      The sound had a bit of echo but is fine to me also. Thanks, Elvira! A lot of what you said about the Russian women also applies to the Western women - or applied. A number of Russian ways start to "make sense" when taking into account that only some of them are due to Russia being different and many are down to Russia simply being socially behind the West.
      Often that's a curse of course, but sometimes being a decade or three behind the trailblazer can be a blessing, gives one a chance to see the effects and plot a safer and more moderate a course. Certainly worked for China with respect to the transition to capitalism - after having seen the Soviets' mistakes.

    Much of what you say about the historic situation of women is equally true in western countries. It is simply that the industrial revolution happened earlier here. And moving to the cities was easier here. In russia the vast amount of space enabled many men and women to stay out in the farmland. Of course staaying as small farmers did not enable either men or women to get good education. And that, I think, is the true difference. An educated population is able to ask, Why?

    • @SA2004YG
      @SA2004YG 4 дня назад +1

      I dont think its necessarily a matter of education so much as means. When you dont have to stress about basic needs then people start to wonder about deeper life issues

    • @Jules_Diplopia

      @@SA2004YG But the only way to test that would be to create a society where all basic needs were met by an outside agency. That is unlikely to ever happen, and I would guess that if all basic needs were met, then people would begin to wonder what else there was.

    A rather obvious and uncomfortable question, but I have to ask it. How do Russian women rationalize their menfolk’s extensive war crimes in Ukraine? How do they react to the genocide more generally? These questions could provide the theme of a future episode dealing with the cultural / societal backdrop.

    • @elvirabary
      @elvirabary  День назад +1

      Thank you for your question, it's a very interesting one. The short answer is that I believe that these women are either: A - Are not aware of anything, or B- Even if they are, chose not to believe it or dismiss it.
      Information control in Russia is very tight, prison sentences are handed out to anyone who might even mention Bucha for example, even in conversation or on social media. So it's not hard to imagine that a lot of those women from the small towns or country side have simply never heard of ANY war crimes committed by Russian forces in Ukraine. And even if some information does sip through the easiest thing for them would be not to dismiss it.
      That's partly the reason why almost everyone conscripted into the Ukraine war come from small towns or the country side, where it's easier to control the narrative.
      Once this war is over and if the facts of the war crimes are presented, there might be a major shock to the system and to many Russians.

    • @Epaminondas371
      @Epaminondas371 День назад

      Many thanks for your answer to this question. I must acknowledge that I am not as qualified as you to provide insights but my instincts tell me that additional factors are at play. Given the colossal scale of the atrocities and of the Russian killed and wounded (supported by accounts from hospitals and the burgeoning cemeteries), how is it possible to plead ignorance? I suspect there is deep rooted sickness in this society generally. My prejudice as an older man, is that women are more susceptible to common sense and humanity. Hence my question.

    • @elvirabary
      @elvirabary  16 часов назад

      You bring up a good point, along with self-delusion, there is definitely a factor of simply accepting the way things are and not question the authority. That idea of "not rocking the boat" is probably one of the factors contributing to what you call "sickness" or rot. I do believe it's present in Russian society, I just don't know to what degree.

      @@elvirabary I’m very grateful that you have engaged with me on this. I believe that this is a question of paramount importance: Is the general population of Russia a victim of the regime or is the regime just a manifestation of broad Russian values and culture ie they are all in it together? Secondarily, do both genders share the same values? I somehow expect the women to have more common sense and humanity (spoken as a male!). When in Russia I noticed most women were a healthy weight until they hit around 45-50. Russians eat more Whole Foods and a lot less junk food and don’t eat out at restaurants often as most can’t afford it. Thank you for sharing your story. I think the issue you're mentioning is the "lack of exercise" culture among Russian women. Until the age of 40, it's usually enough to eat fairly healthy and walk a lot (which many Russians do), but after 40 the body undergoes various changes including hormonal and metabolic and unless the woman starts to implement a stricter diet and an exercise routine, maintaining the weight is very difficult. This is true for all women, not just Russian.

    The Russian Empire was in part a pioneer and forerunner for women’s rights. Namely in an autonomous region of the Empire - the Grand Duchy of Finland - women were granted the right to vote (suffrage) already in 1906. This was third in the world and a first for Europe! Likewise in 1906 women were granted the right of representation. In the following year (1907) Finnish women were voted into office as representatives in the Grand Duchy’s Senate (i.e. Parliament). This was a first in the world!

      @@elvirabaryYes, in many cases there is need to secure better gender rights, balance or harmony. Domestic violence can be physical as well as psychological. Men being bigger in size and having greater physical strength, this gives them a certain “edge”. In patriarchal societies physical domestic violence has been more often directed against the “fairer sex”. But domestic violence need not be one-way. Years ago, I was half-amused to hear about an association for battered husbands in neighboring Sweden. I don’t know if it exists any longer, but the Internet does carry intriguing files on subjects like “Domestic violence against men” or even Henry Makow’s web site criticizing feminism and woke culture. Be that as it may, Russian women can be tough. During WW II they replaced men in the work force, and even today many continue to do heavy labor in agriculture etc.

    Have you heard of the various theories about why Russian women in the last century had a reputation for being strong-willed , independent , somewhat dominating ? That during industrialisation and hard times after 1910 , men ( limitchiki ) were likely to either leave for industrial cities or the front ... This resulted in large numbers of women being head of the household on their own . This was further accentuated by years of wars , repression , martial law ... For example my mother-in-law told of how in the 1940s , when her ( lone ) mother was ordered to be away on komandirovki ... She had to do EVERYTHING herself from the age of 4 - e.g getting to school and feeding herself for days in a row !

    • @elvirabary
      @elvirabary  4 дня назад +2

      Thank you for watching and your comment. You're absolutely correct. Russian women often do play a head of household role even to this day. I think it has a lot to do with the fact that due to various factors (like wars, alcoholism, death rate, etc) there has almost always been a lack of men. So the remaining men were often treated more as precious resources rather than grown up adults by the women in the their lives (first mothers, then spouses).
      For a long time, the standard for a "good" man was as low as "He is not a drunkard". That was good enough at least to start a family and raise kids with.

    Hollywood has alot to answer for, particularly in recent years, good luck with finding a woman today that would follow their husband into exile, maybe they still do exist, I'd like to think so, another great video, thank you

      I dont think they should anyways, nor any good father would want them to sacrifice themselves

      But now instead of exile, men can often simply immigrate to another country. There are certainly examples of women following their husbands into an immigration.

      Yes Elvira, it is hard tó generalise about people. Different periods in time have different circumstances and different cultural norms. What I was trying to express in my original comment was my perception that what used to be seen and noble behaviours are less visible today. Maybe it's just that I'm older and nostalgic and maybe people were always the same, I don't know. Much of the older writing had at it's core a moral tale and the discussion of right and wrong. As a man I knew here used to say "always do the big thing".

    Women are the same everywhere, in all eras.
    Extract resources, create s legion of beta orbiters and work husbands, procreate, decide you aren't happiy, move on. Travel, stuff, and a solipsistic "main character" in the special theatrical show of Her Life.
    Did I miss any points?

      Can the same be said for men? That they are the same everywhere in all eras?

      Stereotype. Woman often have a better educatiion / university degree. In thd eyes of many man they no longer fit in this traditinal wife image. Woman earn often more money, so they refuse to "date down".
      Men are unable to do their share of household work, playing video games and try to escape / refuse living in a partnership. Men vote significant more conservative, woman vote more democratic. So Trump's idea of a family wife is compliant to Puhins image of a tradwife. ;)
      Both sides have problems to overcome their traditional roles in a partnership in this fast changing world.
