Great review Dustin. Love my G1 but may have to get the G2 because of a stupid accident. In February of 2017 my wife dropped my G1 into a creek in Yosemite. Yes, we're still married! It was insured but the company decided to just pay me for it rather than getting it fixed. They reasoned that I could never really trust it again. I figured I didn't have anything to lose so here's what I did. I poured out as much of the creek water as I could then I flushed the lens with distilled water then flushed again with 99% isopropyl alcohol. Then I heated desiccant to 150 degrees and put it and the lens in a Tupperware container for 3 days, changing the desiccant every day. On the 4th day I inspected the lens for spots and could not find any. I tested the lens's electronics on an old 20D (just in case of a short) and it worked fine. Everything seemed to be working so I put it on my 6D and did a load of resolution tests and looked for spots. Absolutely clean. I have used the G1 almost every month since it went swimming and so far it is preforming flawlessly.
That's a great job of resuscitating your lens. It's surprising both what electronics survive sometimes...and the seemingly mild things that kill them sometimes!
Great review Dustin! Got a question for you regarding the VC. I was reading the full review on your website and you mentioned the different modes for the VC which can be set to using the Tap-in Console. You said "Mode 3 does little to stabilize the viewfinder but focuses all the processing power on stabilizing the image at capture. Typically Mode 3 delivers the highest rating of “stops” of compensation." and further down, you gave us two winter images and you said "I was able to achieve fairly reliable results at 1/4th second (2 stops) and did get a few usable results at 1 seconds, but not reliably." Now my question is did you just use the standard VC mode out of the box for your test and opinion or did you set the VC to Mode 3? I've been playing around with mine for two days now with the Tap-in console, this is my night lens and I use it for video shooting most of the time but sometimes I would use it for some night photography and it's been killing me trying to figure out which VC mode to set it to. If I set it to Mode 2 which you mentioned is the preferred mode for video shooting, it seems like it wont do a great job when I'm trying to get those night shots handheld and Mode 3 seems like it wont do the trick for the video and Standard Mode gets my OCD going because I keep thinking it could be better at one of those things and Standard is holding it back! I guess a VC mode button would have been a great little feature like some of their other lenses. Your thoughts please?
That's definitely the downside of having to select the modes through a device that you can't bring along. Yes, Mode 3 is essentially worthless for video. If you plan to do both video and stills in an outing, Mode 1 is your best bet. I used the Standard mode for my tests.
I have a gen 1 and is very happy with it and follows my D810 & D500 everywhere and i have no intentions to change. My lens work well with my Z7 so i have no complains there either.
Great to know, I am debating G1 or G2 to get for my d850 and z6, pretty sure g1 is great and have been seeing many used copy are being release in the 2nd hand market. Yet, I own all G2 version of tamron lenses, 85 1.8, 35 1.8, 2470 2.8, and 70-200, so my OCD kick in and keep on telling me to get the G2 version, omg.
I’m not a serial complimenter and I’m certainly not easily impressed. But having watched several of your review videos, I’ve found your analyses quite thorough, well balanced, and extremely unbiased; all of this to say I’m very grateful for such rare and valuable information. Thank you VERY much.
As far as the switches, I am bad about switching mine on accident when my 70-200 G2 lens brushes up to the side of my leg. That is when I have it on a shoulder strap like one from BlackRapid. But that's NOT the fault of the lens to be clear. Its my fault. I love the feel of the new switches, the have a solid quality feel to them. My solution was simple, I just move the lens collar around to block the switches so my clothing doesnt hang and switch them.... Easy fix.. :-)
I have the Tamron 70-200 and I do have the issue with accidentally changing the switches too. I rotated the tripod collar to cover the switches and that helps.
Lots of food for thought, I own the Mk I version and have been thrilled with its performance to date. I am tempted to upgrade of course, that improved VC being my main motivation given I often have to shoot handheld in less than ideal lighting. Thankyou for your review Dustin 😊
I would like to ask for your advice regarding the Tamron 041 vs the Sigma 14-24 2.8 ART lens. I'm not sure which one i should consider purchasing for landscapes and occasional Real Estate. Thanks for making the videos Dustin. To be honest, your lens review videos are what i take into consideration in addition to review articles when considering a lens for purchase. I bought the Tamron SP 85 and 45 1.8 as a result of your videos on those lenses.
Hi Leon, unless you need the stabilization, I would actually go with the Sigma 14-24. I think it is the better lens overall, and it will work a bit better for real estate.
I shoot live music and I’ve found in many situations the old g1 lens flares and ghosts bad . Also it’s af is slow for action and misses or can I say can’t keep up . And sometimes back focuses in low light high contrast situations. So I think this new lens would serve me better. Get out into the landscape world and I think the g1 is great. I do use the g1 a ton for video and love the vr. And that’s great they improved on the best out there . At least it’s better by a lot over my Nikon 70-200 e fl vr . I struggle heavily with that lens hand held on high mp bodies like the d810 and d850 in low light. With matching the shutter speed and vr on I’d think I’d be ok. This is not always the case. Especially shooting with the d850 not so much with the d810 . Thanks Dustin for your phenomenal work
Great review. I have the G1 version which I bought for my Sony A99m2. Unfortunately the G2 did not come in a Sony mount. It is the only A-mount lens that I continued to use when I switched to the A-7RIV. In fact, I like the lens so much that when I smacked it against a wall by accident last month I paid $450 to get it fixed. I just couldn't bear to part with it. Even on an LAEA3 adapter it is an outstanding performer. Just an observation.
Hello Dustin! This is an old video, I've owned the original 15-30mm for a couple of years at your recommendation and am perfectly happy with it. I find that it is amazingly sharp even wide open and has been a great companion for shooting wide angle scenes such as landscapes, indoors, woodland shots, astro etc... I do think that I could benefit from upgrading to the G2 as I am tempted by the slightly better light transmission especially when shooting astro. I do agree as well that the IS tends to hurt image quality at times in the corners especially at low shutter speeds with the 1st gen lens, leaving very sharp center image with motion blur in parts of the corners. One thing however that I really love about the G1 is the color rendition that is rich, neutral in its temperature and gives the images a lot of character. Do you remember if you the G2 still carried out that advantage in terms of color rendition?
Hi Dustin, thanks for the great review! I upgraded my 70D to a 5d mark IV. We travel a lot and I take a lot of landscape photos with a wide angle lens. I've been stuck trying to decide if the sigma 14-24mm f/2.8 art or this G2 is a better lens! Does the VC make that much of a difference at this focal length? A lot of my photos are hand held & I enjoy astrophotography. I don't want to sacrifice contrast or clarity for VC. Thanks for any advice you can offer.
VC does make a difference...in some situations. It’s not as important at this focal length, though. I like both lenses a lot, actually. I might consider going Sigma myself if I were buying fresh; it’s an excellent lens.
I actually encountered the same issue with the switches when I was testing out the 70-200. When the lens is on a shoulder strap and you start walking, the switches will easily get toggled when the lens moves against your coat etc. Also agree with the plastic being prone to scratching, really takes away the quality feel of these G2 lenses. Otherwise, they’re are great quality, especially when you hold into account their price compared to their competitors’. Since I’m more into landscapes I opted to go for the Nikon f4 lenses.
Would you recommend this tamron 15-30 over the sigma or nikkor 14-24? I'm looking for a new wide angle zoom and those are the three I'm choosing between right now. I'm looking to shoot anything from landscapes and star photography to street and maybe some slight action. Do you recommend one over the others? Thanks for the help.

Outstanding review sir!!! I’m searching for a wide angle for Nikon F mount. This Tamron may be the alternative to Nikons 14-24 f2.8 G? By chance how would you say they compare?
I don't review Nikon, so I can't say with confidence. The general consensus at the time was that this was a very good alternative at a much lower price point, however.
I was forced to upgrade from the g1 to the g2 when I dropped my g1 and crushed it. I love that Lynn despite it's tendency to hunt in lower light. I swear that this g2 has terrible flair problems. Even in interior lights I'm getting flair that I never saw with the g1. I shoot interiors for real estate and for two years using the g1 I've never had to fix nearly as many flare issues. The one thing I do see that improved with g2 was its low light focusing has greatly improved. I would have never upgraded though with my experience so far.
Great finale and review (as usual). You gave me a lot to think about. I own the G1 and it suffers from the flaring problem. That said, I have no complaints about edge sharpness, Stablization, or AF. Maybe that's because of the subject matter I shoot. At the end of the day, it would cost about 700.00 US to upgrade (I can get 500.00 for the G1). Don't know if the feeling justifies the expense.
Now here is what you might think is a question that is a bit "off". After paying close attention to your review of the Tamron 17-35, you seem to judge the resolution (setting aside vignette and distortion) as on par with the 15-30 G2. Now I readily acknowledge these are not the same. That being said, the 17-35 is much lighter, takes conventional filters, has 2.8 (for some of its range) and has good AF and stabilization. What would you say about selecting the 17-35 over the G2 ? Is this completely crazy or just apples and oranges ?... Thanks again Dustin for the great info
@@jaycohen3884 The biggest downsizes to the 17-35 are higher levels of distortion and vignette, much less wide focal length, and obviously both a less sophisticated AF system and no VC. As far as just resolution, however, I think that the 17-35 offers very similar levels of sharpness and much lower levels of lateral CA

You start to watch all these vids and wonder if you made a bad purchase. Does Sigma hold their value and reliability over the years? I own Canon EF lens and they are great. Just wonder what your thoughts are? Thanks. I have also owned this Tamron first gen and loved it but switched over to the Sigma.
I don’t think that third party lenses hold their value as well. I have a couple of Sigma lenses and they have been fine, but I’ve only owned them for a couple of years and can’t speak to long-term reliability.
Dustin, another informative & detailed video! I have the Tamron 10-24, 24-70, 70-200 & 150-600 and Nikon D850. I love all their lenses! However, I know the first one is a DX. Is the investment to upgrade the 10-24 to the G2 15-30 will be significant? And if I make the move, Sigma or Tamron? Thx
VR is nice to have, although I’m more apt to use UWA lenses on my T-pod. In most conditions, the results of the DX 10-24 on my D850 have been very good. Thx Dustin!

The same Problem over here...but..... after seeing this Final review...i understood that the cornersharpness has levelled up to the sigma. .... combined with an Excellent VC......new filtersystem and the possibility voor de tap-in.... I'm going for the tamron.
@@DustinAbbottTWI Can you make a comparison between both the lens and if possible throw the 12-24 in it, with these 3 options available it is very difficult to choose. i shoot interior, and architecture mostly for brands, magazines and designers so going very wide is not important to me but distortion is. If you are looking more for landscapes and want to be able to filter, the Canon 16-35mm F4L IS is hard to argue against. If you want a little wider and don't mind a curved front element, the Sigma 14-24mm F2.8 ART is a great value, as is this lens.
The Irix gives you an aperture advantage, but I think the Canon has better contrast. I would go with the Irix if shooting astro is a priority or if you need the brighter aperture. It's nice that you can still use screw-in filters, too

Hi Dustin, I really wanna buy this lens to use with A7R3 on tripod, however there is one issue. This lens is quite heavy. It’s 1,110g and when combine with either MC-11 176g or Metabones V 143g. That’s almost 1,300g. And since this lens has no tripod collar. I’m very concerned that is the A7R3 mount gonna be able to handle this much weight? And how can we shoot vertically with this lens on tripod? Thank you Dustin.
I've not had any problems with the mount. The lens is pretty squat, so the weight is close the camera. You can shoot vertically, but you do have to have a quality tripod...particularly if you add a front filter system.
It is a great lens but it has one problem. The problem is that when closing the aperture to f5.6 or higher my pics are getting less sharp. I did some tests and discovered that when you close the aperture the lens suffers from focus shift. This only happens with dslr's of course when using phase detection AF. When using liveview the aperture is already closed so no problem there. The work around with phase detection I have is to dial in -15 AF fine tune when using f5.6 or higher. Focus shift is in my opion a general problem so it must affect all copies. I wonder what your experience is.
@@DustinAbbottTWI you really have to pixel peep to see the effect so it took me several weeks before I knew what was happening. But it is there for sure. Focus shift happens with more wide lenses but this one especially. I use this lens mostly on a tripod with live view so I can live with it. For walk around I have enough other lenses like the Nikon 14-24mm. Cheers.
Great review. If possible- I would love to see a long term review for this and the Tamron 24-70 f/2.8 G2, including any improvements adapted onto the newer Canon R5/R6 bodies.

That's tough. I personally would, probably, because the very, very heavy vignette on the 16-35L III is a dealbreaker for some of the situations I use it in.
Hi Mark, my only hesitation is on the video front. A first party lens will get automatic correction for video. The Canon 15-35mm might be a better choice...though more expensive.

@@DustinAbbottTWI I recently did a test myself as well as I could. In my mind the 24 -70 was slightly sharper than the 15-30 at 30mm but and I was shocked to find that a Yongnuo 35mm plastic fantastic £40 including postage from China was even sharper. Aberation etc wasn't checked for. I'm thinking I may need the Tamrons adjusted. What shocked me even more was that I took the same picture with a Oneplus5 smartphone and it blew them all out of the water. This was with a focus distance of around 18" in quite low light but not dark and using various settings of aperture, iso, shutter speed etc. I tried everything to try and beat the OnePlus.
Im thinking of getting this over canon 16-35 2.8 iii mainly for video work. My issue would be autofocus hunting at low light as there are reports it is common with g2 series. But not sure if it is same here since it has dual mpu..
All of the G2 lenses have the dual MPU. I didn't see hunting issues in low light, but neither have I seen it with other G2 lenses (one of which I own).
I would agree with Dustin. Sigma probably has a slight edge. I've been extremely impressed by it in every way. I came from owning a nikon 14-24 2.8. And yes it truly is a masterpiece. I just got the fotodiox wonderpana filter kit for it so i can't wait to shoot more sunsets with it! You will totally love the feel and look of the sigma 14-24 2.8 if I may add. It's just a beautiful lens to hold!
I'm torn. I think I like IQ a hair better on the Sigma, but the Tamron has VC, which could be important for some users. It's not an easy choice, but I don't think there is a bad choice between the two.

does this lens still focus breath and also show incorrect focal lengths? The G1 version was more of a 16mm and an F3.2 it wasnt a true 15 nor was a true 2.8, which is why i switched to the nikon 14-24. I was hoping this new one would have fixed it.
I've that rumor many times, but I've compared it to many, many lenses and not found that to be true. Someone on the internet made those statements, but they were unfounded. Someone may have confused T-Stop (light transmission) with F-stop (aperture diameter). The G2 has a little better light transmission and is the same focal length - which is as wide at 15mm as either of the 15mm primes I have on hand and clearly wider than any of the 16-35mm zooms I've compared it to (three of them).
Hello Dustin, It was a great review. Thank you so much. I am a landscape photographer. I used to have Tamron 15-30mm g1 version. I sold it. Corner sharpness of that is a little bit weak. While shooting mountain lakes (Glacier lakes), waterfalls sometimes I need wider focal length. So I need to make a right decision for me. Tamron G2 has 2 advantages compared to Sigma 14-24 art: 1)Lighter 2)has VC. Heaviness is not so important in my opinion. VC is nice, but I am not sure if it is necessary in my works. (while doing longexposure works, we turn the VC/IS off on Tripod in some cases for optimal sharpness) Someone asked this question to you however I also want to ask my question in a different perspective, if possible. In terms of Sharpness (across the frame), AF performance, micro contrast, astro photography, Flare performance (Sunburst), which one shall I choose? I want to learn your valuable opinions please.

I have 3 Tamron G2 lens. I have issues with the 150-600 and the 70-200 buttons. I do some trekking and "out of trails" mountain walks and when I need to shoot fast half of the times the VC or the AF/MF are not in the desired position. The VC mode often switches too but that isn't a huge deal. Sometimes I use adhesive tape to lock the buttons. Even with the camera hanging in the Capture from Peak Design and attached to my backpack shoulder strap some buttons switches if not secure with that adhesive tape. But I still like them anyway. They are good lens.
@@DustinAbbottTWI No plans there. One thing I noticed (and a couple in sale sections) is the Sigma 14-24 has a fixed hood. If you drop it or something, you can't just buy a new hood. I see a few of them for sale because of missing chunks in the hood. That would be a bad point!

It isn't. I've tested it next to many 15mm lenses, and I find it frames basically the same. It's much wider than the Canon 16-35mm zooms...all of them.

@@thecomicexplorer8107 1 mm can not affect as much a job as it is 1mm as Dustin said. I worked with a rented Nikon 3 days. Very good lens but i worked with it only indoors and I did not see the issues it has with the light. With Tamron I will win the stabilizer that I am interested in for video and handheld use, while 15-30 will allow me to do much more because of + 24-30. Now if anyone really thinks that needs a really professional camera lens for architectural photography, let's look at a tilt shift and let's not worry about 1mm.

SO SHOULD I GO WITH SOME 15 TO 30 LENS OR I JUST BUY A ROKINON 12MM F2.8 WHICH ON CROP MODES CAN PROVIDE 15 AND 19 AS WELL..

Looks like a great lens. Any idea if Tamron will be releasing a Sony wide angle lens soon? Love their prices and quality, but that lens with an adapter will be pretty big on sony bodies.
That's my sincere hope. I know from my contacts that a number of new Sony E-mount lenses are in development, but I'm not at liberty to comment further.
@@DustinAbbottTWI Be careful with that lens. A friend of mine had to send the a7iii body for repair as it was freezing up due to that lens and one day he was not able to turn it on after camera restart.

I think that is a tough decision that comes down to your personal preferences. Both are excellent lenses. How important is having the VC to you? Do you actually need 14mm? These are the key questions.
I did a thorough one between the G1 of this lens and the Canon. I won't have the time to revisit all of that again. You can take the information from this review and that comparison and draw a conclusion, however.
hey i have enough information now about photography and i really appreciate everything you have done for me. well i have notice f1.8 is better but i'm going to try out a few lenses tomorrow at my buddy house and see how good it does on my old camera the 10.1 megapixel one. i'm going to buy the canon 50mm from amazon and deal with that for awhile and then i will look at the tamron 35-150 i heard a lot of good things about that lens and then i heard good things about the tamron 17-35 and i'm also hearing good things about the sigma 18-35. he have a nice camera bag and he have 2 cameras and 4 lenses 1 full frame and 1 crop sensor that's cool. he was showing me the difference between full frame and crop and i love what i'm hearing with the full frame one. but i will definitely buy the canon 80d and the canon 6d and i'm done 3 cameras is all you need and i will see which one i will use the most lol. i already have an tamron 18-200 and i want the tamron 35-150 and the 50mm and the tamron 15-30 and the 10-18 that's 5 lens but i will see which ones i will decide to go with. so with those lenses i mention i want you to tell me what you think about those nices lenses
@Foto4Max I had the 15-30 and traded for the GM! The GM is much lighter and smaller especially as you don't need the adapter, I would stick with the Sony and I know it costs more but the A7 body is too small for this front heavy lens in my opinion, but in terms of image quality before i sold the Tamron I did feel they are close in image quality, nothing you can see unless you do serious pixel peeping for a living
Or something purpose designed for FE. I do think the success of the 28-75 will spur more development. I fully anticipate several FE mount releases in 2019 from Tamron.
Ryan, I typically do use MF. In this case, however, I was actually testing the continuous AF on a new camera while I did the episode. Call it multitasking.
That lens is actually made for the Sony "A" mount, a system that Sony no longer invests in...However, i believe that the Sony SLT camera system will return because it is a great equalizer, it fits well between the mirrorless and non-mirrorless camera system....In my opinion, the Sony SLT camera's offer much better quality.....Sony SLT Cameras are, Example, Sony a99/2, a77/2, etc.
Nice lens Dustin, however, at $399.00, i will stay with my Sigma 10-20 constant f3.5 . because mine is much lighter and smaller and gives me very excellent results....No question about it, Tamron and Sigma have surpassed the Name Brands lenses......
BIG WARNING: Don't buy this lens if you have a Canon RF Cinema camera! I have the R5C and the AF doesn't work in Video mode. It is very frustrating and I'll be returning it. Aparantly it is a known issue with Tamron Lenses not playing nice with those cameras. In DPReview forum someone said that Tamron told him 'they don't test their lenses on Canon cinema cameras'.

Nice final review, but I would much rather get the Canon 16-35 f/4 IS USM. This looks so ugly and double the weight and that's where the buck stops for me! More expensive than the Canon f/4 as well! Why do these Tamrons have to be so heavy and have no style whatsoever .. you need to be on extra protein just to carry these around which is insane especially when you're trekking.
Interesting. I owned the previous version of this lens and it was fantastic. I have all kinds of amazing images in my catalog from it. But yes, it is definitely larger and heavier, though it does have a maximum aperture twice that of the Canon.
@@DustinAbbottTWI I do not doubt the quality of images at all like u say, but this thing is 1.1kg and the Canon is 600gm! Most landscapes are shot at apertures greater than f4 and as long ur not shooting at very low light hours one would be fine with f4. For bokeh one should use much faster lenses, 2.8 is neither here nor there, it is mainly a light thing. The Canon 16-35 f4 beats all of the other Canon 16-35 lenses, including the 2.8s for sharpness is what is out there. The price between high end Tamrons and some low end gems of Canon are at the same level (in this case Canon is cheaper!), without all the random AF issues of third party lenses which is another insanity to contend with. I think though that most Tamrons compete on price well but one has to look closely at horses for courses and it is increasingly not obvious at all. You are doing a great service by throwing so much light on to the photo community for us then to learn and make our own well informed choices according to our needs. @@DustinAbbottTWI By the way, with 40 and 60MP full frames out there and heading towards 100 presumably, there must be a reason for this push! Images are arguably better, not just for printing! This is a topic that we need more light on. With high MP bodies combined with the really good sharp lenses, I think it is going to be another level!

And sometimes back focuses in low light high contrast situations. So I think this new lens would serve me better. Get out into the landscape world and I think the g1 is great. I do use the g1 a ton for video and love the vr. And that’s great they improved on the best out there . At least it’s better by a lot over my Nikon 70-200 e fl vr . I struggle heavily with that lens hand held on high mp bodies like the d810 and d850 in low light. With matching the shutter speed and vr on I’d think I’d be ok. This is not always the case. Love my G1 but may have to get the G2 because of a stupid accident.
In February of 2017 my wife dropped my G1 into a creek in Yosemite. Yes, we're still married!
It was insured but the company decided to just pay me for it rather than getting it fixed. They reasoned that I could never really trust it again.
I figured I didn't have anything to lose so here's what I did.
I poured out as much of the creek water as I could then I flushed the lens with distilled water then flushed again with 99% isopropyl alcohol. Then I heated desiccant to 150 degrees and put it and the lens in a Tupperware container for 3 days, changing the desiccant every day. On the 4th day I inspected the lens for spots and could not find any. I tested the lens's electronics on an old 20D (just in case of a short) and it worked fine. Everything seemed to be working so I put it on my 6D and did a load of resolution tests and looked for spots. Absolutely clean. I have used the G1 almost every month since it went swimming and so far it is preforming flawlessly.
That's a great job of resuscitating your lens. It's surprising both what electronics survive sometimes...and the seemingly mild things that kill them sometimes!

Great review Dustin! Got a question for you regarding the VC. I was reading the full review on your website and you mentioned the different modes for the VC which can be set to using the Tap-in Console. You said "Mode 3 does little to stabilize the viewfinder but focuses all the processing power on stabilizing the image at capture. Typically Mode 3 delivers the highest rating of “stops” of compensation." and further down, you gave us two winter images and you said "I was able to achieve fairly reliable results at 1/4th second (2 stops) and did get a few usable results at 1 seconds, but not reliably." Now my question is did you just use the standard VC mode out of the box for your test and opinion or did you set the VC to Mode 3? I've been playing around with mine for two days now with the Tap-in console, this is my night lens and I use it for video shooting most of the time but sometimes I would use it for some night photography and it's been killing me trying to figure out which VC mode to set it to. If I set it to Mode 2 which you mentioned is the preferred mode for video shooting, it seems like it wont do a great job when I'm trying to get those night shots handheld and Mode 3 seems like it wont do the trick for the video and Standard Mode gets my OCD going because I keep thinking it could be better at one of those things and Standard is holding it back! I guess a VC mode button would have been a great little feature like some of their other lenses. Your thoughts please?
That's definitely the downside of having to select the modes through a device that you can't bring along. Yes, Mode 3 is essentially worthless for video. If you plan to do both video and stills in an outing, Mode 1 is your best bet. I used the Standard mode for my tests.
I have a gen 1 and is very happy with it and follows my D810 & D500 everywhere and i have no intentions to change. My lens work well with my Z7 so i have no complains there either.

Great to know, I am debating G1 or G2 to get for my d850 and z6, pretty sure g1 is great and have been seeing many used copy are being release in the 2nd hand market.
Yet, I own all G2 version of tamron lenses, 85 1.8, 35 1.8, 2470 2.8, and 70-200, so my OCD kick in and keep on telling me to get the G2 version, omg.

As far as the switches, I am bad about switching mine on accident when my 70-200 G2 lens brushes up to the side of my leg. That is when I have it on a shoulder strap like one from BlackRapid. But that's NOT the fault of the lens to be clear. Its my fault. I love the feel of the new switches, the have a solid quality feel to them. My solution was simple, I just move the lens collar around to block the switches so my clothing doesnt hang and switch them.... Easy fix.. :-)

I have the Tamron 70-200 and I do have the issue with accidentally changing the switches too. I rotated the tripod collar to cover the switches and that helps.

Lots of food for thought, I own the Mk I version and have been thrilled with its performance to date. I am tempted to upgrade of course, that improved VC being my main motivation given I often have to shoot handheld in less than ideal lighting. Thankyou for your review Dustin 😊
I would say the improved AF and VC are the two biggest selling points (the improved build and IQ tweaks are icing on the cake)
I would like to ask for your advice regarding the Tamron 041 vs the Sigma 14-24 2.8 ART lens. I'm not sure which one i should consider purchasing for landscapes and occasional Real Estate. Hi Leon, unless you need the stabilization, I would actually go with the Sigma 14-24. I think it is the better lens overall, and it will work a bit better for real estate.

Great review. I have the G1 version which I bought for my Sony A99m2. Unfortunately the G2 did not come in a Sony mount. It is the only A-mount lens that I continued to use when I switched to the A-7RIV. In fact, I like the lens so much that when I smacked it against a wall by accident last month I paid $450 to get it fixed. I just couldn't bear to part with it. Even on an LAEA3 adapter it is an outstanding performer. Just an observation.

Hello Dustin! This is an old video, I've owned the original 15-30mm for a couple of years at your recommendation and am perfectly happy with it. I find that it is amazingly sharp even wide open and has been a great companion for shooting wide angle scenes such as landscapes, indoors, woodland shots, astro etc... I do think that I could benefit from upgrading to the G2 as I am tempted by the slightly better light transmission especially when shooting astro. I do agree as well that the IS tends to hurt image quality at times in the corners especially at low shutter speeds with the 1st gen lens, leaving very sharp center image with motion blur in parts of the corners. One thing however that I really love about the G1 is the color rendition that is rich, neutral in its temperature and gives the images a lot of character. Do you remember if you the G2 still carried out that advantage in terms of color rendition?
It's been a few years, obviously, but I don't recall the optical quality being degraded in the G2 version.
Hi Dustin, thanks for the great review! I upgraded my 70D to a 5d mark IV. We travel a lot and I take a lot of landscape photos with a wide angle lens. I've been stuck trying to decide if the sigma 14-24mm f/2.8 art or this G2 is a better lens! Does the VC make that much of a difference at this focal length? A lot of my photos are hand held & I enjoy astrophotography. I don't want to sacrifice contrast or clarity for VC. Thanks for any advice you can offer.
VC does make a difference...in some situations. It’s not as important at this focal length, though. I like both lenses a lot, actually. I might consider going Sigma myself if I were buying fresh; it’s an excellent lens.
I actually encountered the same issue with the switches when I was testing out the 70-200. When the lens is on a shoulder strap and you start walking, the switches will easily get toggled when the lens moves against your coat etc. Also agree with the plastic being prone to scratching, really takes away the quality feel of these G2 lenses. Otherwise, they’re are great quality, especially when you hold into account their price compared to their competitors’.
Since I’m more into landscapes I opted to go for the Nikon f4 lenses.
I think Tamron would be better to stick with a flocking of some kind on the plastic bits.
Would you recommend this tamron 15-30 over the sigma or nikkor 14-24? I'm looking for a new wide angle zoom and those are the three I'm choosing between right now. I'm looking to shoot anything from landscapes and star photography to street and maybe some slight action. Do you recommend one over the others? Thanks for the help.

Outstanding review sir!!! I’m searching for a wide angle for Nikon F mount. This Tamron may be the alternative to Nikons 14-24 f2.8 G? By chance how would you say they compare?
I don't review Nikon, so I can't say with confidence. The general consensus at the time was that this was a very good alternative at a much lower price point, however.
I was forced to upgrade from the g1 to the g2 when I dropped my g1 and crushed it. I love that Lynn despite it's tendency to hunt in lower light. I swear that this g2 has terrible flair problems. Even in interior lights I'm getting flair that I never saw with the g1. I shoot interiors for real estate and for two years using the g1 I've never had to fix nearly as many flare issues. The one thing I do see that improved with g2 was its low light focusing has greatly improved. I would have never upgraded though with my experience so far.
That's surprising, actually. While I didn't find the G2 significantly improved, I did find it improved by a small amount.
Great finale and review (as usual). You gave me a lot to think about. I own the G1 and it suffers from the flaring problem. That said, I have no complaints about edge sharpness, Stablization, or AF. Maybe that's because of the subject matter I shoot. At the end of the day, it would cost about 700.00 US to upgrade (I can get 500.00 for the G1). Don't know if the feeling justifies the expense.
That's the challenge, for sure. If you aren't discontent with what you have, then it's hard to justify the expense to upgrade.
Now here is what you might think is a question that is a bit "off". After paying close attention to your review of the Tamron 17-35, you seem to judge the resolution (setting aside vignette and distortion) as on par with the 15-30 G2. Now I readily acknowledge these are not the same. That being said, the 17-35 is much lighter, takes conventional filters, has 2.8 (for some of its range) and has good AF and stabilization. What would you say about selecting the 17-35 over the G2 ? Is this completely crazy or just apples and oranges ?... Thanks again Dustin for the great info
@@jaycohen3884 The biggest downsizes to the 17-35 are higher levels of distortion and vignette, much less wide focal length, and obviously both a less sophisticated AF system and no VC. As far as just resolution, however, I think that the 17-35 offers very similar levels of sharpness and much lower levels of lateral CA

I don’t think that third party lenses hold their value as well. I have a couple of Sigma lenses and they have been fine, but I’ve only owned them for a couple of years and can’t speak to long-term reliability.

Dustin, another informative & detailed video! I have the Tamron 10-24, 24-70, 70-200 & 150-600 and Nikon D850. I love all their lenses! However, I know the first one is a DX. Is the investment to upgrade the 10-24 to the G2 15-30 will be significant? And if I make the move, Sigma or Tamron? Thx
I do think the 15-30 is a more compelling lens than the 10-24, but the question about the 14-24 ART vs Tamron is tough. How important is VR to you?
VR is nice to have, although I’m more apt to use UWA lenses on my T-pod. In most conditions, the results of the DX 10-24 on my D850 have been very good. Thx Dustin!

@@DustinAbbottTWI Can you make a comparison between both the lens and if possible throw the 12-24 in it, with these 3 options available it is very difficult to choose. i shoot interior, and architecture mostly for brands, magazines and designers so going very wide is not important to me but distortion is.

If you are looking more for landscapes and want to be able to filter, the Canon 16-35mm F4L IS is hard to argue against. If you want a little wider and don't mind a curved front element, the Sigma 14-24mm F2.8 ART is a great value, as is this lens.

The Irix gives you an aperture advantage, but I think the Canon has better contrast. I would go with the Irix if shooting astro is a priority or if you need the brighter aperture. It's nice that you can still use screw-in filters, too

I don't believe that it is. The G2 is really strong in the center portion of the frame; that's where it wins.

That’s ultimately up to you. The G2 is the more complete lens, but the major improvements are to AF and build, less to IQ
Hi Dustin, I really wanna buy this lens to use with A7R3 on tripod, however there is one issue. This lens is quite heavy. It’s 1,110g and when combine with either MC-11 176g or Metabones V 143g. That’s almost 1,300g. And since this lens has no tripod collar. I’m very concerned that is the A7R3 mount gonna be able to handle this much weight? And how can we shoot vertically with this lens on tripod? Thank you Dustin.
I've not had any problems with the mount. The lens is pretty squat, so the weight is close the camera. You can shoot vertically, but you do have to have a quality tripod...particularly if you add a front filter system.
It is a great lens but it has one problem. The problem is that when closing the aperture to f5.6 or higher my pics are getting less sharp. I did some tests and discovered that when you close the aperture the lens suffers from focus shift. This only happens with dslr's of course when using phase detection AF. When using liveview the aperture is already closed so no problem there. The work around with phase detection I have is to dial in -15 AF fine tune when using f5.6 or higher. Focus shift is in my opion a general problem so it must affect all copies. I wonder what your experience is.
I didn't observe that, but it has also been quite a number of years since I did this review and it was a loaner...I never owned it.
@@DustinAbbottTWI you really have to pixel peep to see the effect so it took me several weeks before I knew what was happening. But it is there for sure. Focus shift happens with more wide lenses but this one especially. I use this lens mostly on a tripod with live view so I can live with it. For walk around I have enough other lenses like the Nikon 14-24mm. Cheers.

That's tough. I personally would, probably, because the very, very heavy vignette on the 16-35L III is a dealbreaker for some of the situations I use it in.

Hi Mark, my only hesitation is on the video front. A first party lens will get automatic correction for video. The Canon 15-35mm might be a better choice...though more expensive.

@@DustinAbbottTWI I recently did a test myself as well as I could. In my mind the 24 -70 was slightly sharper than the 15-30 at 30mm but and I was shocked to find that a Yongnuo 35mm plastic fantastic £40 including postage from China was even sharper. Aberation etc wasn't checked for. I'm thinking I may need the Tamrons adjusted. What shocked me even more was that I took the same picture with a Oneplus5 smartphone and it blew them all out of the water. This was with a focus distance of around 18" in quite low light but not dark and using various settings of aperture, iso, shutter speed etc. I tried everything to try and beat the OnePlus.
Would this lens be good for an interior real estate photography?
Fairly good, though something like the Sigma 14-24mm F2.8 might be a bit better. A little wider and a bit less distortion.
Im thinking of getting this over canon 16-35 2.8 iii mainly for video work. My issue would be autofocus hunting at low light as there are reports it is common with g2 series. But not sure if it is same here since it has dual mpu..
All of the G2 lenses have the dual MPU. I didn't see hunting issues in low light, but neither have I seen it with other G2 lenses (one of which I own).

It's not a great gimbal lens. Too big, so you lose the flexibility of how far you can rotate it.

I would agree with Dustin. Sigma probably has a slight edge. I've been extremely impressed by it in every way. I came from owning a nikon 14-24 2.8. And yes it truly is a masterpiece. I just got the fotodiox wonderpana filter kit for it so i can't wait to shoot more sunsets with it! You will totally love the feel and look of the sigma 14-24 2.8 if I may add. It's just a beautiful lens to hold!

The short answer is yes. I wouldn't call one lens better than the other in many metrics, but the Tamron has the advantage of F2.8

does this lens still focus breath and also show incorrect focal lengths? The G1 version was more of a 16mm and an F3.2 it wasnt a true 15 nor was a true 2.8, which is why i switched to the nikon 14-24. I was hoping this new one would have fixed it.
I've that rumor many times, but I've compared it to many, many lenses and not found that to be true. Someone on the internet made those statements, but they were unfounded. Someone may have confused T-Stop (light transmission) with F-stop (aperture diameter). The G2 has a little better light transmission and is the same focal length - which is as wide at 15mm as either of the 15mm primes I have on hand and clearly wider than any of the 16-35mm zooms I've compared it to (three of them).

I am a landscape photographer. I used to have Tamron 15-30mm g1 version. I sold it. Corner sharpness of that is a little bit weak. While shooting mountain lakes (Glacier lakes), waterfalls sometimes I need wider focal length. So I need to make a right decision for me. Tamron G2 has 2 advantages compared to Sigma 14-24 art: 1)Lighter 2)has VC.
Heaviness is not so important in my opinion. VC is nice, but I am not sure if it is necessary in my works. (while doing longexposure works, we turn the VC/IS off on Tripod in some cases for optimal sharpness)
Someone asked this question to you however I also want to ask my question in a different perspective, if possible.
In terms of Sharpness (across the frame), AF performance, micro contrast, astro photography, Flare performance (Sunburst), which one shall I choose? I want to learn your valuable opinions please.
I would be personally tempted to go with the Simga 14-24 ART. I feel like it was a really excellent lens.

I have 3 Tamron G2 lens. I have issues with the 150-600 and the 70-200 buttons. I do some trekking and "out of trails" mountain walks and when I need to shoot fast half of the times the VC or the AF/MF are not in the desired position. The VC mode often switches too but that isn't a huge deal. Sometimes I use adhesive tape to lock the buttons. Even with the camera hanging in the Capture from Peak Design and attached to my backpack shoulder strap some buttons switches if not secure with that adhesive tape. But I still like them anyway. They are good lens.

Hello again! Do you find IS is needed if trying to hand hold this one vs the Sigma 14-24? Could the Sigma be okay without the IS hand holding it?
As long as you aren't trying to do handheld video, then absolutely.
@@DustinAbbottTWI No plans there. One thing I noticed (and a couple in sale sections) is the Sigma 14-24 has a fixed hood. If you drop it or something, you can't just buy a new hood. I see a few of them for sale because of missing chunks in the hood. That would be a bad point!

Thank you. May I ask - Did you see if there is video AF-C with mc11 and A7R3? I adapted my sigma 24 1.4 with mc11 on a7r3. - it's loud, but the focus is precise in AFC
Video AF is unreliable with the Tamron. It doesn't consistently focus. Essentially only Sigma lenses work reasonable well for video AF when adapted.
Would you say the Canon version, too, has issues with Movie servo AF when adapted to EOS R, like focus hunting or such? Any difference in this regard between this lens and the v.1 that you may have noticed? Many thanks.

Hi Dustin. Is it true that the 15mm of Tamron 15-30mm is closer to 16mm or not?
It isn't. I've tested it next to many 15mm lenses, and I find it frames basically the same. It's much wider than the Canon 16-35mm zooms...all of them.

@@thecomicexplorer8107 1 mm can not affect as much a job as it is 1mm as Dustin said. I worked with a rented Nikon 3 days. Very good lens but i worked with it only indoors and I did not see the issues it has with the light. With Tamron I will win the stabilizer that I am interested in for video and handheld use, while 15-30 will allow me to do much more because of + 24-30. Now if anyone really thinks that needs a really professional camera lens for architectural photography, let's look at a tilt shift and let's not worry about 1mm.

If you like your existing Tamron, I would recommend purchasing the 15-30. It's a very high resolution lens and will be a better match for your camera.

It works well in low light...though that will depend a lot on your camera body.

Looks like a great lens. Any idea if Tamron will be releasing a Sony wide angle lens soon? Love their prices and quality, but that lens with an adapter will be pretty big on sony bodies.
That's my sincere hope. I know from my contacts that a number of new Sony E-mount lenses are in development, but I'm not at liberty to comment further.

It did a little. I was testing the new Samyang AF 35mm F1.4 on the Sony a7R3, and the AF is good but still not perfect.

@@DustinAbbottTWI Be careful with that lens. A friend of mine had to send the a7iii body for repair as it was freezing up due to that lens and one day he was not able to turn it on after camera restart.

I think that is a tough decision that comes down to your personal preferences. Both are excellent lenses. How important is having the VC to you? Do you actually need 14mm? These are the key questions.
Will you do a comparisson between this lense and the canon 16-35 f2.8 IS USM III? I'd realy like to see that since I cant decide on which one to buy
I did a thorough one between the G1 of this lens and the Canon. I won't have the time to revisit all of that again. You can take the information from this review and that comparison and draw a conclusion, however.

hey i have enough information now about photography and i really appreciate everything you have done for me. well i have notice f1.8 is better but i'm going to try out a few lenses tomorrow at my buddy house and see how good it does on my old camera the 10.1 megapixel one. i'm going to buy the canon 50mm from amazon and deal with that for awhile and then i will look at the tamron 35-150 i heard a lot of good things about that lens and then i heard good things about the tamron 17-35 and i'm also hearing good things about the sigma 18-35. he have a nice camera bag and he have 2 cameras and 4 lenses 1 full frame and 1 crop sensor that's cool. he was showing me the difference between full frame and crop and i love what i'm hearing with the full frame one. but i will definitely buy the canon 80d and the canon 6d and i'm done 3 cameras is all you need and i will see which one i will use the most lol. i already have an tamron 18-200 and i want the tamron 35-150 and the 50mm and the tamron 15-30 and the 10-18 that's 5 lens but i will see which ones i will decide to go with. so with those lenses i mention i want you to tell me what you think about those nices lenses
does it hurt image quality using VR on tripod?
It really depends on the lens and how "smart" the IS/VR system is. I always turn it off, myself.

How important is image stabilization to your work? That's the primary reason I would go Tamron. I like the Sigma a little better.

I agree that I wish Tamron would make their own Sony adapter. I haven't reviewed the GM lens.
@Foto4Max I had the 15-30 and traded for the GM! The GM is much lighter and smaller especially as you don't need the adapter, I would stick with the Sony and I know it costs more but the A7 body is too small for this front heavy lens in my opinion, but in terms of image quality before i sold the Tamron I did feel they are close in image quality, nothing you can see unless you do serious pixel peeping for a living

Sadly, TAMRON has discontinued this lens as of 12/2021.
It seems like Tamron is slowly phasing out their support of traditional DSLR mounts and is focusing on their mirrorless lenses.

Just a constructive comment, turn off that AF when you shoot. Very distracting seeing your lens continually pull focus while you are talking
Ryan, I typically do use MF. In this case, however, I was actually testing the continuous AF on a new camera while I did the episode. Call it multitasking.

That lens is actually made for the Sony "A" mount, a system that Sony no longer invests in...However, i believe that the Sony SLT camera system will return because it is a great equalizer, it fits well between the mirrorless and non-mirrorless camera system....In my opinion, the Sony SLT camera's offer much better quality.....Sony SLT Cameras are, Example, Sony a99/2, a77/2, etc.

Nice lens Dustin, however, at $399.00, i will stay with my Sigma 10-20 constant f3.5 . because mine is much lighter and smaller and gives me very excellent results....No question about it, Tamron and Sigma have surpassed the Name Brands lenses......
BIG WARNING: Don't buy this lens if you have a Canon RF Cinema camera! I have the R5C and the AF doesn't work in Video mode. It is very frustrating and I'll be returning it. Aparantly it is a known issue with Tamron Lenses not playing nice with those cameras. In DPReview forum someone said that Tamron told him 'they don't test their lenses on Canon cinema cameras'.

Nice final review, but I would much rather get the Canon 16-35 f/4 IS USM. This looks so ugly and double the weight and that's where the buck stops for me! More expensive than the Canon f/4 as well! Why do these Tamrons have to be so heavy and have no style whatsoever .. you need to be on extra protein just to carry these around which is insane especially when you're trekking.
Interesting. I owned the previous version of this lens and it was fantastic. I have all kinds of amazing images in my catalog from it. But yes, it is definitely larger and heavier, though it does have a maximum aperture twice that of the Canon.
@@DustinAbbottTWI I do not doubt the quality of images at all like u say, but this thing is 1.1kg and the Canon is 600gm! Most landscapes are shot at apertures greater than f4 and as long ur not shooting at very low light hours one would be fine with f4. For bokeh one should use much faster lenses, 2.8 is neither here nor there, it is mainly a light thing. The Canon 16-35 f4 beats all of the other Canon 16-35 lenses, including the 2.8s for sharpness is what is out there. The price between high end Tamrons and some low end gems of Canon are at the same level (in this case Canon is cheaper!), without all the random AF issues of third party lenses which is another insanity to contend with. I think though that most Tamrons compete on price well but one has to look closely at horses for courses and it is increasingly not obvious at all. You are doing a great service by throwing so much light on to the photo community for us then to learn and make our own well informed choices according to our needs. Cheers and kudos as always for being such a great soul in this space!
@@DustinAbbottTWI By the way, with 40 and 60MP full frames out there and heading towards 100 presumably, there must be a reason for this push! Images are arguably better, not just for printing! This is a topic that we need more light on. With high MP bodies combined with the really good sharp lenses, I think it is going to be another level!

LOL. I have no idea what you are talking about, and I suspect neither do you.
I shoot live music and I’ve found in many situations the old g1 lens flares and ghosts bad . Also it’s af is slow for action and misses or can I say can’t keep up . And sometimes back focuses in low light high contrast situations. So I think this new lens would serve me better. Get out into the landscape world and I think the g1 is great. I do use the g1 a ton for video and love the vr. And that’s great they improved on the best out there . At least it’s better by a lot over my Nikon 70-200 e fl vr . I struggle heavily with that lens hand held on high mp bodies like the d810 and d850 in low light. With matching the shutter speed and vr on I’d think I’d be ok. This is not always the case. Especially shooting with the d850 not so much with the d810 . Thanks Dustin for your phenomenal work
It does sound like you are good candidate for the upgrade. Autofocus is definitely more confident now.
