for around 100 bucks. Within 3 months of use, my skin has improved DRAMATICALLY. I don't look like I'm 18 again, but definitely not 44 either. My fine lines have disappeared completely, and my nasolabial folds are way less are nonexist (Never had jowls though). People often underestimate the power of wounding and the revolutionary effects it can have on the skin

I DO it myself at home, quote aggressively in places, and lightly in others,,maybe 1x month. I am 63
+1 for kora. I started doing microneedIIing since it started 12 or so years ago. Nobody believe I am 55. They all say I am in my late 30's or early 40's. I assume it works so well because when we get older, our skin gets thinner > then sagging\wrinkles are showing. The wounding kept my skin still thick and youthful.

I just want to look my best at any age. I accept whatever comes with aging like grey hair wrinkles brown spots and thicker waist. I do what I can like dressing for my body, exercise, socializing, and eating home cooked meals. I have learned to apply makeup, taken on new sports and interests.

I loved this talk. Thank you. I want to age strong and gracefully. That being said, I am sometimes overwhelmed with the information we hear. From eating protein first to eating veggies first as a Jessie Inchauspe said, as well as intermittent fasting and other scientific information out there, it can be frustrating. But I learned that I really have to listen to my body while trying different scientific methods. For example, I do not like eating breakfast in the morning, I prefer to start with lunch (I typically just do 2 meals a da)I barely have a snack, unless it’s olives or walnuts of blueberries. So in the end, I’ve decided to stop being overwhelmed, and as JJ said, try one thing, regardless of which advice I hear on the show and see how it makes me feel and what results I get. Maybe a topic for a show could be the best way to deal with so much info in a healthy way. Thank you
I agree, sooo much information. So much of it conflicting, I ‘m going to try and listen to my intuition, it’s hard though. Walking is the best exercise, no walking isn’t enough, same with yoga. How much protein do we really need since we’re being told we don’t eat enough. 🤦🏼
I had to smile as I listened to your discussion. You ladies are sweet and well-intentioned, but wait until YOU are in your sixties after having spent most of your life in high stress jobs, maintaining homes and families, going through divorces, experiencing family deaths and the impact of them, and/or taking care of other people (including parents). It’s a whole different world. You WILL morph into a completely different person physiologically and mentally.
I also looked great at your age, and thought I would never look or feel like most “older women.” That was so untrue.
At a certain age, no matter what you do, your tiny waists, flat abs, and slim arms will be traits of the past.
I was always a gym rat (doing resistance training together with aerobic classes) and/or a dancer, but it DIDN’T MATTER.
As you age, you start encountering sleep difficulties because your hormones are naturally out of balance. However, going on HRT involves risk - many doctors won’t prescribe it at all OR will require women to sign disclaimers so you can’t sue them if you develop cancer. The imbalance further spikes cortisol levels, and you develop insulin resistance. Weight gain and fatigue naturally follow. You are too tired to get through your day, let alone lift weights.
To summarize - you ladies mean well, but have no first person knowledge of the impact of aging - yet. So, although your conversation is interesting and you make some valid points, it doesn’t have a basis in certain hard core realities that are common to all.
But JJ is in her sixties! She just looks 40 😂

@@nixa9 That may be true, but her ongoing career centers around anti-aging and physical fitness. The vast majority of people in this age bracket are not in a similar position. They’ve been too busy trying to survive, dealing with health issues, and/or helping others do the same to devote so much time and effort to focusing on themselves.
I agree that JJ looks amazing, but she is the exception at her age for multiple reasons.

Scale weights taken in an office are important for prescribing medications. The "weight" is needed to calculate drugs, fluids, etc. Therefore, an accurate body weight needs to be done. As you mentioned, muscle weighs more than fat & you can not guess.
However, it would be amazing if every office had one of those machines that tell you muscle mass, fat, water, etc.

It's an adventure, there is so much out there to learn about. Love yourself and communicate with your body that supports you all your life. Love your family, keep good friends, have compassion, be grateful and caring not only for others but for yourself . And it's never to late to fall in love again. Thankyou Since I were young I tried to keep young and all the time on the way to get healthy . Bacterial and virus infections and conditions that heal over time . I got rid of most of that caused trouble but still try to reach optimum health but did not specific setback for gaining weight , cholesterol , high blood pressure and all that happens with aging and menopause
Still try olive oil in the morning to stay healthy . Until 30''s about skin health after that bone health specific and other health symptoms about aging

Retiring at 61 I decided I was going to work on preserving myself. Now 68 I’ve started intermittent jogging, managing 50 paces of walking and 50 paces of running. This combined with some weight resistance exercises at home, ensuring I get 50g protein daily, eliminating ultra processed foods, sugar & alcohol from my diet and eating organic fruit and veg has had a fantastic impact upon my mood. I feel great and am not on any medication.

Also, because I’m super allergic to sunflower seeds, oil, and lecithin - it was so challenging to figure it out, because it’s in almost everything. Like hair care, skin care products (sunflower oil/helioanthus), protein powders (sunflower lecithin). Anyway, I’ve been amazed at how challenging it it to find pure olive oil, etc.

Glucose Godness (Jessie Inchauspe) suggests eating vegetables first. She claims that veggie starters reduce the glucose spike off the meal that follows them, then protein. The objective is for the veggie starter to make up about 30% of the meal.
I do this but everyone reacts differently to glucose spikes and her experiment is her body only.
@@Cass-gi4kk I think you have to see what you are leaning towards. If it is easy for you to add protein and difficult to add veggies, it's probably better to start with veggies so you don't leave them out especially the cruciferous ones. If it is easy for you to eat veggies, and you often forget about the protein it is probably better to do the reverse such as eat protein first and then veggies. Another trick is to have one pot meals or omelets that give you everything at once so you don't have to choose. There are really tasty ideas such having a pesto, tomato broccoli omelet. Or a ground beef lasagna and instead of pasta use zucchini. This is so good.
@@Creating2413 that’s why I eat the veggies first. I never start my day with starches. Veggies and proteins always first so I know I got proteins and antioxidants to start the day. It’s a good advice actually I think considering what people usually eat for breakfast.
@@Cass-gi4kk yeah definitely. Sometimes I wonder what people are thinking. I know people who think a bag of doritos is breakfast. 😳. Very sad. I can't do high starch at all. I need healthy fat, protein and low starch veggies. Sometimes I add low sugar fruits but very small quantities like berries, lemon and lime. I think starting with veggies and then adding protein or starting with protein or adding veggies is good depending on what works for the individual.

Most people in the US today will not make it into their 80s never mind they're 90s! The food and the lifestyle is the culprit.
I have a farm. I definitely have functional fitness and compound moves everyday!! I also want to EXPAND and do even MORE on my farm. So.... I'll definitely be implementing more of these supplements and being more conscientious of using my daily activities to build more power and functionality.
Just have to clear up the incorrect representation of Pilates: In a Pilates class, you will never do 100 (or even 11) repetitions of a movement, with or without weights. Pilates values quality over quantity- in a beginner-level class, you might perform 10 repetitions of a single movement, but as you progress, you should be reducing the number of repetitions to 8, then 5, then maybe 3. The idea is that, as you develop more body-awareness and strength, you perform fewer repetitions of each movement with more efficiency which means that you get more out of each repetition. What you WILL add more of is variety of movements and the complexity of those movements. I am 42 and have been doing Pilates for 14 years and teaching it to others for 12 years. I get told I’m “shredded”. 😂

Big question, JJ is always talking about non starchy vegetables. And yes, I understand, starchy = carbs. Me myself I eat clean too (proteine/veggies/good fats), so no carbs, except sometimes I throw in some kind of beans which I looove eating (and filling !).
This due to dr. William Li. He is a big fan of beans, lentils, chick peas. Up to him it helps feed the good gut bacteria and when eating regularly, it even helps with loosing visceral fat.

You've got to do what feels good to you and your body will tell you. That wouldn't work for my body but it does for you. I'm keto carnivore and have a super sensitive system so I'd be a mess. But it sounds like you can feel intuitively what your body thrives on just prioritize your protein.

Food for thought…literally: did you know that during Ramadan, when Muslims fast from dawn to dusk, they break their fast with a date. Almost ALWAYS. It’s a religious and cultural tradition. I’m getting so turned off by everybody saying that women think they’re going to get big if they lift weights. Maybe back in the day people thought that, nobody thinks that anymore. And everybody wishes they could get cuts but know that it’s hard. So I wish people would just stop saying that women think they’re going to get bulky when they lift. No one thinks that anymore.
I can say first hand that I get upper body bulkiness because I have more upper body muscle that doesn’t need much before I get results. If I’m already overweight I look very husky due to my broad shoulders and muscular arms. I also have more of an athletic build. I think it really depends on the body type of the person.
I tend to lift heavier for lower body and just try to lift more lightly on upper body because I quickly gain muscle on top of
Everyone is different. I DO get big from lifting heavy weights and I do NoT like it. And I look incredible with Pilates and ballet classes. Look at the ballerinas: they DO build lean muscle and live long and healthy life. Another note: I’m 43 and I look 10 years younger and feel energetic. I do not drink alcohol and my diet is very clean. But once again: I might be an exception.

I am 57. 5'9" and 130lbs. with runner build. Lost about 50lbs since Oct 2023. I walk 5 miles a day, 7 on weekends. I am not breaking records but do break a sweat. I love how invigorating and the mental lift. Been lifting for a couple months. Been shocked at loss of strength. Could see loss of muscle tone in mirror. I have a well defined waist but not completely flat, but not big tummy and no saddlebags. I want to maintain my health, keep my cognitive ability, maintain mobility and stay out of nursing home. I also want more muscle mass so i don't look like frail old woman. Not aiming for perfection but the best for me. Not as concerned about scale but body composition.
Also been super inspired by women over 50 that are still ALIVE.
Not all nursing homes or retirement homes are bad. So be healthy however stop worrying about nursing homes.
@@juliecastro9021 ??? not worried about it but being proactive to stay healthy. i want to live and not just exist. being decrepit is mostly a choice of decisions we make daily. i used to deliver pharmaceuticals to nursing homes. many are excellent care facilities but most residents would prefer to be in their own homes.
Of course take care of yourself. However, it’s not worth worrying about being in a nursing home NOW! Most people prefer to be in their home of course as they age! .
Your loosing strength because that is too much walking. I walked that much every day, was probably underfed in my 20s when I had no car. I looked and fealt worse. And weaker. There is a balance no matter the age.
@@AR-mu4zq I do carnivore, beef, bacon, butter, eggs and cheese. Definitely not under fed. Main reason i love carnivore is you aren't starving yourself. I don't even consider the walking exercise. I have a desk job so the walking just offsets the hours sitting. I am steadily increasing weights while focusing on full range of motion. I feel stronger too.

I don’t know about the point/term anti aging. I am thinking Pro aging sounds like more aging to me. Anti seems like not aging. But I guess it’s all in how you look at it. Yes we want to age in years for sure, it’s a blessing. But I don’t find the term negative . I am 70 great video I follow much of this myself!

This is very interesting as a postmenopausal woman late fifties, but I have hypothyroid, adrenals are flatlined, cortisol is toast, because I am recovering from Mold Mycotoxin illness..I am on an autoimmune diet ( very restrictive ) and lots of protein which I struggle to eat like red meat - what would JJ think about this in terms of diet and exercise? OH! the Icing on my "health" cake = I have exercise fatigue that sets in 1 hour after a workout that makes me lay down for 1-2 hours.. Total suck lol

💯 agree with the importance of protein intake, especially for women over 35. The trick is what kind of protein. If one starts loading on ribs with BBQ sauce or any other meat with gravy and salad dressings, it's not it. We're talking about cleaning protein and reduction (complete removal is better, but impossible for most) of sugar and starchy foods (bred, pasta, cereals, rice). When we hear about correlation of protein and cancer, it's not about protein itself. The development of cancer and other issues in human body has to do with combination of protein, starch and sugars.

I have fibromyalgia and I used 4 to 5 kg weights when using weights on each hand using only one weight , I would use 10 to 12 kilos . I did build some muscle .

The average person simply isn't going to buy flax milk, siggis and koia. Don't speak only to the Whole Foods people. Please speak to the person who is feeding a family on $200 a week and working 40 hours and living in tucson, not San Diego. Average family can't afford a ton of supplements either.

I’ve tried small doses of creatine monohydrate and creatine HCL. Both of them made me retain water which makes my joints swell. My knees have been replaced, and when they swell, I’m miserable.
Thank you so much for sharing the tips or other women to live a healthier stronger life. I don’t think that they are saying that Pilates is not beneficial. It’s giving bigger advice about lifting and different aspects to take for women. I want to live a healthier life I want to live longer so, thank you so much for this advice we as women don’t have a lot of female mentors so by getting offended by the advice just shows how little that women support other women.
I always felt mixed about JJ Virgin’s advice. She’s got good fitness info as well as nutrition theory around how much protein, amino acids etc. but her recommendations on getting that are heavy on inflammatory PUFA (fish oil which is particularly immunosuppressive, as well as lots of fish with the same problem + mercury and chicken, pea and even soy protein which is GMO, egg whites which bind testosterone, etc). There are much better options. Beef and lamb, whole eggs (3 eggs have about the same total fat as a small steak and it’s protein is 100% bioavailable-unlike the steak; coconut oil which is metabolized differently than the others, etc.
Great information! As a 59 year old woman, I would love to hear more about the neurological changes for someone who's been sedentary (academic) for too many years. Every time I add exercise, I experience insomnia and have to stop. It feels very defeating to not understand a post-menopausal brain when exercise is introduced.
Shortly before you wake up and around 30 min. after you get up from the bed, there's a spike in cortisol which helps you you wake up and stay awake.
Cortisol is also hormone released in stressful situations.
Each new exercise (moderate or high intensity) is a stress for the organism and cortisol increases for a while after it.
What you can do is train in the morning, avoid caffeine and excessive exercise where your heart is rushing (like running) and concentrate on weight lifting, walking and HIIT. With HIIT cortisol do increase but for a very short time while the effect on the muscles' tone is significant.
You also might want to check your cortisol and insulin levels.
@MiraculousAngelTarot I appreciate the input. Interestingly, however, I recently learned that weightlifter can experience nervous system fatigue which can be evidenced by insomnia. To someone like me, getting back into weight lifting after menopause (menopause restructures the brain), the nervous system adapts before the muscles. You are quite correct about the hormonal changes. But there's a neurological change, as well. 🤗
