    I've had a lot of Brooks Brothers and Charles Tyrwhitt shirts over the past 10 years, and I'd have to say that my experience would put Charles Tyrwhitt above Brooks Brothers based on durability and the appearance of the weave/patterns. I think they go above and beyond based on the price.

    I just recently switched my standard business casual shirt collection from Bugatchi to Eton - mainly because Eton is one of the very few affordable (though pricey) brands that are not Made in China. They're Made in Romania, so relatively affordable for European-made clothing. I admit - Bugatchi shirts have never failed me, and I love the selection and design, fit and feel. I just can't support companies that manufacture in China, if I have another option (I'm not getting rid of my iPhone).

      @@bradball the whole reason I LEFT Brooks Bros was they moved most of their focus to wrinkle-free. I like a traditional shirt. What am I missing?

    • @bradball
      @bradball  Год назад

      Most shirt makers across the spectrum (from Van Heusen on the low end, to Eton on the high-end) offer non-wrinkle. Some do a much better job than others. If you travel for business (particularly in places like Europe where there aren’t readily available irons in hotel rooms) having a non-wrinkle shirt is essential. A good non-wrinkle shirt… and especially a good performance shirt… offers a clean, crisp look… rarely (if ever) requires ironing… and is also very comfortable.
      I stand by my recommendations in the video. Get yourself a Truwear, Mizzen+Main, Buttercloth, Eton, or Twillory. In my opinion, any of them would be a step up from an old school Brooks Brothers shirt.

    Btw for all the issues people have with various things with Mens Wearhouse, the shirts Pronto Oumo and Joseph Aboud have been many of my best-the blends. They sometimes have different styles, they- and I have to admit suits-last longer than any shirt of any other kind. You can get the blends and you can get a sale three for 100 and a bit more if you’re a big guy.

    • @bradball
      @bradball  Год назад +1

      I’ve shopped at Men’s Wearhouse many times throughout the years. I’ve had better luck with their suits and sports jackets. It’s not that their shirts are bad quality… I think they are very comparable to Dillards Gold Label or Jos. A. Banks.
      Unfortunately, in that $30-$50 off-the-rack range that you find in the stores, you typically don’t get many performance features. I like a shirt with some good stretch, superb non-iron performance…. For just a little bit more money… you can get a better shirt that’s so much more comfortable and enjoyable to wear (such as Twillory, mizzen+main, or Truwear.

    I'm an Untuckit fan because they're perfect for my work attire (nice jeans and an untucked button down) and they double as a nicer going out shirt. I think some of their new shirts are much better than the older ones. I haven't had any of the issues you mentioned about the quality, but I'm also not paying attention to things like button quality as much. I've also never bought one for $99. I usually get them for around $60-80 which is pretty good for what they are I think. I have a few Charles Tyrwhitt and they wrinkle so badly and I'm not a huge fan of their fit, but other than that they feel pretty solid (not sure if they really should be dry cleaned instead). Thanks for the video!

    • @bradball
      @bradball  Год назад

      Thanks for your comment. We will probably have to agree to disagree with Untuckit. I"ve just found their quality underwhelming, particularly with so many good alternatives. Twillory, Truewear, Mizzen+Main, Woodies... all seem to be better constructed... and many now allow you to select if you want a shorter cut to accommodate the untucked look. A lot of better options in the same general price range as Untuckit.
      I agree with you with regards to Charles Tyrwhitt, their non-iron performance is poor. If I were to remake this video, I would be more harsh on them. They have a good name and decent quality... I think they're missing a big opportunity by not creating a better non-iron shirt with a little bit of performance stretch.

      Thanks for your comment... glad you liked the video. The video does include a review of a Woodies shirt - which definitely falls into the category of a semi-custom / online configurable shirt. With Woodies you select your style and features... and they also have a custom sizing algorithm which works pretty well. I personally think we'll see more of these shirt makers in the future.
      I will plan to do another shirt review... but it'll probably be in 2024 as this video is still very relevant. My plan is to include a few other manufacturers such as Bluffworks, Ledbury, etc.

    In ETON, you could have picked a smaller fit, as they have 4 different ones. Your shirt is a bit too big for you. Also: always make sure you don't have pleats in the fabric at the front above the belt: move excess fabric to the back - it looks better. Just an idea.

    Have you heard of Ledbury? I've heard they're pretty nice. They're in the $150 price range.

    • @bradball
      @bradball  11 месяцев назад +1

      I’ve kept my eye on Ledbury, they look quite nice, however they DO NOT make a performance dress shirt. I think $135 (the price I’ve seen for most Ledbury shirts) is too much for a 100% cotton shirt when (for the same price) I could get a Mizzen+Main, Truwear, or Buttercloth for the same price or less.
      Since publishing this video last year, I’ve switched almost entirely to performance dress shirts… the comfort and stretch is what I prefer.

    Excellent Review. I had a Abercrombie and Fitch Dress Shirt when I was in college. It was head and shoulders above anything else in my wardrobe. The quality of the fabric was excellent and buttons were amazing. Sadly I wore it out. Been looking for something like it ever since.

      I've found that Abercrombie uses high quality fabrics... I remember having a sweater from Abercrombie that lasted a very long time. Though I must admit, I haven't shopped there in many years and didn't even know they made dress shirts.
      I haven't purchased any Kirkland Signature shirts... I'll have to take a look. Based on my experience with the Kirkland brand, the quality is typically good for the price. I'm not sure about their selection... I would assume they have limited styles and colors. Next time I visit Costco, I'll be sure to take a look.

    I wish you had included in your review exact sleeve length. Too long a sleeve looks terrible. Buttoning the second button for the "shorter" length is too tight and bunches the sleeve looking bad.

    • @bradball
      @bradball  4 месяца назад

      I’m a 34/35. I’ve found sleeve lengths can vary drastically… most of the shirt makers are true to size… some miss badly. I always prefer a slightly longer shirt and I can get my tailor to adjust if necessary.

    • @bradball
      @bradball  4 месяца назад

      It’s a good shirt… probably not a great shirt IMHO. For a traditional shirt, Eton outclasses Brooks Brothers albeit for considerably more $$$.
      These days, I find that performance shirts are so much more comfortable and versatile than traditional shirts from legacy shirt makers such as Brooks Brothers. Although… my understanding is that Brooks Brothers now has a performance shirt… I may have to give it a try.

    What do you think about Tie Bar dress shirts?

    • @bradball
      @bradball  10 месяцев назад

      Haven't tried Tie Bar yet. Looking at their web site it appears they have some good designs and decent prices. However, it doesn't appear they have a true performance dress shirt. All of their shirts are 100% cotton - which means NO STRETCH. Since publishing this video (18 months ago) I really recommend performance dress shirts that have at least some stretch... it makes a world of difference in comfort.

  • @ivandegrisogono3334

    Eton is not a recommendation. Why? Buttons are thick, limited choice of collars, collars get distorted through washing and/or ironing, materials way too thick! Eton has only a limited choice in comfort fit as opposed to slim fit.

    • @bradball

    Hawes and Curtis… are they good?

    • @bradball
      @bradball  Год назад

      I have not owned a Hawes and Curtis shirt. It’s a brand that I need to try (I plan to do another shirt review video next year).
      My understanding is that they offer high quality shirts, perhaps similar (or slightly better) than Brooks Brothers or Paul Fredrick, but not quite as nice as Eton.
      I will say, I’m increasingly wearing performance dress shirts (about 80 % of the time). Mizzen + Main has become my go to brand since this video was published last year (I think they were my second highest rated dress shirt). The comfort level and breathability with a performance dress shirt really can’t matched. The appearance is almost indistinguishable from regular dress shirts.
      Brands like Charles Tyrwhitt, Paul Fredrick, Pink, Hawes and Curtis… they still don’t produce a performance dress shirt. Some brands like Brooks Brothers and Eton are starting to offer them. I personally think most would be happier with a performance shirt compared to a traditional dress shirt. If you haven’t yet… I’d recommend trying one.
