    It annoys me that your channel isn’t as big as the bigger names like TMF and AlphaM. Your content is soooo much more comprehensive and unique. I hope you continue to grow to their size.

      That's why he's not as big, they do much more general style tips. But, I do agree his content is much more comprehensive and I also hope he keeps growing.

      I’m happy being the artisanal denim shop vs their Old Navy mass market denim. A market for both but happy to be niche too 😁
      I really appreciate your support though!

      As a so-capped "creator" I can't imagine how TMF/Alpha M/RMRS can put out "style" videos like theirs every week. How many times can you tell guys not to wear a brown belt with black shoes or say that a bathing suit is a "must have item for summer!"
      I'd lose respect for myself if I did that every week for years. It's maddening.

      @@Ferfe84 I agree. After one day of sweating in it it starts to smell and feels a little clammy the next time I wear it. Does not happen with my merino wool shirt from wool and prince.

    Mizzen and Main is the absolute best ! I've tried the rest and these guys are unbeatable. Made in USA as well - also their magnetic collar stays are great

  • @cspdx11
    @cspdx11 5 лет назад +15

    Update - M&M is now making there clothing overseas. You can zero in on the label of their newer items and see made in Indonesia, etc I conversed with their information department and they acknowledged this transition to 3rd world outsourcing. So if you are buying for Made In USA think again now. Funny how their prices didn't even come down going to 3rd world labor.

  • @ahastar1141

    I think you really undersold the ministry of supply's fit. Their shirts are absolutely incredible and feel amazing. The fact that they designed their shirts around how a man body moves is incredible. I never knew how comfortable a dress shirt could be until I tried them. Also, if you don't love the fit, I believe Ministry will cover your tailoring costs as well. I love mizzen and main, but I almost feel naked at work wearing ministry of supply

    Great to finally see the performance round-up. State and Liberty haha, only been saying that for a couple years. I tried them awhile ago. I do agree not the same quality fabric as Mizzen and Main. But that collar is fantastic on it, the one thing they beat out Mizzen and Main on. The collar makes the State and Liberty shirt is still one of my favorites for wearing under a sweater or vest, since the collar stays nice and tucked. Also being hockey fan I love their marketing and branding. Still just have the one shirt, but it does make it into the rotation fairly often. If I was ever by a pop up store I wouldn't mind giving one of their coats a try, pretty steep price.

    Mizzen+Main Leeward and Blue Label lines are no longer Made in USA. They are now being made in Dominican Republic, despite the RUclips video advertising from M+M still saying they're Made in USA. The only shirt they have that is still Made in USA is their Spinnaker line.

    Great detailed video, Jon! Great options for men who are trying to shift into a more refined style. Too bad I am allergic to synthetic fabric, so I can only wear 100% cotton shirts, my fav tailor is from Rome but since it is very far from where I am based at, I have found ok sources to custom my shirts. Looking forward to seeing some skincare products on your channel! Congrats again on pursuing a non biased recommendation!

    Great roundup Jon. Love my Mizzen & Main shirts. I also love my Deo Veritas bamboo, Bonobos Performance (jetsetter too), and Twillory performance. I wanted to like State and Liberty but didn’t like the fit at all. Will need to try Woodies. I’ll pass on the others. I have a closet full of traditional dress shirts but always find myself wearing the performance shirts.

  • @wynkoop2000

    Awesome roundup! You should really check out the Nordstrom Tech-Smart shirts. I know you generally look at online brands, but Bonobos is in stores, so I'm thinking there is some wiggle room. I actually own Mizzen & Main, Twillory, and Nordstrom Tech Smart.
    Mizzen & Main is hands-down the best.
    Twillory is interesting because their fabric varies significantly from shirt to shirt. I have a white one that is amazing, but I have a pink one that is underwhelming.
    Nordstrom Smart-Tech is really quite exceptional. They're high quality, extremely comfortable, and have as many or more style options available than Mizzen & Main.

  • @PatrickHeymanZ
    @PatrickHeymanZ 5 лет назад

    I find Ministey of Supply to be inconsistent in their sizing. I have 3 Apollo 3 shirts in Medium Slim. Two fit like a glove, but the third is too tight in the chest. I have an aero medium in slim and regular. The regular fits well in the chest but looks dumpy at the waist, the the slim fits more like a small. I have a few Mizzen Main Leeward blue in Large trim. They fit the shoulders well but are not tapered enough at the waist. I live in S. Florida and usually wear them with an undershirt. Once I start to sweat, they feel weird and plasticky if I don't (MOS moreso than MM).

    Great roundup! This is definitely Mizzen's sweet spot. I love their stuff (in part due to your recs). Curious, are you working on a traditional shirt roundup, i.e. Eton, Proper Cloth, Deo Veritas? Also, you may have missed this but both Proper Cloth and Deo Veritas I believe now offer cotton / stretch fabrics also.

    I am very interested in european vendors, because I live in Spain and the shipping and Customs Costs (also exchange/return issues) are very high.
    Last but not least I would suggest a review of Suitsupply travel products (shirts and suits). It would be great.

    Ministry of Supply Apollo 3 vs Aero, which is cooler for tropical countries (30-38 C hot, humid climate)? Aero has some vents under the armpits and the whole marketing says it's cooler, Apollo 3 talks about temperature control which I think regulates body heat so more intended for temperate climates where evenings get chilly, but then you say the Apollo 3 is the coolest performance dress shirt. I need something that lets air trough so it cools and dries quickly, just by sitting wearing a cotton dress shirt without AC and it's soaked.

    I'm not sure if you have All Citizens on your radar, The selection is limited to 3 colors for the long and short sleeve button downs and unfortunately their largest size XL is too small for my body, but they are planning to expand their sizes and colors, and the pricing is comparable to Twillory, while being of higher quality in terms of material. Sadly the return process is slow and not simplified like some of the brands, but they seem to make up for it in quality and price, if you are lucky enough to fit in the range that they offer. Mizzen and Main is the best shirts I have in terms of quality and performance, but their higher price point prohibits me from getting my entire wardrobe from them. I do want to get my staple white dress shirt from them as it seems like a no brainer.

      I have a few Express 1MX shirts. I wouldn't call them "performance" in the same way since they're just a cotton-stretch fabric without any sort of hydrophobic or non-iron coating. Quality is typical mall-tier: nothing special or noteworthy, either way. What sinks them for me is how floppy and soggy the placket is. Without a tie the collar sags, droops, flops open and looks awful.

  • @HEAVYISPY
    @HEAVYISPY 6 лет назад

    I find performance dress shirts fix a non-issue. No shirt maker, at least any who have any slight idea of what they sell, recommend dry cleaning a shirt. Dry cleaning is harder on your shirt than machine washing unless you put your dress shirts on a heavy duty setting or something. I have shirts from JcPenney, all the way to turnbull and asser, I can and do machine wash ALL of them. None of them have faded, ripped, torn, or worn out.
    On the idea of moisture-wicking, POLYESTER DO NOT BREATH! Part of the reason you sweat is because you are wearing a polyester shirt, if you get a decent cotton dress shirt then this isn't an issue.

      D A I have several Twillory shirts. There is a very subtle "turn in" that I think won't bother most people. I imagine anyone on this channel tends to be more particular, though. Ironically, I use the Twillory collar stays for all of my shirts.

      Update... so I got the shirt, paid handsomely for it (~$150) but I think it’s worth it, I think. I’m a bit over 6 ft, 42” in the chest, size 16 collar and 34” sleeves and much to my surprise the medium Blue Label fits great. Interesting fabric, very stretchy, nothing like any shirt I have. Comfortable though. Sloppy stitching that frays after one wear, so have some trimming scissors handy. Oh, and amazingly enough the shirt didn’t wrinkle after a day in the office + a bike commute both ways

      Beat me to it. My other go-to is that bamboo shirt from deo veritas OR Mizzen Blue Label. Depending on budget I’d also consider Twillory regular sage cotton line

      Thanks! Have you had good experience with the wrinkle resistant from ledbury? I am looking for a shirt that I can put in a suitcase. So a wrinkle resistant or performance.

      You'll have to iron Ledbury, but they do hold up throughout the day without wrinkles. I have yet to find a shirt that truly never wrinkles... Mizzen & Main and Twillory are the closest I've seen and good enough for most situations.

      The Kavalier You sold me on Ledbury a long time ago and I've never regretted owning one.

    All of those shirts are way too expensive for what they look like... in EU there are so much more exciting brands.... check « Première Manche » !

    Just tried on Banana Republic's technical dress shirt and it was horrid. Thin [almost translucent in white], no stretch, and wretched lack of attention to details.

      Really? That’s disappointing. I love their technical chinos.

      Agreed, their traveler line is solid. Unfortunately the technical shirts they've been promoting aren't good. The ones I tried on had issues like uncut strings, bad/sloppy hemming. The Medium fit was poor, had no stretch, and the fabric quality was very poor. All an all a very poor showing for BR. If you end up checking them out, I'd be curious if you have the same experience.

    Stafford And Vanheusen Dress shirts

    • @wynkoop2000
      @wynkoop2000 6 лет назад

      JAMES I used to regularly purchase both those brands (until I found this channel). Van Heusen are hands down the lowest quality dress shirt I've ever owned (although, ironically, their trousers are alright). Stafford's Super Shirts are the only ones worth discussing. They are stain resistant and have a great slim fit, however, you can get much better shirts and greater variety for the price (unless you're raiding the $7 clearance section). I also dislike that they have non-removable collar stays. If you're on an ultra-tight budget, the Staffords are better than VH. If you're just cheep, then try Twillory, the Tie Bar, or even the Nordstrom brand (when on sale). All of these will last much longer, look better, and feel much better.

      JAMES Congrats in losing all that weight! That’s exactly what drove me to rebuild my wardrobe (although I only lost 50 lbs). By the way, I’m not the Kavalier, just an over-zealous guy who doesn’t know when to shut up!
