It’s hard for me to get into performance clothing unless it’s majority cotton and maybe a bit of elastase or spandex. It has just been so hammered into my brain that you should choose natural fabrics over synthetic ones.
Theodore Skrodzki Same, here. I *do* have an inexpensive performance shirt I bought at Costco that miraculously fits me well and it’s my “go to” shirt if I don’t want to iron. I still wear an undershirt with it, however.
Another great video! I was just about to order from mizzen before I got the notification... Still waiting on that performance dress shoe roundup as the space has been expanding since your last related video.
I just purchased 2 Mizzen + Main shirts 👕 from JC Penny's at a 70% discount on a shopping whim that I happened to stumble upon. I am one happy customer!!
Nice! Pretty interested in that Manual shirt. I always have trouble picking up the items as a Canadian (these companies mostly stick to the US) but I’ve managed to grab a few of your recommendations so far and they’ve been great. I can 100% confirm the quality of his recommendations!
I like Twillory. I found a size option that works for me, and it's a good value. It's usually what I'll wear to gigs and I'll need to be somewhat active. I also like their performance pants.
Thank you. This is a thorough and helpful video. I'd love to see an updated video on performance chinos and button-up shirts for 2023/24. Many of the shirts and/or companies in this video are no longer available.
I know performance dress shirts are a different category, but I'm trying to decide whether I go in on a Hall Madden subscription or if I just buy performance dress shirts instead. I know you are a big fan of Hall Madden, so what do you think I should invest in? I wear button down dress shirts everyday for work, usually with a jacket and sometimes a tie.
Been seeing ads for Truewear or Truwear lately but haven't tried those. I've tried All Citizens and I can't say I am an fan. Those are made for skinny guys -the forearms are *tight*. I tried going up L Trim and L Athletic and it's tight in the forearms and in arm/across shoulder. XL was just too big and not a good fit. Also not a fan of the convertible sleeves that can be used with cuff links. Western Rise Limitless Merino are now my go-to casual/business casual shirt The fit is really nice, great fabric weight, stretch, and hand-feel. Their Techwool Flannel is also really nice; they are warm and have a flattering fit. No regrets picking these up.
Great video! I'm a fan of your content, but I have a body shape that would be best described as "athletic" (18.5" neck, 23" shoulders), and many of these products reviewed aren't available in my size. I just ordered from State & Liberty for this very reason. In future videos, could you mention in what sizes ranges each product is provided?
Hi Jon, all the info that you put in your videos is great. Which of these would you pick as the best for moisture-wicking / sweat management? As a sweaty guy, thank you!
Great video, thanks! I bought several Mizzen + Main shirts based on your last reviews and have never really been happy with them. While they are comfortable, they do indeed wrinkle when packed and they are difficult to iron because you need a cooler setting based on the fabric. They also have a slight smell which none of my other shirts have. On the other hand, I'm very happy with my Bonobos performance shirts and I agree with you that Bluffworks is the shirt to roll up and throw into a suitcase, and it always comes out wrinkle free. Thanks again.
Great video, as always, Jon...so appreciate your content. Ironically, mizzen and main just opened a store in my hometown (Austin). Fortunately, there’s a bonobos store here as well, so I’ll check them out soon. Keep up the awesome work!
Ministry of Supply has a good thickness as well as Manual. M+M & Stantt I found to be that thin. It's all about the fabric weight and usually relates to quality of the shirt & price. Depends on what you're willing to spend. A nice OCBD will usually be thick enough to not be see through
Love the content speaking of Dress shirts which few do you think are must haves for the wardrobe? Not sure if you've done a video on that already but I will check it out if you already did..I know I still need a white shirt and a light blue for sure! Had to donate my old ones since they were too big on me now.
I have couple Buttercloth dress shirts and they do feel amazing. The patterns on shirts are unique and stylish as well. However, I would have to say that the fit on these shirts are not as good as traditional dress shirts. I would wear these dress shirts for casual work days but never interviews, presentations, where you need to make a good first impression.
I agree!! I found Buttercloth after watching an episode on Shark Tank and found them to be the softest shirts I’ve ever felt. Just absolutely incredible and although I could wear them dressed up for sure, I could never wear them in a full blown suit either and would much rather wear an actual dress shirt like from the brand Eton for example
Do you actually own a Bonobos Swiss Performance dress shirt? You show a clip of you in the Jettsetter again, and mentioned in your previous video that you wanted to try the Swiss Performance dress shirt, so I'm curious if you ever did.
I'm conflicted because I love performance shirts, but the synthetic fibers that they use are extremely detrimental to the environment. Therefore, I try to stick to 100% cotton.
Yes that is the downside of these and possibly why they haven't completely taken off. I do love the 100% wool shirts I have though which gives a similar level of performance.
Solid info and great information. I plan on checking some of them out ASAP. Quick critic would only be is that I thought you were a bit fast in explaining thing. I think if you would spend about another minute or 2 for your review would be perfect. Just seemed a bit rushed of course I loved your information, just trying to assist your content anyway.
Where did you get the cream colored shirt you’re wearing in the video? Is that a performance shirt? I’m looking to buy a white, light blue and cream colored dress shirt for versatility.
Interesting there's no mention of cheaper options. I'm a working dad, I refuse to spend over a hundred dollars on a shirt when I could spend it on my kids. Amazon has tons of performance dress shirt options for less than 50 dollars, My favorite performance dress shirt I got from the thrift store for 3 dollars...
I'm definitely interested in more affordable options. Express had a 90% nylon / 10% spandex option that started at $70-80 (and was very comfortable, stretchy, thin) but would essentially become much cheaper with BOGO, coupons, etc. Most recently, it was available in only black and white but used to be in more colors. The URL I sent to a friend a couple weeks ago doesn't seem to work, so maybe it's discontinued. Have you had any luck with any brands on Amazon?
Another great video, Jon. In your experience, do these performance dress shirts with stretch reduce the muffin top issue? I feel like with my cotton dress shirts I always need to wear shirt stays to keep them tucked in, but I would think if they had a little stretch like most of my polo/golf shirts they wouldn't come untucked as quickly.
You'll have slightly less muffin top due to the stretch but I still find myself reaching for shirt stays just to make sure I have full tension and no billowing.
Thanks to your Mizzen and Main reviews about almost 2 years ago, I bought quite a few of their shirts (XXL Trim fit), which I still wear daily and are holding up very well. But wanted to ask your recommendations for the other brands that you had mentioned. I am 6'5" and not as lanky as you. Which of the other brands have longer lengths and are priced reasonably ?
I’d go to the MTM options like Woodies or Deo veritas at that point. You’ll never get a better fit and their performance options are very comparable to M+M!
I love most all of Bonobos' things, but their dress shirts, but unless I'm standing straight up, the space between the buttons always "pooches" out and exposes my skin. I don't know if the buttons are spaced out more than other shirts, or what it is, but that has me hesitant to buy more shirts from them.
Sounds like it's a cut problem (slimness) I have been finding many of my shirts doing this now that I've put on a few pounds vs how they used to fit my skinny frame. Make sure chest and body size are enough to drape well for you without being too tight
Can you review a performance dress shirt by a company called “All Citizens“, it's cheaper than these options, and I have read great reviews comparing them to the ones in your video.
I have one of their shirts but have had issues with the sleeve length so I did not give it enough time before this video. I do think the fabric is quite nice though
The Unity of Knowledge - I find that this is a common issue for me w/ OTR shirts. For the most part, I reserve these shirts for no- tie wear. If a shirt comes in S/M/L instead of numeric sizing, I'd argue that it is not a dress shirt and not intended to be worn fully buttoned. 1. Get all the info you can from the web site sizing guide & email customer service for any additional questions (be specific, info provided at the bottom of most sites). 2. Order 2 to nail the fit, the size that best matches your measurements and one size up or down depending w/ your experience with the brand ( if you're skinny size down. If you have some mass size up), send back what doesn't work. If the neck is perfect and w/ some tailoring the chest, waist, sleeves are good but the shoulders are just slightly too wide, keep this in mind that this may be the best fit from particular brands OTR. - If buttoned w/ jacket and tie no one will know. - If you take off the jacket and they see, only a select few will notice and absolutely no one but you will care. - If the select few happen to notice, take solace in that you've purposefully lulled them into a false sense of superiority ( let them underestimate you). - The shirt will be otherwise tailored and comfortable.
How can I start? I'm into classic men's wear and style. But I'm 22 and I'm in college. I think it's way over the top to walk into a lecture with a suit.. Even if it's a simple outfit. I wish I would already work in a consulting office where I could pull one of these beautiful outfits off.... Any advice?
Go cheap for now. Buy a white dress shirt and a grey trouser with side tabs (without belt loops). Watch some videos on RUclips on how it should fit and get it tailored. Just a trouser and a white shirt and a pair of simple penny loafer. Thats it. See how it feels and gradually evolve your wardrobe from there. Also get million dollar collar and magnetic collar stays. Affordable shirt dont have strong plackets. Have fun :)
Thats what i what wear every day to college. It has become a part of my personality. People love it :D. I don't own a suit yet. Will get one after graduating.
Asking because I've spent hours trying to find a comparable resource to your round-up guides that would work for us europeans, and sadly, failed miserably :(
I know, Wish there was an easier way for me to cover this stuff with shipping details for multiple countries. Canada gets left out in the cold quite a bit as well
Well, as someone who appreciates the channel, one note, for tailored athlete, most of their dress shirts don't have the 'TA'. The shirt you were wearing is one of their more casual button downs, meant to be worn untucked. Though as someone with a bit of a v-taper, I am glad you gave more of a shout out to athletic cut brands. Fyi, tailored athlete and state and liberty are cheaper as well, so in terms of the quality of the material you get what you pay for. I certainly prefer the feel of mizzen and main, but like all 'trim/tailored' dress shirts, they could be a bit more tapered.
Nice video. I am an analytical Excel person. What I would like to see is a comparison chart of attributes of these shirts. Specifically, I would like to compare materials as well as construction methods, treatments, and chemicals. For example, how does each shirt achieve their performance? I know Buttercloth achieves a 6-way stretch without any spandex--100% cotton. How is this achieved? Also wrinkle-free may be achieved by adding formaldehyde, and stain resistance may contain Teflon and other fluoride-containing chemicals. How do these chemicals affect sensitive skin and other health hazards? How do they compare in terms of temperature regulation and durability? How does spandex affect the ability to recycle the fabric? Basically, I want to identify how performance dress shirts achieve their performance.
I ordered a bunch of jeans based on your recommendations, time to look at Dress Shirts. Manual - too tight for me. I usually wear XL, but their XL shirt and Tee Shirts are too tight. The 2X in the teeshirts are my size, but they don't make it in the dress shirt.
Mizzen and Main collars are trash. They will last 2 months max and then they are also stain ridden and the material frays really badly. Stay away from them.
it would be instructive to offer more nuanced analyses of "performance" insofar as the brands accommodate different body types, not just as they pertain to the tactile properties of the fabric. you closed the video with a reference to that, and i welcome more. it is challenging to find shirts (or trousers, for that matter) that respond adequately to athletic, sprinter body frames. in my case, my arms and chest are significantly larger than my waist, and my glutes, thighs and calves fail to calibrate with the standard waist ratios. i've found that most of the brands you've scored well do a poor job of accommodating me. i especially find the bonobos and manual uncomfortable, with little "give" or just awkward sizing options. many active people go through "bulking" and "cutting" phases, and it becomes cost-prohibitive to size-up or size-down too frequently. mizzen + main - which didn't do well in your assessment - continues to be the most responsive during these cycles, particularly their spinnaker collection. with them, i can "bulk into" or "cut within" the same size (medium trim), as opposed to sizing up altogether (as i have had to with bonobos). overall, however, state and liberty seems to have nailed the "fit" component for me, though i prefer fabric from other brands. they optimize the visual impact of my physical exertions.
You need to use graphics.. was that white shirt M&M? You were dogging it at the same time? With all that talking.. you should label what you’re wearing …. Confusing
Sorry Jon. Your recs have been strong before but Manual Outfitters dress shirt is horrendous. Ordered it and it felt like paper machete. Stiff and just felt extremely cheap. Very disappointed in your rec and this shirt
Woodies 2.0 performance dress shirts? Their standard are not. And yes did not give MoS enough love on here but they make excellent clothing all around. I wear their tech chinos constantly.
@@The_Kavalier I watched your review about kickstarter launch of stainless performance shirt. Because of it, I bought it. And it is very very bad as performance shirt (maybe the size is ok and the length). As you don't include MoS and this past review of woodies, I can't trust your reviews anymore. Sorry
I have used Mizzen/Main and Bonobos. Both companies were easy to work with, good quality, and very easy to do no hassle returns.
You should do a chart comparing how all of these measure up with your criteria. Hard to keep track of which ones are good/bad in which categories.
your in-depth knowledge on the products you review is admirable. your videos are always informative and honest. great job!
@thekavalier manual outfitters is out entirely. Does Mizzen and Main still suck in 2023?
Thank you for this. I was going to go with Mizzen and Main based on your last roundup but now I have up to date information.
Man these shirts are so superior in comfort and practicality, why are more companies not switching to these more quickly? Perhaps they will over time
It’s changed a lot in the past few years! Many of the companies are dabbling in it
Can we get a short update? I know Bonobos no longer makes the Swiss tech.
It’s hard for me to get into performance clothing unless it’s majority cotton and maybe a bit of elastase or spandex. It has just been so hammered into my brain that you should choose natural fabrics over synthetic ones.

I was shocked at how bad the collar was on a buttercloth shirt for how expensive they are. Best dress shirts I’ve found so far are WRK and Eton’s

Do performance dress have any different effect on ring around the collar?
You lost me at $155
You need to use graphics.. was that white shirt M&M? You were dogging it at the same time? With all that talking.. you should label what you’re wearing …. Confusing
Manual outfitters is totally out of stock
They're closing down 😌
The Kavalier already got woodies which I love and some twillory on the way on the back of your recommendations. Thank you
this video is 2 years old and u changed the title to 2022...what a shame to deceive the masses..
if there were tangible updates I would have made a new video
Lol manual outfitters don't even make shirts anymore. I think thats pretty eventful.
Never liked a video faster
Sorry Jon. Your recs have been strong before but Manual Outfitters dress shirt is horrendous. Ordered it and it felt like paper machete. Stiff and just felt extremely cheap. Very disappointed in your rec and this shirt
I don’t know, a performance shirt just doesn’t seem right.
Not for everyone but always worth experimenting!
Woodies? They are not wrinkle free shirts. My worst purchase ever. The best one I have bought is Ministry of Supply.
Sorry
