I'd like to add Puddle Of Mudd
Puddle of crud.
Muddle Of Pudd
Sniff ‘n’ the Tears. I never get tired of their hit song, Driver’s Seat.
Budgie.
You got that right!
Cherry Poppin’ Daddies comes to mind. Doesn’t look good a on a T-Shirt
I was on a lyric site as a kid and my dad asked about that band and then immediately retracted his question. Haha
Slightly better than the punk band „sniffin shit“. Lol
I actually like that one...a double entendre + it fit their Jump Blues thing.
Butthole Surfers - LOL!!! (Have some cool songs, though.)
Hootie & The Blowfish - Corny as hell.
Butthole surfers, the surfers of butt.
I totally agree with you on Butthole Surfers. I had read that that was actually the name of a song their lead singer Gibby Haynes wrote. They did the song at a talent contest or something and the emcee forgot the group's name so he introduced them as the Butthole Surfers, which was the name of the song they did. They ended up winning the contest so they kept the name. From what I read, some of the names they used before that one were even worse. One of the names they used was The Inalienable Right to Eat Fred Astaire's Asshole. (I read that in a book I used to have about Rock band name origins.)
@Bvd45 Bvd47 Cause it is.
Huey Lewis and the News is cheesy too.
@@mck7646 I agree. I think a more appropriate name these days would be Huey Lewis & the Propaganda, since that's mostly what the news is these days.
- 'Negro Eyes' (REM was called Negro Eyes when they first started out 😂)
- 'The Pedophiles' (This was Paul DiAnno's punk band before he joined Maiden)
_Well, you see me crawling through the bushes_
_With it open wide_
_What you seein’, girl?_
Is That True About DiAnno???? WOW Lucha!!!
@@spaghetti.lee-69 You can google it 😉
my dad was briefly into punk and saw a band in Oakland call N_ggers from Planet Hell
Actually as a punk name that's pretty goos
I am not even lying there was a band in Dallas in the late 80s menstrual gravy. Worse name I ever heard in my life.
What in the world...
That's a pretty stupid name, not just because of the unpleasant imagery, but also because that's a pretty hard sell. Imagine asking a record label, "Hey, will you market our band Menstrual Gravy?"
🤮
According to Tony Wilson of Factory Records the worst band name ever was Crispy Ambulance.
Hoobastank 🤮
Blink 182
Limp Bizkit
Miteyoak Hoobastank 😂
WTF were they thinking?
Hoobastank is the worst band ever. They were probably high when they came up with the name.
Mid 2000s metal/math core and grind core band names are 90 percent awful
Ikr, most of those band names would either sound pretentious and douchy or be really comical that you could not possibly take it seriously
In the 70’s, we had a lot of law firm bands, eg Emerson Lake and Palmer, but the recent trend is to do the same but semi-abbreviate the names into a frankenstein band name, eg HoBoLeMa. Terrible!!!
Law firm bands lol ...so true
The problem with this band name is when one member leaves or dies you have to change name.
Anderson, Bruford, Wakeman, Howe
Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young
Others. 😊
You could go on for days with those early to mid 2000s pretencious sounding metalcore band names. Dont even get me started.
She left me in August

- Hoobastank
- Toad The Wet Sprocket
- We Butter The Bread With Butter (and most other sentences-as-band-names too)
- Metalium
- Panic! At The Disco ( not necessarily a bad band name in itself, but mid-phrase exclamation points definitely are dumb)
- Godspeed You! Black Emperor (see above)
- Any and all of those pointlessy-long-name-just-for-the-sake-of-it band names, a la Eximperituserqethhzebibšiptugakkathšulweliarzaxułum (aka just "Eximperitus", if one's not into the whole brevity thing)
When I was a teenager back in the early 80's, my friends and I formed a garage band in the Bronx...we thought we had the coolest name ever!!! "Volume Control".....but, after a few months we decided it was kind of lame so we changed it to something else....."Slutt" ...But, after a while we decided that name wasn't too good either so we settled on "Mad Axes".... but, then we found out that was actually a slang term for rappers...so, we changed it once again to The Bronx Maniax....which was the worst one yet! Eventually we said fuck it and broke up the band and that was the end of that....but, I sometimes wonder if we would have been successful if he had taken the time to think of a very good name.
I've got a few "favorites" to share:
1. Colonel Les Claypool's Fearless Flying Frog Brigade
2. Indignant Senility
3. Kiss The Anus Of A Black Cat
4. Let me Introduce You To The End
5. The Electric Prunes
6. And in reserve, Thunderthighs or Starfucker (not STRFKR, the original from the '70's)
Rage Against The Machine... Awful name, Awful band
As Zakk would say "Limp Bizkit sucks Dick!
A condition that requires Viagra.
@@scottmcgregor562 Actually, the definition is much more disgusting that that. Surprised it wasn't in the clip, maybe too obvious.
@@kitoyobeni1 not sure that I want to know.
@@scottmcgregor562 I'll leave that to urban dictionary, lol
I was listening to Spooky Tooth in the car when my then-teenaged nephew asked who it was. When I said Spooky Tooth, he laughed and said it was the dumbest name he had ever heard. I had to agree, but the album (Spooky Two) is incredible!
Love them, the name they had before (Art) wasn‘t any better but their album Supernatural fairy tales is one of my favoritism. Black Sabbath played this material live in the late 60s
Squirrel Nut Zippers would be one of mine
Thank you guys for your opinion RANT- Awful Band Names!🎤🎸🎵🥁
Could never understand how the band members could possibly agree on Echo and the Bunnymen
Ya i never could figure that one out
I love that name.
Original name was Bunnymen. Echo was the drum machine they used to use before De Freitas comes in. So they made it Echo and the bunnymen....Think its cool...
I thought the name is pretty HARE RASIN Does anybody remember laughter?
@bucky468 I know that song. Echosmith is frankly a terrible band name.
Great job you guys. I was laughing all the way through, and had to catch myself a couple of times!
I'd say- 1. Cinderella , 2. Strawberry Alarmclock, 3. Seven Mary Three , 4. Kajagoogoo, 5. Audioslave
Late sixties terrible band name, terrible album....Ultimate Spinach.
Orang-utan was almost a spit your drink out moment for me. Priceless. Especially the way it was thrust into the camera lens for the reveal while being announced deadpan at the same time. Pure comedian timing gold. Hilarious. You couldn't have planned that better if you'd tried 😂
One name I could come up with is squirrel nut zippers
Named after an old time candy
Great candy. Hard to find, but very tasty.
Smoked pot with the piano player about decade ago. He seemed like a good joe.
Reminds me, there was a 70's rock band called Dumpy's Rusty Nuts.
EXE was short for Executioner. They shortened it to EXE because there were so many bands with the name Executioner.
Came here to say this. I second it.
Death Angel, Morbid Angel, Fifth Angel, Seventh Angel, Iron Angel, Dark Angel, Fallen Angel
In Belgium we've got a band called 'Kiss the anus of a black cat'
And what about Angel ??
@@carlosabad6596, it sounds better without another word in front. You saw the band logo upside down already?
What? Morbid Angel's a great band name, IMO! It's a got wonderful feeling of dissonance going on with the juxtaposition of its components. Those other 'angels' I have to agree on, quite run-of-the-mill metal band names.
Angel Witch, Angel Dust, Angel Morgue, Angelscourge, AngelShredder....
@@carlosabad6596 Angel is a GREAT Band Name! Awesome BAND!
Pete you are like a production line with all these video drops the few days holy mackerel !!!
Budgie is an awesome band but never got that name. Chris is hilarious should be a stand up comedian.
They always make me think of an old Monty Python skit: "I've just been reading a great big book about how to put your budgie down, and apparently you can either hit them with the book, or, you can shoot them just there, just above the beak."
I remember seeing Dee Snider on Letterman one night and band names came up. Twisted Sister? And Dee told about a band member who was all excited, saying he has the perfect name for their then unnamed band.
" I got it! We'll call the band "This", he proudly announced. Dee replied "This"??
"Yeah! Think about fans. Think about writers. "This" is awesome. "This" is great!
To which Dee replied "How 'bout "This" sucks!?"

E-X-E were originally called Executioner, but were forced to change their name in 1986 after signing to Shatter Records, so as to avoid being confused with the Boston band Executioner. (It's also worth nothing that the renamed band's logo, stylised as 'E-X-Ǝ' in jagged metallic lettering, resembles an axe-blade when rendered on album covers.)
I just posted the same thing
Just shared the metal archive link about e-x- e before seeing your comment haha
On Facebook, search for "EXENY" and they have a page up. "Executioner" has a Wikipedia page but that must be the Boston band. That explains a lot regarding my searching...
@Michael Easter What is this ‘Facebook’ of which you speak?
Eagles of death metal
These guys are becoming "MUST SEE TV" for Monday nights. Absolutely awesome!
Speaking of those sentence names...When People Were Shorter and Lived by the Water
Then those 80s alternative names...Scruffy the Cat, Pop Will Eat Itself, Yo La Tengo, Dumptruck, Orchestral Maneuvers in the Dark, Prefab Sprout, Clan of Xymox
And of course...Kajagoogoo
I Actually like Kajagoogoo but what the fuck were they thinking when they choose that name!!!!
Half Man Half Biscuit. Mind you they did record an album called Trouble In Bridgewater which made me laugh.
Carter, The Unstoppable Sex Machine
Ned's Atomic Dustbin (from a Goon Show but really???)
Clan of Xymox is an awesome band name. And an awesome band, too.
Limp Bizkit
Korn
Hootie and the Blowfish
Toad the Wet Sproket
Puddle of Mudd
King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard
Matchbox 20
Panic at the Disco
Panic at the disco???? That’s a genius name, and it is a direct reference to The Smiths, the song “Panic”. You damn boomer!

Todd Bridges and the Whatchu Talkin About Willis Experience.
For some reason Butthole Surfers, Faster Pussycat, Winger, Green Jello(Jelly), and Corpse Vomit comes to mind.
Troy V You could put in a lot of 80s hair metal bands, like Bang Tango, Danger Danger, Shotgun Messiah, Dangerous Toys, and numerous others. 😂😂
Butthole surfers is the worst for me. The next two are Dead Kennedy’s and King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard. The flying burrito brothers is also quite bad
@@alexandergilles8583 that name kept me from listening to them.
@@ryangioia2358 3 of those 4 are pretty good IMO

Some that come to mind: The flying burrito brothers, Faster pussycat, Dead Kennedy’s, king gizzard and the lizard wizard, Suicide silence, Cannibal Corpse, Rhino Bucket, Blue Oyster cult, Hootie and the blowfish
Yeah and the Dead Milkmen
Cannibal Corpse is a perfect name for that band though. It fits the lyrics.
I love Faster Pussycat and always thought it was a cool name😁
Flying Burrito Brothers is objectively the greatest band name of all time. This is the hill upon which I shall die.
The Dead Kennedys is a great name!

The Beatles
Lemon Jelly
Weezer
Limp Bizkit
Def Leppard
Counting Crows
Toad the Wet Sprocket
Scouting for Girls
Corrosion of Conformity
Carter the Unstoppable Sex Machine
Chris Alo’s point about the band name looking good on T-shirts is so true, when one considers that many acts will make more from merchandise sales than their music. A bad name and / or graphic design is really shooting yourself in the foot.
The Beatles is a great band name
Hopefully next topic will be albums with "bad titles".

"The Babys" - Not only the most un-rock-n-roll name ever, it's not even gramatically correct!
Greta Van fleet, anthrax, five finger death punch. All awful in my opinion
Anthrax? Really?
Anthrax is a cool name.
Greta Van Fleet is awful for a myriad of reasons. LOL!
Anthrax? What's wrong with that name? It's not like Anal Intruder or S.D.I. (Satan's Defloration Incorporated). Anthrax sounds pretty heavy and memorable.
@@dr.phibesinred6066 Anthrax is great and fits the music. One of the most bizarre band names I've ever heard was Anal Cunt. I couldn't believe that one when I heard it.

Mott The Hoople isn't that bad, I've heard a lot worse. They got the name from a book title from the mid 60's. When they had a line up change they shortened the band name to Mott.

How about Van Der Graaf Generator? English band believe it or not.
Presidents Of The United States of America
Totally

...and it's been the name of a band on two different occasions.
WORST NAME EVER: "The Very idea Of Fucking Hitler" 80's hardcore band.
And here's some more terrible band names: Culture Club, Style Council, Kajagoogoo, A-ha, Wham, Frankie Goes to Hollywood, One Direction, Goo Goo Dolls, Five Finger Death Punch and Puddle of Mudd.
Pete, you need to a show on the origins of band's names and how they came about.
Love Alabama Thunderpussy! Saw their former guitarist Asechiah Bogdan a few years ago when he was still playing with Windhand.
I'm in the UK, in my 30s, and I first started collecting hard rock records as a kid in the late 90s and I remember encountering Lynyrd Skynyrd's name for the first time. I just assumed they were named after maybe a native America place or something.
Off the top of my head I can think of, Van Der Graaf Generator, Dumpy's Rusty Nuts, Mungo Jerry, Atomic Rooster, The Hootenanny Singers, Katzenjammer.
Even some artists made up weird band names for album titles.
Sergeant Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band - The Beatles
The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars - David Bowie
Zinc Alloy And The Hidden Riders Of Tomorrow - T. Rex
Captain Fantastic And The Brown Dirt Cowboy - Elton John.
I honestly believe Fanny could have been so much bigger if they hadn't decided on that awful name. Khruangbin is also pretty terrible. There are too many pop band names from the 80s to even mention (Bananarama, Duran Duran, Wang Chung...) but hey its a rock channel.
Fanny’s Beat Club live stuff is fantastic. Blind Alley and Special Care are truly great rock songs. Their studio stuff is weak for whatever reason.
Here are a couple more gems. (Different genres) :
1) “Sweaty Nipples” - Seattle band during the grunge era
2) “The Crazy World of Arthur Brown”- British ‘60’s psych band
3) “Badfinger”- Great British band from the early ‘70s
4) “The Fatback Band” - good ‘70s funk and soul band
5) “*NSYNC”- no words needed
How about Van Der Graaf Generator? Sounds Dutch but they were actually an English band.
I like that name. 😊
"Badfinger" still was better than their former name, "The Iveys".
@@TheBillyKmusic Yes, but only a little. 😊

The Master Musicians of Bukkake has to get a mention here.
Kiss, Meat Loaf, Smashing Pumpkins, Cranberries, Black Eyed Peas, Cake, Tangerine Dream, Everything But The Girl, Jane Loves Jezebel, Toto, New York Dolls, Morte Macabre, etc...
The Melvins is one named after a high school janitor I believe. I thought there were some pretty generic names for 80s bands. White lion, zebra, stryper, Cinderella, great white, black and blue. To name a few. Maybe not the worst names but just no imagination.
Melvins were actually named after the supervisor of a Thriftway grocery store where Buzz Osborne had been employed as a clerk (apparently, the guy was a bit of a jerk, and the band named themselves after him just to sort of make fun of him and his ’nerdy’ name). As for the high-school janitor named Melvin, you may be thinking of the Toxic Avenger, I’m not sure.
every era had bad band names...... not just the 80's bands......
Remember seeing the album cover of a band called Split Beaver back in the day.
There was a punk band called Clit 45.
Sean Cooper Honestly, that’s hilarious. As is Split Beaver. It doesn’t matter how good they are, I’d be laughing too hard to be able to watch them live.
I've heard of the band Alabama Thunderpussy. There was a rather obscure Midwestern band calling themselves Thunderpussy who released an album called Documents of Captivity in 1973, which was a heavy rock band that touched on prog and psych.
We did a little tour in Germany in the '90s and one of our local support bands was Willie and the Wankers!
@@miketheyunggod2534 They were a punk band. Funny thing was, they took themselves very seriously and, being German, pronounced it Villie and the Vankers. Couldn’t get a smile out of any of them.
Helmet, Soundgarden, Billy Talent, The Band
Soundgarden's not a bad name.
I love Soundgarden. Their name actually grabbed my attention. Fan for life!
I think Helmet is actually a cool band name.
Soundgarden is good
Clinging to the trees of a forest fire is pretty dang cool. Sounds like a post-metal band.
In Germany, there was a casting band called BroSis. Not a good name.
There is a geat band called GPS. Looking for that band on the internet can really be a bother.
And then, there are some weird ones:
- We butter the bread with butter
- Vampires on Tomato Juice (awesome, sounds a little bit like System of a Down)
- Japanische Kampfhörspiele (Japanese battle audio dramas)
great topic - Would you consider doing a similar discussion on what names you would give to a new rock band? - I keep thinking that all the good names are taken - I mean there are no animals left (after Wasp, Lion, Leppard, Budgie, Scorpions, Tiger, Snake). By the way I'm not in a band that is looking for a new, cool, name or anything like that. Take care
Plenty of names I think are actually terrible: Pearl Jam, Toad The Wet Sprocket, and most recently Imagine Dragons.
But the one I always wondered about, and I liked the band, their logo and how the name sounded, was Def Leppard. I mean, it was Deaf Leopard after changing from Atomic Mass, which was awful too. Then they changed it too look like Led Zeppelin. But who would name a band after a deaf leopard ? that doesn't make any sense to me. Then there is always this band called Cattle Decapitation, lol.
Edit: Thanks for recommending Lucifer, I hadn't heard of this band before. Pretty cool retro sound. But yeah, no idea why they named the band Lucifer.
