- Join host Pete Pardo for a discussion of some of the hard rock/metal/prog vocalists who have worked with a wide number of exceptional guitar players.
I so miss John Wetton. His velvet voice was just sublime.
You can say that again! John's voice is the sound of every vacation I've ever taken. House rules; we listen to Asia and Icon in route during our vacations.
Although John wasn’t the guitarist in Family, he was the perfect vocal pairing with lead singer extraordinaire, Roger Chapman, one of the greatest rock frontmen ever.
Ian Gillan also played with Tony Iommi when he was in Sabbath and on their project band Who Cares along with Jon Lord.
He was on my list...somehow I forgot to mention Iommi.
David Bowie has worked with some great guitarists. Mick Ronson, Carlos Alomar, Brian May, Pete Townshend, Robert Fripp, Adrian Belew, Reeves Gabrels, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Pete Frampton,
Yeah, Bowie worked with a pretty eclectic group of great players, you can add Earl Slick to that list as well.
Does a guest appearance in London on the Spiders from Mars tour by Jeff Beck count?
Joe Lynn Turner also comes to mind. He’s worked with Ritchie Blackmore, Yngwie Malmsteen, Jeff Watson, Carlos Cavazo just to name a few.-Chris🎧
JLT has had a great career without ever quite getting to be the star he maybe could have been.
@@kevinjohnbetts He's a star in his own mind and always has been.
@@CB-xr1eg 😂😂😂
Kevin Betts Nailed it!🎙
Clive Bindley Totally agree!🎙
Glenn Hughes has worked with a menu of the greats: Blackmore, Bolin, Moore, Thrall, Iommi, Bonamassa, JJ Marsh, John Norum, and probably 5 others I’m neglecting.
lucifer lavey Mark Bonillia as well
Jeff Kollman and Doug Aldrich!
First guy i thought of when i saw the title was Coverdale
Saw Ozzy on the Bark at the Moon tour. Jake E Lee was awesome!
@Scarecrow music5 same tour!
Hey Pete, Great deep dive into some of the greats! I was trying to name them as you mentioned the singer. I got quite a few but it was fun being reminded or schooled on some others. THANKS!!!!!
Graham Bonnet: Blackmore, Schenker, Malmsteen, Vai, Impelliteri...
Glenn Hughes has only gotten better with age. He is absolutely FANTASMIC!!! Great show, Pete!
Earl Slick is a badass... one of my favorite albums is his "Live '76" and extremely underrated album.
Graham Bonnett had Blackmore Malmsteen and Vai that right there is INSANE.
And Jan Akkerman
Plus Michael Schenker and Chris Impellitteri
Coverdale's list is IMPRESSIVE! Paul Rodgers' is also very impressive. Glenn Hughes was my pick when I saw the title of this video though. Gotta love Glenn's list ;-)
Ian Gillian with Tony Iommi
Exit Stage Left's showing is not a shock at all. I'm 53 and been listening to it religiously since it came out in 1981.
Hey Pete! Great way that you linked all of these awesome guitarists together! Interesting in that this could be put into a flow chart! 😀 When you got to David Bowie I was hoping that you would mention Carlos Alamar.. And you did! 👍 I know I mentioned on one of your past videos that he teaches music and guitar at the college that I work at currently.. 😀 If you don't mind I'll show him this video.. 😀 I'm sure he'll enjoy this! 👍 hApPy holidays! ⛄🌲
Goran Edman has worked with some great guitarists. Malmsteen, Norum, Kotzev to mention three.
Doogie White; played with Blackmore, Malmsteen and presently Schenker
Dio also collaborated with Kerry Livgren from the band Kansas. The song "Mask of the great deceiver" is great.
Coverdale Page? An almost goes without saying oversight!
BoyzonFilm I was waiting for that mention.
Rod Stewart with Jeff Beck and Ronnie Wood, amazing! You get rid of Stewart's schmaltz, awesome frontman.
John Wetton . . . Worked with a ton of Great Guitar players Glad You mentioned his efforts.
Saw The Whitesnake tour with Steve Vai. INCREDIBLE!
Hi Pete. Also with Phil Lynott, I believe Mark Knopfler played on his 'Solo in Soho' album. Check out the single 'King's Call' (Elvis tribute).
Flipping your concept, and from a Canadian standpoint, Domenic Troiano had been part of (or collaborated with) several huge bands. A few times was with singer Roy Kenner, because I count their Canadian bands Mandala and Bush. They were both in James Gang after Joe Walsh went solo.
Phil Lynott has worked with Gary Moore, Rory Gallagher and Mark Knopfler.
Glad you mentioned Phil Lynott. Mark Knopfler's another name to add to his list. Played on Phil's second solo album from 82. Granted it was one track but still.
Yes Face the Truth is sooooo gooood. Love Glenn and John. And to here We will be strong with Joy in 1992 did bring a tear to my eye
The band Patto featured, lead vocalist, Mike Patto with the great guitar virtuoso, Ollie Halsall... The unique dual lead Spooky Tooth vocalists/keyboardists Mike Harrison and Gary Wright with guitar ace, Luther Grosvenor.
A couple of names that could be added as honorable mentions are: Bjorn Lande (who is probably very well known) and D.C. Cooper (probably not as well known.) Both have bright and powerful voices. Both have plenty of range. Both sing with incredible control and expressiveness. And both have performed and worked with an amazing host of shredders and players over the past 15 to 20 years. These are the first two voices that came to mind. In D.C.'s case he now fronts Royal Hunt--another gem of a band that is hardly known here in the US.
Jack Bruce, Clapton, Leslie West and I'm sure a few more I don't know. I always loved Leslies playing and singing alone. " Blood of the Sun" being one of my favorites.
Davey Pattison- with Michael Schenker, Ronnie Montrose, and Robin Trower.
Yes!
Great show!
Hope you will find the time to do the jazz show with mike antonelli!
Lemmy Kilmister:
Fast Eddie Clarke ~ Phil Campbell ~ Wurzel ~ Brian Robertson ~ Larry Wallis ~ Kelly Johnson ~ Raymond Ian Burns ~ Huw Lloyd-Langton and it doesn't end there!
Warren DeMartini of Ratt fame, was also in Whitesnake (93-94)
Great video/list! I'm thinking Russel Allen (Symphony X, Adrenaline Mob, Ayreon, Avantasia, Trans Siberian Orchestra, Allen/Lande, Joel Hoekstra's 13, ... Loads!).
- Paul Stanley (all the guitarists in Kiss, he's played with Slash, Bob Kulick, ...)
- Maynard James Keenan (loads besides Adam from Tool and Billy from APC).
- Corey Taylor (the guys from Slipknot, Stone Sour, Rick Nielsen, ...)
Great list & kind of a no-brainer too 🤣🤘
A great list, Pete! I was about to suggest Gregg Allman, but you got to him at the end. No reason to go outside of the ABB, which included him playing with brother Duane, Dickey Betts, Dan Toler, Warren Haynes, Derek Trucks, Jimmy Herring, and Jack Pierson. Rush beating 'Fillmore East' is absurd however, but then, we lost 'Get Yer Ya Yas Out' in the first round, so it's not an exact science by any means. Your personal knowledge of all of this great music is seriously impressive. I've never even heard of a single radio personality, or another person in my own world who comes in close to you in that regard.
Mr. Soto also recorded with Japanese guitarist Kuni. Album 'Masque' 👍
Pete, how about drummers who have played with some mega greats. Cozy Powell, Carmine Appice alone have a who's who of greats. Just out of curiosity, when will the jazz show be coming???
Oops!!! I forgot about Mike Portnoy. I would say he that he has played with a few great guitar players.
Sammy Hagar with Eddie Van Halen, Neal Schon, and Joe Satriani, Ronnie, Vic. Yes glad that you included Sammy in this bunch. There's a lot of others that he's jammed with over the years but that would be just one-offs. Yeah he's had a really incredible career just stellar with great musicians
Coverdale played with page too Remember? Coverdale page 1993 and I met Glenn two weeks ago he signed my deep purple vinyl after his gig lovely guy
I know that this might be off topic, but I would love to see you do a Yngwie Malmsteen retrospective episode with Jeff Young. I really enjoyed the top ten favorite Yngwie Malmsteen episode that you did with Jeff Young. It could be a long one like the Black Sabbath and Judas Priest episodes since Yngwie has done so many solo albums , and did one album with Steeler and one studio album with Alcatrazz and one live album. Hopefully one day you will do this retrospective with Jeff Young since he is a huge fan of Yngwie Malmsteen.
I want to add one to John Wetton's list that I feel should be mentioned. Dave Kilminster played in Icon with John and Geoff. He's a killer player!
Peter Gabriel
with Steve Hackett and Anthony Phillips in the Genesis years
with Steve Hunter, Robert Fripp, David Rhodes, Vernon Reid, Leo Nocentelli and others on his solo albums
Just like Donald Fagen/Steely Dan he brought out some of the best in the guys he worked with - PS, I am happy you had David Bowie in your video since he had that same impact on the musicians he worked with.
Jake E Lee also was in Dio for a short time, pre Viv, and Coverdale and Page was a amazing combo.
Before you started the list I was thinking David Coverdale then you said his name and it gave me a shock it’s as if you can read my mind lol
Today is Paul Rodgers birthday the 17 he's 70 Pete , do you believe it ? Man time flies !
Saw Dio on the Last in Line tour!
Wow that is cool. I caught Dio with Motorhead in 03 and with HEAVEN & HELL in 08ish
Jack Bruce
- bassist but also great singer in all his bands and solo
with Eric Clapton in Cream - Leslie West in West; Bruce & Laing - Robin Trower in BLT - Gary Moore in BBM
- many times with John McLauglin on solo albums + collaborations (since their early days with Graham Bond in 1963!) -
In his solo album bands he had Chris Spedding, Steve Hunter, Mick Taylor, Clem Clemson, Gary Moore, Vernon Reid, Phil Manzanera, Bernie Marsden etc
And if you look at all the drummers he worked with it is just as impressive a list.
Good call. Was thinking of him after I taped the episode.
John Mayall has had the pleasure of playing with Eric Clapton, Peter Green and Mick Taylor. Muddy Waters has played with a few guitarists but I remember he did some stuff with Johnny Winter. Rod Stewart has played with Jeff Beck, Ronnie Wood, and a few others. Mick Jagger has had 3 (not counting Keith) stellar guitarists in Brian Jones, Mick Taylor and Ronnie Wood. Steve Mariott played with Peter Frampton as well as Ronnie Lane and Ian McLagan from Small Faces. Jack Bruce has played with Clapton, Buddy Guy, and quite a few others. Dave Mustaine (who himself is a great player) has played with Chris Poland, your buddy Jeff Young, and Marty Friedman!
Venturing into punk stuff, Iggy Pop has played with some truly powerful guitarists (although not usually technically proficient). Ron Asheton, James Williamson (one of my all time favourites) and Carlos Alomar due to his connection with Bowie.
Have you ever done, or thought of doing a top (10-20?) list of off shoot bands or songs, from the Deep Purple/Black Sabbath Family? So many great ones from Badlands, to Rainbow, to Black Label Society to Whitesnake and many, many more. On a side note, in regards to that family tree, one can do a six degrees of seperation with either group and connect some of the oddest artist, say Olivia Newton John and Sabbath (Eric Singer played with both) and you can connect them to so many more, say, Roy Orbison, he has a Sabbath connection, along with all of his Wilbury pals, via ELO's drummer Bev Bevan who played also in Sabbath.
To add more players to the Dio connection you could have added in the Hear'N'Aid project. 'Working with' is tenuous, but with it included Dio would win the Guitarist Bingo hands down.
Couple other Topics of discussion could be: Guitarists who would have been bigger with a better singer?, Singers who were or thought they were over-shadowed by their guitarist?
Jeff Lynne hasn't played with a lot but I'd say the guys in Traveling Wilburys. What about John Waite when he was in Bad English and his own band. The other one that comes to mind is Damn Yankees Tommy Shaw since he's a singer and he played with Ted Nugent and course in Styx. I think you covered them all pretty much because I can't think of others.
Paul Rodgers has stated in interviews that Paul Kossoff was the most talented guitarist he'd ever worked with. That discounts Jimmy Page & Mick Ralphs right off the bat....
And Jimmy Page stated that Jeff Buckley was the best vocalist in a live situation who he had ever worked with so that discounts Plant, Rodgers and Coverdale in Page's opinion.
I would add 1) Don Henley (all the Eagles guitarists plus Danny Kortchmar and Mike Campbell), 2) Rod Stewart (Jeff Beck, Ron Wood, Steve Cropper, Joe Walsh, Mark Knopfler, Michael Landau)
Warren Demartini has played for Dokken (When Lynch auditioned for Ozzy) and Whitesnake ruclips.net/video/htlfrVzOzVc/видео.html
Mitch Perry (Talis, MSG) with Cher: ruclips.net/video/02ZACf2w0vw/видео.html
Andy Timmons (Danger Danger) with Olivia Newton John : ruclips.net/video/LjrZsKHUCU4/видео.html
JLT, Göran Edman, Fergie Fredriksen, Lou Gramm, Jorn Lande, Jimi Jamison.
DuG Pinnick! - Aside from King's X he's recorded full albums with George Lynch (KXM), Eric Gales (PGP) and Reb Beach (The Mob). Plus there are the numerous guest appearances and albums I've probably forgotten about.
Brandon Flowers and Dave Keuning. Underrated guitarist.
I would add James Dean Bradfield but he is his own guitar player.
Episode suggestion:
Singer/muscian with 3 or more good bands.
My three favorites are Dio, Anselmo, Cornell.
Ozzy and Dio come to mind.
Don't forget Coverdale played with Jimmy Page also
Yep, as I've mentioned to a few people, just slipped my mind for some reason.
Kevin Ayers had Steve Hillage, Mike Oldfield, Andy Summers, Ollie Halsall play on his recordings.
I haven’t even started watching the video at this point, to which I will just name some of my own in this category:
Keith Relf
David Lee Roth
Jon Anderson
Ian Gillian
David Coverdale
Graham Bonnet
Sammy Hagar
Mick Jagger
Those are the first names that come to mind. Did I miss some obvious ones?
Great choice, reminds me that I left out Davey Pattison who worked with Robin Trower AND Ronnie Montrose. If we’re talking singer/bass players, the list is ENDLESS for Jack Bruce
A) Robert Plant / Jimmy Page
B) Ian Gillian / Ritchie Blackmore
C) Roger Waters / David Gilmour
D) Geddy Lee / Alex Lifeson
E) Barry Hay / George Kooysman (Golden Earring)
Teddy, hahhahahahah....
@@ovelillas - On album. He's good. Live. That's another story.
@@kevinthetruckdriver353 Do you mean Teddy or Göran? Lee does a fine job live. Haven't heard Edman live. Maybe a good thing... ?
@@ovelillas - my bad. It's Geddy. Not Teddy. From Rush.
Bowie with Mick Ronson worth mentioning. Guys from Def Leppard worked with him, too.
Which I did.
Hello Pete
I would suggest Gino Vannelli and Donald Fagen who had some fantastic guitar players
Mark Knopler played with Phil Lynnott
The great Phil Moog comes to mind
Pete, knowing your appreciation for a twin guitar attack may I suggest you check out an album entitled Revival by Winterhawk. If you are not already familiar with it, think you will dig it.
Yep, have it, and talked about it on the show a while back.
Interesting list... Warren DiMartini also played with David Coverdale on a tour in the 90s.
Here’s more:
Jim “Dandy” Mangrum
One front man singer who was such an amazing influence on ALL big personality front men, but sadly has been forgotten (and he’s still alive playing in small clubs): Jim “Dandy” Mangrum of Black Oak fame. Mangrum played with a variety of really good players (at least every bit as good as those from Alice Cooper’s band as well as some of the more famous legacy players you mentioned), including Jim Henderson, several decent session players, and the late great Shawn Lane! Mangrum was an inspiration to soooo many bands, American and British.
David Lee Roth (a Jim Dandy Mangrum protege)
Let’s see... EVH, John 5, Vai....
Gino Vannelli
Crap music that never required the amazing players he had, a hairy chested sex symbol type of guy... but what amazing bands he had backing him up, and a few excellent guitar players as well.
Axel Rose
Another sort of Mangrum protoge, but he’s played alongside Slash, Angus Young, Buckethead, and his stable of GnR players as well.
Peter Gabriel
He’s played with quite a few guitarists of note...
I’ll add more as I think of them😉
1. Freddie Mercury + Brian May
2. Ronnie James Dio + Ritchie Blackmore/ Tony Iommi
3. Jon Anderson + Steve Howe
4. Ozzy Osbourne + Randy Rhoades
5. Ian Gillan+ Ritchie Blackmore/ Steve Morse
6. Greg Lake + Robert Fripp
7. Peter Gabriel + Steve Hackett
8. James Labrie + John Petrucci
9. Ian Anderson + Martin Barre
10. Geddy Lee + Alex Lifeson
That's at least a couple times Pete has mentioned John Sykes's lack of production recently. Rumor is he has a studio release for sometime in 2020.
Was supposed to come out in early/mid 2019, and that has come and gone. Word is he's had most of this material completely since 2018. Keep waiting...
Pete check out the career of Swedish singer Goran Edman. He's sung with loads of bands. I first heard him with Malmsteen
Yep, he's great!
Great show, but you forgot Coverdale played and recorded with Jimmy Page.
Damn, yes, I did forget to mention that!
If the subject of the video had been about drummers who had played with numerous great vocalists and the cream of guitarists then the late, great, legendary Cozy Powell must surely top that particular list !
Yeah, that was a pretty good album, Shake My Tree and Don't Leave Me This Way were great songs.
Coverdale with Blackmore and Page and of course Tommy Bolin
@ MLG and so many additional guitarists who played in Whitesnake throughout their career.
Graham Bonnet👍
Tom Jones had Big Jim Sullivan as his guitarist. He gave guitar lessons to Ritchie Blackmore.
Alice Cooper with Davey Johnstone (now with Elton John). Steve Walsh with Steve Morse, Steve Hackett, Mike Slamer and Tommy Denander not to forget Kerry Livgren and Rich Williams.
Glenn Hughes! YES!!!
How about Donald Fagen of Steely Dan? Elliott Randall, Jeff "Skunk" Baxter, Larry Carlton, Denny Dias, Rick Derringer, Mark Knopfler and of course the much missed, Walter Becker. Many more I'm sure because they always employed the best.
Steve Lukather and Slash for Alice Cooper.
An artist not exaclty a well known singer, but who worked with a ton of people is Arjen Lucassen in his Ayreon project. Let's give him at least an honourable mention.
Well, I wouldn't actually call him a singer, but yeah he's worked with a TON of great guitarists & singers in his various projects.
I am little surprised Chris Cornell did not make this list - Kim Thayil, Tom Morello, Stone Gossard, and Mike McCready
Rod Stewart has Jammed with Jeff Beck, Ron Wood, Steve Cropper,Joe Walsh,David Lindley, Jeff Baxter, Wally Stocker, Kane Roberts and Mark Knopfler .
I may have missed it.... Steve Lukather, I think played with Alice Cooper.
Maybe not considerd hard rock, but how about Keith Relf of The Yardbirds? Eric Clapton/Jimmy Page/Jeff Beck
Gillan & Dio both with Blackmore and Iommi
Jack Blades
Jack Bruce is one with Eric Clapton and Gary Moore alone.
This is a little out in left field, but ... Donald Fagen?
Good call!
He came to my mind as well, a very unique singer. Steely Dan hired an army of guitar wizards and pushed them to do ground breaking solos.
The main difference here is that only some few of them were band members. More often they were just used for a single song. But many notable guitarists did there best job on a Steely Dan song.
Ozzy always surrounded himself With great Guitarist.
Ronnie J. Dio: Blackmore, Iommi, Campbell and others. Within the top 5 singers of all time
David Coverdale + Jimmy Page. Ozzy Osbourne + Slash :)
Unless I missed it you didn't mention Keith Relf of The Yardbirds. Beck, Page, and Clapton make a pretty good resume.
Dont forget Ozzy and Gary Moore doing led clones
How can you don’t mention Joe Lynn Turner when you talk about the Blackmore connection? 😉
David lee Roth has jammed with some greats: Vai and Van Halen
I think he's talking about singers.
@@RushfanUK awe man, doggin on my boy Dave
@@youtoo2233 and Jason Becker
I don't recall you mentioning David Coverdale also working with Jimmy Page.
I'd like to add a 90's vocalist as well: Chris Cornell worked with Kim Thayil, Mike McCready, Tom Morello, Gary Lucas and Alain Johannes.
And Axl Rose played with Slash...and then played with Buckethead, Bumblefoot, and Robin Finck (all on the same overly-done shitty album!)
Yeah, I forgot to mention Page & Coverdale.
Plant Page
Daltrey Townshend
Bon Scott Angus Young
Mick Jagger Keith Richards
