I saw Kansas in Topeka this October. Kerry Livgren showed up to play dust in the wind. It gave me chills for sure to see him back.

Have seen Kansas more than 20 times, wish they'd have played this show in their hometown and mine, Atlanta.
Have seen all the incarnations of the band and have never been disappointed and believe they're the most underrated band ever...proof, no R and R hall of fame for them!
    Great review, Thanks!

I was there but didn’t see you in the lobby. My first time seeing Kansas so I had no expectations. Loved the show and as an added bonus I scored tickets for Styx while I was there. Perfect night.

So great to hear this from you guys. Been a huge fan since second album and have felt and said so many of the things you guys are saying about how good they are live and how many amazing deep cuts they have. Saw first time in 1976 and many, many more times, trying to convince friends, co-workers and anyone else who would listen...it feels that finally people are seeing the genius and Kansas is getting the respect they have deserved for so long. I wanted to be there SOOO bad last night. Saw them about two months ago playing POKR live in Tulsa in a smaller version of Beacon Theater, the Brady Theater. Agreed with everything you said re: sound, stage, acoustic set and Tom Brislin!! Oh and Phil's Aqua Blue set was the coolest kit I have ever seen him play. Got lots of close up pics of it. Sorry this is so long, but its fun hearing this from guys whose opinion I respect!

Great review from a long time KANSAS fan! They are fantastic and getting better every concert! Never a dull moment and a new album coming soon!! Been listening since the White Clover days, so I've seen and heard them many times since the early '70's! Carry On!

My first real rock concert was Kansas in San Benito Texas 1991 or so. I was the only person in the audience who knew every son. Play the Game Tonight was the only song on setlist released after 1980. I screamed to strangers next to me "this is people of the south wind!" Or "this is the Wall!" Etc. Etc. Great review. Nothing beats being there!

I've noticed the same thing at Kansas concerts (and that the drums are almost always way too prominent in the mix). My understanding from talking with some of their crew back in the early 2000s was that they mix their sound for outdoor amphitheatre-type shows and when that carries over inside to small or medium theaters......yeah, way too loud.

    • @paulnordstrom3010
      @paulnordstrom3010 3 года назад

It's a mystery to me why this has not been addressed more by us aging concert-goers. The mixes are often very bad at concerts, and the sound is just way too loud for us baby boomers.

Last time I saw them was in the Wiltern theater in Los Angeles, they were loud, very very loud. My ear (I have one) was ringing for days. But fantastic show, even had someone dancing to Magnum Opus! lol Hope to see them next year. Tom Brislin is great, his own music, fantastic, my fav song "Hurry up and smell the roses" would love to see him perform that song w Kansas.

Love the comment by Jeff about how perfect the sound was. Regrettably the last time I saw Kansas was in 77, but they were as tight and on point as any band I've ever heard. And the sound that night was just like you describe it. And this was in a college fieldhouse. So glad you guys got to enjoy them!

Tom Brislin was an MVP last night. He is a perfect fit. He has an attention to details in both learning the parts and nailing the sounds.

Leftoverture was originally the title of the song Magnum Opus, which was a pastiche of song fragments that Kerry and Steve had that they put together to make an epic, multi-part suite. The ridiculous subtitles were obviously tongue-in-cheek and still amuse me to this day. Father Padilla Meets the Perfect Gnat? Comedy genius! The guys in Kansas were and are serious musicians, but they all have a great sense of humor that flies under the radar. Magnum Opus was supposed to be the title of the album, but the record company loved the name Leftoverture so much, they insisted on using it for the album title.

14:16 They used to play the Spider in the late 70's when the album came out, then Steve brought it back in the early 90's as a keyboard solo. Last I knew of they played it was during the late 90's and didn't bring it back until now

Amazing show. As great as the Leftoverature songs were, the band really kicked the hard rockers on point, songs like Portrait He Knew and Sparks of the Tempest, taken to another level. Icarus was the perfect closer, so loud and aggresive. God damn I love Kansas

With respect to the Classic Album Wars my pick to win the tournament was always Kansas, Two for the Show. There are a lot of great bands remaining, but for my money I thought Kansas was, and still is, one of the best bands ever. This music was the melding of symphonic sensibilities of bands like Yes and Renaissance with the drive and intensity of bands like Uriah Heep, Deep Purple and Thin Lizzy. Brian May always had a huge respect for their music live (See "Miracles Out of Know Where" documentary for the skinny there) and Garth Brooks remembers attending a concert to discover Phil Ehart was the drummer he first heard who played notes. Though they are no longer in the tournament, dislodged by a truly worthy opponent, no one in the remaining list can touch this band live. I will admit I am biased--as we all are to some degree--but I cannot help it in this case. And if they were this good live today, it would be criminal not to have recorded a DVD for the performance. When they are gone, they will be sorely missed in our home. Merry Christmas to all of you, to Jeff, to Pete and to all the members of Kansas--former and present--for a legacy of music unsurpassed in 20th century music.

I was sad to see Two for the Show eliminated from the Live Album battles. But at least it lost to Strangers in the Night (one of the favorites to win the war). Was listening to the expanded version this afternoon. Child of Innocence and Hopelessly Human (with the Incomudro intro) are alone worth the price of admission!!!!🥁

little known fact about the naming of the "leftoverture" album title.......originally the song "magnum opus" was called leftoverture because the song was made up of leftover bits of songs that had not been used.......somebody in management or the record company heard the title and said nope that is the best album name ever, so the album was changed to Leftoverture and the band renamed the song to Magnum Opus. very cool indeed!

yeah three or four thousand is really good to pack in for Kansas nowadays....they think about it so many around the casino circuit now it seems everywhere you go if you want to see one of your favorite bands from back in the day see what casino they're playing at I mean you have to admit reality..Unless just one of the classic powerhouse money makers what the crazy Live Nation or whoever their tour is.. that you can always rely on to put on a show with unbelievable backing and production.. if that makes any sense
I agree with Jeff about losing touch a little bit..I was heavy in the Steve Miller Band till about wide river and buy about the mid-90s you know if he came around to like you know a small venue I did see him once in the early 2000s..

Kansas has always sounded superb live... perhaps the most consistently best sounding live band ever, even better than technically superior bands.
Secondly, of course they’ve played Spider live - the 2 CD reissue of Two for the Show features a blistering rendition of this tune immediately after the drum solo.
And yes, I appreciate Kansas more than ever.... amazing amazing band.
