Here's the context you need for this song: Prior to, and at the time of this song's release, Em was involved in a lot of beef. He had the (at the time) co-owner of The Source magazine -- Benzino -- waging war against him because he had a problem with a white rapper being so successful, he had (as he said in the song) inherited 50 Cent's beef with Murder Inc/Ja Rule and was also going back and forth with them, and on top of that, this was the period in which Em's drug addiction was really in full swing. Also, Lex was right in that the name that was removed in one of the lines was Suge. This was in reference to (he talked about this in interviews later on) when Eminem signed with Dre, he wanted to jump in on the Suge beef on Dre's behalf, but Dre told him to just stay out of it and not get involved. And now onto the most chilling part -- in the video, you see Proof being depicted as being shot and killed. This was BEFORE Proof actually got shot and killed in real life a few years later. Eminem has spoken about how he feels like he almost tempted fate with this video and for a while, partly blamed himself for Proof's death in that regard. Also, in regards to the images shown at the end -- this was just like you guys said, paying homage to fallen rappers, as that's kinda the theme of the song. Bugz was an original member of D12 before Eminem joined the group, and was killed before the group became well known.
It's just sad how bugz isn't that well known in modern times. He was so talented as a rapper. Same goes for proof. He had a longer career in D12 but still doesn't get the recognition he deserves. His freestyles and verses were amazing.
@@dazzamcg2369 For sure! I'll always remember when I saw Eminem back in 2000 for a concert at the old Wembley Arena in London, Proof was in the DJ box before Em came out and he was just freestyling to beats for about 30 minutes. He was awesome.
The song is actually 2 years before Proof passed . It was dedicated to a former D12 member Bugz this song is a masterpiece and Em is such a visionary not just as a Hip Hop Artist but as a Music Artist Em The Goat Of Hip Hop Forever!🙇🏽♂️👊🏽🐐💫💯(And the foreshadowing of this video is crazy Proof laying in the hospital bed etc. I know this destroys Marshall till this day RIP Proof Marshall’s Best Friend Forever & God Bless Marshall he was a bigger man to dead his beefs before it went too far frfr)
That’s proof on the table, which is crazy considering the scene essentially came true with proof dying a couple years later. This song is essentially about rap beefs, macho egos and how it often turns deadly. He speaks specifically on his/50’s beef with JA and lex is right, the omitted lyric was “Suge”, he wanted to jump in but DRE told him to stay out of it
The "Someone Else" in that last artwork was Bugz... the former D12 member Proof is portraying in this clip. It was his murder that was the catalyst for Eminem to join D12 and fill his spot on tour.
Imagine letting, even ASKING Your best friend to pose in shooting scene in Your song, as Your another friend, who died by gun... and that best friend dying through being shot after...in a way HE HIMSELF predicted in another song (40 Oz) , that You ALSO took part in. 😱😕 RIP Proof.
That’s one of my favorite 80’s tunes too.., 80’s were full of great jams to sample, but it was just a fun wacky time for music period.. tons of one hit wonders, pop hits, glam rock, electronica starting out, Metal starting out, hip hop starting up.. it was a time I remember fondly, so much cool shit
The song originally was just paying homage to lost OGs and laying out a hypothetical scenario where one of Eminem’s crew (Proof in the video) was killed. The tragedy in it is that a few years later Proof would be murdered in an eerily similar scenario.
Ironically Proof is in the Music Video pretending to be as someone killed, it happens to be real some months later unfortunatelly. Portugal here for the Goat Eminem always since day one and forever. Thanks for reacting to this legendary masterpiece. Salutes and respect. This song is a masterpiece.
First verse He talkin bout Ja Rule. It’s crazy that proof died two years after this the exact way it did in the video 💔. And awww Suge wasn’t a rapper,Chile😂 He was beefing with dre and envious of his success after leaving death row but Nah. Suge was just realizing things wasnt 95,96 no more. And Lex was talking about how the singer for Iron Maiden Bruce Dickinson is so vocal well that's because he was an opera singer he can reach 8 octane levels in his voice just like the singer from Judas Priest Rob Halford
The sample Em uses here is from the song by the same title, Toy Soldiers by US artist Martika. It's well worth listening to. It's about drug addiction and the friend Martika lost through it. This version is cool too though, hits hard. 👍👏👏👏
U were right in the fact of eminem talking about suge knight and dre. Dre told him not to get involved and eminem has enough respect for dre to listen. The guy on the table represents proof.

This was before Proof died and it's a really spooky video to watch now. Considering Proof ended up being shot and killed. Continue resting in peace, Proof.
It’s about his rap beefs at the time, he’s taking about ja rule/benzino and all them and talking about how he’s tired of the beefing and he wants to step away from it before someone dies
The song was referencing his beef with Benzino and The Source Magazine that constantly used their magazines to diss Em and slight his affiliates and then he was talking about 50 cents street beef with Ja Rule and Murder Inc records and how he tried to prevent it to escalating further because it was street beef 1st between Ja and 50, 50 was stabbed at one point before the beef escalated what it did but then Ja disrespected Em’s daughter Hailey in a intro to a diss song and then it was no holds bars the 50 & G-Unit, Eminem D12 & Shady records got involved putting out mix tapes destroying Benzino and Ja Rule. This was just a song being a bigger person saying he’s sick of this beef shit because there was some violent stuff went down that went further then just diss songs so that’s why he said Ja mentioned haileys name so that’s personal bringing children in the mix so he says “ now this goes beyond so Jay-Z & Nas shit” which is the biggest highlighted beef on ‘wax’ aka record because they kept their beef with just track for track it never got violent and that beef is always referenced in peoples records because how revered Jay & Nas are in hip hop but proof is portraying original member BUGZ who was killed before Eminem success and before he came back and put D12 on and Swifty was put in D12 after BUGZ death. The timeline of these 2 beefs that ended up merging because of their affiliation with each other Em & 50 since 50 is Em’s protégé is a long one with a lot of classic diss songs that you would need to do your research and listen to fully grasp the depth of this song. And the end was just and homage to legends and his friend that died over Beef. Oh yeah Suge was not a rapper he was the co creator of Death Row records with Dre and then when Dre left Death Row they was not cool no more it all connects thru affiliation at the end of it and he’s just exhausted of the BS like he says even tho the Won the beefs and destroyed Benzino and Ja’s careers that he felt they lost because how much energy and shit was wasted for that BS. It’s a lot of history lol
The guy on the bottom right was a D12 member BUGZ who was killed like a few years before, the guy who was dying at the hospital is supposed to be him being played by proof which also died 2 years later , I think I hate this video more than eminem does, the fact that he predicted Proof's death is crazy man, btw i love your reactions guys keep it up
The guy playing the dying man was really shot and killed in real life after the video over a beef…his name is “PROOF”….wow! He got killed in a similar way as his acting in the video!
There is so much going on in this video i dont even know where to start... So the death Em is talking about and Proof is playing in the video is a man called bugz who was in D12 too. You can see his picture on the right (your left) next to 2pac on the mural at the end. The one you didn't know who was. Proof and Em grew up together and were best friends, basically brothers... The crazy thing is that proof died in a similar way about almost 2 years later. There is so much ya should have watched. He is talking about the beef he had with Ja rule and Benzino. And Em and Benzino is still kinda going at it. This beef been going on for a while.. And about him not mentioning Suge. Dr. Dre who signed eminem ws in death row records who was founded and owned by Suge. And there was alot going on there wich ended up with Dre leaving.. I feel like alot of the stuff went over your heads and thats why i said dont do it last time you wanted to cause there is so much history, beef and stuff you need to know to get what he is actually saying in this song. And when you do know what happend the song hits so much more and harder. I probably missed something here but there is just alot going on in this video.
Here’s a little context… Lex nailed it, he’s talking about suge bc in the late 90s after Dre left death row they were beefing heavy. Then he’s talking about his beef with Benzino (go listen to nail in the coffin) he murders him lyrically, then 50 was and still is beefing with Ja and murder inc which they both inherited the others beef. The whole video is about proof getting shot but as eerie as it is at the time he was still alive. It was just one of those rare instances where life imitates art and proof actually would get shot a few years later
Good pickup on the Suge thing actually, em had bloods pressing him, crips pressin him, all sorts around this time, bugz from D12 had just been shot and killed, and then suge is showing up to fifty cents video shoots and shit on top of all that, then people sit around and say hes a paper gangster and shit when hes literally just talking about the shit he was seeing in his day to day life
this song is about one of Em's best friends who was killed over some beef, cant remember his name though. Ironically, Proof is playing him in the video. Then a few months later, Proof is murdered in the same way
The spookiest thing is that Proof is the victim in the vid, and almost 2 years later he is shot and dies. I read somewhere that Em won't do the song anymore because of that
The beef they talk about that happened was between ja rule and 50 cent eminem stepped in to get it squashed ja said something about hailie. Eminem lost it and threw it in a diss and ended his career in hip hop industry. Ja rule was in murder ink and one of 50 cents friends also was in murder ink, it all started when 50 cent was hanging with his buddy from murder ink (not ja rule) and then ja rule saw it and thought he was talking shit so that’s why 50 got shot in his face 9 times. Eminem signed 50 cent. They been friends almost as long as Eminem has been a beyond famous singer.
This is about the Ja rule beef, when it was starting to get scary and one of ems guys got shot, proof is playing the one who got shot but he did get shot later and passed away. This was eminem essentially showing how he felt about the beef he was in with murder Inc
I'm very curious what they listen to in their day to day. It's just weird that so many songs that people know they have no clue about. But at least they get to listen to awesome songs with fresh ears.
Yes the blanked out name was Surge (Surge Knight). Surge also had a whole squad of dudes dressed in red basically storm one of the award shows Em and Dre were at too, I’m just going from memory but it was definitely along those lines. They also apparently tried to get them all in Hawaii or something too whilst they were in flight and once landed but again I’m going from memory and this is all ancient stuff so best to research it before taking my word for it ✌️
Yo, quick story...I was at a Ghostface Killah concert in Phoenix at a small club, I've mentioned I am THE Wu Tang Fanatic, Proof was in line for the bathroom behind me. The next night he was shot. Anyways, Mastodon and Wu Yang plz
This song is about all of the above that you listed lol its abiut past beefs thar got alot of big rappers killed. Its also about 50 cent beefing with ja rule and its about proof
Eminem, 50 Cent and Busta do a Song called Hail Mary 2003. Its a part of the Whole Beef they had with Ja Rule. Ja Rule disses Eminems daughter on the track "Loose Change"
Losing a bunch of top /PROOF/BUGZ,,, Sad in reality of what the focus was, I can remember as in that era once again, death, more death, Damn💔💔💔💔🙏🙏💔💔💔💔🙏🙏🙏🙏😭😭
the reason they labeled it "rival mc" is because right before Proof died him and eminem had a falling out. They were kinda beefing with each other and then he got shot.

Surge also had a whole squad of dudes dressed in red basically storm one of the award shows Em and Dre were at too, I’m just going from memory but it was definitely along those lines.
They also apparently tried to get them all in Hawaii or something too whilst they were in flight and once landed but again I’m going from memory and this is all ancient stuff so best to research it before taking my word for it ✌️
Suge. Not surge. 😂
@@MrJusthen soz must’ve had a brain “surge” of my own 😂😂
@@MrJusthen SURGE KNIGHT LMFAOO
This is my favorite Eminem song ❤
Big L died from street beef, trying to set someone up for his older brother Big Lee.
Bugz was a member of D12 before Eminem
Yo, quick story...I was at a Ghostface Killah concert in Phoenix at a small club, I've mentioned I am THE Wu Tang Fanatic, Proof was in line for the bathroom behind me. The next night he was shot.
Anyways, Mastodon and Wu Yang plz
Not A big rap fan, I'm a metal head. But love Em
1:14 Benzino, was the beef.
Hi my name is Yoni whenever you have a time I’d love to educate. In all of the Eminem stuff that a lot don’t know.
This song is about all of the above that you listed lol its abiut past beefs thar got alot of big rappers killed. Its also about 50 cent beefing with ja rule and its about proof
He says who is talking about several times. Ja. ja rule
Eminem, 50 Cent and Busta do a Song called Hail Mary 2003. Its a part of the Whole Beef they had with Ja Rule.
Ja Rule disses Eminems daughter on the track "Loose Change"
The song is about the true sixth member of D12 Bugz he’s was murdered by another Detroit artist in front of D12.
I think you guys would like to watch the 8 Mile Battles. You'll enjoy it.
The whole movie on that note.
Well, you’re right it is Proof on the table. 😔 it ended up being just like how he died.
This is a really good song
Big Proof & Bugz RIP
Losing a bunch of top /PROOF/BUGZ,,, Sad in reality of what the focus was, I can remember as in that era once again, death, more death, Damn💔💔💔💔🙏🙏💔💔💔💔🙏🙏🙏🙏😭😭
Benzeno was the one who shot at the group and 50 was alone when he got shot 9 times in the face
the reason they labeled it "rival mc" is because right before Proof died him and eminem had a falling out. They were kinda beefing with each other and then he got shot.
Have an awesome banger for y'all, Leo Moracchioli`s cover of Adeles Hello! One of the best covers of all time! Heavy! 🤘
I believe *Proof* is reenacting their former *D12* band mate *Bugz* getting killed in a drivr-by & then worked on in the hospital but ended up dying
